Church Collects Food For Octorara Food Cupboard BY FRANCINE FULTON

Because the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) has been challenged to meet the hunger needs of local families during the coronavirus pandemic, Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Parkesburg holds monthly food drives to help keep the pantry’s shelves filled with nonperishable food items.

William McWatters, a physics teacher at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen, recently received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

William McWatters (back, third from left) is the faculty adviser for Octorara’s Physics Fight Club team, which previously competed in Warsaw, Poland. Teams members include (back, from left) Ryan Bagget, Ryan LaRue, Ethan Whitney, (front) Kyle Quinn and Colin Murphy.

he Octorara Area Education Association recently announced that William McWatters, a physics teacher at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The award, created in 1983, is the highest honor conferred by the U.S. government specifically to teachers of math and science. After being nominated for the award by Octorara teacher Jen Watson, McWatters had to take part in an extensive application process that began in the summer of 2018. In addition to written documents, he had to submit a video of himself teaching a class, along with a self-evaluation. “It ended up being 27 pages of written work,” he explained. “I was not done until spring of 2019. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in physics from the University of Delaware and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in educational leadership from Wilmington University. “When I was doing oil changes and flat (tire) repairs for $9 an hour, no one thought I would go on to earn multiple degrees in physics and eventually be recognized by the President of the United States,” McWatters commented. McWatters offers advanced science courses at Octorara, as well as dual-enrollment courses in conjunction with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He is also the faculty adviser for Octorara’s Physics Fight Club team, which competes annually in the International Young Physicists tournament. Octorara’s team is the fourtime defending national champion under McWatters’ guidance, and the team has competed in Singapore, Beijing and Warsaw.

Father John Van de Paer, who previously served at Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) Parish in Parkesburg, was honored on his 100th birthday with a parade in Arlington., Va., where he now lives. Born in Belgium on Nov. 29, 1920, Van de Paer, known affectionately as Father John, was ordained a priest with the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1947. His missionary work led him to the United States a year later,

fall of 2019, I was named one of Pennsylvania’s three finalists. I was informed in early August of 2020 that I was the winner.” McWatters received a congratulatory letter from President Donald Trump and a financial award. Because of COVID-19, a virtual award ceremony was held in August. “They have not given any information yet, but there was a promise to bring us to Washington the next time they have an in-person event; that may still happen,” he noted. McWatters did not follow the traditional career path. After failing out of college at age 18, McWatters worked at a tire center for about a decade before starting college again at age 27. “In the interim of those 10 years when I was a college dropout, I coached a lot of sports teams - Little League Baseball and basketball and soccer,” he noted. “I really enjoyed it, so when I decided to go back to college, I wanted to be a teacher.”

Drive-through food drives are held on the second Saturday of each month at the church, located across from Minch Park, from 10 a.m. to noon. During the food drive on Jan. 9, church volunteers Paula and Jack Shelton and LeeAnn Johnson were on hand to accept donations. Local residents stopped by to drop off canned goods, including cases of peanut butter, baked beans and spaghetti sauce, as well as cereal and pasta. In addition, a representative from Parkesburg Library, where donations for the cupboard are accepted on a daily basis, delivered food donations to the church.

We also included the stories that were shared by individuals who wanted to send a special message to him on his 100th birthday.” For example, an excerpt from the book includes a comment by a parishioner, which states, “Father John is an inspired priest who has touched the lives and hearts of so many! We have been so blessed to have him for 100 years and wish him 100 more!” Hood noted that those who do know Van de Paer will also find the book enjoyable and inspiring. “This is an individual who dedicated his whole life to love - humbly and beautifully,” she stated. “For anyone looking for inspiration, this is something they might enjoy.” For additional information about obtaining the book, readers may contact Barbara Tuttle at btuttle@verizon.net or Hood at kadaholo@verizon.net.

Local residents lined First Avenue in Parkesburg on Dec. 30 to pay their final respects to Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde during a funeral procession that included fire trucks and other rescue vehicles from Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD). Wilde passed away on Dec. 17 at the age of 89. The solemn funeral procession began at Wilde Funeral Home, where Wilde was a fourth-generation funeral director; passed KVFD, where Wilde once served as fire chief;

and ended at Wilde’s final resting place at the Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church cemetery, where the funeral ceremony took place. Among those who viewed the procession of vehicles were local citizens, members of the Parkesburg Lions Club and borough and fire department officials. KVFD rang its sirens as the procession passed by. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, those who stood along the street wore masks and practiced social distancing, and Wilde’s service was open only to immediate family.

donations,” reported Johnson, noting the importance of supporting the OAFC. “The food cupboard can’t keep up with the great need.” Many food cupboards refer to this time of year as the “heat or eat” season - when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill. “They should not have to make that choice,” said Johnson. The OAFC is located at 714 Main St., Parkesburg. At present, the OAFC is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. and on Wednes-

The first food drive was held on Sept. 5, 2020, and was organized by Johnson with her Girl Scout troop with the help of parent volunteers. At that event, the OAFC provided a trailer that was parked at the church. People were invited to pull up to the curb and a volunteer took the food donations from their car trunks. Now, the food drive retains this contactless format. “Since we have been holding the food drives, we have definitely seen an increase of food

Octorara Teacher from pg 1 McWatters said that the award is “a seal of approval” that his teaching style is working. “Basically, I put a series of problems in front of the students to work on,” he said. “When we are not in a pandemic and in my classroom, (students) do hands-on laboratory investigations 60% to 70% of the time.” He also describes winning the award as “both humbling and exhilarating as I look to make my students’ experience more robust.” “I won this award and it’s really cool, but there are some really great teachers at Octorara. I’m pretty sure I’m not the best teacher in my hallway, let alone the building,” he stated. “There are some fantastic teachers who have not been recognized in this way.”

A funeral procession that included vehicles from Keystone Valley Fire Department in Parkesburg escorted longtime resident Thaddeus “Bud Wilde to his final resting place on Dec. 30. Residents lined First Avenue in the borough to pay their respects to Wilde, who was a fourth-generation funeral director, a lifetime member of the fire company and a member of the Parkesburg Lions Club.

Family members, including Wilde’s daughter, Cathy Wilde Christ, were moved by the number of people who turned out to say goodbye. “(Family members) send our love out to the community for their overwhelming support and love they showed us during Dad’s passing, said Christ, “His funeral procession will forever be etched in our hearts, and I know Dad would be grinning from ear to ear if he would have seen it. Many residents refer to Wilde as a community icon. In 2020, Parkesburg Mayor John Hagan declared March 2, Wilde’s birthday, as Thaddeus “Bud Wilde Day in the Borough of Parkesburg. Wilde graduated in 1953 from Eckels College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia and served two years of apprenticeship at the Wilde Funeral Home before becoming director. Wilde was a member of Parkesburg Methodist Church and a former member of Parkesburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, elder and trustee. He was a member of the Brandywine Goddard Masonic Lodge F&AM for 67 years. He served
