Open House Set at Christiana’s Zercher Hotel

The Christiana Historical Society will present an open house at the Zercher Hotel, 11 Green St., Christiana, on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees will be able to hear the story of the

Spreading Joy Through Kindness Rocks

Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851.

Chester

County resident Lisa Gisone, the founder of Kindness Rocks Chester and Montgomery County (KRCMC), has found a way to share happiness with others by randomly hiding painted rocks throughout the area for people to discover. Those who find a rock may keep it or re-hide it, but the recipients are asked to post a photo of the found rock on the group’s Facebook page.

The effort began in 2017 after Gisone heard about a similar project from her cousin, who lives in California. “I started a Facebook group to encourage Chester County residents to impact their community by doing random acts of kindness,

such as painting and dropping rocks to cheer up the recipient,” Gisone explained. “Amazing things (started) happening. In a little over a month, we hit 1,000 members. Now we are at 6,500 members. People find them and want to join because they feel such joy from it.”

Gisone noted that Montgomery County was added to the group’s name to include rocks found in that area.

Those who paint and hide rocks are asked to include a message, either by creating a label or by writing on the back of the rock with a marker. The message states: “You found it! Keep it or hide it, but first post it to Kindness Rocks Chester and Montgomery County.”

Since the group’s formation, rocks have been placed and found throughout Chester and Montgomery counties at locations such as Kerr Park in Downingtown, the Parkesburg POINT youth center, St. Peter’s Village in Pottstown, the Brandywine Trail and convenience stores and other local businesses.

“Sometimes I will leave (rocks) outside a craft store or supermarket. I leave them at parks when I go for walks and outside libraries. Wherever I go, I carry them in my purse and leave one,” said Gisone, adding, “The first rock I ever found was at a Starbucks in Exton.”

In addition, rocks that originated locally have made their way to other states and even other countries. “People take them on vacation,” said Gisone, noting that painted rocks have been placed in Florida; Rehoboth Beach, Del.; and even Egypt.

Kindness Rock gardens have also been established at local libraries and businesses. “People have rock gardens in their front yards. There was a chiropractor in Parkesburg that had one outside their business, and we had a Scout build a rock garden at Twin Valley High School, as part of her Eagle Scout Project,” Gisone noted.

Some rocks feature an image of a sports team or a favorite pet or loved one that someone has lost. “We have a woman who lost a baby, and she paints butterflies on rocks and leaves them everywhere. It can help people who have been hurt; it is an outlet for them and a way for them to (honor) the person’s memory,” Gisone said. “People have discovered that painting rocks is therapeutic and creates peace and joy in their lives.”

Gisone noted that the Facebook group continues to grow. “Every day there are random people posting,” she said. “(We are) a group of people who really believe and love the group and what it stands for. What we are doing matters.”

To learn more and to view or post photos of found rocks, join the “Kindness Rocks Chester and Montgomery County (KRCMC)” Facebook group.

The historic events occurred that day when slave owner and farmer Edward Gorsuch came from Maryland to retrieve four runaway slaves, whom he deemed to be his property. He arrived at the Christiana home of William Parker, an African American who was giving the slaves refuge. The black community took a stand and refused his demands. With the black residents receiving help from their Quaker neighbors, a confrontation ensued, ending with the death of Gorsuch. About 40 peopleboth black and Quakerwere arrested and held for trial on the charge of treason. A team of lawyers, led by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster, came to their defense and won.

Seeking Volunteer Tutors

Making a positive impact in someone else’s life, learning about other cultures and being inspired are just some of the benefits of becoming a volunteer tutor, according to the Volunteer English Program (VEP) of Chester County, which provides one-to-one English language classes to adult learners.

Prospective tutors are invited to attend the next tutor training session, which will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, March 21; Thursday, March 23; and Monday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. each evening. Since the class is virtual, attendees may dress comfortably and feel free

to enjoy their own snacks at home. “The advantage is that people are training in the comfort of their home, and they don’t have to drive to the location,” said VEP executive director Terri Potrako. “When the session closes at 8 (p.m.), they are already home and weather is not a factor. (Virtual tutor training) has been working nicely.”

According to Potrako, the tutor training workshop is designed to fully prepare volunteers to teach English to adult, non-native speakers. Volunteer tutors also help students with understanding American culture. Prior teaching experience or fluency in a language other than English is not required.

The Zoom sessions will be conducted by VEP’s professional staff. “It is a live training,” Potrako pointed out.

“We have three professionals certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and ESL (English as a Second Language).”

Potrako emphasized that the sessions are interactive so that attendees can communicate with the instructors. “We do a formal presentation within the six hours, and we also use breakout rooms of small, clustered groups, so people are getting to know one other, which is a lovely and dynamic aspect,” she said, noting that an intermission is included in each session. “It’s not two hours of lecturing. It’s better described as facilitated learning or guided presentations. Each topic takes about 10 minutes (to cover), which keeps it fresh and interesting.”

One topic covered in the session is tailoring instruction to the individual student. “Some of the things we teach our tutors is to recognize that there are a variety of ways to learn English. There is no one set curriculum because the goals and students’ own experiences drive where we begin,” said Potrako. “In a one-to-one situation, it’s very adaptable or flexible.”

After training and a background check, each new volunteer is matched with a student. Tutors and students, who may meet in-person or virtually, are asked to make a yearlong commitment to the program. Potrako reported that right now, there is a waiting list of students in need of tutors.

BVSPCA Receives Funding for Upgrades

The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) will receive $50,000 in state funding to improve its West Chester shelter and expand its animal veterinary services. This funding was secured by state Sen. Carolyn Comitta.

Some of the funding will be used to add an in-house surgery suite, which will allow the shelter to offer on-site spay and neuter services, avoiding the need to transport animals to the off-site Animal Health Center and expediting recovery time. The project also calls for building a paved walking path for volunteers and staff members to safely walk dogs around the property during any type of weather and increase the animals’ opportunities for outdoor play, socialization, and

Fifth-Graders Invited to Build Model Homes

Chester County fifthgraders, including those who attend private, charter or parochial schools, as well as homeschoolers, are invited to take part in the 20th annual Build a House Event being presented by Habitat for Humanity of Chester County on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Church Farm School, 1001 E. Lincoln Highway, Exton.

As part of the competition, students may work individually or in teams of two to build their own 3D model dream home. The house must fit on a base no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet. Participants can use any medium they like, such as Legos, cardboard and wood. In previous years, students have created model houses designed to withstand tsunamis, houses based on spaceships and bongo drums,

houses made entirely of pencils and pasta, and energyefficient, environmentally friendly homes.

On March 11, students will be asked to bring their entries for judging by professional architects, engineers, and builders. The panel will judge each home based on originality and creativity, use of materials, appearance and design, and independent effort. All participants will receive recognition for their efforts, and the top three winners will earn prizes. Snacks and activities will be featured at the event.

The goal of the contest, according to event organizers, is to make students aware of the goal of Habitat for Humanity, which is to build affordable housing for people in need. Although the youths are not old enough to work on

construction sites, they learn about the organization and what they can do in the future as volunteers.

The contest is free to enter and relies solely on sponsorship to raise money. Since 2002, more than 6,000 fifth-grade students representing approximately 750 schools throughout the area have participated, and the contest has raised roughly a half million dollars through

Those who visit the museum on Feb. 25 will also be able to view exhibits, artifacts and photographs.

“There is a map of all the Underground Railroad stationmasters from our area that we have documented,” said Darlene Colón, society president. “There is also a storyboard with photos of the son of Edward Gorsuch, photos of the three Quaker gentlemen who were at the Parker home when the event took place and the last two gentlemen who were alive when the home was torn down.”

“We also have some artifacts from an archaeological dig we did in 2016,” she continued. “That was done by Kutztown University on the site where the house used to stand on Lower Valley Road.”

This is the first open house

being held at the site since the pandemic, and it is taking place during Black History Month. “Before COVID, we used to have open houses once a month from April to September leading up to our September (anniversary) events,” said Colón, who is a descendant of one the participants in the Resistance.

The museum is now open by appointment only. The society is planning to launch a new website at the end of February, which will allow people to make reservations for tours online. “We get a lot of calls from people who want to stop in with groups, and we are interested in (volunteers) who want to learn the story and learn how to tell it,” she noted. “Some people who live in the area still don’t know about (the Christiana Resistance), and we have people

visiting the area who have never heard of it.”

She also reported that progress is being made on the Brinton House, which will become the society’s headquarters when repairs are completed at the property.

The two-story house, located at 17 Green St., next to Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church, is owned by the Borough of Christiana, but it has been leased to the historical society.

“We are still working on getting grants,” Colón noted. “We are doing what we can with volunteer labor. We recently had a group come in and take out debris.”

For more information about the open house or the Brinton House project, search for “The Christiana Historical Society” on Facebook or email Colón at Quamony@aol.com.

Conservation Projects Receive Grant Funding Forest Farming Program Planned

Penn State Extension will livestream a program in the Forest Farming Series on Thursday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. via Zoom. Forest farming is the production of non-timber forest products in forests to produce edible and medicinal crops for personal use and income.

Titled “Ramps/Wild Leeks,” the upcoming program will provide information on the identification, biology, ecology, uses, and importance of the edible plant Allium tricoccum, also known as the ramp or wild leek. Viewers will also learn about wild population stewardship and forest farming approaches, as well as research updates and educational opportunities. The webinar is designed for forest landowners, recreational and commercial foragers, foraged plant consumers, natural resource agency personnel, foresters, land managers, and gardeners.

There is no cost to attend, but registration is required to receive the webinar link. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Forest Farming Series: Ramps/Wild Leeks.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.

Three local organizations received over $3 million in grant funding, allocated from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Community Conservation Partnerships Program and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Growing Greener Program. The grants are designed to aid environmental conservation projects in the region and across Pennsylvania.

Of the funding, $2.85 million was awarded to the Stroud Water Research Center, a nonprofit organization based in Avondale, for the installation of 300 acres of riparian buffers statewide and the management of an additional 60 acres of previous plantings. Maintenance for existing buffers includes the removal of invasive species and tree shelter tubes to protect new plantings from wildlife such as deer.

Riparian buffers are planted

zones near waterways that secure banks, provide natural filtration, support ecosystems, prevent runoff, and protect homes, businesses, and roadways from flooding.

Other grant funding awards include $261,870 to the White Clay Watershed Association for a Green Storm Water Infrastructure Rain Garden Demonstration Project in Avondale Borough. In addition, $66,000 was awarded to Avondale Borough for the rehabilitation of Pomeroy Avenue Park. The anticipated work will include renovations to the parking area, construction of a pedestrian walkway and stormwater management measures, and installation of play equipment with required safety surfacing, as well as ADA access, landscaping, a project sign, and other related site improvements.

Not Easily Broken

Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”

“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That threestrand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.

The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.

Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a

Century of Miseducation.”

Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the purpose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God.

“In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy.

“As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.

Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.

Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary. “When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.

“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers. “The mission of the

Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a threestrand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”

Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of Honor and Liberty,” at the banquet.

Tickets to the event may be purchased at www .DayspringChristian.com. Readers who wish to sponsor a table may call 717285-2000, ext. 211.

New Self-Care Campaign Posted

Chester County announced the launch of “Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco,” a campaign that encourages residents to practice effective self-care for better health and wellness through easy

outdoor activity. “Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco” brings together the knowledge and services of the county’s Mental Health/Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Department (MH/IDD),

Health Department, Parks + Preservation, and Planning Commission. It highlights the many public outdoor settings throughout the county.

“Fresh Air, Self-Care Chesco” was born out of recommendations made by the Chester County Youth Mental Health Coalition. The coalition, consisting of state legislators, county officials, school administrators, the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU), local higher education institutions, and behavioral health providers, focused on youth mental health concerns identified by school district

superintendents. One of these concerns led to establishing a family and community partnership workgroup, led by the CCIU, whose focus included ways to lower the risk of depression and promote faster stress recovery.

Chester County has a large number of outdoor resources and activities across the whole county that everyone can tap into, and all are free to use. The many trail, park, preserve, and outdoor activity resources available in Chester County can be found at www.chesco.org /fresh-air.

“Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Erin Wright. The musical follows her to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Eliza Moran, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Alex Weaver, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Richard Weaver, with Minnie Fay, played by Melina Nicole Stratigos. Dolly also solves romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde Kemper, played

by Jada Correll, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Lincoln Everett. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.

Walls Receives Award From CDC

Elizabeth “Betsy” Walls, RN, the retired director of personal health for the Chester County Health Department, has been honored with an award from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She was recognized as Pennsylvania’s PHEP Trailblazer, in celebration of the CDC’s 20th anniversary of the Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Program and Walls’ decades-long service to public health. Walls, a registered nurse, helped to establish the PHEP Program and Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) in Chester County. The PHEP awards are given to individuals who have worked tirelessly to protect their communities from a range of public threats.

Walls is a graduate of the

Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and Widener University Graduate School of Nursing and Business. She went on to serve the Delaware County Memorial Hospital in nursing, nurse administration and nurse education for over 30 years and Penn Medicine Chester County as a nursing supervisor for seven years. Included in her career is a decade of service as a flight nurse for the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, which took her to Cuba, Germany, Japan and other locations.

Her commitment to public service continued through the Chester County Health Department, where she served as director of personal health for 18 years. During her time at the Health Department, Walls was instrumental in creating Chester County’s Medical Countermeasures Program, formerly the Strategic National Stockpile program, which brought together partners throughout the county to dispense medical countermeasures to county residents, employees and visitors if needed. She also helped to establish Chester County’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and was part of the county’s health and emergency response for incidents

Penn State Posts Live Webinar

Penn State Extension will offer a live webinar titled “Finding Solutions to Tree-Sidewalk Conflicts” on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The webinar will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom.

Removing large, healthy trees when sidewalks are lifted is not always the solution that provides the community with the most benefits. Tree and stump removals are expensive, as is sidewalk repair. During the webinar, participants will learn techniques to safely repair and retrofit sidewalks without removing trees, which provide communities with shade, stormwater reduction, energy conservation, and other benefits.

The webinar is designed for public tree, landscape, and environmental board members; municipal managers, foresters, and arborists; and others interested in urban and community forestry. Participants will see the impacts that many sidewalk repair measures have on trees, learn to weigh the benefits and costs that trees bring to hardscapes, and find ways to resolve tree/hardscape conflicts with materials and space management.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. There is no fee for general attendance. There is a cost for a certificate of attendance and for Society of American Foresters CFE credits. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Finding Solutions to Tree-Sidewalk Conflicts.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.
