Remodeled Factory Market Opens BY ANN MEAD ASH

On Jan. 4, The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, held a ribbon cutting to open its new Factory Market. The event, which was broadcast via Facebook Live, was

facilitated by Factory Ministries executive director Adam Nagle and market director Kerri Burns. The remodeled market was based on Burns’ vision for a place that would offer dignity and affirmation to those who utilize the market. See Market pg 4

Scouts Jonah (left) and Noah Zink display the cookbook that is currently being offered for sale by Boy Scout Troop 20 of Atglen.

Cookbook Sale To Benefit Boy Scout Troop verything from vegetable pizza and curried squash soup to no-bake energy bites and Scottish shortbread is featured in a cookbook currently being offered by Boy Scout Troop 20 of Atglen. “Troop 20 Family Favorites,” a collection of recipes by troop members and their families, is being sold as a fundraiser to help finance the cost of troop activities in lieu of the troop’s annual fruit basket sale. The cookbook is divided into sections, including Appetizers and Beverages; Soups and Salads; Vegetables and Side Dishes; Main Dishes; Breads and Rolls; Desserts; Cookies and Candy; and This and That.

Atglen Library Earns Silver Award

Once the recipes were compiled, Jackson found a publishing company, Morris Press, which created the book. “They have a ‘type and save’ program, where we typed all the recipes into their program,” she said. “This program (also) allowed us to choose our art that was in the book as well as write a little history on our troop.” In addition to the history and the assortment of recipes, the cookbook contains many helpful hints for home cooks. This reference information includes a section on how to use and identify herbs and spices, baking hints, details on how to buy the best fresh fruits and vegetables, measurement charts, cooking

The Atglen Public Library (APL) recently earned its second Silver Level Award with the PA Forward Star Library program administered by the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA). The second award is for civic and social literacy. According to Robbyn Kehoe, APL library director, the library completed the requirements for the award by holding a local history family scavenger hunt last November.

“We began compiling the recipes for the cookbook in the beginning of October; all recipes were due by the end of October,” explained Scout mom Heather Jackson. “All Scouts were asked to submit as many recipes as they would like. They could ask anyone in their family for recipes.” Many of the recipes in the book are distinct because they are unique to each family, such as “Grandma’s Gobs,” which are sandwich cookies filled with icing, and “Porcupine Meatballs,” which are meatballs containing rice. Some recipes use slow cookers, such as the one for “Absolutely Ultimate Potato Soup.” There is also a recipe for slow cooker hot chocolate.

Giant Giving Program To Benefit Local Schools

Octorara Physics Teacher Earns Presidential Award

To help address food insecurity among students, The Giant Company recently introduced a new customer giving initiative to assist local public schools in the communities it serves. This initiative, aimed at addressing the issue of childhood hunger, enables school districts to use the funds to best serve their community and can be used to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs and building on-campus food pantries. Now through Sunday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores will be invited to round up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar to donate to their local public schools’

The Octorara Area Education Association recently announced that William McWatters, a physics teacher at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The award, created in 1983, is the highest honor conferred by the U.S. government specifically to teachers of math and science. After being nominated for the award by Octorara teacher Jen Watson, McWatters had to take part in an extensive application process that began in the summer of 2018. In addition to written documents, he had to submit a

food programs. The Giant Company will match the first $1 million donated by customers through the round-up program. Additionally, customers will be able to convert their Choice points into a donation. For every 100 points converted into Grocery Dollars via the Giant or Martin’s app, $1 will be donated to the initiative, and customers will still be able to use the grocery dollars for their own savings on their grocery bill. The Giant Company will match every Choice point converted up to an additional $500,000 donated through this new initiative. Funds will be distributed to schools in March. video of himself teaching a class, along with a self-evaluation. “It ended up being 27 pages of written work,” he explained. “I was not done until spring of 2019. In the fall of 2019, I was named one of Pennsylvania’s three finalists. I was informed in early August of 2020 that I was the winner.” McWatters received a congratulatory letter from President Donald Trump and a financial award. Because of COVID-19, a virtual award ceremony was held in August. “They have not given any information yet, but there was a promise to bring us to Washington the next time they have an in-person event; that may still happen,” he noted. McWatters did not follow the traditional career path. After failing out of college at age 18, McWatters worked at a tire center for about a decade before starting college again at age 27. “In the interim of those 10 years when I was a college dropout, I coached a lot of sports teams - Little League Baseball and basketball and soc-

cer,” he noted. “I really enjoyed it, so when I decided to go back to college, I wanted to be a teacher.” He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in physics from the University of Delaware and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in educational leadership from Wilmington University. “When I was doing oil changes and flat (tire) repairs for $9 an hour, no one thought I would go on to earn multiple degrees in physics and eventually be recognized by the President of the United States,” McWatters commented. McWatters offers advanced science courses at Octorara, as well as dual-enrollment courses in conjunction with the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. He is also the faculty adviser for Octorara’s Physics Fight Club team, which competes annually in the International Young Physicists tournament. Octorara’s team

is the four-time defending national champion under McWatters’ guidance, and the team has competed in Singapore, Beijing and Warsaw. McWatters said that the award is “a seal of approval” that his teaching style is working. “Basically, I put a series of problems in front of the students to work on,” he said. “When we are not in a pandemic and in my classroom, (students) do hands-on laboratory investigations 60% to 70% of the time.” He also describes winning the award as “both humbling and exhilarating as I look to make my students’ experience more robust.” “I won this award and it’s really cool, but there are some really great teachers at Octorara. I’m pretty sure I’m not the best teacher in my hallway, let alone the building,” he stated. “There are some fantastic teachers who have not been recognized in this way.”

New Choices Program Will Return YWCA Lancaster announced the return of New Choices, a program first launched 35 years ago as a collaborative effort between YWCA Lancaster, the Junior League of Lancaster, and Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. New Choices has aided individuals in transition and has helped thousands of Lancaster individuals to plan and achieve their career, educational, and personal goals. New Choices receives part of its funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and is overseen by Pennsylvania Women Work, which transforms women’s lives

through empowerment, employment, and economic independence. Deb St. Onge, the current New Choices director, will continue her role as the director of YWCA Lancaster New Choices. YWCA Lancaster New Choices currently offers virtual courses twice a month, including a session from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and a session from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., completely free of charge for individuals in Lancaster, York, and Chester counties. Library from pg 1 activities,” said Kehoe. Kehoe noted that libraries are recognized for meeting benchmarks within the bronze, silver and gold star levels of the program. While one star is awarded for both the bronze and gold levels, a total of five stars are awarded in the silver category - one silver star for each of the five literacies of PA Forward. “ We have a few more requirements to meet for the remaining three silver awards, then we will go for the gold,” Kehoe shared. APL is located at 413 Valley Ave., Atglen. Currently, the library has suspended inbuilding services. However, the library offers drive-up service at its porch window during operating hours - Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Patrons can ask staff members to make copies or send

faxes, as well as print from their mobile devices. “From our porch, they can log onto our wireless printer and print directly from their phone or tablet and we give them (the documents),” Kehoe explained, noting a nominal fee is charged per page. People may also pick up books that have been reserved in advance or choose from a selection of books pulled from the collection by library staff members. “You can place a hold by logging on to our website, or you can do the same thing through the Chester County Library System mobile app,” Kehoe pointed out. “If you can’t do that, you can call us and if you know the titles, we can do it quickly. Or you can call and (ask for suggestions).” Kehoe said all books and materials touched by patrons are sanitized. Staff members wear masks, and patrons coming to the window are

also required to wear masks. “People are still getting personalized service with a lowcontact situation,” she added. For more information, readers may call 610-5936848, visit www.facebook .com/AtglenPublicLibrary or www.atglenpubliclibrary.org or email rkehoe@ccls.org.

VisionCorps has a program to give free eye exams and glasses to qualified adults and children in southcentral Pennsylvania. This assistance is provided to individuals in the community who may not be able to afford eye exams and glasses. VisionCorps, with help from the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation, connects lowincome families in Lancaster, Adams, Chester, Lebanon, and York counties to access free vision examinations and basic frames and lenses. To see if they qualify for the service, readers may call VisionCorps at 717-205-4141. VisionCorps offers education and prevention of blindness services, rehabilitation, and employment to individuals. Programs and services, which are offered to clients ranging in age from birth to seniors, include occupational therapy, tips for living independently, and employment opportunities. In addition, VisionCorps offers virtual programs about its services; these programs are available to organizations and employers. The programs, which can be individualized

timetables and even a section on napkin folding. All of the recipes are included in the easy-to-use index. “It was a lot of work typing and putting together the book, but it was fun reading all the different and sometimes same recipes with the different families’ twists on them,” Jackson shared. Proceeds for each book will benefit troop members. One-third will go to the whole troop to pay for activities and help with Scouts who have financial needs. One-third will go to each Scout’s High Adventure account, which pay for trips to Camp Philmont, Sea Base or Algonquin. “The last third is for each Scout to use for our monthly camping trips

“The scavenger hunt presented participants with several clues to locate buildings that were standing when Atglen was incorporated in 1876. During the hunt, 81 participants got a good walk, learned a little local history and looked at their town in a new way,” Kehoe stated. “The event was so successful that we are planning more scavenger hunts for this year. It’s a great way to engage our community in a safe way while our buildings have limited admittance.” PA Forward, which launched statewide in 2012, works through five key literacies basic, information, civic and social, health and financial. help reduce food waste. The barn door was a gift from the Intercourse Lions Club, and two of the walls were built by the Pequea Valley High School ninth grade CORE career readiness program. He also said that Weis Markets contributes hundreds of pounds of food per week through a Central Pennsylvania Food Bank connection. Nagle also credited the Paradise-area community with donating many items for the market through Food Fridays, an effort launched in April 2020 that invites area residents to drop food outside at The Factory from 9 a.m. to noon each Friday. Burns thanked Nagle for helping make her vision a reality by putting time and energy into the project. Nagle responded, “I am big on space feeling good because space communicates so much. When you had this vision, I said, ‘Let’s step behind this and make it happen.’” Nagle closed the ribboncutting ceremony with a prayer that all who shop at the market would feel dignity and care. He thanked God for volunteer time and energy, and he prayed that Burns’ heart and hope for Factory clients would be evident to those who enter the space. Readers who wish to learn more about The Factory Ministries may visit www.thefactoryministries.com. Individuals who have questions about the food pantry program may call 717-6879594.

Nagle opened the event by introducing Burns and noting the role she played in the redesign of the market space. “This was her vision,” he said. “This has come from her head and heart.” “I hope that this space will be a bright spot in someone’s day,” Burns said. “I hope (Factory clients) leave encouraged by a kind word or conversation they had here.” Shira Zimmerman, director of advocates for The Factory, joined the event electronically from her home. “The market plays a key role in everything we do on the social services side (at The Factory Ministries),” said Zimmerman, who explained that clients receive Factory Bucks for meeting with advocates and attending classes. “(Clients) can now walk into the market, and it’s more beautiful than ever … and this tells them that they matter and that their journey matters.” After Burns cut the ribbon, she and Nagle took a tour of the market, pointing out new shelving, a reach-in cooler, and a barn door between the market and the storage area. Nagle noted that the cooler was purchased with a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection that is given to organizations to

Church Collects Food For Octorara Food Cupboard

LeeAnn Johnson (left) and Paula Shelton accepted food donations for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard during the monthly drive-through food drive held at Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Parkesburg. BY FRANCINE FULTON

Because the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) has been challenged to meet the hunger needs of local families during the coronavirus pandemic, Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Parkesburg holds monthly food drives to help keep the pantry’s shelves filled with nonperishable food items. Drive-through food drives are held on the second Saturday of each month at the church, located across from Minch Park, from 10 a.m. to noon. During the food drive on Jan. 9, church volunteers Paula and Jack Shelton and LeeAnn Johnson were on hand to accept donations. Local residents stopped by to drop off canned goods, including cases of peanut butter, baked beans and spaghetti sauce, as well as cereal and pasta. In addition, a representative from Parkesburg Library, where donations for the cupboard are accepted on a daily basis, delivered food donations to the church. The first food drive was held on Sept. 5, 2020, and was organized by Johnson with her Girl Scout troop with the help of parent volunteers. At that event, the OAFC provided a trailer that was parked at the church. People were invited to pull up to the curb and a volunteer took the food donations from their car trunks. Now, the food drive retains this contactless format. “Since we have been holding the food drives, we have definitely seen an increase of food donations,” reported Johnson, not-

ing the importance of supporting the OAFC. “The food cupboard can’t keep up with the great need.” Many food cupboards refer to this time of year as the “heat or eat” season when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill. “They should not have to make that choice,” said Johnson. The OAFC is located at 714 Main St., Parkesburg. At present, the OAFC is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. Hours of operation are subject to change. Food donations are accepted when the pantry is open. Items most needed by the OAFC include canned fruit, canned spaghetti sauce (not glass containers), stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, canned red beets (whole or sliced), pork and beans, boxed scalloped potatoes, rice dishes in a bag, mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup. Donations of fresh produce will also be accepted. For more information, readers may call OAFC executive director Judy Dougherty at 610-857-4000 or visit www.octfood.com or www.face book.com/OctoraraAreaFood Cupboard. The next scheduled drivethrough food drive will be on Saturday, Feb. 13. Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church is located at 406 W. Second Ave., Parkesburg. For more information about the church, readers may call 610-857-9176 or visit www.ascensionparkesburg.org.

Community members should pay attention to their mental health this winter, according to Dr. Vinay Saranga, a psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry. Saranga noted that the pandemic and seasonal affective disorder may increase the risk of depression for some people. Saranga recommends several ways to maintain good mental health. People are encouraged to increase social interaction safely. Human beings need social interaction, and this can be done safely by texting, calling and video chatting with friends and family. People can get together in a safe fashion, such as by sitting on opposite sides of a driveway and wearing their masks. Getting more light can also help ward off depression.

Winter means shorter days, and the lack of sunshine can make some people depressed. When the weather permits, people should make sure to spend some time outside. They should keep window coverings open and allow natural light to get inside. In more severe cases, people might talk to their doctor about options such as light box therapy. Additionally, Saranga recommends that people carve out at least 30 minutes each day to do something they enjoy. They can go for a run, sit on a park bench and watch people, listen to music, meditate, take a bath or talk to friends. Exercise is also encouraged. Even 20 minutes of increased physical activity each day can make a significant difference in how a person feels. Proper diet and sleep are

also important to how one feels. Taking care of one’s immune system through a nutrient-dense diet is imperative during the cold seasons. People should prioritize foods high in antioxidants and vitamins, including vitamin B-12, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon and chicken are excellent sources of lean proteins that provide energy and can boost mood. People should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as oatmeal and certain fortified cereals, along with walnuts and sunflower seeds, which contain folic acid and can lead to an increase of serotonin in the brain. People should also make sure they get enough sleep each night. If a person has trouble managing his or her depression, he or she should talk to a doctor.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) urges motorists to drive safely in work zones. Even though construction season is winding down in many places, PennDOT road crews are still working on the roadways. Drivers should not speed, never drive distracted, and always buckle up, especially in work zones. Pennsylvania law states that anyone stopped by law enforcement for violating the posted speed limit by more than 5 mph will face doubled fines. The fine is determined based on the amount the driver is traveling over the speed limit. Gov. Tom Wolf signed a law in 2016 that says any driver who causes serious bodily injury within a work zone could face a fine and a sixmonth license suspension, and a driver causing a death within a work zone could face a larger fine and a oneyear license suspension. Drivers who do not turn on their headlights in posted work zones face a fine. Additionally, in an effort to change unsafe driving behaviors in work zones, Pennsylvania’s Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement began earlier this year. The program uses vehiclemounted systems to detect and record motorists exceeding posted work zone speed limits by 11 miles per hour or more using electronic speed timing devices. AWZSE systems can be deployed in active work zones, where workers are present, on the turnpike as well as any active work zone on a federal aid highway this includes higher class roadways like interstates, major arterials, and numbered routes. Registered owners will receive a warning letter for a first offense and a violation notice and a fine for subsequent offenses. These violations are civil penalties only; no points will be assessed to drivers’ licenses. For more information on work zone safety, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/safety.
