On a recent Saturday morning, Keryn Shortlidge, a member of Ambassador Troop 4746, which meets at the Lions Club building in Christiana, was selling cookies outside Walmart with her mother, Kerri, the troop leader. The sales were brisk despite the wintry weather. “It was 10 degrees when we got here,” said Kerri, noting that traditionally girls work at the booths in two-hour shifts. Keryn said that the most popular cookies sold each year are Thin Mints, but that people have been curious about the new selection. “It’s brownie-inspired, but it’s crunchy. It tastes like a brownie, and it has caramel Girl Scout Keryn Shortlidge offers and sea salt,” she noted. BY FRANCINE FULTON

About 20 volunteers, including the Rev. Mary Lewis, pastor, visited the Christian camp as part of a day of service for the first time on Jan. 22. They were joined by several Tel Hai staff members, including Brian Williamson, executive director; Bruce Gregory, program director; and Molly Devlin, food service manager. Prior to the visit, the congregation members met Williamson, who spoke to them about the camp. “The director came to our church to speak to us about some service opportunities here,” said volunteer Mary Engel. “He gave us some ideas of what needed to be done and anyone who wanted to help could (volunteer) whatever

In addition, adult volunteers from the church frequently work off-site “We make a meal once a month at The Parkesburg POINT (youth center),” Engel said. “Some people make desserts, and some people go out to prepare the meal or serve the meal.” “It’s nice to help wherever we can,” she added. For those in need of food, the church has set up a mini food pantry. Weather permitting, food items are placed on a table located outside the front doors of the church, 103 West St., Parkesburg. The table was set up in 2020 in response to the pandemic. For more information about Parkesburg Baptist Church, call 610-857-9135 or search for “Parkesburg Baptist Church” on Facebook.

Fulfilling its motto of “We Serve,” the Christiana Lions Club recently completed a collection drive for residents of Kentucky who were impacted by a devastating tornado in December. Working with a Lions Club in Hopkinsville, Ky., the Christiana club was able to put together a list of needed items, such as flashlights, batteries and work gloves, which the community was invited to donate. Additionally, nonperishable food was collected by members of the Christiana and Parkesburg Lions Club members at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap. All of the donations were sorted and placed in boxes by volunteers at the Christiana Lions Club building. The boxes were then loaded onto trailers and brought to Lowe’s of Morgantown, where Lowe’s employees put the donations on pallets and wrapped them in plastic. Forklift operators from Lowe’s, including store manager Dawn Madara, loaded the boxes onto a 53foot Lions Club tractor-trailer, which was “wrapped” with the Pennsylvania Lions Club logo and the statement
“Pennsylvania Lions - Serving Our Communities Since 1923.” Lowe’s contributed to the effort by donating supplies and offering a discount on items purchased at the store by the Lions Club. In addition to Lions from Christiana, other volunteers on hand were members of the Parkesburg Lions Club and the Ephrata Lions Club. “There were skids of generators, kerosene heaters, rakes and shovels and heavy-duty tarps - all kinds of items other than just boxes of food,” explained Christiana Lions Club member Ed Baylor, assistant Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator. He noted that the volunteers and employees all worked together on a morning when the temperature was only 17 degrees. After Morgantown, the truck made a stop at the Lions Club state office in Harrisburg. A second tractor-trailer was needed to collect additional supplies in Cranberry Township near Pittsburgh before both vehicles headed to Kentucky. In addition to collecting food, supplies and monetary donations, Lions Club members from throughout Pennsylvania are currently working in Kentucky to help with relief efforts. “It’s amazing how the Pennsylvania Lions stepped up to the plate and got supplies and donations,” Baylor said. “Jim Groff, (Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief coordinator), who was in Joplin after the tornado, said this (collection effort) is the biggest he has ever seen.” For more information about the Christiana Lions Club and to view

Founded in 1910, it is one of the oldest continually active bird clubs in the United States. “People assume it’s a Chester County club, (but) anyone can join from any place,” she noted. In addition to taking part in various bird counts, club members participate in field trips. Every Thursday, members can be found at Exton Park, 800 E. Swedesford Road, taking part in a bird walk from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. The walks are sponsored by the Friends of Exton Park. Each walk at the park is led by a group leader who guides attendees as they search for birds. “You never know what you will see. A lot of experienced birders like to go out because they might see something that is rare,” Majors said, noting that a

Now, you can count birds anywhere.” According to the website, the GBBC was launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society as a way for the community to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. The data submitted by the public helps scientists to better understand global bird populations. “There is a database of bird sightings that is maintained by Cornell University, so people all over the world can go out birding anywhere and record their sightings in the database,” said Majors. “(The data) gives ornithologists research material. They can see where bird (populations) are declining, or they can see trends where they are

running out. The snow removal vehicles, such as plows and salt spreaders, are maintained and (if needed) they are repaired as quickly as possible. Community Courier: What is the most valuable advice you could give local residents when it comes to staying safe on the roads during a snowstorm? R e a l i : It’s in everybody’s best interest to use common sense, keep speed to a minimum and be aware that there is, at any area, the potential for icy conditions that could cause someone to not stop or skid through an intersection. I think the residents should be very mindful of keeping their sidewalks clear and to be considerate of the workers and the snowplow drivers. These gentlemen work through the night and early mornings and during the day. (Drivers should) be very mindful of where the snowplows are. Community Courier: If a resident has a question about the snow removal policies or needs more information, whom do they contact? Reali: Anyone can call the borough office. We do our best to communicate via social media and the borough website, and there is always Chester County Emergency Services postings. The Parkesburg Borough municipal building is located at 315 W. First Ave., Building 1, Parkesburg. For more information, call 610-857-2616 or visit www.parkesburg.org or www.face book.com/ParkesburgBorough.

Reali: The areas of most importance are Main Street, Strasburg Avenue, East and West First Avenue, all of the designated snow emergency routes, (followed by) all other streets and avenues and alleyways. Community Courier: Do you have any rules about keeping sidewalks clear? Reali: In accordance with Snow Ordinance 490, all sidewalks shall be cleared of snow and ice within 36 hours after the cessation of the event. If more precipitation happens within that 36 hours, that pushes the clock back. Community Courier: What should residents know about trash pickup after a storm? R e a l i : For the safety of our streets department personnel, (residents should) clear a path to and around their trash receptacles (and) keep lids on the trash cans to prevent water, snow and ice (from filling up the cans) as this adds pounds and makes it difficult and dangerous for the workers. We ask people not to put out trash or recycling if the snowstorm affects those pickup days. Community Courier: When do you begin planning for winter weather, and how do you plan? R e a l i : We secure our salt through COSTARS, the approved vendor from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and we order that salt in the spring of each year. We keep a stockpile of salt and we order and replenish the stockpile as we need it in anticipation of using the salt we have and not
