Octorara

Even though it was the first time they have entered the Ag Mechanics competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, members of the Octorara FFA captured an award for the log splitter that they designed and created.

“This is the first year (the Farm Show organizers) have done (a log splitting contest). Before that it was restoring antique tractors, so (the students) decided to participate,”

explained FFA adviser Charles Graydus.

The students were required to not only design and build a log splitter, but also to make a presentation to the Farm Show judges and create a video about their log splitter. The videos were posted on YouTube, and members of the public were invited to vote for their favorite. Local residents were encouraged to vote for the video, which was also posted at www.facebook.com/FFAOctorara.

The fifth annual Burns Night, held in memory of Scotland’s poet laureate Robert Burns, will be presented by the Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Historic Beale Manor, 200 S. Church St., Parkesburg.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m., when guests will be greeted by bagpiper Thompson McConnell, followed by a social time with music by fiddler Tom Knapp, founder of Lancaster’s Fire in the Glen, an Irish music trio.

A traditional haggis ceremony, led by Donald Henderson Jr., will f ollow, ending with a toast of Scotch. A supper buffet will be served, which will include haggis, Angus beef, Scottish soup, salad

and neeps and tatties, which are turnips and potatoes. For dessert there will be trifle, shortbread and cakes.

After supper, guests will be invited to honor the life of Robert “Rabbie” Burns with speeches, readings and toasts. Charlie Zahm will present “A Tribute to Robert Burns.”

Guests will be invited to gather around the piano to sing Burns songs to conclude the evening.

Burns is best known for writing the words to “Auld Lang Syne,” which has become associated with New Year’s Eve.

Visitors are encouraged to get into the spirit of the evening by wearing their tartans, but it is not required.

Beale Manor was chosen as the venue because of its historic charm. It is a Victorian-style mansion that

was built in 1813 by John Parke, f ounder of Parkesburg. It was reconstructed in 1896 by ironmaster Horace Beale. “It is the perfect place for this event,” said Donna McCool, foundation treasurer. “It has parqueted floors and fireplaces, high ceilings and nice woodwork.”

The annual Burns Night is a fundraising event to help maintain and preserve historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. Located at 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, the church was originally constructed in 1752 and is considered the oldest Covenanter church in America. The historic building is open for special events, including the foundation’s annual Scottish Festival in September. The Covenanter Church is also open the third Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m.

Animal Rescue

Julia Altman founded the rescue on the family farm in West Grove in 2010. “My wife has always been interested in animal welfare,” explained Altman’s husband, Jack Merritt, volunteer director of donor relations. “Shortly after buying the property, she started a little homebased rescue with a handful of dogs. It started very small. She had two or three dogs, and after a year or so, it kept growing organically. We built a small climate-controlled kennel with eight runs on our property in 2012.”

“In 2015, we hired some help and got volunteers and hit a milestone of 1,500 lives saved in those first five years,” he added.

Merritt explained that dogs that come to the rescue are mostly from the southern states, including Kentucky and West Virginia, and throughout the Appalachian region. “Almost all animals come from high-kill shelters where the dogs are overbred and (the rescues) are underfunded and they don’t have spay and neuter (programs). They get so overfull that they put dogs to sleep to make space. Kind-hearted people in those areas comb the

For the video, Octorara students won the Reader’s Choice Award, also known as the People’s Choice Award.

The video explains the unique design of Octorara’s log splitter, which features a lift that allows heavy logs to roll easily onto the table saw, as well as a saw blade that is double-sided, allowing the user to cut more logs and split them more quickly. Plus, the entire device had to fit on a trailer that the students created.

“First, they did research. They found one that they liked that split (logs) both ways versus the traditional one that only splits one way,” Graydus said. “Then they came up with their own plans.”

Graydus is a teacher in the Agriculture Mechanics Program, which is part of the Octorara Area Career & Technical Education program at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. He said that the students designed and built the log-splitter during class. Production began last fall.

“ We tried things and if it didn’t work, we modified it,” he said, noting that Billy Miller was the project foreman. “They got along very well.” In addition to Miller, the team was made up of Mason Woodall, Merle Reyburn, Cyrus Stoltzfus and Dylan Colagreco.

The log splitter was so well received at the Farm Show that some approached Graydus with an offer to buy it. “A couple of them thought we were an industry that built them. And I told them, ‘It is a student project,’” said Graydus.

As of now, Graydus and the students are not sure what will become of their log splitter. They have discussed chancing it off through a drawing to raise money for the club.

“I have it now at home,” said Graydus, who resides on a farm in Elverson. “I have some pretty big logs to split. I will put it through the test (before we decide).”

For their efforts, the students won a cash prize and a plaque.

To view the video that the Octorara students created about the log splitter, visit www.youtube.com and search f or “OCTORARA log splitter” or search for the link at the previously mentioned Facebook page.

shelters for dogs that are getting ready to be put to sleep.”

Once dogs are located, they become the responsibility of Greenmore Farm Animal Rescue. “We get them vetted and arrange for transport to Pennsylvania, which is one of our biggest expenses,” noted Merritt. “In the very beginning, volunteer transporters moved dogs by car. As we got bigger and the industry has changed, there are people who do paid transport. We have people who bring 10 or 15 dogs at a time in a rented van.”

Those interested in adopting a dog must complete an application.

If they currently own a dog, prospective adoptees must bring the animal to a meet-and-greet. “Our (goal) is to get them what we call ‘furever’ homes,” said Merritt. “We get them in, get them

healthy, socialized and post them on social media like petfinder.com.”

Adoptable pets can also be viewed at www.facebook.com/greenmorefarm.

In addition to searching for adoptive families, the rescue is in need of foster families and volunteers. “Every dog gets walked around the perimeter of the farm. That has to be done three times a day for every dog,” said Merritt. “We have a puppy room (because the puppies) have to be nurtured and cuddled and played with. The volunteers have to clean the crates, but they sit on the floor with a lap full of puppies for an hour.”

All the efforts have allowed the rescue to save the lives of 4,000 dogs as of October 2022. “Although we in the rescue community see a lot of heartbreaking stuff every day, each time we are able to place one of these beautiful dogs in their furever home, it’s all worthwhile,” said Altman, noting that those who

adopt a loving pet benefit as well. “We are actually saving people, one dog at a time.”
