Students at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will present the family favorite musical “The Lion King Jr.” on Friday, March 13, at 1 and 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. The junior version of the musical is shortened to about an hour and tailored to younger performers, but it retains the same charm and drama of the original. There will be an intermission, with concessions available, making the total time about 90 minutes. “It’s a shorter version. Some of the harder songs are pulled out (and) solo pieces are pulled out to make it kidfriendly,” explained WFCS music teacher Ellen Miller. “The most popular songs you loved from ‘The Lion King’ are in there.” There are some sad moments in the story, but the show is still appropriate

for young members of the audience. “We do a good job of portraying those as well as enjoying the fun moments,” director Elizabeth Eckman said. The musical is a bigger project than the school has undertaken before. “We did smaller musicals in the past few years. This is the first year we could tackle a big production,” Miller shared. “We knew the roles would be filled and done amazingly well.” The cast members are students from all grades at WFCS. “There’s a crazy amount of talent in this school,” Eckman said. “I feel like the musical is a vehicle to grow confidence in these kids, to get them on stage. It’s just awesome to see. They’re doing a bang-up job on it.” Sixth-grader Alexis Fisher is enthusiastic about being a part of the production and playing multiple roles, including a hyena and a vulture. “I love acting, See WFCS pg 7

Rescued Canine Now Offers Comfort To Others By Francine Fulton

A year and a half ago, Rose, a Labradoodle, was struck by a car and left on the side of the road. Today, thanks to the efforts of several good Samaritans and Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, Rose has a new life bringing comfort to others as a certified therapy dog. Although Rose has completely recovered from the accident, she lost one of her legs, which the veterinarians were unable to save due to nerve damage. However, according to her owner, Jackie Gallagher, being a tripod has not affected Rose’s spirit. “We all knew after meeting her for the first time that she would be a therapy dog sometime in the future,” Gallagher said. “She is happy 24/7. This year, Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, received a Pilcrow Grant. Funds raised by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library through events such as the annual Winter Tea and Princess Ball enabled the Friends to donate monies to the library for this purpose. The Pilcrow Foundation was founded in 2013 to continue the work of The Libri Foundation. It aims to provide new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries across the United States. The Pilcrow Foundation supports rural public library communities through its Children’s Book Project. Libraries, in partnership with the Friends of the Library or other local sponsors, raise one-third of the funds needed to purchase new books to build community investment in children’s literacy and the library’s future. The new books provided through the Children’s Book Project become part of the library’s permanent children’s book collection. Moores librarians recently added 100 new titles to the children’s collection as a result of the library’s Pilcrow Grant. In addition to the new books, the library will host various programs in March. New events include Building With BracKitz at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, and Crypto Club at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28. Ongoing events include story time on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.; a book club for adults at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 4 and April 1; Knit and Natter at 1

Their next library visits will be on Saturdays, March 7 and April 18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. In April, Gallagher will bring Rose to visit with children at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. Gilsky noted that children at duPont who may be facing surgery or the loss of a limb may be comforted by visiting with Rose. “(They will see that) this dog who has had an amputation is the happiest and best dog ever,” she said. never in a grumpy mood, and she loves everyone. Two days after her surgery she was racing across the yard. She runs like the wind. She is just an amazing dog, and everyone realized she was special.” Rose was injured on Labor Day weekend in 2018. She was found by a passerby who then brought her to a nearby groomer. “She was found by a girl that saved her life her first angel,” Gallagher said. “She was laying in a cornfield off Route 10 in Cochranville,” explained Lucky Dawg board member Sharon Gilsky. “A person who was driving down Route 10 saw her. They stopped and took her to a groomer, and someone who worked in the groomer’s office Christen Pulaski - took her home. She contacted Lucky Dawg to see if we could help in any way. She called us, and we went to her house to see. At that time, (Rose) wasn’t putting any weight on her leg, and she had some scrapes, bumps and bruises.” On Sept. 6, 2018, Rose was taken in by Gallagher as a foster at the request of Gilsky and Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg. Every attempt was made to contact Rose’s owner, but no one came forward. “We fostered her for about a month before she had the amputation,” Gallagher explained. “I started training her in March of 2019. We went through Level I, Level II and Canine Good Citizen. It took nine months before we completed the schooling that she needed. In December 2019, we took the Therapy Dog International Test.” Gallagher noted that Lucky Dawg helped finance the cost of the classes. Gallagher eventually went from fostering Rose to adopting her. Together, the pair now visit patients at Chester County Hospital and the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, as

Life Transforming Ministries (LTM) has announced that free tax preparation assistance will be available at its six locations through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The offices are located in Coatesville, Downingtown, Exton, Phoenixville, Pottstown and West Chester. Each site offers various day, evening and/or weekend times. VITA is a program of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is offered across the United States in thousands of sites each year. The VITA program, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, is embraced by a broad range of philanthropic and financial service providers like the United Way and Vanguard. Individuals and families who need help filing but who cannot afford to pay a preparer are encouraged to use VITA’s free services. IRS-certified volun-

teers will seek to ensure that families are educated on frequently missed credits they may be eligible for, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. These credits and deductions may reduce a taxpayer’s liabilities and increase his or her refund. All returns are electronically prepared and filed at no cost to the taxpayer. LTM’s policy is to maximize the number of eligible taxpayers who receive the EITC, a credit for those who earn low to moderate incomes up to approximately $60,000, but the organization’s goal is to offer services to anyone who needs help. Volunteers at all of LTM’s sites are capable of preparing tax returns that include wages, interest income, dividends, state tax refunds, unemployment benefits, IRS distributions, pension income, Social Security benefits, simple capital

386 education appointments in 2017 to 958 education appointments in 2019,” said CCWS executive director Myriam Ruager citing statistics for the previous Kennett Square office. “That is when the Family Cornerstone Foundation learned of our need and stepped up in a big way. They purchased this new building and are leasing the space to us at a very modest cost. We are extremely grateful.” “It’s much brighter. Our previous location was more on the outskirts of town, so this is more centrally located,” CCWS development director Michelle Maloney said. “The other difference is just the amount of room that we have here. We had outgrown our site so much, in fact, we were having to meet elsewhere. (Clients) often come in with their children as well. Now we can have space for the children as well as the parents.” Larger and more centrally located than the previous site, located at 645 E. Baltimore Pike, the new location has more than 2,500 square feet of space for the medical, educational and emotional support services. The first floor holds parenting classrooms, a waiting area, a play area for children, a small kitchenette, administrative space and the Parenting Boutique. In the boutique, clients can use points earned for coming to class to get the necessities for their families, such as diapers, wipes, formula, clothing, high chairs, car seats, cribs, personal hygiene items and more. The second floor of the building includes a medical room with an ultrasound machine, a peer counseling/coaching room, an administrative office and a prayer room. The new building has been remodeled, but for the open house, the rooms were mostly empty. The organization is asking See CCWS pg 7

able by visiting the aforementioned website or by calling 610380-9099. Since 2004, Life Transforming Ministries, headquartered in Coatesville, has partnered with the IRS to operate sites in Chester County, and LTM recently opened a new site in Montgomery County. LTM began with a few volunteers preparing 15 returns in 2004, and last year more than 100 volunteers prepared 1,877 free returns, which generated refunds worth millions of dollars. Free tax preparation assistance will be available this year at Life Transforming Ministries’ six locations in Chester and Montgomery counties.

Just days before the grand opening, an anonymous donor pledged to match all gifts dollarfor-dollar up to $23,000 through Sunday, March 15, to help fund the $46,000 renovation budget. “As we celebrate our 35th anniversary this year, we are so humbled and thankful for this new space,” stated Ruager. “We invite everyone in the community to stop by to see the space for themselves. We would love to give you a personal tour and share more about our services and how you can get involved.” “We are looking for volunteers,” Maloney added. “We are most in need of nurses but also administrative help, event planning help, different skilled tradesman - whatever your gift is, we’ll find a way to connect it into the ministry.” CCWS also has offices at 1028 E. Jim Horn began his term as chair of the board of directors for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) on Jan. 28. He succeeds board chair Ken Goddu, who passed the gavel to his successor after completing his two-year term. Horn has been a member of the board of directors for nine years. Horn is president and CEO of The Tri-M Group, a multi-million dollar electrical solutions company, where he began as a designer/estimator in 1983 and worked his way to president in 1995.
