Giving back to the community

Our Lady of Consolation Early Learning Center (OLC-ELC) staff members believe it is never too early for youngsters to learn the important message of helping those who are in need.

That is why each year the preschool holds a food drive for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) at Dutch-Way Farm Market in Gap. This year’s event was a

breakfast food collection held on March 4.

Children, their parents and other family members manned the food donation booth in the store lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day, with each group putting in a one-hour shift. “We do this every year as our community service (project). We try to be very family-oriented and include the families as well,” said Shelly Carr, OLC-ELC assistant director and preschool teacher.

Library Friends set spring book sale

TheFriends of the Moores Memorial Library in Christiana have a message for those who love to read: “Please come and buy books.”

The Friends’ spring book sale will take place in the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The sale will start on Thursday, March 16, from 1 to 7 p.m. and then continue during regular library hours on Friday, March 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, March 18, from 8 a.m. to noon. Admission is free.

As part of the three-day clearance sale, visitors will be able to fill a bag with books for a set price or purchase individual materials. Bags will be provided. “We are spring cleaning to make room for future new donations,” said Jeannette Kolb, Friends vice president.

Also for sale will be large selection of puzzles, music CDs and movies on Blu-ray and DVD, which shoppers will be able to fit into a bag for a set price. “If you have a favorite movie and want to own it, we probably have it here,” said Kolb. There will be plenty of cookbooks and children’s books for sale, as well as paperback and hardback adult fiction. “The fiction will be sorted by prolific authors - Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele and Stuart Woods,’’ Kolb noted. “We have a whole table of James Patterson (books). Some of them are from the library, but some look like they have never been opened.”

Special items, rare books and collectible titles will also be available and individually priced.

All the proceeds from the spring book sale as well as sales from the Read Moore Book Store help support the many programs offered by the library.

Those who visit the Read Moore

Book Store will notice that items are displayed on unique shelving, including a canoe and a baby grand piano. There are bookshelves made from rain gutters, and the young adult section features books displayed on skateboards. Since the library’s building once was home to a bank, shoppers can find rare and unique books in the “vault.”

The Read Moore Book Store is open on Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m. and on and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The store is staffed and maintained by volunteers from the Friends group. For more information, visit www.facebook.com /ReadMooreBookStore.

Additional volunteers are needed. Prospective members are invited to visit www.christianalibrary.org /friends for more information.

To learn about upcoming library events, contact the library at 610593-6683, visit www.christiana library.org or search for “Christiana Library” on Facebook.

Local churches to offer Lenten services

Community members are invited to attend Wednesday evening Lenten services that are being held at local churches.

As part of the program, area churches are taking turns hosting worship every week beginning at 7 p.m. A Good Friday service on April 7 will complete the schedule at Parkesburg Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 406 W. Second Ave.

The first worship service was held on March 8 at Parkesburg United Methodist Church (UMC). The worship schedule will continue at the

following locations: March 15, First Presbyterian Church of Parkesburg, 511 Main St.; March 22, Faith Community UMC, 332 Chester St., Atglen; and March 29, Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St. Each service will include a time of music, worship and fellowship. “We typically invite another pastor to give a short message so that people get to hear pastors other than us in their pulpit,” said Rebecca Brown, pastor of First Presbyterian Church. “On March 15, I will open and close the service and the praise choir from Mount Zion AME will join us. We will have a bulletin so (people) can follow along in the service.”

Annual Chef’s Best planned

frompg 1 ACT in Faith of Greater West Chester will host its 10th annual Chef’s Best on Thursday, March 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. at West Chester University Alumni & Foundation Center, 202 Carter Drive, West Chester. Attendees will experience an evening of food

“Our church hosted the Good Friday service last year, and we had eight pastors participating and over 100 people there. Our sanctuary at the Presbyterian church is pretty big. For me, it was gratifying to see that beautiful sanctuary full of people,” Brown said.

Area churches also partnered to host a service during the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial that was held outdoors in Minch Park. “The community worship that we did as part of the 150th celebration of Parkesburg last spring was a huge success,” Brown noted. “People loved it.”

Brown said that the pastors are connected through Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO), which provides assistance to local individuals and families in need. “We are trying to be more ecumenical. We are trying to foster that sense of a ministerium,” Brown said. “I have only been in Parkesburg a short time, but (I learned that) we really have some great local pastors. Everyone is so welcoming, and we work together really well. It’s really uplifting.”

Lent is a Christian observance that starts on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, not including Sundays, representing the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness before His crucifixion. The 40-day period for Christians is a time to reflect, fast and give penance in preparation for the resurrection of Christ, which is celebrated on Easter Sunday, which falls on April 9 this year.

Food drive

During the food drive, shoppers were given a bright orange note reminding them to purchase breakfast items, including cereal and pancake mix, as they entered the store, and they were invited to drop off their donations as they exited. The students also collected cash donations.

Carr noted that prior to the food drive, students were given a lesson about people in need. They also created a sign to attract donations that stated, “You have two hands … one to help yourself and the second to help others.”

“They know that people are hungry. The whole idea is giving back to the community and doing for others,” Carr said.

The OAFC had a trailer stationed outside the grocery store so that the students and their parents could fill it with donations. “They provided a banner, a collection container (for people who

wanted to donate money)

and a trailer to collect the food. We provided the manpower,” said Carr.

Although OAFC is still tallying the amount of food and money collected, Carr said that the collection drive was a success. “People respond really well to the kids, and they want to help,” she added.

The OAFC is currently in need of other groups willing to conduct food drives. For more information, call 610857-4000 or visit www.face book.com/OctoraraArea FoodCupboard or www .octfood.com.

What consumers can do to support local farmers

Farming has never been a vocation for individuals looking for easy work. Farmers typically work long hours, braving the elements regardless of how unpleasant the weather may be.

The goal of all that hard work is to ensure individuals who live in rural, urban and suburban communities have constant, readily available access to healthy foods. Such devotion merits support, and there are many things consumers can do to show their appreciation for local farmers.

- Buy fresh foods at a local farmers market. Farmers markets are many foodies’ favorite places, but they aren’t exclusive to individuals with a passion for food. Everyone needs to eat, so why not eat foods grown locally, which are generally more fresh and appetizing than imported fruits and vegetables sold at chain grocery stores? Even individuals who don’t typically eat fresh fruit and vegetables can find something

delectable at a local farmers market, where anything from homemade tomato sauces to locally raised fresh beef and pork might be on sale.

- Order directly from local farms. Some farmers have embraced the e-commerce revolution and begun selling the foods they grow to consumers via their own websites. Research local farms and determine if it’s possible to buy directly from them.

Farms may offer delivery or pickup, and consumers can enjoy fresh foods even more knowing that they helped farmers earn higher profits by buying directly from them.

- Check labels before buying items in local grocery stores. Packaging labels will indicate where fruits and vegetables came from. When possible, choose items produced by local farmers. These products

may include fruits, vegetables, meat, or desserts like pies. Locally produced foods often taste more fresh than items sent from overseas or distant farms, and consumers will feel better knowing they helped to support local farmers.

- Spread the word. Get the word out after a satisfying experience with local farms and farmers. Whether it’s buying food from farms or taking advantage of family

Chef’s Best

days that let kids enjoy a day on the farm, sharing positive experiences via social media or word of mouth can be a great way to inspire neighbors to support local farmers as well.

Consumers can do much to support local farmers. In addition to feeling good about supporting their rural neighbors, consumers can also enjoy a meal featuring locally grown, fresh foods.

Statewide cleanup initiative planned

Registration is open for the 2023 Pick Up Pennsylvania, a community improvement initiative sponsored by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful. Pick Up Pennsylvania is a yearlong initiative; however, events scheduled from Wednesday, March 1, through Wednesday, May 31, will be eligible to receive free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests provided by support from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and Keep America Beautiful, while supplies last.

Events can include litter cleanups, illegal dump cleanups, community greening and beautification, special collections and education events. Events must be registered at www.keeppabeautiful.org to receive free cleanup supplies.

As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association are sponsoring trash disposal free of charge or at a reduced rate for registered program participants at participating landfills from Saturday, April 1, through Sunday, April 30, with prior approval.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will host a community cleanup training webinar on March 1 from 7 to 8 p.m. The training will include technical support for choosing an event location, organizing and mobilizing volunteers, coordinating trash disposal, accessing supplies and resources, and more. A link will be available closer to the date of the webinar.

Individuals, friends, family, and groups both large and small can help clean up vacant lots, streets, and riverbanks; plant gardens and trees; or mulch a local playground. To host an event, join an event nearby, inquire about free supplies and trash disposal, or access the webinar, visit the aforementioned website, choose Programs, then Pick Up PA, or contact Michelle Dunn at 877-772-3673, ext. 113, or mdunn@keeppabeautiful.org.

Organizations interested in becoming a supporter may contact Deb Woolley at dwoolley@keepppabeautiful.org.
