SPRING REVIVAL
Atglen Missionary Baptist Church, Main and Dallas streets, Atglen, will hold a spring revival on Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, at 6 p.m. There will also be a program on April 14 at 11 a.m. A meal will be served at 4:30 p.m. on April 13. Inviting the community to the grand opening of the World Mission Café at Houston Run Center on April 18 are Gap Community Church (GCC) members, including (from left) media producer Nate Hoskins, GCC lead pastor Cody Hall, café administrator Alli Zimmerman, culture and events coordinator Monique Moreno and volunteer Elizabeth Hingle.

The Chester County Orphans’ Court is currently seeking volunteers willing to serve as its “eyes and ears” by visiting residents under guardianship throughout the county. Those interested in becoming part of the program are invited to attend a training session that will be held on Wednesday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 W. Market St., West Chester, in Suite 3300A. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT
The Chester County 4-H program is looking for several volunteers to help engage youths in STEM education with an emphasis on robotics and computer sciences. Volunteers would work directly with youths on short-term projects or in ongoing 4-H clubs, and volunteer training will be provided. To find out more, contact Toni Stuetz, extension 4-H educator, at tstuetz@psu.edu or 610-696-3500.
The grand opening of the World Mission Café, located in the Houston Run Center, has been set for Thursday, April 18. The café is a nonprofit organization serving under the umbrella of Gap Community Church (GCC), with all proceeds going to local and global missions. The café is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During the grand opening, the café’s full menu will be unveiled. It will include freshly made panini sandwiches and soups, as well as salads, bagels, grab-and-go items, specialty beverages and coffee. There will be suggested donation amounts for each menu item, but diners are free to pay the amount they choose. According to GCC lead pastor Cody Hall, the interaction between staff and visitors is just as important as raising
funds for missions. “The food and the drinks accent but do not drive what we do here as an organization. It’s a culture-driven organization,” Hall said. “We want to create a space and place where people can come in and explore what missions means and what discipleship means.” Community members are invited to stop in for a cup of coffee or a light meal and take time to talk to the staff about missions or any aspect of their own relationship to God. “I love the vision of it. I love that it is not solely about making a profit - it’s about people, encountering them where they are and talking to them,” said GCC culture and event coordinator Monique Moreno. “We can meet them where they are. I ask them if they need prayer for anything. They’re usually surprised, but they’re grateful. That’s what I like about this place. It’s just a very open atmosphere.”

Good Samaritan Services (GSS) is a Chester County- and Lancaster Countybased organization that provides emergency shelter and transitional and permanent housing for those experiencing homelessness. To honor the 10th anniversary of CEO Nate Hoffer’s leadership at Good Samaritan Services (GSS), GSS board and staff have launched a campaign to fund permanent housing rental assistance for the organization’s Bridge of Hope @ GSS program. Through the “It’s Good to Be Home!” campaign, GSS is seeking businesses, churches, schools, community groups and individuals to make donations or set up fundraising teams to help avert eviction and homelessness for single women with children in Chester and Lancaster counties. When Hoffer was appointed as leader of GSS 10 years ago, the organization had three houses and served approximately 15 men in emergency shelter and transitional housing in a year. Now, GSS serves more than 185 men, women and children every year, working across the spectrum of needs, from emergency shelter and transitional housing to longterm affordable housing and permanent housing, with additional programs like matched savings, microfinance, mentoring and job training. To find out more about the campaign, to donate or to raise funds through the crowdsourced site Everyday Hero, readers may visit www.goodsamservices.org/good -to-be-home.

WFCS To Stage “Godspell Jr.” West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS), 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, and the middle school cast invite the community to attend the upcoming musical “Godspell Jr.” on Tuesday, April 9, at 1 and 7 p.m. Based on the Gospel of Matthew, the musical uses major episodes in the Bible - including the baptism of Jesus, the Last Supper, and His arrest and crucifixion - to portray the themes of compassion, love, forgiveness, and sacrifice. A group of
disciples helps Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques, and comedy. The show draws on various theatrical traditions and musical styles, including pantomime, charades, acrobatics, vaudeville, folk, and rock, to create a unique take on the Gospel story. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted. For more information, readers may call the school at 610-593-5011.

This year’s overall winning club for the window display contest was the Tri-Community 4-H Dairy Club. The display exhibited happenings with the club, as well as the entire 4-H program. It was accompanied by three cow figures sitting on straw bales. The second overall winning club was Sparks 4-H Club. Its display highlighted the club’s activities and its members through photos of a variety of hands-on projects. The contest was open to any club in the Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program within Chester County, and it promoted the 4-H program and its clubs’ activities. The displays were evaluated in the following categories: overall design, attractiveness and creativity, and promotion of the 4-H program. As a culmination to Pennsylvania 4-H Week, the annual Spring Tractor Supply Company Paper Clover campaign will run through Sunday, April 7. All Chester County Tractor Supply customers can participate in the campaign by purchasing paper clovers at the register when checking out. The funds raised will help fund scholarships for individual Chester County 4-H members attending 4-H camps and leadership conferences. The café area had been through several identities prior to becoming the World Mission Café. GCC is located at 835 Houston Run Drive, Gap, and now the restaurant space is used on Sunday mornings as a gathering space and a spot where people can watch the Sunday service at 10 a.m. if they choose not to join the congregation in the main room. The idea for using the space as a café came through Hall’s son Colby. “He had a significant encounter with God that literally saved his life. Out of that came this new person. Out of that came this heart in him to create a space so church was not just a Sunday morning event,” Hall said. “The idea is that we have to be the

Locally, members of the American Legion Charles F. Moran Post 475, which meets at Freedom Village at Brandywine in Coatesville, celebrated the anniversary during the post’s monthly meeting on March 25. In addition to the regular business meeting and luncheon, attendees enjoyed a 100th anniversary cake that was served during the event. Following opening ceremonies, which included a prayer by chaplain Andrea Crudden and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, Glenn Gilbert, post commander, provided the keynote speech, titled “To Strengthen a Nation: The American Legion at 100.” In his speech, Gilbert explained that the American Legion founders had the idea for the organization while returning to the United States after serving in the American Expeditionary Forces in Paris. “They had time to think about what they would do after discharge from service in support of their wounded comrades, to honor the fallen, to care for the surviving spouses and orphans, and to protect the democracy they pledged their lives to defend,” he stated. “These troops envisioned a different kind of veterans association. It would be like none before it, nor any that would follow.” With a motto of “Still Serving America,” the American Legion adopted four principles that were established when the organization was formed: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youths. Among the Legion’s accomplishments, the organization served an important role in the creation of the U.S. Veterans Bureau in 1921, the Veterans Administration in 1930 and the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1989. The Legion also helped pass the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, known as the GI Bill of Rights. For youths, the American Legion developed a national youth baseball program. Additionally, the organization provides aid to those who have suffered from natural disasters, such as floods and tornadoes, through its National Emergency Fund. Gilbert added that one of the main objectives of the veterans organization is to remind others of the sacrifices of fallen service members. He pointed out that each meeting of the post includes a “missing man” table. “It is a physical symbol of the thousands of American POWs and

the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the Gulf War, as well as those currently serving in the War on Terror. Those who join are asked to pay a yearly membership fee. Post members take part in various activities. They provide an honor guard at area parades, attend the funerals of veterans, take part in Veterans Day ceremonies, and replace the American flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day. For more information about the American Legion, including details on membership, readers may contact adjutant Chuck Wimer at post475amlegion@gmail.com or 484-645-2369.

6 - COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition - April 3, 2019
Volunteers from pg 1 Diane Mulhearn, Orphans’ Court administrator, explained that as part of the legal process, the court appoints guardians for individuals who are unable to manage their financial resources or meet essential requirements for physical health and safety. “These individuals cannot make decisions about their daily lives - where they live, medical decisions, and financial decisions due to serious physical or intellectual disabilities,” Mulhearn stated. “They need an advocate to care for them because they are no longer capable of caring for themselves.” The individuals under guardianship might be someone with Alzheimer’s disease, an adult who has sustained a brain injury, or an individual with physical or intellectual disabilities who has attained the majority age of 18. A guardian can be a family member, a friend, or a representative of professional agency According to the Hon. Katherine B.L. Platt, an administrative judge with the Orphans’ Court, the volume of open guardianships makes it impossible for the Orphans’ Court judges to stay involved in each of the 750 cases that are open in the Chester County courts. This is where the
volunteers come into play, serving as an extension of the court system by visiting those under guardianship. “This program is a godsend to the people we serve and to the court,” Platt stated. In addition to volunteer visitors, the court is in need of auditors who review annual financial reports, as well researchers, who create files for the volunteers that contain information about the guardian and the person under guardianship, including a doctor’s report. The file is designed to familiarize the volunteers with the person they will visit. “That is very helpful for us volunteers to have,” said volunteer James Godbold of Downingtown, who retired from a career as a statistician in the field of medical research and is currently teaching at West Chester University. “It’s also a great screening tool. Some people are more comfortable with (visiting) autistic individuals or those with Alzheimer’s.” Volunteer Rebecca Stillman of Kennett Square, who was trained as a dental technician in the U.S. Navy, where she served for 15 years, enjoys visiting senior citizens. “For seven years, I worked with a corporation where we visited nursing

Their time is their own,” said Mulhearn. “Why this program is so successful is because it is so flexible.” Volunteers are asked to report any issues they might witness during the annual visit, which lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. A Marionette Passion Play will be performed on Saturday, April 20, at 1:45 and 5 p.m. in a Christian coffeehouse atmosphere located at the Holy Land Christian Theater in Cackleberry Farm Antique Mall, 3375-2 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. Joe Dunfee is the new steward and performer of the play. The show covers the time from Jesus being brought before Pilate to the resurrection. It will run for an hour, including a 15-minute intermission. The large, professional-level marionette production features 3-foot-tall marionettes, professional voice actors, and orchestration on recording. Volunteer performers are utilized. The performance is not geared toward young children; third grade is the lowest recommended age limit, provided the children, accompanied by their parents, can sit quietly throughout the performance. The idea for the show was conceived in 1986 by Kenneth Kleinfelter, who ministered as “Captain Ken” in his marionette ministry based in Renovo, and his puppeteer friend Robert Knechtel, who was an accomplished marionette maker and performer, having been on television in the Buffalo, N.Y., area throughout the 1950s and ’60s. Knechtel passed away a decade ago, and Kleinfelter is unable to perform. His family decided to give the Marionette Passion Play to Dunfee of Gordonville. With the show in its new home, Dunfee has assembled a volunteer team and is
