DAR Honors Essay Contest Winners During Virtual Ceremony BY FRANCINE FULTON

lthough the ceremony was held virtually via Zoom, the awards presentation for the American History Essay Contest presented annually by the Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)

“Imagine you are living in Boston and, after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.” featured all the customary activities. The event included meeting the winning students, the recognition of parents and teachers and the awarding of honorary citations from state representatives, followed by the reading of the essays. “The customary presentation and recognition are certainly not the same. But so, so much is positive,” stated Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair. “It’s so rewarding to be made

originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. Also, the essay had to be the student’s own work. This year’s judges were DAR members Irene Moyer and Launa Sprouls. The non-DAR judge was Keith Burkert, a graduate of Rutgers University with a degree in history. Chloe wrote from the point of view of a girl whose brother described the massacre as “the most horrible thing he had every watched.” She also said the event was a way “to rally the 13 colonies to fight for their freedom.” Lauren wrote about a girl named Elizabeth who lost her best friend, Christopher, during the massacre, writing that March 5 was “a terrifying day.” In her essay, Claire wrote from the vantage point of a young girl living at the time, stating, “Girls are not to talk about war or anything masculine.” Julianna set the stage of a family supper where family members discussed the sentiment at the time - “No taxation without representation.” State Sens. Carolyn Comitta and John Kean were on hand for the ceremony via Zoom as well. They read the citation that each student was presented at her school by her sponsoring teacher. For their achievements, each of the winners received a certificate, a medal and a monetary gift.

“This is the time (people) really need support; there is a lot of anxiety,” said Donna Kueny, program director for Compeer Chester County, a nonprofit organization that pairs people living with mental health conditions with volunteer friends from the community. “There has never been a more appropriate time for staying in touch with people, letting them know someone cares about them and providing hope.”

Claire Bushnell, the seventh-grader winner, and Juliana Kirby, the eighth-grade winner, are both students at Peirce Middle School, West Chester. Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were in attendance via Zoom. She also read a biographical piece about each student. Clinton explained the premise of the essay contest: “March 5, 2020, marked the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution. Imagine you are living in Boston and, after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.” Judging was based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of material, interest,

Plans are underway for this year’s community garden program at the Parkesburg Library. The gardens at the library include a pollinator garden meant to attract birds, bees and butterflies, as well as raised garden beds located behind the library that are used to grow vegetables. “We are so proud of our community garden program,” said library director Tom Knecht, noting that for the past five years the gardens were maintained by Penn State Master Gardener Dave Jones, assisted by his wife, Linda. “He tirelessly created and cared for our beautiful

pollinator garden at the library’s entrance, floral beds along the side of the library, as well as the organic community vegetable garden.” Now that Dave and Linda have retired, local youth Armen Caravantes has been named the new volunteer garden coordinator. “Being involved with the Parkesburg Library community garden ignited my passion for growing our own food and ultimately led me to want to farm organically now and in the future,” Armen stated. “The gardening program is an amazing resource.” Currently, the library offers limited raised bed spaces to community members on a first-come, firstserved basis. “(The garden area) is fenced off, so the people who are doing the gardening can get a key to open the gate in the back,” Knecht explained, adding that in past years, some vegetables grown in the garden have been taken into the library for free distribution to library patrons.

Members of the Christiana Lions Club recently presented goggles and hand sanitizer to Christiana Borough and the Christiana Ambulance. The items were obtained from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by Lion Jim Groff to be used during the coronavirus pandemic. “I have a connection with FEMA. What they are trying to do is get (the items) out to the general public and picking organizations that (can distribute them),” explained Groff, who is also the Pennsylvania Lions disaster relief program coordinator and district 14-D emergency response coordinator. “They call me and tell me what they have, and they ship it to me.” Groff said he was also expecting a shipment of masks for distribution. “The goggles are one-time use only and then you throw them away,” he said, noting the boxes contain 84 pairs of goggles. “When they have someone in the ambulance or at an accident scene, they wear goggles with the masks, and they have a (protective) white outfit they put on. They use as much protection as they can.” At Christiana Borough, items were presented to borough manager Carol Pringle and administrative assistant MaryAnne Schneider. “The (borough) police and Carole and the ambulance crew said it was great because they are lacking supplies and we were able to help them out,” Groff stated. Groff also coordinated shipments of the goggles and sanitizer to Lions Clubs through Pennsylvania, as well as New York, Delaware and New Jersey. Groff and the Lions Club have a history of helping those in need. In

October of 2020, the Christiana club delivered items to hurricane victims in Louisiana. Working with a Lions Club in that area, the local club and the community collected boxes of laundry detergent, bleach, mops, work gloves, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene items, which were then brought to the area via tractor-trailer. In addition to the supplies, two disaster response units were sent to Louisiana. The pods, once emptied, are used as temporary housing for volunteer workers who are helping with relief projects. “The disaster units are still down there, and they are using them for volunteers,” noted Groff. “When we went to Louisiana, we saw people crying when we gave them (the supplies). That is the rewarding part.” Groff said that some people may not realize that after a hurricane, relief efforts can go on for years. “I was in Joplin (Mo). in 2011 when that tornado touched down. I was there last year, and they might have gotten one-third of (the area) rebuilt,” he stated. “There are houses in (New) Jersey that have not been touched from Sandy in 2012. With disasters like that, they really never fully come back (to normal).” After his visit to Louisiana, Groff has maintained communication with the volunteers there. “They had no money for Christmas dinner for (a) veterans (group) in Louisiana and we sent enough money for them to buy turkeys and ham with all the trimmings. That Sunday, Dec. 20, everyone came and had a hot meal,” Groff shared. “I talk to them almost every week and if they need something, we get things together and make it happen.”

Octorara Girl Scouts will offer cookies this year through online sales and drive-through pickup. Offering pickup at The Little Shop Next Door in Parkesburg on Jan. 30 were (from left) Rylie Rice, Amelia McElwee and Morrigan McElwee.

were Girl Scouts Rylie Rice from Troop 415, Amelia McElwee from Troop 41979 and Morrigan McElwee from Troop 415. The girls noted that a new toastshaped cookie - the Toast-Yay! - is being offered this year. “It is shaped like French toast and it tastes like cinnamon toast crunch cereal,” said Jule Ann. The Scouts reported that Thin Mints remain the most popular cookie, followed by Peanut Butter Patties and Caramel deLites. They also noted that this will be the last year that the Girl Scouts S’mores cookie will be sold. In addition to those mentioned, other Girl Scout Cookie varieties

include Lemonades, Peanut Butter Sandwich and Shortbread. Those who pick up their cookies at the drive-through locations will also have an opportunity to donate to Hometown Heroes, a program adopted in 2019 by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP). The program provides cookies to nonprofit organizations in the local community. In the past, Octorara troops have donated cookies to local fire and ambulance stations, the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, an urgent care center, and The Parkesburg POINT youth center. To learn more about cookie sales, readers may visit www.gsep.org/en /cookies/find-cookies.html.

Compeer from pg 1 suggested they not do a lot of socialization over the holidays. We thought it would be best (for them) to say in touch virtually.” Compeer is in need of volunteers, who must take part in a phone interview, complete an application and have appropriate clearances. “Once they are cleared, we set up a date for training. Another date is set to go over some matches,” Kueny explained. “We are doing training over the phone and sending materials to the volunteers. That is all done virtually now.” Those who are waiting for a match are assigned a “Compeer caller” who calls them once a week to keep in touch. “We did not have a lot of volunteers for the first six months of the pandemic,” Kueny added. “It has just started picking up. We have some young female (volunteers) who just graduated from college who want to give back.” Individuals in the program have

been diagnosed with conditions such as depression, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, and they are referred to the program by a mental health professional. “The people we accept into the program are working in conjunction with their therapist or case manager,” noted Kueny. “They have been stable in the community for a while, and they have the support of the entire team throughout the whole process.” Compeer Chester County is a program of Mental Health Partnerships (MHP). It is funded by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations. Weis Markets Supports American Heart Association This February, the American Heart Association (AHA), a nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, is teaming up with companies around the country to fight cardiovascular disease through Life Is Why, a cause marketing campaign benefiting the AHA. Life Is Why invites consumers to celebrate their reasons to live healthier, longer lives - by giving. Weis Markets also participated in the campaign in 2020. Through Life Is Why, Weis Markets and its customers have a quick and easy way to give to the AHA and support its mission. Weis joins several national companies, including Advance Auto, Kroger, Orangetheory Fitness, Pilot/Flying J, Stage Stores, Stater Bros. Markets and Stein Mart in supporting the campaign. Donations through Life Is Why’s participating retailers - no matter the amount - allow the AHA to fund research aimed to improve the health outcomes of heart and stroke patients, train more than 2.5 million high school students in CPR annually and support the work of local entrepreneurs and organizations working to improve health outcomes in under-resourced communities. Those interested in supporting the AHA can look for the Life Is Why logo on Weis Markets mailers and posters and at the register this month. To learn more about the Life Is Why campaign and other participating companies, readers may visit www.heart.org/lifeiswhy.
