Christiana Lions Club Presents Donations BY FRANCINE FULTON

Members of the Christiana Lions Club recently presented goggles and hand sanitizer to Christiana Borough and the Christiana Ambulance. The items were obtained from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by Lion Jim Groff to be used during the coronavirus pandemic.

Octorara Girl Scouts will offer cookies this year through online sales and drive-through pickup. Offering pickup at The Little Shop Next Door in Parkesburg on Jan. 30 were (from left) Rylie Rice, Amelia McElwee and Morrigan McElwee.

hile the pandemic has caused the postponement or cancellation of many events and activities, the traditional sale of Girl Scout Cookies will go on. In lieu of selling Girl Scout Cookies at booths at local stores, however, cookies will be sold online and those who purchase them will be able to pick up their cookies in a drive-through format. This will allow the Scouts to conduct sales safely with minimal contact. Jule Ann Wakeman, who is coleader of Girl Scout Troop 415 along with Jenn Rice, explained that cookies can be ordered from individual Girl Scouts, ordered from local troops that are selling them through virtual booth ordering sites, or shipped directly to the buyer for a fee. “We aren’t doing traditional booths right now, but several local troops are offering curbside pick-up of pre-paid orders,” Jule Ann explained. “All you need to do is visit a troop’s virtual booth ordering site, choose your cookies, pay online through our secure third-party pay-

shaped like French toast and it tastes like cinnamon toast crunch cereal,” said Jule Ann. The Scouts reported that Thin Mints remain the most popular cookie, followed by Peanut Butter Patties and Caramel deLites. They also noted that this will be the last year that the Girl Scouts S’mores cookie will be sold. In addition to those mentioned, other Girl Scout Cookie varieties include Lemonades, Peanut Butter Sandwich and Shortbread. Those who pick up their cookies at the drive-through locations will also have an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program provides cookies to nonprofit organizations in the local community. In the past, Octorara troops have donated cookies to local fire and ambulance stations, the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, an urgent care center, and The Parkesburg POINT youth center. To learn more about cookie sales, readers may visit www.gsep.org/en/ cookies/find-cookies.html.

When Logan McGrane of Gap was not yet 4 years old, he started riding motorcycles. By the time he was 4, he was racing motorcycles. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 26 through 29, 2020, the 15-yearold Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) freshman smoked the competition during three days of racing in Travelers Rest, S.C. “He won three national championships,” said Logan’s grandfather Thomas

When the money was gathered, Dorville presented a check to Atglen Mayor Darren Hodorovich on Jan. 13. “Once we gave the check to the mayor, I wrote a letter explaining that, as a church, we want to be a blessing and we want (people) to know (their) debt has been paid for. We gave copies to the borough to send to the recipients,” he said, noting that residents also received a phone call from a borough employee, who is also a church member. “People she talked to were overjoyed.” The church had planned to raise funds through donations it received during an outdoor live Nativity on Christmas Eve, but the event was canceled due to inclement weather. Despite the cancellation, the congregation was able to raise the needed funds. “Because we had to adjust our game plan, people sent offerings to the church office,” Dorville said. The most recent outreach is representative of the church’s history of service. Also in January, the church organized a clothing drive and collected diapers, coats, blankets and gift cards for a local family with two young children whose home on Main Street in Aglen was destroyed by a fire. Dorville also wrote a letter to congregation members thanking them for their generosity. “We ... enabled members of our community to have a fresh start heading into 2021. They no longer have to carry the weight on their shoulders,” the letter stated. “You have given them real hope. I cannot tell you how touched I am by your generosity. You chose to spread joy and light. Thank you for making such a difference in our community.” Currently, the church offers livestreamed services at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays through its YouTube

Working with a Lions Club in that area, the local club and the community collected boxes of laundry detergent, bleach, mops, work gloves, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items, which were then brought to the area via tractor-trailer. Logan said that racing has not interfered with schoolwork or school activities. Racing motorcycles runs in Logan’s blood. “It’s what we do,” noted his grandfather, adding that Logan uses the motorcycles that were ridden by his late uncle Kyle McGrane, a champion racer in the Ice Racing Series, and a multi-Amateur National Champion, among other titles. Kyle was killed while racing in Santa Rosa, Calif., in 2016 at the age of 17. Logan’s father was also a national champion, and his uncle Warren Diem was a world champion. Asked what he enjoys most about racing, Logan cited “going fast” and “winning,” but noted that traveling is fun as well. He said that he has visited Florida, Georgia, both North and South Carolina, and Tennessee and has traveled up the East Coast as well. Heading west, he has been

That Sunday, Dec. 20, everyone came and had a hot meal,” Groff shared. “I talk to them almost every week and if they need something, we get things together and make it happen.”

While in Florida, he finished third in the Winter Throwdown races held Jan. 8 and 9. Logan looks forward to turning professional as soon as he celebrates his 16th birthday in September, but he noted that will depend on the racing schedule. “If there are only one or two races after my birthday, I might wait until 2022,” he said. “This is what I want to do,” he added, grinning.

That is the rewarding part.” Groff said that some people may not realize that after a hurricane, relief efforts can go on for years. “I was in Joplin (Mo). in 2011 when that tornado touched down. The Parkesburg POINT youth center, 700 Main St., Parkesburg, reopened for in-person programming on Jan. 4. The POINT is currently open on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m. On Mondays and Wednesdays the facility is open to students in grades seven to 12. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for students in grades three through six. While it is not necessary for students to preregister before they visit, their parents will be asked to complete a registration form for them at the front desk. Youths may also register though The POINT app, which is free for downloading. Youths who visit The POINT can enjoy dinner, homework help, Bible study and recreational activities. “The POINT provides a safe haven for students to have social interaction and activity after a really tough

year of not having either of those things,” said Debbie Shupp, development director. “We provide activity, the arts, interactive games, Bible studies and a chance to rebuild relationships with peers and communicate with caring adults.” The POINT works in partnership with local churches to provide a healthy meal for students at 6 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. While The POINT was shut down last year, a food distribution program was implemented to provide students and their families with food. “We provide a fresh, homemade meal each evening. Dinner is prepared on-site, and the volunteers are responsible for planning the menu, cooking and serving,” Shupp explained. “As (executive director) Dwayne (Walton) puts it, the meal is the same meal you would serve your family, so it does include a protein, vegetable, starch and some sort of dessert.” See POINT pg 6

Since COVID-19, The POINT has adapted its programs and activities to help ensure the safety of staff members, volunteers and students. For example, The POINT added 10 part-time interns so that volunteers could work with students in smaller groups with social distancing in place. In addition, The POINT has been able to increase counseling services for students and continue to provide crisis support to families in need with food, utility and rental assistance and more. “We are very grateful to those who have supported us through the pandemic, including over 25 churches who serve a nutritious meal each evening, and the other volunteers to help work with the kids,” Shupp added. “We do adhere to all of the COVID-19 and CDC protocols in order to keep our students and volunteers safe and our doors open.” Now in its 18th year, The Parkesburg POINT is a faith-based community center that serves youths ages 8 to 18 in the Octorara and Coatesville Area school districts. The motto of the center is “Every Child Deserves Hope.” For more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/parkes burg.point or www.parkesburg point.com or call 610-857-3393.

Giant Launches Choice Pass As part of its long-term strategic omnichannel plans, the Giant Company recently announced that it is now offering Choice Pass to its online Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct customers. Choice Pass represents the company’s most recent step in enhancing its holistic online experience while keeping its focus on helping families save time so they can find more time to gather around the table. Choice Pass provides unlimited free delivery and pickup for an annual dollar amount, which represents a new savings for subscribers. Giant calculated that Choice Pass can pay for itself with two deliveries per month or one pickup per week. With a nod toward its Giant Choice Rewards program, Choice Pass will replace the current model of PodPass. To underscore this customer-facing change, Choice Pass also comes with a new logo that takes its origins from Giant Choice Rewards. The Giant Company introduced the Giant Direct brand in February 2019 when it debuted its first ecommerce hub in the city of Lancaster. In July 2019, the company opened its 100th pickup location, in Carlisle. Along the way, the company also launched a new website to deliver a unified online experience bringing everything together for customers - all offerings, products and Giant Choice Rewards - with a bolder interface and enhanced personalization. Customers across 90% of the company’s footprint have access to online grocery ordering and delivery services. Readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.
