Secretary Of Agriculture Speaks At Farm Bureau Event By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was the featured speaker at the Chester Delaware County Farm Bureau’s annual spring banquet on March 14 at Octorara Junior-Senior High School in Atglen. Redding’s remarks stressed the importance of agriculture to the state, noting that it makes up 18 percent of Pennsylvania’s economy at approximately $136 billion annually. He explained that a recent study helped his department expand the state’s definition of agriculture, which includes more components than other states. For Pennsylvania, he explained, agriculture now includes all production agriculture, food processing and forestry, as well as the state’s strong equine industry. “It’s important to recognize all of agriculture is important,” he said.
Redding also made remarks on the Farm Bureau’s Farmers Care Program, which helps with food needs across communities throughout the state. “At the end of the day, there is a human on both ends of what we do. The food system is critical to us every day,” Redding said. Another speaker was Kay Moyer of the Penn State University Extension program. Moyer works with Lyme disease awareness, and her responsibilities include presenting at Amish schools each year in Pennsylvania and beyond. There was also a report on the Farm Bureau’s Young Ag Professionals program by Ellie Chandler. Formerly known as the Young Farmers and Ranchers, the program encourages interaction between new and longtime farmers. Events such as the banquet provide networking opportunities. “The connections you make now may last a lifetime,” she said. See Farm Bureau pg 4

Earning The Eagle Scout Honor: A Family Tradition By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Eighteen-year-old Colin Delestienne of Atglen recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, just as his father and three older brothers have done. Among those attending the Court of Honor ceremony at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church were Colin’s parents, Doug and Sharon Delestienne, as well as brothers Nathan, 29, Eagle Scout 2008; Cameron, 27, Eagle Scout 2010; and Tyler, 25, Eagle Scout 2012. “You can’t be any prouder,” said Doug. “I earned my Eagle Scout back in 1978. It was fortunate for myself (that) my wife and I had four sons and I got to relive my childhood.” See Eagle Scout pg 3
Colin Delestienne (left) of Atglen, who recently earned his Eagle Scout rank, was presented with a proclamation at his Court of Honor ceremony by George Stewart, mayor of Atglen.

Preservation Funding from pg 1 At its recent meeting, the Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board awarded Chester County the highest level of funding, $3.74 million, to preserve farmland on two Chester County farms. The state board announced an overall spending threshold of $38 million for the purchase of development rights from 38 farm owners state-wide the highest spending total in more than a decade. Chester County’s award of state funds, added to certified county funds of $5 million for farmland preservation in 2019, positions Chester County as a state leader in funding for agricultural land preservation. Since the start of Chester County’s agricultural land preservation program 30 years ago, more than 40,100 acres of farmland have been preserved. Factoring in current agreements of sale, the number exceeds 41,200 acres. Last December, Chester County preserved its 500th farm. According to Commissioner Kathi Cozzone, Chester County’s agriculture industry generates more than $600 million in revenue each year. Commissioner Terence Farrell noted that the county has invested $106 million in farmland preservation over the course of 30 years. The nine-member Chester County Agriculture Land Preservation Board (ALPB) guides the county on farmland preservation and reviews applications from

Colin’s project was the construction of a new fence at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Parkesburg, where the Delestiennes are members of the congregation. Working on the actual installation of the fence with Colin were members of Troop 20. They installed approximately 200 feet of white vinyl fence for the church preschool. “I had to plan it, then I had to organize it and get the materials. Leading it was the hardest part,” Colin said. “I’ve learned to become a better leader and just a good overall adult.” Colin graduated from Octorara Area High School in 2018, where he was on the

Doug is originally from Bethel Park in western Pennsylvania, where he earned his Eagle rank, but his sons were all members of Troop 20 of Atglen. “I encouraged them, but it had to be their choice,” he said. Colin joined the Boy Scouts of America when he was about 5 years old, and he has worked through the levels to Eagle, the highest rank among Boy Scouts. This is an achievement that only a small percentage of all Boy Scouts ever reach. At the ceremony, Colin presented his Mentor Pin to Mitch King. “He was my Scoutmaster at one point. He retired from being a Scoutmaster, but he was with me through Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts,” Colin said. Part of the process of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is doing a large project that will be of service to the community. It is the Scout’s responsibility to do all the preparation work on the project, organize and

Veterinary care, food and supplies such as crates, bowls and toys are provided. “We look for people to love the dogs until they are adopted. It’s very fulfilling,” said April Robinson, TLC marketing and events director. Robinson noted that the organization has found homes for more than 2,900 dogs since it formed in 2013. “We are proud of that,” she stated. She said people may find it hard to release their foster dogs when permanent homes are found, but TLC tries to make that transition easier. “The cool thing about TLC is that the foster families get to meet the people who are adopting the dog. They can answer questions of the adopters, and they get to see where the dog is ending up,” Robinson explained. “You need

The following year, a post-andbeam-style building was raised by Plain volunteers at 535 Bunker Hill Road, Strasburg, and the Clinic for Special Children (CSC) was off and running. In the three decades since its founding, the CSC has developed from its modest roots into an internationally recognized leader and innovator in rare disease research and care. According to www.clinic forspecialchildren.org, the CSC is designed to be a medical home where children with complex genetic diseases can receive the primary pediatric care they need in an accessible, comfortable, and informed environment. The clinic’s primary but not exclusive focus is on treating the uninsured Amish and

CSC’s mission embodies an idea that challenges each one of us to contribute; only together can we find new ways to enrich lives, alleviate suffering, and create hope. On the eve of the CSC’s 30th anniversary, we are grateful to all of those who have joined hands with us in this effort, and, in so doing, become part of a very special family.” In 1989, the genetic cause of disease was only known for a handful of disorders. Today, by utilizing CSC’s on-site biochemistry and genetics laboratory, which has been managed by Dr. Erik G. Puffenberger since 1998, more than 300 disease-causing genetic changes have been identified. Vocal Competition from pg 1 By Francine Fulton
Three local high school seniors were named the winners of the Chester County Choral Society’s 27th Excellence in Vocal Performance Competition, held on March 16 at the Exton Baptist Church. The contest was open to high school seniors who reside, attend high school or study music in Chester County. The first-place winner of the competition was Sofia Bobrysheva, a mezzo-soprano who is a senior at Downingtown East High School. The runners-up included baritone Francis “Frankie” Jacquette, a senior at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, and Elana Babbitt, a soprano who attends Great Valley High School. Sofia, who is a vocal student of Kim Kronenberg Russell of West Chester, has also studied voice, piano and music theory at the Royal Canadian Conservatory of Music. Sofia is a Tri-M Music Honor Society member and sings in her school’s Masterworks Choir. She has placed third in the alto II category at the 2019 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association
(PMEA) Regional Choral Festival. She plans to attend West Chester University in the fall to pursue a dual degree in voice performance and music education. Frankie, who has participated in the 2018 PMEA District and Regional Choral Festivals, also plays flute, piccolo, tuba, French horn and trombone for the school’s marching and concert bands. He performed in high school musicals, playing the role of a mission band singer in “Guys and Dolls” and Mr. Banks in “Mary Poppins.” Frankie will attend the University of Delaware in the fall to study music and mathematics and will be a member of the Marching Blue Hens. Elana studies voice in Russell’s studio as well. Her past roles at local theaters and at school have included Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes,” Maria in “The Sound of Music,” Mayzie LaBird in “Seussical,” Dorothy Brown in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and Hedy LaRue in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Elana plans to attend college to study musical theater. Sue Sutter, event chair,
explained that students are required to apply for the competition in advance and provide a reference from a vocal coach or high school choral teacher. On the day of the competition, students are welcome to use an accompanist provided by the choral society or bring one of their own. “They sing one compulsory piece, so everyone sings the same piece in their vocal key,” explained Sutter. “They bring one classical number of their choice and one musical theater piece of their choice, and they sing to a panel of three judges.” This year, the competition was adjudicated by Courtney Capriotti, Teresa Moyer and Tom Sitzler. “At the end of the auditions, our judges do the tallies and then I notify the first-place winner and two runnersup,” said Sutter, noting choral members also attend the competition to escort students to the rehearsal rooms and turn music pages, among other duties. Sophia will receive $1,000, a certificate of achievement and an award plaque. The runners-up will receive $500 each and a certificate of merit. The awards will be presented at Chester County Choral
Society’s spring concert, led by Gary P. Garletts. The concert, themed “Favorite Opera Choruses,” will be held on Sunday, April 28, at 3:30 p.m. at Church of the Good Samaritan, 212 W. Lancaster Ave., Paoli. The late Honorable Charles B. Smith, who passed away in September 2018, sponsored the vocal competition and provided the scholarship money. “This year, we are dedicating the spring concert to Charlie Smith, our benefactor who has sponsored the scholarship since 2010,” Sutter said, noting that Smith was a baritone who sang at the Church of the Good Samaritan. “He felt that encouraging young singers was a good thing to do.” All three finalists will perform at the concert. “The runners-up will sing one (number) of their choice, and the winner will sing both of her audition pieces,” Sutter noted. MOPS Auction Will Support North Star Initiative By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Memberships to local attractions, restaurant gift certificates, photography packages, massage sessions, and house-cleaning services are among the items the coordinators of the annual Faith Reformed MOPS auction are hoping to receive from donors. “We’re trying to appeal to busy moms,” explained co-coordinator Hillary Prickett. “I would bid on (house-cleaning services) in 2 seconds. It’s my least-favorite chore.” The auction will be held during the MOPS group’s usual meeting time on Friday, April 5, starting at 9 a.m. at Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church (FRPC), 611 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. While meetings typically end at 11 a.m., this special event is expected to continue until 11:30 a.m. A silent auction will open at 9 a.m., and a live auction will start a half-hour later. Donations already received for the auction include several baby quilts, home decor, a date-night meal prepared by a personal chef, child care, collections of children’s books, gift baskets, hair products, fair-trade jewelry, handbags, a photography package, restaurant and coffee shop gift cards, and even a year’s dues for MOPS membership. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment for auction purchases. All of the proceeds will go to North Star Initiative, which operates the Harbor Restoration Program, a trauma-informed, strength-based

Following a needs assessment, an individualized care plan is created for each client that may include life skills classes, access to trauma therapy and support, and planning and tools for safe, healthy, independent living. This is the second year that Faith Reformed MOPS has supported North Star through its auction. The 2018 auction generated $2,951, and the coordinators hope to exceed that this year. “Last year, we chose North Star Initiative because MOPS International’s theme was ‘Free Indeed,’” Prickett said. “Helping women come out of sex trafficking was (a)

Volunteer Of The Year Announced The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania recently announced William Cole as Volunteer of the Year for 2019. Cole was selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. An eight-year member of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, he originally picked up a volunteer application while he was visiting the museum. With railroading as his hobby, Cole recalled that it seemed a perfect fit. Cole reveals that he has been a model railroader since age 5 when he received a Lionel train for Christmas, and he has had layouts in both O gauge and HO gauge. He currently has a four-by-eight-foot
O-scale layout that he maintains in his home. He describes it as electronics-heavy and automated for the 21st century. Cole also previously enjoyed building computers in the devices’ early days. Cole generally volunteers in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania archives one day a week, scanning and cataloging photo collections and preparing documents and photos for sale. He also works one day a week on the Pennsylvania Landscapes operating HO model train layout in Stewart Junction railway education center, rewiring and maintaining the layout and installing DCC decoders in locomotives. Cole will be formally recognized as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Volunteer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Historical and
Museum Commission at a ceremony in Harrisburg on Saturday, April 27. He will also be honored during the museum’s annual Members Day banquet at The Willows at Historic Strasburg on Saturday, Sept. 28. Individuals who would like to learn about the museum’s volunteer opportunities are invited to contact volunteer/program
coordinator Elizabeth Myers at 717-687-8628. For more details, readers may visit www.rrmuseumpa.org.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition - March 27, 2019 - 11
PVIS To Present “High School Musical” When director Alicia Trescavage chose “High School Musical” for this year’s Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) spring show, she was thinking of giving her students wide-ranging theater experience. “We did ‘The Addams Family’ last year, which was very dark,” recalled Trescavage. “I wanted to keep it interesting and give the students some variety.” The plot of “High School Musical” focuses on two teenagers - Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez - who have never tried out to be in a show before. Kianna Winey will play Gabriella, a shy, geeky math whiz, opposite Joel Peifer as Troy, a basketball star, in the PVIS production of the show, which will be performed in the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) auditorium, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers. Shows will be held on Friday, March 29, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 30, at 2 and 7 p.m. The story opens with Troy and Gabriella
meeting at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. Both decide to try out for parts in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. At this point, Sharpay Evans, who will be played by Ruthie LaCorte and Olivia Ross in alternate performances, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, played by Nick Ammon, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. The show boasts 10 songs, a few of which will involve the full cast of up to 45 students. Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” along with “We’re All in This Together.” Trescavage noted that the students in the cast are familiar with the material. “The (students) know it even though most of them weren’t born when it came out,” said
Trescavage. Although it is helpful to be working with students who already know much of the material, Trescavage, who is being assisted by Mindy Lapp, noted that is not necessarily advantage. “Teaching the harmony to songs they already know is a challenge for me,” admitted Trescavage. Trescavage noted that the show is heavily choreographed, but PVHS junior Megan Arment, who is a cheerleader, is working with the boys on the basketball scenes and with the girls on the cheerleading choreography. “She is doing a fantastic job,” said Trescavage. Costuming the show is a fun aspect of the production, according to Trescavage, who has enlisted Jennifer Schmitt as costumer. Old Braves uniforms will be recycled for use by the basketball players in the show, with the word “Braves” changed to “Wildcats.” Trescavage has also reached out to parents of student actors for help with costumes. “We have moms who know how to make the cheerleading bows and can get pom-poms,” said Trescavage. Trescavage pointed out that the show will be the acting debut for many of the students
taking part, but she added that they are showing a great deal of energy and enthusiasm. “It takes a lot of courage,” she noted, adding that when rehearsals move to PVHS, she will see a change in the students. “When we move to the big stage … it gets real,” she said. “They realize they will be in front of an audience doing this, and they encourage and support each other, which is wonderful.” While all generations should be able to relate to the message of “High School Musical,” which Trescavage said is to “be yourself and not be afraid to be judged for doing what you love,” the story resonates strongly with students in middle and high school. “This is a time where you find yourself and your place,” said Trescavage. “(Students) may be hesitant to do certain things because they are afraid of what other people will say or think, but it’s an opportunity to learn some resilience and rise above that and work on confidence.” Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students and seniors. Children age 4 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased at www.pequeavalley.org or at the door.

Showcasing A World Of Quilts 2019 marks the 10th year that the American Quilter’s Society (AQS) has hosted a QuiltWeek Show in Lancaster. The event will be held from Wednesday, March 27, to Saturday, March 30, at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. “More than 15,000 people will meet in Lancaster, one of the oldest inland towns in the United States, to enjoy a four-day quilting and fiber arts showcase event,” said AQS executive show director Bonnie Browning. “Each QuiltWeek Show is about bringing quilters together to share ideas and inspiration, and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Lancaster.” AQS QuiltWeek 2019 includes six events across the country, with its second show of the year in Lancaster. Each show offers a variety of programming, including special exhibitions, workshops by renowned instructors, contests, and a merchant mall with the latest
machines, fabrics, and tools for quilters of every skill level. In addition to more than 460 quilts on display, $54,000 in prizes will be awarded during the fourday event in Lancaster. AQS-certified quilt appraisers will also be on hand to appraise new and vintage quilts for insurance documentation, sale, or donation purposes. Evening events will include “Creativity and Quilt Play: An Evening With Victoria Findlay Wolfe,” “Success With Scrap Quilts: An Evening With Deb Tucker,” and the famous All-Star Review, featuring instructors sharing techniques and comaraderie. A total of 11 exhibitions will be held over the show’s four days. For the full list of exhibitions, readers may visit https://bit.ly/2HKhxeE. A sampling includes the following: The “35 Years of AQS Anniversary Showcase” will feature 15 of the previous Best of Show winning quilts at AQS QuiltWeek Shows, which are on loan from the permanent National
Quilt Museum collection. In addition, this exhibit will also include a collection of AQS show pins, a T-shirt quilt by Molinda Lauxmiller featuring shirts from previous AQS QuiltWeek shows, and other AQS memorabilia from the past 35 years. Minnesota is the home of Cherrywood and the late musician Prince, and those have been combined in “The Prince Cherrywood Challenge,” with Prince-inspired pieces created with Cherrywood hand-dyed fabric. The “50 State Salute” exhibit will feature patriotic-themed quilts intended for the Quilts of Valor Foundation, which will distribute them to veterans and military members touched by war. The quilts are meant to inspire all levels of quiltmakers and to showcase the many possibilities for expressing gratitude to those who have served in the military through quilts. Novel depictions of famous Lone Star quilt patterns will be

showcased in “Singular Stars: Lone Star Quilts From Judy Martin.” In these quilts, Martin explores strippieced Lone Stars, taking them in new directions with the addition of undulating curves, gradations of color, starburst elements, satellite stars, strip-pieced diamond borders, and other design elements. Adding an international flavor to the show, the 14th Quilt Nihon Exhibition will be displayed in Lancaster. Organized by Japan Handicraft Instructors’ Association, the largest organization of handcraft instructors in Japan, the Quilt Nihon Exhibition is one of the most prestigious international quilt contests in that country. Of the 256 entries from 11 countries in two categories - innovative traditional quilt and contemporary quilt - 82 award-winning quilts were selected for the traveling exhibition. There is a cost to attend the QuiltWeek Show, and purchasing tickets in advance is encouraged. To buy tickets or learn more about the event, readers may visit www.quiltweek.com.
