Octorara to present prom showcase

TheGirls Run the World Club (GRTW) at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School will hold its annual Dress to Express Positive Prom Showcase on Friday, March 10. During the event, club members will model some of the prom dresses and suits that are available for students to “purchase” from Kacie’s Kloset in exchange for donations of nonperishable food items for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

The showcase will be held in the high school auditorium during the school day for juniors and seniors. A second show, open to the entire community at no charge, will be held that evening beginning at 6 p.m. in the junior high MPR room.

Betsy Gillan and Tracey Polito from Kacie’s Cause will be on hand to provide information about the nonprofit organization, which promotes awareness of and education about drug abuse. The charity is named for Kacie Rumford, who died at the age of 23 from an overdose.

Together, Kacie’s Cause and GRTW run Kacie’s Kloset at the high

Wagontown Chapel sets Sportsman’s Event

Brodie Swisher, a world champion game caller, will be the guest speaker at Wagontown Chapel’s Sportsman’s Event, to be held at the church on Saturday, March 18, beginning at 12:30 p.m. In addition to the presentation, the annual event will include light refreshments and a chance to win hunting-related door prizes.

school, offering a wide assortment of donated prom gowns in all sizes and styles. Also offered are shoes, purses and a small selection of tuxedos.

“Kacie’s Kloset is important for (students) because it’s a fantastic way to ‘purchase’ a formal gown or suit for dances, homecoming and prom,” said Tina O’Connor, GRTW adviser, a licensed professional counselor from Experience Positive Therapy in Parkesburg. “These garments were donated through Forever Formals, a dress shop, and the local community.”

Modeled after a boutique, dresses in Kacie’s Kloset are sorted by size and displayed on racks. There are also separate shelves containing shoes and accessories. Dress donations from the community are added to the room on an ongoing basis.

O’Connor explained that GRTW is an after-school mentoring program that meets on Mondays from September through March. Topics discussed during the meetings include building self-esteem and confidence. “(We encourage them) to live their best life,” said O’Connor, noting that the girls also work on accepting themselves as they

are, and they learn about having healthy relationships.

O’Connor believes that walking down the runway is something that should be celebrated, and she encourages the community to attend the showcase. “It is important for the community to attend that night,” she said. “Your attendance and support can help fuel those feelings of acceptance and confidence. Being embraced by the community builds strong leaders and reduces the likelihood of chemical dependency.”

In addition to O’Connor, volunteers who will contribute to the effort include professional photographer Shelly McKenna, who will take photos of each of the girls; Experience Positive Therapy intern Lauren Thatcher; Kelsey Demsky, who will provide dress alterations; and Kate Dill, the Octorara guidance counselor. Hair and makeup will be provided by several community salons.

Octorara Junior-Senior High School is located at 226 Highland Road, Atglen. For more information about Kacie’s Cause, visit www.face book.com/KaciesCauseParkesburg.

Swisher, the winner of the Great American Game Calling Challenge World Championship, holds hunting and game calling seminars throughout the United States that feature hunting adventure videos. Swisher is also an outdoor writer with articles appearing in magazine and internet columns, including www.bowhunting.com. He also has a podcast, “Hunting Roots.” Upon arrival, guests will be able to view displays by a variety of hunting-related vendors. “We will have 15 or 16 vendors this year, and there will be a hunting video playing,” said pastor Tim Crans, a resident of Atglen, noting that one vendor will sell works of art made with painted turkey feathers. While lunch will not be served, there will be an assortment of snacks available to enjoy. “We will have homemade baked goods like cookies and brownies and chips (donated) by Herr’s,” Crans noted. Swisher’s presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by the awarding of door prizes.

VITA offers free tax preparation services

As tax filing season approaches, Chester County residents are reminded that their taxes can be prepared free of charge through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which is offered locally by Life Transforming Ministries (LTM).

“VITA is an amazing program offered by the IRS to partners, such as LTM. (It gives LTM) the opportunity to offer free federal and state tax preparation for low- to moderateincome households in our

communities,” said Donna Laird, LTM VITA administration support. “By low, we mean those making around $70,000 or less, yet our goal is to offer service to anyone who needs help. Tax returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. Every site is run by volunteers who are trained and certified by the IRS.”

LTM’s VITA program began in 2004 in Coatesville. “We did 15 paper returns that year,” Laird said. “Last year, we were able to put $5.4 million back into the community by submitting over 2,600 tax returns.”

Steve Shuster, who helps organize the annual Sportsman Event presented annually by the Outdoorsman Ministry Group at the Christian Life Center (CLC), will also be the featured speaker during this year’s program on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 4 p.m.

In addition to the speaker, the evening will include a traditional wild game covered dish dinner, a silent auction and a display of outdoor products. All attendees will also be entered into a drawing to win door prizes, which will include artwork and hunting packages.

Shuster has been in the hunting and fishing business for more than 30 years with W.L. Gore & Associates, a company that manufactures waterproof outdoor apparel like jackets, gloves and hiking boots. “I have been speaking at churches for four to five years, and the organizing committee asked me to share my story this year,” said Shuster, noting that the first part of his talk will focus on the theme “From Success to Significance.”

“Unfortunately, I was focused on success, which was

all about me and individual accompaniments,” said Shuster. “Not until I realized what I was missing and how selfish I was did I (come to learn) the importance and significance in making an impact in others’ lives and in changing the world. I will challenge the audience with pointed questions like ‘What is your purpose?’ and ‘Why are you here?’”

Shuster’s program will also feature a segment on hunting and fishing. “I will share some useful, practical tips that I learned from the hunting and fishing business and producing a major hunting TV show on ESPN”s Outdoor Channel,” he noted. “I will have clips from my (hunting) experience through the U.S. and New Zealand.”

On March 11, doors will open at 4 p.m., during which time attendees can view silent auction items and displays by vendors, as well as sports memorabilia and taxidermy displays. at 5:45 p.m., dinner and the opening of the silent auction will open. Shuster’s presentation will follow at 6:45 p.m. The program will end with the prize drawings and the announcement of silent auction winners.

Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, dessert

or side dish in a quantity to feed at least eight people. For food safety, hot covered dishes must be prepared on the day of the event and be at a safe internal temperature. Electrical outlets will be available for slow cookers.

VITA

This year, tax preparation sites are located in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, Pottstown, Royersford and West Chester.

A new site this year is the Parkesburg POINT Youth Center, 700 Main St., Parkesburg. “Last year, we did a few days there, but this year we will be there all throughout the season,” Laird said.

Another new site this year is the Maternal and Child Health Consortium Family Center, 385 Starr Road, Suite 204, Landenberg. This site was added to accommodate Spanishspeaking individuals.

Those who take advantage of the tax services have the option to visit one of the sites, or they may share the needed forms and documents via secure email. VITA also partners with the United Way to provide “My Free Taxes,” a free, do-it-yourself online tax filing program.

For in-person filing, individuals will be asked to drop off the needed documents before the taxes are filed. “You come in, fill out some intake paperwork and talk to a preparer and the preparer makes sure you have (all necessary documents),” Laird explained. “All documents are scanned and the taxpayer leaves with the originals.”

After the tax return is prepared and reviewed by another volunteer, the taxes are ready to be filed. “They can come back in or choose to sign electronically,” Laird noted.

For complete details, including a list of VITA office locations, visit www.Chester CountyFreeTaxes.org. Individuals with questions may also contact Laird at dlaird@QuietRevolution.org or 610-380-9099.

The Worst Store in Springville

Submitted by Leona Baker for the Historical Society of Salisbury Township

Three Worst brothers immigrated to the Lancaster County area in 1760. One brother, Peter, and his wife, Barbara, moved to Springville in Salisbury Township. In 1864, Jacob, another member of the family, owned the first store in Springville, where the town’s first post office was set up.

In the 1800s, it was common practice to house a post office in the general store. Post office is somewhat of a misnomer, for the entire setup was a desk, a chair and an upright box partitioned into small cubicles. Postal patrons’

names were printed on the fronts of the cubicles. When mail was delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, it would be sorted by the postmaster, usually the store owner, and checked for proper postage; if postage was due, the recipient had to pay up before given his or her mail. After being sorted, it was placed in the patron’s cubicle for pickup the next time that person came to the store. For those who lived on outlying farms, that might be more than a month.

Auction By George L. Gibney/Auctioneer MD license #1884 410-658-5649 Sale For Still Waters Angus Farm

The Salisbury Township 1870 census lists Henry K. Worst, age 35, as a dry good merchant, running the Springville store. He and his wife, Susan, had three children. Ten years later, the now 45-yearold Henry was again listed as owner of the store, but his son-in-law, Clayton DeHaven, ran it. Clayton’s son Edward P. was expected to take over when he was old enough. However, tragedy occurred: Clayton died in 1898, leaving wife Catherine with four young children.

By the turn of the century, 64-year-old Henry was again running the store. His daughter Catherine, age 36, and her children were living with Henry and his wife. Henry’s other son, Henry L. Worst, age 30, appears to have taken over the operation of the Springville General Store. By 1910, he is listed on census records as a “retail merchant, general store.”

Young Edward, Catherine’s son, seems to have spent much of his youth helping out in the store, and by the time he became proprietor, the store was a thriving business.

For Photos & Listing, visit www.auctionzip.com #1806

In Joan Lorenz’s book, “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,” Edward’s daughter Kitty Ann described the store as she knew it: “Entering the store, Ed’s office was located immediately to the left. Candy and other cases (of goods) made up

Our Gap area church has a great opportunity for someone who has a passion and calling, to work with young children to prepare them for school. If you have a strong, vibrant Christian faith we would be excited to talk to you about a part-time position working with three year olds and preschool age children in our preschool program. Some early child education and/or experience working with young children in a teaching setting would be preferred.

the left-hand counters; a wide aisle led to the back. To the right were benches covering kegs of nails, and chairs were there as well. Along the wall were many kinds of merchandise in display cases, on counters and in wall shelves. Most evenings the ‘storesitters’ wandered in to sit and talk, munch pretzels and cheese and gather the news of the day. The cheese sold was considered the best in the county. People came from as far as Mountville and Lancaster to buy a chunk cut from the big round that sat on a counter.”

Local resident Fred Seldomridge remembers when the only telephone in Springville was at the store and people came to make calls. Incoming calls meant that a clerk would run to the recipient’s house to report the call.

“The Manor” will return to Greystone Hall

Greystone Hall and Colonial Playhouse will present the return of “The Manor” by Kathrine Bates on Thursday, March 2, through Sunday, March 12. The two-act play will be held in Greystone Hall, 2450 Aram Ave., West Chester, with performances at 7 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

“The Manor” takes places as the 12 actors and audience travel room by room as a story about money, marriage, murder, and madness plays out in the mansion’s stately walls.

Adding to the immersive nature of the show, the tickets for this special theatrical event include sweet and savory refreshments served in the mansion’s dining room. Audiences will find themselves at the center of a 1920s wedding reception, even sampling a vintage overthe-top wedding cake.

Tickets includes the show and experience, plus refreshments at intermission. Tickets are available at www .greystonehall.com.
