Octoraro Watershed Association Sets Photography Contest on virtual platforms. “A year has gone by and people have learned to adapt and educate themselves (on computer technology),” she said. “I anticipate more entries as a result of that.” It is not necessary to live in the Octoraro Watershed to participate in the contest, which is open to photographers of any age. Entries will be judged in three age categories: Adult, age 18 and above; Youth, ages 13 to 17; and Youth 2, age 12 and under.

t took New Providence resident Kim Mowery less than two days to write “The Crownless King,” the first book in her Christian children’s series “The Pilgrimage of Jacki and Gerri.” Its origins, however, date back more than 80 years. Mowery, who grew up in Parkesburg and and attended Octorara schools, was 14 years old when she learned that she had twin aunts who died in childhood. Her grandmother, Sarah June, never spoke about the girls, so when she died when Mowery was 19, any information she could have shared died with her. After she married and had three sons, Mowery experienced her own child loss. In 2005, her daughter, whom she named Sarah June, developed a cancerous brain tumor at 16 months and died two-and-ahalf years later. Mowery realized that she could relate to the first Sarah June. In 2014, Mowery set out to learn more about the twins. She found their burial site in Ohio and
“My grandmother always wanted to be a writer, but she used to say the 1930s and ’40s weren’t the time for women authors.” “There is no such thing as coincidence, only divine intervention,” said Mowery. For years, Mowery had wanted to write a book about her grandmother’s life as a way to bring her back to Earth and allow her to grieve the loss of her twins. Instead, she felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit to focus on the children. The Pilgrimage series features their imagined adventures in heaven and provides
a way for youngsters to personally connect with Jesus Christ and biblical principles. The books are illustrated by local artist Anna Kelsey and are available in paperback and hardcover wherever books are sold. Mowery also donated a copy to Quarryville Library, from which it may be borrowed by patrons. “I never thought in a million years that I’d write kids’ books,” Mowery commented. “My grandmother always wanted to be a writer, but she used to say the 1930s and ’40s weren’t the time for women authors. All these years later, her dreams are coming true (through me).” Mowery wants her books to encourage readers and to give them hope. “This Earth isn’t our home,” she explained. “People need to look beyond what’s here on this Earth because it’s going to be gone one day.” For more information about Mowery and “The Crownless King,” readers may visit www.authorkimberlymowery.com.

Local amateur photographers are invited to participate in the annual Octoraro Watershed Association (OWA) Photography Contest by submitting photos taken in the watershed area, which includes 208 square miles in southern Chester and Lancaster counties, as well as Cecil County, Md. Because of the pandemic, this year’s event will give photographers an opportunity to email their entries for the first time. In past years, only mailed-in prints were accepted for the contest. “We had to cancel (the contest) last year, but because we have seen how well virtual entries can work, we decided to give it a try,” said Shotty Sprenkle, contest organizer. Sprenkle said she believes that this year’s contest will attract even more photographers because the pandemic has caused many people to rely

and look for books for sale. For our big book sale, we set up tables right in the (main part of the) library,” explained library staff member Patricia Lee Prange-Smith. A unique aspect of the book sale and the Book Corner is that shoppers can purchase books by donation only; there are no set prices. “We have people that come in that are very generous, (but) we take whatever people give us,” Prange-Smith said. For the March book sale, books will be sorted by adult fiction and nonfiction, and there will be a section for children’s books, including board books and picture books. Most of the books offered at the sale are donated by the public. Others have been taken out of the library’s circulation. All books are sterilized and put into quarantine for at least a week prior to being sold.
Prange-Smith said that future plans call for the library to have mini book sales and membership drives when Parkesburg once again hosts Final Fridays, which offer special activities on Main Street on the last Friday of each month from April through October. Other library programs are in the works and will begin as soon as pandemic restrictions are lifted. In other news, the library announced the winners of its Guess Jar contest. “Every month we put (out) a jar filled with items that focus on children - candy or stickers,” Prange-Smith explained. “Then, you pay (a nominal fee) and (write down) your name, phone number and Nancy Sayer, a volunteer at Parkesburg Free Library, your guess. The Health and Welfare Foundation of Southern Chester County (HWFSCC) has provided a $10,000 grant to Maternal & Child Health Consortium (MCHC) for a new collaborative program with La Comunidad Hispana (LCH) and Chester County Food Bank. The grant will support a bilingual Diabetes and Heart Disease Prevention Program (DHDPP) for economically disadvantaged mothers and their children and families living in Southern Chester County. The program leverages MCHC’s existing Healthy Start and Family Center home visiting programs’ resources and infrastructure, along with group workshops provided to participants, their families, and the broader community.
LCH will provide physical education by Zoom for the program, and Chester County Food Bank will provide healthy food boxes and seedlings along with potting soil for container gardens in the spring. HWFSCC launched a Healthy Family Living Challenge in February 2020. The intent was to challenge local nonprofits to develop a collective impact approach to support healthy family living through increased access and engagement with healthy food and physical activity opportunities. After a pause related to the pandemic, this is the first phase of the challenge. For more information, readers may contact Joan Holliday at dochollisv@aol.com.

Chester County was awarded $902,507 in Growing Greener state grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. The grants will fund stream restoration of Plum Run and support projects for forested riparian buffers and implementation of agricultural best management practices, or BMPs, in the county. The grants were awarded to Stroud Water Research Center Inc. in the amount of $707,818 and Brandywine Red Clay Alliance in the amount of $194,689. The Stroud Water Research Center project will implement 44 agricultural BMPs and 58.1 acres of riparian forest buffers on eight properties, including seven farms, in Chester County, in Phase 2 focus areas of the Delaware River Watershed Initiative. These investments will greatly reduce runoff pollution and additionally assist municipal separate storm sewer system communities so that their overflow is less likely. “Why Old Places Matter,” the first program from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., will feature keynote speaker Tom Mayes, chief legal officer, National Trust For Historic Preservation. Mayes is the author of the book “Why Old Places Matter: How Historic Places Affect Our Identity and WellBeing.” “Preservation, Planning and Protection Standards” by speaker Jeannine Speirs, senior preservation planner, Chester County Planning Commission, will follow from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. “Diversity and Historic Preservation” will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Speakers will be Bertha Jackmon, historian, Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, Devon, and Tonya Thames-Taylor, professor, West Chester University. The final program, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will be “Historic Places in Open Spaces” by John Snook, retired senior adviser, Brandywine Conservancy. Kathleen Hood, chair of CCHPN’s education and programs committee, noted that each speaker is an expert in his or her field of preservation. “ We brainstormed about all the different topics we might be interested in presenting at the annual spring workshop for 2021,” Hood noted. “Once we had an idea of the topics, we brainstormed the possible presenters.” According to Hood, the virtual spring workshop is taking the place of the annual in-person event. “It was always a one-day event live from 8:30 to 12:30, and because of the pandemic we

Jed King, a history teacher and the head football coach at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, was there when football began at Octorara. “I was digging the holes and helping to pour the cement for the goal posts. I watched the bleachers get redone,” he said. “To see this program grow from what we were (to) what we’ve become is amazing.” Now, 15 years later, the Octorara Area Education Association has announced that King was named the Coach of the Year for Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League. The winner of the annual award is selected
by all of the head coaches in the L-L League. “The coach of the team that wins the section is usually the person most people vote for,” explained King. “I voted for Bob Miller from ELCO (Eastern Lebanon County) High School because his team won the section, so I was not expecting to get the vote. (I believe) they voted for me because Octorara had such a good year - such an improvement from last year, where we only had two wins.” Despite a shortened 2020 season, which included many new health and safety protocols because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this was Octorara’s first winning season, finishing

and struggling and battling through tough games and tough years with kids who did not have a football upbringing,” said King, a graduate of the Solanco School District. “Getting to see the successful growing of a program was really rewarding for me as a coach.” For winning the honor, King received a commemorative clock, which includes a plaque with a Coach of the Year inscription. “It’s not an award just about me. This is really an award for the team, the staff and the community,” he said, also crediting his wife, Michelle, for her support through his 15 years of coaching. “Watching the football program at Octorara grow has been a pleasure. It’s been a journey. That what life is about; it’s the journey, not the destination.”.

with a 6-2 record. “My best record prior to this was 5-6. We never had a winning season until this year. ELCO was the only team we lost to this year in our section, 22-19,” King reported. “This is the most successful team I have ever coached. If this was a normal year, we would have made the district playoffs, (but) they took less teams because of COVID.” Many of this year’s team members played in the Octorara youth football program when it first began. “When they came to football camp in summer (years ago), they were little. Now I (coach) them as young men,” King said. He credited much of this year’s success to the players of the Class of 2021, five of whom earned spots as Section 4 All-Stars. “I am proud of the young men they have grown into, and I can’t wait to see them walk across the stage at graduation,” King said. When King began at teaching at Octorara, he was a defensive coordinator for the Avon Grove High School football team. Soon after, he was asked to be the head coach of a new football program at Octorara. “I watched it grow from being a program that was new
ing during programming and interacting with the youths who visit the center. Last summer, the interns helped with The POINT’s weekly food distributions when the youth center was closed because of the pandemic. Interns also helped distribute Christmas gifts to The POINT families during the holiday season. Now that The POINT has opened its doors to welcome students once again, interns are able to meet with students in small groups, Intern Travis Lankford, a student at Delaware County Community College who is studying childhood education, learned about the internship program from Dwayne Walton, executive director, while Walton was preaching at Brandywine Grace Church, Downingtown. “I felt God calling me to take the job, and I’ve been here since September of 2020,” Lankford reported.
Several of the interns shared that they are learning valuable lessons about how to identify with the youths, many of whom are coping with issues that have manifested during the pandemic. “I’ve learned how kids manage their hurt. It’s become easy to recognize the kids’ pain and how they’re expressing it,” said Lankford. “I’ve learned how to be patient with kids and allow them to get upset and still correct and control situations.” “I have learned to be selfless and to view certain situations through other people’s eyes,” added intern Trevor High, a senior at Lancaster Bible College who is majoring in health and physical education. Mainly, the interns said they enjoy interacting with the youths and staff members. “I enjoy just spending time with the kids and helping them grow,” said High. “I also enjoy growing closer to God with my co-workers.” See The POINT pg 5

A virtual open house, a readathon and a community service project were just some of the activities that took place at Pope John Paul II (PJP II) Regional Catholic Elementary School in West Brandywine during Catholic Schools Week. The theme of this year’s event, which ran from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, was “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” The celebration began on Jan. 31, when student ambassadors spoke about Catholic schools at local churches during Sunday services. PJP II students were also encouraged to wear their PJP II gear to Sunday Mass. Student Council sponsored a school-wide drive to collect baby items for Birthright in Coatesville, a nonprofit organization that assists women facing unplanned pregnancies. Items collected by the students included baby wipes, diapers and baby shampoo. In honor of Dr. Seuss, “Green Eggs and Eagles” was celebrated on Feb. 2, when students were invited to wear Eagles green. Students also took part in the inaugural Dr. Seuss-themed readathon, which ran from Feb. 1 through midnight on Feb. 5. According to Maria Sam-

son, development director, students got credit for minutes read in their classrooms and at home. Younger students could record the number of minutes that books were read to them. The readathon was also a fundraiser; students were invited to ask friends and family members for financial support during the week. With assistance from their parents, students recorded their progress on a secure web platform. “It was neat that students had their own profile pages with a photo, and, if they raised $200 or more, they got a shout out on (the PJP II) Facebook (page) as a ‘Superstar,’” Samson explained. For every $25 they raised, students received a ticket to be entered into a random drawing. Prizes included a computer tablet. One student won the honor of being “Administrator for the Day.” “In total they read over 58,000 minutes, and raised more than $30,000,” Samson reported. On Feb. 3, students in grades five through eight competed in a “Super Bowling” tournament where teams had a chance to compete for a trophy. In honor of Dr. Seuss, students dressed up on Wacky Tacky Wednesday, wearing

tracks, students can either complete all five years in Immaculata’s accelerated MAT program - saving time and money - or earn a Bachelor of Science degree and be prepared for other graduate programs within the field. Courses have a variety of flexible formats, including online and hybrid. Undergraduate athletic training majors learn foundational knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and exercise science to prepare for graduate studies in athletic training or related disciplines. Students in the three-plus-two track enter the MAT program starting in their fourth year of college. In the master’s program, students utilize evidence-based practices to prevent, diagnose, and treat various conditions in physically active individuals. students could be served academically became a significant issue. Programming to help under-resourced learners was available, but the spaces at TCC where help could be offered were in need of renovation. In April 2020, several entities - PVSD, Community Action Partnership (CAP), the PPL Foundation, and individuals and businesses from the Paradise-area community joined together to sponsor the remodeling of two classrooms, which would be connected by a doorway and would be called Brave Kids Learning Center. The first room would become offices for the staff members
who engage with children from birth to sixth grade. The individual offices would be large enough for meetings with students and families, while offering privacy and confidentiality. The second room, which Neff calls the family room, is larger and conducive to clubs and other activities, including structured activities and meeting time for families utilizing The Factory’s family crisis housing. Sponsorships and community contributions raised $80,000 to remodel the two classrooms. “The family room side was completely (remodeled) by volunteers who are in the trades,” said Neff, who

noted she had worked with Ivan Umble and other area subcontractors on the project. “It’s like a town square spot, where everyone sees the value and wants to be a part of that project. That’s what is making the (Brave Kids Learning Center) happen.” Looking forward, Neff is hoping to start a mentorship program that can utilize the family room space after school. “We want to get kids in the building with whatever precautions we need to take,” she said. “We needed that space to be able to let our programs grow and do things daily and work with families directly while the rest of the building is being used (for other programs).” Pointing specifically to the online learning that has been an on-and-off phenomenon since the spring of 2020, Neff noted that COVID-19 restrictions were an impetus to completing the center. “It was our response to kids not engaging with online learning. We realized we needed a space here to respond to that need,” she shared. Before the state was shut down in March of 2020, the four staff members at the Together Community Center (TCC) who work with children from birth to sixth grade were feeling the pinch of not having enough space to meet with students or families. In addition, the four were spread out in the building without easy access to each other. According to Karla Neff, director of Pequea Valley elementary advocacy at The Factory Ministries, the issues became more problematic when the first shutdown occurred and children who attend Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) schools began to attend classes online. “We weren’t having programming at the school, but the need for academic support was rising,” said Neff. “Engagement was low for a lot of students, especially at-risk students.” In fact, even though PVSD quickly made online learning available, about 25% of students were not able to engage virtually. Mock Trial Championships Slated The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition will be held virtually this year, with 233 teams from 199 high schools across Pennsylvania set to compete in the district and regional levels. Sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division, Pennsylvania’s mock trial program is now in its 38th year and is one of the largest in the nation. During the competition, eight-member student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition. Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors and sometimes judges for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the teams’ abilities to prepare their cases, present arguments, and follow court rules. The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 16 high school mock trial teams will advance to the PBA Statewide Mock Trial Championships, which will take place on Friday, March 26, and Saturday, March 27. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held virtually from Thursday, May 13, through Saturday, May 15. This year’s hypothetical case, Estate of George Romero v. Ashley Williams, is a criminal trial to determine whether the defendant is guilty of murdering George Romero with a chemical the defendant prepared. For more information and to read this year’s case, readers may visit www.pabar.org and click on “2021 PBA Statewide Mock Trial Competition turns virtual.” Interested volunteers may contact Maria Engles at 800-932-0311, ext. 2223.
