Lions Club To Hold Food Drive BY FRANCINE FULTON

Shoppers who visit Dutch-Way Farm Market, 365 Route 41, Gap, on Saturday, March 20, will have the opportunity to donate food for the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) as part of the Parkesburg Lions Club Food Drive.

VisionCorps staff member Erika Rothermel, teacher of the visually impaired, provides virtual teletherapy to a young client during the pandemic.

VisionCorps Helps Clients Learn To Live Independently “Visual impairment should not be a barrier to one’s independence. (The visually impaired) can do the same things a sighted person can do - they just have to do it a little bit differently,” stated Chris Ament, vice president of rehabilitation and education for VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization that offers a variety of services to the blind and people with low vision. VisionCorps, which was established in Lancaster County in 1926, opened a branch in Chester County about seven years ago. The organization also serves Adams, Lebanon and York counties. “We were asked by the Pennsylvania Association for the Blind to provide some services in Chester County,” Ament explained. “We started with vision screenings and now we provide our full complement of services.” VisionCorps provides instruction to those with visual impairments on how to manage the challenges of everyday life. It also offers sight loss support groups and free vision screenings for children ages 2 to 6, and it partners with the Pennsylvania Vision Foundation to provide vouchers for free eye exams and basic eyeglasses for people who qualify

financially. VisionCorps also offers virtual programs to organizations and employers about its services. “We provide mobility instruction, which is basically teaching those with low vision how to travel safety and with confidence in their community,” Ament explained.

“Visual impairment should not be a barrier to one’s independence. (The visually impaired) can do the same things a sighted person can do - they just have to do it a little bit differently.” “Low-vision occupational therapy is for those who may have trouble with daily living - reading, writing and lighting issues. Anything they do on a daily basis that may be difficult, we help with a solution.” A program of action is tailored to each client and services are provided free of charge through grants and community donations. “Each person gets an individualized assessment and together we create a plan based on their needs and the goals they want to accomplish,” noted Ament.

Because of the pandemic, VisionCorps did close for a time in March of 2020, but it pivoted to a hybrid model, which combines virtual and in-person programming. “Some of what we are doing is critical,” Ament stated. “You can’t teach someone how to cross a street over a computer. We made sure that we had a protocol and safety procedures in place with the mindset that our clients and our employee safety was paramount. We were able to continue to provide services in person where needed.” He said that the biggest change since the pandemic has been transitioning the support groups from inperson meetings to virtual. “We were able to add more groups because of (the virtual platform) across all five counties,” Ament stated. “Last month, we had 20 different support groups that operate virtually.” “We are social people and for a lot of our client base, isolation is a huge concern,” he added. “Through our training and education and support groups, we are trying to lessen that isolation.” For more information about VisionCorps in Chester County, call 610-738-3008 or visit www.visioncorps.net/chester-county.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, Lions Club members will be stationed in the lobby of the market. Shoppers will be offered a list of items most needed by the OAFC as they enter the store, and volunteers will collect donations as shoppers exit the store. Suggested donations include canned vegetables, boxed potatoes, rice dishes in a bag, cereal, peanut butter and condiments. Especially needed are items that are nutritious and can easily be made into a meal, including beans, dry pastas and sauces, soups and canned tuna and chicken. “The food bank brings a trailer to Dutch-Way and leaves it there so that we can load collections as we receive them. They then come pick it up once our efforts are over,” explained Lion Robin McKenna. “The food bank is so organized. (It is) such a great organization.”

Chester County high school students are invited to take part in the fifth annual art contest presented by the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC). The agency is celebrating its 45th anniversary with the theme “45 Years of Empowerment.” Students should use the anniversary theme as inspiration for their artwork. Last year, the artwork was on display for a week at the Exton Chamber of Commerce for judging, and the awards ceremony was held at the same location. This year’s contest has been altered because of the pandemic. “In a typical year, the students had to submit art pieces to us and we had them digitally uploaded as well,” explained Danielle Dougherty, DVCCC director of philanthropic partnerships, one of the contest organizers. “People could vote on social media for the piece they liked the best. It culminated in an in-person reception where we announced first-, second- and third-place winners as chosen by the judges and the People’s Choice Award chosen by everyone via social media. This year, we are doing all of the same things, except the reception (on Saturday, April 10) will be held

virtually via Zoom, where we will announce the winners.” Digital images of the artwork will be featured on DVCCC’s social media pages and website, while the art will be on view at the Brow Bar, 131 W. Gay St., West Chester, during the week of Monday through Friday, April 5 to 9. “They have offered their storefront windows for us to display all of the students’ artwork,” said Dougherty. “People can view it from outside safely and the judges will be able to view the artwork. People can still vote for their favorites on our “Hand in Hand” by Maria Coll, a student at Phoenixville Facebook page.” Area High School, was the winner of last year’s People’s A panel of judges, led Choice Award in the Domestic Violence Center of Chester by Victoria Wyeth, grandCounty’s annual high school student art contest. daughter of noted artist Andrew Wyeth, will deterand their dependent children. by Monday, March 29. Planning Commission To Host Virtual Programs BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Chester County Planning Commission recently released a spring calendar of events that will include virtual programs that are free and open to the community via Zoom. A Spring Planners’ Forum will be held on Tuesday, March 30, from 9 to 10 a.m. The topic will be “What will be the longterm impacts of the pandemic?” The program will begin with a networking session from 8 to 8:30 a.m., when people joining the meeting will be put into breakout rooms to meet other planners. Presentations will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include perspectives on the topic by the following three speakers: Becky Bradley, American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), executive director of the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission; Robert Henry, Transportation Demand Management Certified Professional (TDM-CP), executive director of Greater Valley Forge Transportation; and Dorothy Ives Dewey, Ph.D., AICP, Professional Planner (PP), planning program administrator at West Chester University. After the presentations

conclude at 9:30 a.m., attendees will be invited to stay on the Zoom call to ask additional questions and connect with other participants. The program is targeted to those who serve on local planning commissions. “Planners could be either professional or volunteer,” explained Brian O’Leary, AICP, executive director of the Chester County Planning Commission. “Professional planners include the staff at the county planning commission, planners who work for municipalities and planners who work as consultants, usually with planning firms, engineering firms or landscape architecture firms. Volunteer planners include citizens who serve on municipal planning commission boards or similar boards, such as an environmental action committee or a historic preservation board.” The series of programs offered by the planning commission began with a review of the county’s Climate Action Plan on March 4. To view a recording of the meeting, visit www.news.chescoplanning.org/ draft-climate-action-plan-2021. Upcoming programs will include an Open Space Summit

on Thursday, April 29, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The virtual event will include a review of open space accomplishments in 2020 and an overview of a county-wide inventory of open space protection tools. The final program will be a Town Tours Kickoff and a Juneteenth commemoration on Thursday, June 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event will include a virtual program on the Underground Railroad, followed by a walking tour in West Chester. The work of the Chester County Planning Commission includes the implementation of Landscapes3, Chester County’s updated comprehensive policy plan. The goals of the plan include preserving open spaces, protecting natural resources and promoting economic growth. “The events (on April 29 and June 17) are focused on the Landscapes3 goals of Preserve, Protect, Appreciate, Live, Work and Connect,” O’Leary added. To learn more and to register for the virtual programs, visit www.chescoplanning.org. Individuals may contact the planning commission at ccplanning@chesco.org or 610-344-6285.

Community Garden from pg 1 “The area is opening up for expanding the garden, too, for other Girl Scout or Boy Scout projects,” said Shelby, noting that plans also call for adding a flower garden this year. Shelby started seeds in the middle of April and the beginning of May, which resulted in seedlings that she planted in June. The plantings included different types of tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, watermelon and herbs like basil, parsley, rosemary and oregano. The garden also featured a late harvest of radishes. In July 2020, Shelby created a “Parkesburg Community Garden” Facebook page where she posted updates about the plants, and local residents could share information about the garden as well. The page also contains recipes and photos of how the harvested vegetables were prepared. Throughout the summer, Shelby and her fellow troop members watered and weeded the garden. In September, during a weekend home from college, Shelby was able to visit the garden and harvest

vegetables, including cherry tomatoes and green beans. Shelby emphasized that the produce grown in the garden is meant for anyone. “Anyone can go pick and take what they want,” she stated. “Last year everything was harvested by locals.” Shelby is a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School and the Technical College High School - Brandywine Campus. “I am a lifetime member of Girl Scouts, so I

still help and am a part of Girl Scouts,” she added. The community garden is located in North Park near the Parkesburg School Apartments and can be accessed from North Culvert Street and Rockland Avenue. For more information, search for “Parkesburg Community Garden” on Facebook. Those interested in volunteering are asked to message Shelby and her mother on the Facebook page.

Now that Shelby is in school at Alvernia University, where she is majoring in biology, she hopes that others in the community will take over running the garden while she is away. “The garden has not been taken over yet,” said Shelby. “Since I’m at college, it’s hard for me to meet with people down at the garden and help, but my mom (Michelle Kreger) is willing to help and talk to locals while I’m away.” Community members are needed to start seedlings to get ready for the growing season, or they can grow their own plants in the raised beds. Volunteers are also needed to help tend the gardens throughout the spring, summer and fall by watering, weeding and harvesting the produce. “I have a bunch of seeds that were donated when I started my project that I can still use, but I need help or volunteers to help me start the seedlings,” said Shelby. The garden consists of four raised bed gardens made from cinder or concrete blocks, which Shelby and her fellow Scouts painted and sealed.

Girls Advisory Board Awards Grants Each year, a group of young women from Chester County high schools are tasked with an important assignment - to award grants to nonprofit organizations and agencies that target the needs of women and girls. The students are part of the Girls Advisory Board (GAB) program, which has been presented annually for the past 25 years by the Chester County Fund for Women and Girls (CCFWG). GAB is a nationally recognized girls’ grantmaking program open to high school girls entering 10th and 11th grades. Members of the 2020-21 GAB class recently awarded $19,000 in funding to five local nonprofit organizations. The recipients are the Domestic Violence Center of Chester County, Alianzas de Phoenixville, The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, The Clinic in Phoenixville and La Comunidad Hispana in Kennett Square, now known as LCH Health and Community Services. Girls are invited to apply for the program in May, and applicants are chosen over the summer. The group begins meeting in September at the start of the school year. “ We have 20 members on the GAB,” noted Maeve Kelly, GAB communications and program associate.

“They are from school districts all over the county, and they represent different towns.” She noted that the grants are awarded each year thanks to an endowment that was established by the CCFWG 25 years ago. Because of the pandemic, the girls had an even greater challenge this year. Most meetings and visits to the agencies that applied for the grants were done virtually. “The first few meetings were in person outdoors with social distance precautions in place when the weather would allow. After that, they met virtually,” Kelly said. “(In a typical year), the girls decide where they want to do site visits, and they would go the nonprofit, meet with the leaders there and learn more about the organization in person.” “This year, there were no on-site visits; they were all virtual,” Kelly continued. “I think it was challenging. Whenever they went there in person, they could feel like they were a part of what was

going on. They were not meeting clients but meeting the leaders and talking to them. It is more powerful to be there in person. It was harder virtually, but it was all we could do this year.” This year’s wrap-up ceremony, where the grantees are highlighted, was held virtually on March 9. Last year, the event took place at the Chester County History Center in West Chester. Kelly said an added benefit of the program is that the girls become friends through the grant-making process. “They remain in touch, which is nice to see,” she stated. “One of the things the girls like the most about the program is meeting other peers that are likeminded and share their interests. It’s a powerful part of the program.” Over the past 25 years, CCFWG has awarded more than $3.5 million to 80 local nonprofit organizations. For more information, readers may visit www.ccfwg.org.

“You are not forgotten.” That’s the message behind Blankets of Honor, an organization that works to recognize veterans and their supporters. Blankets of Honor began as a subcommittee of the Marietta Legion Riders Post 466 about a year ago, said David Chobanoff, chief marketing officer. “We give a blanket to a veteran, a Gold Star parent or a vet supporter, and we do a presentation,” he explained. “ We hand them a blanket depicting the branch they (or their loved one) served in.” The blankets not only represent comfort and warmth to the recipient, but also have a deeper meaning, he stated. “The threads of a blanket are intertwined, and that represents how we are holding the person up. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.” Blankets of Honor began as a Facebook group, and the response has been overwhelming, Chobanoff said. “We now have over 1,200 people in the group,” he remarked. “We have given out more than 50 blankets. … The whole project has been very well received.” As a nonprofit organization, Blankets of Honor relies on donations from the community as well as proceeds from the sale of apparel and accessories at https://blankets-of -honor.creator-spring.com. “We are always looking for

donations,” Chobanoff said, noting that the blankets are costly since they are quality, queen-size blankets. The group also gives out challenge coins at presentations and often includes decals or other items depending on the recipient. “We are also looking for people to nominate a veteran or someone to receive a blanket,” he stated, adding that World War II vets and anyone who has deteriorating health is moved to the top of the list. “Anyone is eligible to receive a blanket as long as they served or are connected to someone who served. It doesn’t matter if they served in combat, in peace, overseas or on U.S. soil the whole time. They are a veteran to us, and they deserve our recognition.” Blanket presentations are open to the public, and Chobanoff added that participants are moved by the ceremony. “It’s very emotional,” he stated. “Sometimes, we try to surprise the vet with help from a family member, but even if the vet knows we’re doing this, it’s very moving and special.” Currently, Blankets of Honor has made presentations in Lancaster, York, Lebanon and Chester counties, but Chobanoff said the organization has lofty goals. “We’d love to have every veteran in the nation covered in a blanket,” he stated. “It’s a huge goal to set, but we’re trying to get there one county at a time.” For more information on Blankets of Honor, readers may visit www.blankets ofhonor.org.
