Octorara Envirothon Club Loving Nature BY FRANCINE FULTON

Youngsters who love nature, wildlife and taking part in outdoor activities make up the Envirothon Club at Octorara Elementary School. The after-school club is composed of third- and fourth-grade students who also spend part of the school

year preparing for the Envirothon competition held annually in May. During the club’s most recent meeting, students designed reusable tote bags, painted watercolor aquatic critters, researched Pennsylvania trees and birds and studied other facts in preparation for the competition. open to the public on Monday, March 28, at 10 a.m. at 121 Main St., across from the borough hall. Features of the new building include additional programming space, plenty of parking, a new snack area, a meeting room and exhibition space to hold art shows and more. The old library was scheduled to be closed on March 21 and 22 and will remain closed on Wednesday, March 23, through Saturday, March 26, during which time more than 12,000 books will be relocated and shelved at the new building. A grand opening celebration will take place on Saturday, April 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “People can come in (and see the new library), and we will have a large collection of free, new children’s books to give away,” said Robbyn Kehoe, library director, noting there will also be a quilt display on exhibit for the opening. The main floor of the library features the adult fiction section,

E

the teen section and the children’s area. Chairs will be placed in the front windows so that patrons can read while enjoying the sunlight. “ We will have a local history shelf and two comfy chairs where you can sit (and read),” said Kehoe. “ We have a small room - the Zimmerman Room - for meetings. (The name) is to honor the Zimmermans, who we rented from (at the old location) for 26 years.” According to Kehoe, the new library building is known by many as Sener’s Store, which was open from 1938 to 1978 and then John Brady’s Atglen Market, which was in business from 1978 to 2001. “We wanted to honor the building’s history and its importance in the town, but it needed to be functional,” said Kehoe. “We wanted it to be a blend of the old and the new. That’s why we have the dark wood shelving, instead of the regular steel cantilever shelving.” See Atglen Library pg 3

Atglen Library from pg 1 Founded in 1945 by George Sener and others, APL was first located in the old borough hall on Main Street. This building was damaged in a fire in 1994, and the library used space at Faith Community Church for two years. In 1996, the old Summers & Zim’s office was renovated for the library’s use. This space was enlarged in 2009 and renovated in 2014. “With the return to Main Street, the space where George Sener had his general store, it feels a bit like going home,” Kehoe remarked. Other features of the new library facility are ADA-accessible restrooms, a water fountain with a

bottle filler, a state-of-the-art air filtration system and a side entrance that will feature rotating displays on its mural wall. “It’s not about the building anymore. It’s about what the building allows us to do,” said Kehoe. “We can have movies, art shows and arts and crafts (programs). We can have a coffeehouse concert.” When the move is completed, Kehoe said, she plans to enjoy the new library herself. “I’m going to sit in the window with my coffee and read my book,” she said. For more information about the library and the move, visit www .atglenpubliclibrary.org or www.face book.com/AtglenPublicLibrary.

Beth Foss

my people were,” she said. “I was patient trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.” So, she decided to check out Wesley Church. Over the years, she’s gotten more involved in the church, and she currently works as the director of congregational care. Beth noted that she and other staff members had noticed that a lot of homeless women who needed food and financial assistance sought help from the church. After realizing there was a need in the community, Beth and a steering committee of three other women at Wesley Church developed a new, yearlong program, Women Empowering Women. The group will meet on the last Saturday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. at Colerain Church, 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood, with the next scheduled meeting on March 26. The group aims to equip women

with the tools to support, care for, and lead themselves and their families. Child care will be provided. The specific issues that are addressed in the program were inspired by a woman Beth has been meeting with who needed some guidance. “Her struggles helped define what reflected the issues we had been seeing as a church,” explained Beth. On Feb. 26, 24 women attended the program’s kickoff session, which had the topic “Personal Goal Setting - Dare to Dream!” Women filled out a color wheel, which illustrated their satisfaction rates in the categories of work, family, friends, spirituality, health, personal growth, money, and living environment. “A lot of women found that they are really out of balance,” commented Beth. “It showed them where they want to put more time and effort.” From there, the

women set goals and prioritized and strategized ways to get to where they want to be. “Sometimes, your soul is craving something more,” said Beth. “This is a program and an opportunity for women who know they’re not where they’re supposed to be, but they don’t know how to help themselves. Hopefully this group, these professionals, and this program give women encouragement, provide them with hope and support, and give them the tools to help them navigate these times.” To sign up, visit https://bit .ly/WomenEmpoweringWomenWC. 5K from pg 4 Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in seven age groups. All Kids Run participants will receive medals. Organizers are seeking gold and silver sponsors for the event. Sponsorship packages include logos on race T-shirts and yard signs. Current sponsors include David Auto, Capitol Heating and Air, The Corner Coffee Shop, and Kauffman Kitchens. Donations of gift cards and themed baskets are also sought for prizes and giveaways. “Each classroom is assigned a theme, and classrooms will each provide baskets,” said Girvin. Martin said she was inspired to direct the 5K after signing up for one that was held by a local Christian school. “I looked at the information, and I thought, ‘ We could do this,’” said Martin, who began working on the project with the PTC and Salisbury staff members in the fall of 2021. Funds raised by the race will help to support field trips, purchase outdoor learning classroom upgrades and additions, and provide teacher grants. Girvin noted that she would especially like to generate funds to help cover student assemblies. The 5K is being timed by Pretzel City Sports, and readers may register at www.pretzelcitysports.com /online-registration. Individuals who register by Friday, April 1, will receive a discount and a T-shirt. Later registrations will include a swag bag.

Event coordinator Anna Mary Barcus confirmed that there will be a golf cart, a milk truck, a fire engine truck, a skid loader, a dump

It’s great we can host these events and be a place for people to have a great time together.” See Trucks pg 9

ATGLEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH: E. Main and Dallas Sts., Atglen, PA. Joe Newsome, Interim Pastor. Join us Sundays at 11am as we preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again so all may come to a personal, saving relationship with Christ.

In the fall of 2021, the congregation at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church (CLPC), 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, was divided into several groups for a “40 Days in the Word” Bible study. Each group had to develop a plan where the members

would do something good to benefit others. A Bible study group of mothers wanted to organize an event that would provide fun for kids, so they decided to plan a touch-a-truck event. On Saturday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., trucks, tractors, and more will fill the parking lots in front of the

Trucks from pg 8 Parking for attendees will be available in front of the church, and an admission donation is strongly suggested. According to Barcus, the mission of touch-a-truck is twofold: to host a community event and to raise funds for CLPC’s “Restore His House” capital campaign for the newly renovated sanctuary, which was built in the 1700s by a group of Christians who came together for worship, music, fellowship, and growth in their knowledge and love of God. Notable changes to the church include the newly exposed balcony, two fieldstone additions on either side of the bell tower, the restored ceiling with gold leaf details, the restored antique

German stained-glass windows, and the refurbished wooden pews, dating to circa 1914. Renovations took about a year and a half to complete. Barcus noted that there will be activities inside the Family Life Center building, and there might be food and beverages available for purchase as well. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, April 3, from noon to 2 p.m. Those interested in bringing a vehicle to the touch-a-truck fundraiser should email Barcus at annamarybarcus@gmail.com at least one week prior to event.
