Ways To Stave Off Cabin Fever By Ann Mead Ash
Since Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf ordered a statewide shutdown on March 16, those who found themselves at home - with or without children - may be struggling to fill the hours in quarantine. Mary Bauer, founder of Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, based in Chester County, has not hesitated to see the value in the hours. “Take advantage of the quarantine and get some fresh air and exercise with your dog, said Bauer, who recommended throwing a ball or flying disc or working on basic training techniques. Those without pets to play with also have a variety of options for staving off cabin fever. Time online can be productive for both children and adults, so consider searching the internet for free classes and other educational resources. Podcasts in an area of interest can help
make the hours move more quickly, and online puzzles and games can also help keep the brain engaged. The situation is ideal for families to spend time creating quality experiences and memories. Break out the board games or the playing cards or just engage in an old-fashioned game of charades. Getting outside is also a great option. Yard games such as croquet or badminton are good choices when the weather is fine. A piece of chalk can create a hopscotch game in seconds, and a length of rope can provide hours of jumping activity. Maintaining social distance is easier in the great outdoors, so walking, running, and bicycling are all ways for members of a family to stay active while spending time together in the fresh air. In addition, those with school-age children may want to consider structuring days to keep a routine in See Cabin Fever pg 2

The members of the Troxell family of Mount Joy, including (clockwise from left) Charli, Charlie, and Alli, played four-square together during a recent day off from school. The Troxell children attend Dayspring Christian Academy in Mountville. Families are encouraged to find safe, fun activities to do together while many of their other activities may be on hiatus.
Retreat Center Makes Adjustments Like so many other organizations, Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has had to adjust its operations. The Christian camp and retreat center has canceled all retreat groups that had been scheduled for the next few weeks.
While churches and other faith communities are currently not open to the public, worship is still thriving thanks to live events that are offered on websites and Facebook pages. In addition to live streaming services, many facilities are also offering Bible studies, daily devotionals and family game nights. “The church is not about a place where you gather - brick and mortar, said the Rev. Jimmy Smuda, pastor of Trinity Assembly of God (AG) Church in West Chester. “It’s about the connection to one another and ultimately to God. Trinity AG is currently offering live streaming of its Sunday service as well as online Bible devotions, prayer nights and more. All are invited to participate; See Worshipping Online pg 4
Church Opens Food Pantry
The shutdown has resulted in a loss of income, and executive director Peter Fiorello noted that Black Rock depends upon retreat revenue, summer camper fees, and donations to pay staff members and to maintain operations. “As groups cancel, we have had to trim our staff, which stretches our ability to prepare for summer and the future, Fiorello said. “We as a team continue to pray for wisdom and seek God’s help during these times. We are diligently planning for summer and how we can best serve our campers and families, if God gives us the opportunity to do so. In addition to working on ideas, Black Rock has also been involved in practical activities. “In an effort to support our staff through this challenging time, especially for those who have been laid off, such as housekeeping and kitchen staff who only work when we are hosting retreat groups, Fiorello requested that the kitchen staff compile packages of food and See Retreat Center pg 2

Even though Gateway Church in Parkesburg is temporarily closed, the congregation is still serving the community by offering a free food pantry in the church’s vestibule. Free food is available to anyone in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The makeshift food pantry includes a shopping cart filled with nonperishable food items and snacks, as well as a freezer, where meats and frozen meals are offered to the public. “ We always had a shopping cart in our vestibule, where we collected food for people, explained congregation member Christy Rucker. “When the cart got full, we took food over to the food pantry at Sandy Hill (Community Church). We also had food boxes from the Chester County Food Bank and offered gift cards. When the church closed, Rucker asked church See Food Pantry pg 5

Cabin Fever from pg 1 place. Having meals, snacks, assignments, play, and other activities at approximately consistent times creates a sense of stability. Look for activities that encourage creativity. Remember the excitement of the possibilities that lie in repurposing an old shoebox? Children can feel that same sense of potential and utilize their imaginations with simple household items such as cardboard, crayons, cotton balls, and glue. Mandy Leggett, a homeschooling Conestoga-area mother and president of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, suggested using puzzles to teach about places. Her 10-yearold son completes puzzles of pictures from national parks, and the family does a virtual tour of each one as they put it together. Assembling the puzzle begins with a math assignment that measures the work surface to be sure there is room for the project. With libraries closed, many families with children may be missing educational weekly activities. Some libraries are offering story times online. Heather Smith, director of the ELANCO Library in New Holland, said that the organization is encouraging families to check out its online resources at www.elanco
library.org. “Libby and OverDrive are apps that you can use to download e-books and e-audiobooks for free with your library card,” said Smith. “Books are available for (children), teens, and adults. For the preschoolers, (parents) can read along with Tumblebooks and BookFlix.” Carol Wenger, youth and children’s librarian at Pequea Valley Public Library, added that anyone with an active Lancaster County library card may visit www.pvpl.org and click on eResources to find a multitude of great websites including Heritage, Automotive Repair, and Brainfuse. Also, now that there is time, maybe get to those activities that have been at the bottom of the “to-do” list for what seems like forever. Clean out the basement, the attic, or the garage. Live in an apartment? Clean out the cupboards or closets. Sanitize countertops and other areas in kitchens and bathrooms regularly. Or maybe go through the closet and prepare for warmer weather by weeding out the clothing items that were not worn last year and are ready to be donated. Another way to get ready for those days of summer is to pull out the lawn furniture or prepare the flower and vegetable beds.
Ethan Lawrie, age 10, son of Mandy Leggett of Conestoga, displays a puzzle he and his family have worked on completing. Activities that are fun and educational can help keep children busy and encourage the making of family memories. Go to the grill for a dinner that is different from the usual. Maybe delve into the freezer for some items that need to be used and exercise a little creativity by holding an impromptu barbecue. Of course, venturing out to get food and other items, such as medications, is a necessity. But an “every family for itself” attitude need not prevail either. Going out in public means practicing social distancing for the health and safety of all, but it can also be an opportunity to serve the community. Have an elderly neighbor who is safer at home? Why not see what groceries or medicines can be picked up for
them and left on their step or porch? Or consider purchasing a few extra nonperishables for the local food pantry during a regular shopping trip. Contact the organization that runs the pantry to find out what it needs and the best times and methods to drop off items. There are opportunities to show children the value of community-mindedness, not wasting food or other goods or resources, healthy habits like handwashing, and planning rather than panicking. And, of course, with many regular activities on hiatus, spend the time learning new things and making memories.
support the organization through financial contributions. “We invite partnership from those who are able to help fill the gap of lost retreat revenue and to (fund) scholarships (for) affected families this year, as these times clearly will impact many in a deep financial way,” Fiorello said. Fiorello pointed to Psalm 86:1 as a source of encouragement, as it is a reminder of God’s trustworthiness, mercy, joy, love, and forgiveness. Individuals can live out their confidence in God’s goodness by refraining from fear and panic and by looking for opportunities to help those in need, he said, adding, “We can
show this love by doing two simple things each and every day moving forward: Ask your neighbor, ‘How are you doing?’ Then ask, ‘How can I help?’” Fiorello continued, “During difficult times, the best way for us to show our love for God is by loving our neighbor and putting their needs ahead of our own.” Individuals may visit www.blackrockretreat.com/ donate/ to learn more about sending a child to camp, establishing a business partnership with Black Rock, or attending a fundraising event. Readers may also search for “Black Rock Retreat” on Facebook.

On March 14, Master P’s World Class Tae Kwon Do in West Chester closed its doors in an effort to help stop transmission of the COVID-19 virus. The martial arts school, which serves a student body of more than 300 children, adults and families in the Chester County area, immediately began planning a move to online instruction. Black belt instructors collaborated to create lesson plans, discussion topics and daily challenges to help students continue building their bodies, minds and hearts while staying safely in their homes. On March 17, just three days after closing the physical location, Master P’s World Class Tae Kwon Do launched the first day of the “Virtual Dojang.” The program has been running ever since, and staff members plan to continue to do so until it is safe to hold normal classes once more. Virtual classes are offered five days per week, and attendance averages more than 100 participants per class. Students can take physical training classes led by their instructors, listen
cart. Upon approval, the cart was refilled by the church’s women’s group. “ We added a freezer, and someone brought in a bookcase to hold the food. Now there is another food rack and boxes all around the space,” Rucker said. “We leave the front doors open 24/7 so it can always be accessed. People can drop off food anytime and take food anytime and privately.” In order to keep the pantry going, the church is depending on donations from the public. “The canned goods are great, but (we also need) meat like hot dogs, hamburger patties and chicken nuggets,” said Rucker. “Other items that go quickly are peanut butter and jelly, pasta and children’s cereals.” There is a note at the pantry, which reads, “Please take only what you truly need and come back again later for more.” “There has been a heavy rotation of food going in and out for the last two weeks,” Rucker reported. “As I was leaving (recently), an older gentleman was going in, and while we kept our distance, he was so thankful. It was humbling.”

YMCA Launches Virtual Platform The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW), a nonprofit organization composed of eight YMCA branches serving Chester County, continues to expand its efforts to support and strengthen the community safely during this unprecedented time of government-ordered shutdowns. During a time when many are feeling isolated, YGBW is working to keep the community active and connected through its new virtual platform, Y at Home. In lieu of basketball’s March Madness, the YMCA has launched April Animal Madness, with more than 60 animals featured in an activity-filled tournament for the whole family. The tournament will determine the ultimate animal champion based on which participants find to be the most fascinating. April Animal Madness provides more than 130 indoor and outdoor activities, including arts, games and exploration, that are intended to help children and families connect with nature. Voting started on April 4. Readers may watch the promo video and download their bracket at www.ymca gbw.org/aprilmadness. The Y is also offering virtual story time for children every day at 1 p.m. The live stream of the first story time has been watched more than 1,100 times. To view the story, readers may search for “Y LIVE: Storytime With Ms. Janelle” on Facebook. STEM, education and enrichment activities for families on Y at Home can be found at www.ymcagbw.org/education -enrichment-resources-families. YGBW also launched an Adventure Wellness Challenge, and currently more than 1,600 people have signed up. The challenge features a variety of fitness and wellness activities meant to help people stay healthy, tackle new challenges and connect with others while participating in a joint program virtually. Y at Home also features virtual group exercise classes and many other resources from the YMCA of Greater Brandywine. Classes are available live as well as recorded. More than 1,000 people viewed the first of the live classes. Classes are held every morning during the week at 9 a.m. and include Ultimate Cross Training, Yoga, Pilates, HIIT and Barre. Families can even learn how to hula hoop, as well as get tips from one of YGBW’s personal trainers, who shows viewers how to use everyday household items for strength training and more. Readers may visit www.ymca gbw.org/ymca-home for a complete schedule of offerings or to register for the Adventure Wellness Challenge. Like many nonprofits, the YMCA is facing significant financial stress due to the governmentordered shutdown. Donations are needed to help to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability. All donations are taxdeductible, and with the passage of the CARES Act, people can deduct up to $300 in charitable donations on their 2020 taxes, even if they do not itemize. Donations can be made at www.ymcagbw.org/join -our-mission.

REAL ID News Posted REAL ID is optional in Pennsylvania. There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID. PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs. Federal REAL ID regulations require that PennDOT verify a customer’s identity, Social Security number, Pennsylvania residency, and name changes (if applicable), even if a customer already has a Pennsylvania driver’s license or ID card. More information about document requirements, including a printable document checklist, can be found on the Document Check page of the PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services website. Customers have three options for obtaining a REAL ID product. Customers may order their REAL ID online if they have been pre-verified; they can visit any PennDOT Driver’s License Center, have their documents verified and imaged, and their REAL ID product will be mailed to them within 15 business days; or they can visit one of 12 REAL ID centers and receive their REAL ID product over-the-counter at the time of service. When a customer gets their first REAL ID product, they will pay a one-time fee, plus a renewal
REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and photo ID cards have now been available to Pennsylvanians who want them for a full year, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reports that it is well on its way to meeting the projected demand for the federally-approved form of identification. Based on data from other states offering an optional REAL ID program, PennDOT projected that 1.3 million of its customers would get a REAL ID prior to the federal deadline of Thursday, Oct. 1. Since March 1, 2019, PennDOT has processed about 2.7 million customers, with more than 826,000 individuals choosing to opt in to the REAL ID program. The remaining 1.8 million have chosen not to participate or use an alternative federally-acceptable form of ID come the October deadline. A federally-acceptable form of identification (whether it’s a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a valid U.S. Passport/Passport Card, a military ID, etc.) must be used as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building that requires a federally acceptable form of identification ID for access on and after Oct. 1.

fee. The expiration date of their initial REAL ID product will include any time remaining on their existing non-REAL ID product, plus an additional four years, unless the customer is over age 65 and has a two-year license. This expiration date structure means that the customer will not lose time that they have already paid for. After the initial REAL ID product expires, the customer will pay no additional fee, beyond regular renewal fees, to renew a REAL ID product. To meet the added demand for REAL ID-compliant products, PennDOT upgraded seven of its existing driver’s license centers to allow for over-the-counter issuance of REAL ID. Those centers are located in Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre, Rockview in Centre County, Erie, Altoona, Norristown, and South 70th Street in Philadelphia. Several new locations were added. They include 1025 Washington Pike, Route 50, Bridgeville; 143 S. Gulph Road, King of Prussia; 1101 MacArthur Road, Allentown; 429 N. Enola Road, Enola; and 2090 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. REAL ID-compliant products are marked with a gold star in the upper right corner, standard-issue (non-compliant) products include the phrase “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES,” per federal regulations. Sample images can be viewed on PennDOT’s website. More information about REAL ID in Pennsylvania, including frequently asked questions and information on documents required for REAL ID, can be found at www.penndot.gov/REALID.

Beginning immediately, Giant is placing a limit of two items on key categories throughout the store, including paper goods and disinfectant products. Effective March 25, all in-store pharmacies will open at 6 a.m. every Wednesday until further notice to accommodate older and immunocompromised members of the community. This change aligns with the modified store hours of 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. daily announced to service customers who are age 60 and older and for those who are immunocompromised. For the hours of the pharmacy at local stores, readers may visit the Giant or Martin’s websites. Senior customers can now pick up their prescriptions using the Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct parking spaces at their local store. The prescriptions will need to be paid for (by credit card) in advance by calling the pharmacy. Once the customer arrives at the store, they call the pharmacy regarding their prescription pickup. Impact from pg 8 the preliminary designs, we quickly realized that more detailed topographic survey information was needed to determine the feasibility of the project and to eventually develop the final designs.” The project was launched in response to the villagers and local pastors who reached out to FIA leaders about the severe hardships caused by water scarcity in their region. “Our children and people are sick due to disease and sanitation issues from water shortages, especially in the dry season,” reported Manuel, a nurse practitioner who serves a population of almost 2,344 villagers in more than 500 households spanning 50 to 60 villages. The top three health issues in Vanuatu are water-related: scabies, skin diseases, and malaria. Just to have enough drinking water for one day, the villagers must walk an hour each way to catch water in containers that
often previously held kerosene or oil. Boyer and his fellow volunteers have prepared the way for future workers to continue this life-changing WASH (Water And Sanitation Health) initiative. FIA has secured a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the demands of thousands of villagers nearby. Over the course of the next

five years, more volunteer teams will work to run 16 miles of gravity-fed piping from the source to 30 villages, three schools, and two clinics below, providing clean water to more than 3,500 people. “There is so much value in the work that FIA does,” stated Boyer. “It’s more difficult for people to understand the message of Christ if they are without basic needs. But if those needs can be practically met, it opens a lot of doors.” FIA is currently recruiting more volunteers for trips to Vanuatu planned in June and August. Laborers are needed to continue progress on a base camp being constructed to house future teams working on the water projects as well as a projected youth and Bible conference center that will be used to equip indigenous leaders to take the Gospel into neighboring villages. “Past teams have made great progress repairing and repainting machinery, constructing cabins and bunk rooms, and beginning work on a kitchen/dining building,” relayed Brosey, “but we are still in need of individuals to help with plumbing, painting, construction of kitchen cabinets, and laying of tile floors, plus electrical wiring of the kitchen/dining building.” In addition, two or three people are needed for two weeks each in August to run a bulldozer, a trackhoe, and a skid steer to construct a road to assist the water project. Trips may be paid in full through tax-deductible donations from family and friends. “I would definitely go again and encourage others to travel with FIA,” said Boyer. “I find that I receive so much more than what I give on these trips, and you will too.” For more information about serving with FIA, interested individuals may visit www.fiaintl.org.

The Giant Company recently announced several updates as part of its efforts to continue meeting the needs of its customers and communities during the COVID19 pandemic, including modified hours intended to help care for older members of the community. In order to allow more time for team members to sanitize, unload deliveries, stock shelves, and better serve customers throughout the day, all store hours were adjusted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. beginning on March 19 until further notice. Effective March 19, all Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are open from 6 to 7 a.m. to customers who are age 60 and older only. This age group is especially vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, according to the CDC. The schedule change will allow customers in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which enables social distancing. They will also shop prior to any other customers entering.
