Community Wishes Happy 100th Birthday To Dorothy Denson BY FRANCINE FULTON
The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) will host its first virtual 5K, Run for Good, from Saturday, April 24, through Saturday, May 1. All are invited to register individually or as a team at www.ymcagbw.org/runforgood5k. According to event organizers, each participant can choose the time and place to run or walk the 5K during the week, whether it be on a treadmill, at his or her local YMCA branch or on a neighborhood street or trail. Finishers will also be entered in a drawing to win daily prizes. See Virtual 5K pg 6
The community turned out on March 28 to wish a happy 100th birthday to Dorothy Denson, who was born on March 29, 1921, and has lived in Parkesburg for more than 70 years. A drive-by parade held in her honor was led by two vehicles from the Parkesburg Police Department, followed by nearly 20 cars full of well-wishers, many of whom stopped by to hand over flowers, balloons, cards and gifts. The parade also featured fire and rescue Dorothy Denson
vehicles from Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD), which sounded their sirens as they passed. Because of the rainy weather, Dorothy watched the parade pass by from her front porch of her house, where she resides with her daughter. Her family members who joined her went out to the street to receive the cards and gifts. Neighbors also came out of their homes to greet Dorothy and watch the parade. The parade was arranged as a surprise for Dorothy by her grandson, Andre Anderson, who is the activities coordinator at The Parkesburg

community aware of IMPACT Church and its offerings. “If you’ve been thinking about checking out IMPACT Church, there’s no better day than (April 11) for the kids to really have a fun time,” Beka said. “Plus, parents will be encouraged with the new message series on relationships in the adult gathering.” IMPACT Church is located at 101 E. First Ave., Parkesburg. Mike has been leading IMPACT Church, formerly known as Church of the Open Bible, since June of 2020. To learn more about the safety procedures and to preregister children for IMPACT Kids, visit www.impactpa.church/kids. Registering children will allow the church to have enough stuffed animals to give out. Those interested in attending a service at IMPACT Church should visit www.impactpa.church and choose “Plan a Visit.” A gift bag will be given to those who attend the church for the first time. The church’s weekly in-person gatherings are held at 10 a.m. on Sundays, and they are also livestreamed at www.facebook.com /impactchurchparkesburg. Those who attend in person will be asked to wear a mask until they are seated in the gathering area.

As part of National Pet Day on Sunday, April 11, children at IMPACT Church in Parkesburg will celebrate Adopt a Plushy Pet Sunday. During the event, children from the community and their friends will be able to choose a new plush pet, a collar and leash and a cardboard pet house that they can color. “We’ll even have adoption certificates to make it official,” said Beka Bailey, IMPACT Kids director. The Adopt a Plushy Pet activity will take place during IMPACT Kids, which meets during the 10 a.m. adult gathering at IMPACT Church. IMPACT Kids is open to children from age 6 weeks to fourth grade. On a typical Sunday, youngsters enjoy music, games, crafts and a lesson from the Bible. On April 11, IMPACT Kids will include all of the usual activities plus the fun adoption party. The church has a secure check-in and checkout system established for parents who drop off their children while they are in the worship service. Children are divided into age groups with age-appropriate activities. Rise is for children ages 6 weeks to 35 months; Shine is for children ages 3 to 5. Launch is for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. “In our nursery we have a crawler side and a baby side. Kindergarten through fourth grade is in another area,” explained pastor Mike Bailey. According to Beka, the top priorities at IMPACT Kids include creating an environment where parents feel safe bringing their children and helping equip parents to be the spiritual leaders in their homes. All the volunteers are trained and vetted and want to help children connect with each other and with God. The pets that will be given out to children on April 11 were purchased by the church. “We have enough pets from Kohl’s Cares plush animal collection to create our own plushy pet zoo,” Beka noted. The idea to hold the event for children is to make more people in the
team of volunteers travels to Peru each summer to provide physical and spiritual support to the pastor and his congregation; however, 2020 was different. Due to travel restrictions, MOPC sent funds, medical supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to the nursing staff and medical facilities in Iquitos, the major Peruvian city where past mission teams have stayed during their journeys to and from Tamshiyacu. Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. Today the renovated building offers ample and much needed space to enable Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies to keep up with production of their delicious pies that make a great home cooked meal that anyone can appreciate. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. There will be the opportunity to register to win prizes and product samples to taste and enjoy. The retail store hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.

Lasagna Love from pg 1 Those who would like to cook lasagnas are also invited to register at the website. “I have some volunteers who sign up just for one time. Some people sign up for once a month,” Engle noted. “The most active person I have (makes) five lasagnas a week.” She noted that it is important that the lasagnas be homemade and not storebought. “Rhiannon, the founder, feels very strongly that (homemade food) is the ‘love’ part of Lasagna Love. It’s the kindness of making something for a neighbor or a stranger,” Engle shared. “It’s like your neighbor made you dinner.” The lasagna is delivered at a mutually convenient time, and noncontact deliveries are encouraged. “Some volunteers knock on the door and wait until the recipient comes and takes the food or wait in the car to make sure it gets picked up,” Engle noted.
On a week when there are not a lot of requests, volunteers are kept busy. They recently delivered 60 loaf-size lasagnas to senior residents at Luther House in West Grove. “(The seniors) were excited about it, and the volunteers were excited to be able to have that opportunity,” Engle reported. Engle emphasized that lasagnas are not just for low-income recipients. “Part of the mission statement is that there are different kinds of needs,” she stated. “We are not just serving people in need financially. We deliver to people who are not working or (who are) working multiple jobs or work from home and homeschool their kids. It’s only one meal and it won’t change the world for the family, but it will change their world for that one day.” For more information, visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/WeAre LasagnaLove.
“No one made it to Peru last year,” noted Daniel Henry, MOPC mission team leader. “The airport which we land at in the Amazon was closed most if not all of last summer.” MOPC began its Peru mission in 2006 in conjunction with Daniel’s brother, Dave Henry, who serves as the pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City, Mo. Together, the two churches raised funds to build a sister church in Tamshiyacu in 2008. Church members from both Pennsylvania and Missouri travel to Peru every year and stay for one to two weeks. While there, they lead Bible school and work on construction projects at the church and within the village. “We strive to share the Gospel and the love of Jesus to the folks in this region of the Amazon,” said Daniel. Over the years, the mission teams have completed several projects in Peru, such as doing maintenance on the church, building a playground for special needs children, installing a running water system for the church, and supplying malaria nets and parasite medicines.
To raise funds for its Peru mission, MOPC held its annual Nuts ‘N’ Bolts consignment sale on Jan. 9. MOPC will host a yard sale on Saturday, April 17, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to continue fundraising for its Peru mission. The event will be indoors, and there will be over 30 tables of items for sale, including toys, household items, tools, small appliances, clothes, and much more. Food will also be available for purchase. “We have been holding the annual yard sale for over 25 years,” said Daniel. “We invite folks to donate items or they can rent their own outside space.” MOPC will celebrate its 300th anniversary in 2027. Currently, the church has over 100 active members with attendance averaging about 50. MOPC holds in-person worship services every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. “We practice social distancing and recommend masks,” said Daniel. “All has gone well.” For more information about the yard sale, including to rent a space, call MOPC at 717-786-3402 or Daniel at 717-381-9947.

organization serving all of Chester County, provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-sufficiency. In operation since 1979, Chester County OIC helps more than 800 adults per year. “Our program is based at the Chester County Library in Exton, with whom we have a long partnership,” noted Debbie Rikess, Adult Tutoring Program coordinator. She noted that because of the pandemic, most tutor pairs are working virtually right now via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp and other platforms. As the weather turns warmer, she anticipates that some pairs will meet outdoors. “We recently had three new tutors join our program. Cindy is working with Sofia, who is from Mexico. Her goal is to improve her English so that she can get a better job,” noted Rikess. “Theresa is working with a young woman named Susan on earning her GED (diploma). Susan recently passed one of the four sections, and they are now working on the science unit.” The third new tutor is Kathy, who started working with Paula at the beginning of February. “Paula is from Brazil, where she worked as a pharmacist,” Rikess said. “She would like to improve her English so that she can get her certification here as well as obtain citizenship.” “We are very grateful to have these wonderful volunteers in our program,” Rikess added. The Adult Tutoring Program tutor training is offered online by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Once the training is complete, volunteers are matched with a student of their choosing based on level, time and the student’s goals. Tutors are given access to many free online resources so they can create a lesson plan. In addition to receiving assistance with passing the GED tests, students are also preparing for the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) for those interested in nursing and the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), which measures the English language ability of non-native speakers who want to enroll in Englishspeaking universities. Prospective volunteer tutors, as well as students interested in enrolling in the program, are asked to contact Rikess at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-344-4013. More information about the program is available at www.CCOIC.org.

Virtual 5K from pg 1 Runners and walkers do not need to be a member of the YMCA to participate. “What you would do is submit your time, (which is) how long it takes you to run or walk your 5K at one time any day that week,” explained Kim Cavallero, YGBW vice president of marketing and communications. “The idea is to do a full 5K and then submit your time. We are going on the honor system.” During the week, participants are asked to post photos on Facebook and other outlets with the hashtag #RunForGoodYGBW. “We are hoping people will share on social media. We want to celebrate with everybody as they complete their 5K,” said Cavallero. “It’s a big accomplishment.” Special commemorative Run for Good T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tshirts can be picked up on Healthy Kids Day, set this year for April 24, or
at a local branch after that date. Healthy Kids Day is an annual YGBW event, but it was canceled last year because of the pandemic. “We are going to hold it this year at four of our branches,” noted Cavallaro. “It’s essentially an event to encourage parents to keep children active all summer long. We usually have moon bounces, police come and give motivational talks and there are group exercise classes. It’s a free event.” She added that details for Health Kids Day are still being finalized. “It’s a little different this year, so it will be taking them longer to figure out what activities to have and do safely,” Cavallero noted. All proceeds from the Run for Good will benefit YGBW’s annual “CAMPaign,” which is designed to ensure that every child in the community has the opportunity to attend YGBW’s summer camp program. Financial
assistance is provided to ensure no one is ever turned away from the Y due to an inability to pay. YGBW is working to raise at least $21,000 from the Run for Good, with additional fundraising efforts planned in support of its “CAMP-aign.” “We are hoping for 300 runners or walk- The YMCA of Greater Brandywine will host its first virtual 5K, Run ers,” said Cavallero, for Good, from April 24 to May 1. adding that YMCA Participants may run or walk a 5K branches are seeing an at a location convenient to them. increase of activity by members. “We are realLionville Community YMCA, Octorly excited to see a change and to be ara YMCA Program Center, Oscar planning events. A drive-by parade was held in Parkesburg on March 28 for Dorothy Denson, who turned 100 years old on March 29.
POINT youth center. Youths at The POINT made a giant birthday card for Dorothy, and Larry Constable, one of the founders of the youth center, stopped by Dorothy’s home to lead a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Dorothy was married to Paul Richard Denson, who passed away in 1988. Dorothy and Paul have four children, two boys and two girls; 10 grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. According to Liesl Denson, Dorothy’s granddaughter, Dorothy and Paul were married in Atglen on Aug. 8, 1942. “Grandma always told me about her wedding day,” Liesl shared. “She said that it rained all day and the (church) flooded and the cake floated out of the church and down the hill.” Dorothy, who was born in Atglen, is the oldest of eight children and the last to survive. During her lifetime, she fostered more

Schempp Named To Dean’s List Samuel Schempp of Parkesburg was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2020 semester at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. Schempp is majoring in agricultural systems technology. Students named to the dean’s list must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.
Also available is Willow, a 7-month-old neutered male who is up to date on vaccines. “He has been in foster care since he was small. He is really in need of a forever home,” said Davis. Those interested in adopting Teddy or Willow must complete an application and provide personal and veterinarian references. Those who adopt a pet are asked to make a suggested donation. “I have an application (through) Angie’s Stray Foundation. (Ruth) named the rescue in honor of her late dog, Angie,” Davis noted. The Facebook page also features other animals offered for adoption through the Brandywine Valley SPCA, among other rescue groups. “I try to help network,” noted Davis. “You want to see (the pets) do well.” Davis said that because of COVID-19, the kitten population has increased because some spay and neuter programs ceased operations during the pandemic. “Last year was so bad. I had (so many foster) kittens,” she shared. “I just adopted out my last kitten from last season. I had her (since) September and was super attached, but I have my own cats and there are always more cats to foster.” For more information and to view available pets, search for “Lifesaving Pet Rescue Chester County PA” on Facebook. Those interested in adopting Teddy, Willow or other cats and kittens can contact Davis through the Facebook page.

Atglen Boy Scouts Hold Court Of Honor BY FRANCINE FULTON
Boy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen, composed of boys who reside in the Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts, held its spring Court of Honor on March 8, during which Scouts were recognized for their achievements. The ceremony was held in the outdoor pavilion behind the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen, where the troop meets. During the Court of Honor, 18 Scouts were awarded a total of 27 merit badges. Through the merit badge program, Scouts have the opportunity to learn about various sports, crafts, trades and more. The merit badges awarded at the recent Court of Honor include Animation, Coin Collecting, Collections, Hiking, Leatherwork, Robotics, Public Speaking and Rifle Shooting. In addition, a total of 14 rank advancements were presented, including eight Scouts who advanced to the rank of Tenderfoot, two who advanced to the Second Class rank, one who advanced to First Class and three who advanced to Life Scout. According to Scouts BSA, there are seven ranks - Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle - and the ranks must be earned in sequence. “There are requirements for each rank,” explained Christine Zink, a member of the troop’s parent committee. “Once they earn the Life rank, they are Scouts for life.” Also during the Court of Honor, Noah Zink was presented the troop’s Mitch King Award for Scouting. King retired from the Scoutmaster position in 2012 after serving in that role for 33 years. In honor of his longtime service to Scouting and to further recognize

youths who share that enthusiasm for the Scouting program, the award was created in 2013. The award is presented to the Scout who has best exemplified the aspects of the Scout Oath and Scout Law over the previous year. Nominations are presented to the Scoutmaster from other adult leaders. The winner is determined by the current Scoutmaster and King, who still remains an active part of the troop as an assistant Scoutmaster and treasurer. Boy Scout Troop 20 meets at Penningtonville Presbyterian Church, 406 Main St., Atglen, on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Boys ages 11 to 18 are welcome to join, and the troop welcomes visitors at its regular meetings. Zink reported that the troop remained active during 2020. Scouts met via Zoom and took part in onsite camping trips. Additionally, the Scouts kept up their Adopt-A-Highway cleanup commitment, and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard.

“We (may) still have restrictions because we don’t know what the summer looks like, but the boys have planned a full calendar,” said Zink. “We are planning to go back to Camp

In addition to remembering those that lost their lives, Maxwell gave credit to health care workers. “By the very nature of their professions, our doctors, our nurses, hospital staff, long-term care personnel and EMTs all understand and accept that sometimes their jobs go beyond diagnosis, treatment and care,” he said. Kichline concluded the ceremony, quoting a passage from the book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy: “‘What do we do when our hearts hurt?’ asked the boy. ‘We wrap them with friendship, shared tears and time (until) they wake hopeful and happy again.’” To view the entire memorial ceremony, visit www.facebook.com/Ches CoGovt and search for the post from March 27.
