Yard Sale Will Support Peruvian Mission Speaker To Address Change In Churches Parish Resource Center To Host McLaren

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

When Dan Henry’s brother, Dave, spoke at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church (MOPC) earlier this year, he stressed the importance of setting aside preconceived ideas when aiming to help people from other cultures. “ We don’t want to do things our way,” Dan said. “It is better to follow their directions.” Dan related that Dave, who is a Presbyterian pastor in Jefferson City, Mo., and the leader of annual trips to a sister church in Tamshiyacu, Peru, explained that point by using the example of a painting project in Peru. “Churches are always looking at (the question), ‘How do we continue to be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning?’” said Kate Good, executive director of the Parish Resource Center (PRC), 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The PRC works with 13 denominations to help answer questions like the one Good posed, and to that end, the organization will bring global activist and pastor Brian McLaren to Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, April 27, at 7 p.m. McLaren will speak on “The Changing Nature of the Christian Church.”

Dan Henry examines a birdhouse and step ladder that will be sold at a yard sale on April 20 at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, along with a set of skis and many other items. Proceeds from the event will support a mission trip to Peru in July.

Brian McLaren According to Good, McLaren was chosen to speak based on what he can offer to churches. “We try to (present) leaders who are nationally recognized leaders (in the area of) faith,” said Good. “(McLaren) brings an approach to church that people are hungry for.” Good added that in McLaren’s arsenal of ideas are new ways of imagining church and what the church of the See McLaren pg 2

millennial worshipper looks like, based in part on his experience as pastor of Cedar Ridge Community Church in Maryland, which was known for being innovative. McLaren is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He earned his Doctor of Divinity degree from Carey Theological College in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He also holds an honorary doctorate from Virginia Theological Seminary (Episcopal). In 1982, McLaren helped form Cedar Ridge Community Church, and in 1986, he became the church’s founding pastor. He served in that capacity until 2006. McLaren has been active in mentoring church planters and pastors. He speaks on a variety of topics including postmodern thought and culture. He has authored more than a dozen books, including “A New Kind of Christianity” and “Naked Spirituality.” Good noted that in her experience with area churches, members and leaders are always looking for inspiration. “(McLaren) looks at the big questions facing the church - things that hold people back from becoming members and participating in church,” Good said. McLaren is known for helping congregations look at those questions in new ways. “He also talks about innovation and awareness of others’ traditions and understandings and (at) how they connect to Christian faith,” said Good. Good pointed out that McLaren’s talk should be helpful to all members of a church. “Faith leaders are an important part of this conversation, but all congregations are made up of people who are trying to figure out why church attendance is (lower) on Sunday morning or how to attract more young families,” she said. “Churches are looking at how (to) continue to be the faith community that is relevant and important to the people who come and give time on Sunday morning.” Along with suggestions for church groups, Good believes McLaren has much to say about the individual faith experience. “(McLaren) talks about how to keep working at your own faith journey, which is an important question for any person of faith,” she stated. After speaking, McLaren will take time to connect with attendees. “There will be 15 to 20 minutes (for) questions and answers,”

noted Good. “(The question-and-answer period will give attendees) a chance to ask specific questions that have been weighing on their minds and hearts,” she said. Speakers at past PRC events have attracted up to 1,200 attendees. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to hear McLaren may visit www.parish resourcecenter.org or call 717-299-1113.

For more than two decades, the “Messiah” Sing-Along has been held in Lancaster County. It has always been and remains a drop-in event. “The people can come as they are,” said Clair Leaman, who had conducted a “Messiah” Sing-Along in Chester County for more than a decade before organizing the Lancaster version. “Just stop in. There are no rehearsals.” The 22nd annual “Messiah” Sing-Along will take place on Friday, April 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. No child care will be provided. Singers will begin arriving at 6:30 p.m. According to Leaman, about 150 singers from Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties and even out of state typically take part. Leaman organizes them by voice part. Audiences of as many as 600 have attended past events. The full “Messiah” by G.F. Handel is organized into three parts. The first part covers Christ’s birth and fulfillment of prophecy, and the second part focuses on suffering and death, while the third part concludes with triumph over sin and death. The Christmas program, which includes part one, is performed in Chester County in December. At Easter, the program begins with the overture and then includes all of parts two and three. Perhaps the most well-known segment of “Messiah” is the “Hallelujah” chorus in part two, where the audience is encouraged to stand and sing with the vocalists. Leaman noted that sign language interpretation of the presentation will be provided by Carol Stevens and Grace McConkie. “Originally, it was just Carol (interpreting),” recalled Leaman. “But then Grace became interested (in interpreting), and she studied with Carol.” Leaman added that sometimes the women interpret simultaneously and at

other times they take turns. Stevens serves as deaf ministry area coordinator for the Peninsula-Delaware of the United Methodist Church. She has 50 years of experience interpreting American Sign Language (ASL). McConkie is presently working toward her ASL teaching certification while attending Goldey-Beacom College. Westminster will be represented at this year’s sing-along by soprano Carolyn McLain in addition to Floyd Rawleigh Jr., who will be the “Hallelujah” chorus guest conductor, and Westminister retired organist Pat Bleecker, who will play. Returning soloists will include contralto Heidi Kurtz, tenor Timothy Bench, and bass Mark Moliterno. McLain has performed locally with Opera Lancaster and the Lemonade Concerts for Opera Lancaster. She has also taken part in the Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series at Highland Presbyterian Church and the Crown Concert Series at Church of the Apostles. McLain has served as soprano soloist for “Messiah” at Calvary Church, for “The Holy City” with the Franconia-Lancaster Choral Singers, and for the Festival of Carols at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. She also directs the Westminster Strings. “This will be McLain’s first time singing with us,” noted Leaman. Leaman encourages vocalists who wish to take part to practice using the “Learn and Practice Your Voice Part” link at www.messiah singalong.com. Music to use at the event

“The project lead dumped paint thinner into the paint bucket, and then he dumped in more. We asked why, and he said the paint had to be thinned or it would never dry in the high humidity. If it had been up to us, we would have just started painting,” Dan reported Dave as sharing. “Can you imagine kids running around and bumping into walls covered with wet paint?” Dan and his wife, Boni, began visiting the Presbyterian church in Tamshiyacu in 2006. Sometimes teams of a dozen or more people from MOPC have traveled there, and other times, it has been only Dan and Boni. No matter the size, the group typically joins with Dave’s parishioners and other folks he has recruited. Dan noted that when he and Boni first started going to the remote jungle village of Tamshiyacu, they were happy to help with construction projects. Age, however, has slowed them down, but that has actually been a blessing that has turned the traditional missions trip model on its head. “The team does pay some people to help (with construction). In some ways, we help them more by hiring local men to do the work,” Dan said. “We buy materials locally too. By buying in the village, it helps them out.” On earlier trips, MOPC members collected flip-flops and other items to distribute to people in need in Tamshiyacu, but they have since opted to purchase those items in the village, benefiting the local economy. Additionally, the teams buy anti-parasite medication in a Peruvian city for distribution to residents in and around Tamshiyacu. Along with meeting folks’ physical needs, the mission teams have aimed to meet spiritual needs as well. Dave has mentored the church’s pastors, and typically, the groups host Bible schools for children during their visits. “We usually start with about 50 children, but by the end of the week, it’s popular, and we have several hundred. It’s organized chaos, but they love it,” Dan said. The next trip to Tamshiyacu is set for Friday, July 5, to Saturday, July 13. Dan and Boni will be traveling with a group from Jefferson City. They plan to host a Bible school, do some touchups on the church building, and renovate a house for the parents of the church’s current pastor, Jhony.

108th Birthday from pg 1 Surrounded by friends and family, Gertrude Faillaci was recently recognized on her 108th birthday at Barclay Friends Senior Living in West Chester. Also in attendance were state Sen. Andy Dinniman and West Chester Mayor Diane Herrin. Faillaci received a special Senate citation. Faillaci’s daughter, Gloria Bilunas, said her mother credits her longevity with a simple approach to healthy living, including a strong work ethic and an optimistic outlook on life. Faillaci, originally of Westchester County, N.Y., has lived through 17 presidents and raised a family of two children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Pictured on front:

ask tutors to do training online, which is about four hours, and then they meet with their students, but they can choose a student before the training,” Rikess said. “They can choose based on student goals, meeting time and place.” She noted that some students’ cultures require females to have a same-gender tutor. Rikess said that tutors are of various ages and come from different backgrounds, including retired folks as well as college students who are in a master’s degree program. “(Tutors can also be) students who have a bachelor’s degree and are trying to earn their teacher’s certificates,” Rikess noted. “It’s good teaching experience.” For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor, readers may contact Rikess at drikess@cc-oic.org or 610-2802618. and grateful to PAACE for awarding him this well-deserved and prestigious award.” Rikess noted that Chester County OIC is always in need of volunteers willing to help individuals with their English language skills through its adult tutoring program. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Rikess, there is a current waiting list of 20 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors. “Most of the need is for ESL students, but we also have GED students as well,” she noted. Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. She said that most student/tutor pairs meet twice a week for an hour and a half each time. “Most meet at libraries, but they can meet at a grocery store (restaurant area) or coffee shop; it just has to a public place,” said Rikess. Students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have, such as earning a GED or obtaining U.S. citizenship. “All the students have different levels of need and goals,” Rikess noted. Rikess pointed out that most students have goals of improving their reading, writing and spelling, as well as speaking skills. “They need to be able to converse in English with neighbors, teachers, doctors and employers,” she said. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. “We

He then worked for the YWCA Adult Literacy Center in Pottstown as a tutor for five years. “Steven has been working as a volunteer tutor for OIC since 2016. Three years ago, Steven started working with a student on adult basic literacy. In that time, the student has increased a grade level every year,” said Rikess. “They continue to meet every week.” In addition to tutoring, Kincaid teaches two English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for the OIC. He also volunteers his time on Fridays to work with students in the Fast Trak GED program at the newly opened Coatesville OIC office. “If a student needs additional help, Steven will work with that student one-on-one to help them succeed,” said Rikess, adding, “We are very thankful for Steven’s dedication
