Doe Run Names Transitional Student Pastor By Francine Fulton
While most newly appointed pastors spend the first few weeks getting to know members of the congregation during Sunday services and get-acquainted events, Gabrielle “Gabby” Kennedy has started her new position at Doe Run Presbyterian Church during a time when the church doors are temporarily closed. During Sunday services on March 8, the congregation welcomed Kennedy as the transitional student pastor. The Rev. Dr. Erin Cox-Holmes, Donegal’s executive presbyter, preached and then blessed Kennedy’s appointment. The church was closed to the public one week later. “My main duties would be creating and leading the worship services for Sunday morning and providing pastoral care to the congregation visiting shut-ins who can’t come to church and being present if they are in crisis, whether it be illness or when a loved one dies,” said Kennedy. “A lot of that (pastoral care) is going on - but now over the phone and through email.” Kennedy, who was born and raised in northcentral Pennsylvania, graduated from Lancaster Theological Seminary in 2017, receiving a Master of Divinity degree. Kennedy succeeds the Rev. Annalie Kornegay, who was dividing her time between Doe Run and Unionville Presbyterian Church.
Kornegay has been the pastor of the congregation since 2012. “The long-term pastor left about a year ago, and they had (Kornegay as) a transitional pastor,” Kennedy explained. “So far, it’s been a really good fit for the church and myself.” Doe Run is Kennedy’s first traditional pastorate. “I am not ordained, so I can’t perform sacraments or baptize people or administer Communion,” said Kennedy, explaining why her title includes the words “student pastor.” “I can’t moderate the session meetings, but Pastor Annalie is monitoring the meetings with me there.” Kennedy went to seminary with the intention of becoming a Unitarian Universalist minister but decided to leave that denomination. “I switched denominations, so I am at the beginning of the ordination process and hope to be done in two years’ time,” she stated. “It’s a rigorous process. I have to take Greek and Hebrew and (study) Presbyterian Polity.” Since the church building is closed, Kennedy has been holding online services in conjunction with Unionville Presbyterian Church. “Doe Run (has a) coffee hour, and we do that on Zoom,” said Kennedy. “I am doing the same job, but all from home. It’s an unprecedented experience. I believe the crisis will bond us because we are going through this strange time together.” Kennedy is looking forward to when congregation members can return to attending church in the building. “It’s definitely a family

In December last year, Melanie Underhill, a four-year veteran of single parenting, announced that she had created Single Moms, a support group for single mothers. The group started out meeting in person once a month at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, but with the sudden changes to everyday life recently, meetings have been augmented. “I am holding our single moms support group online now every Friday on Zoom,” Underhill said. “The response … has been incredible. We are meant for community, and the moms are finding support and validation sharing their stories and struggles with those who understand fully. It’s also wonderful to see friendships form and the sharing of child care, resources and information.” The formation of Single Moms could not have come at a more crucial time, Underhill noted. “In these uncertain times, single parents may feel more isolated and alone than ever,” Underhill explained. “Fear of losing their job or income may plague their thoughts, and limited food, basic necessities, child care, and emotional support may

The Rev. Dr. Linwood Smith, pastor of Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Atglen, earned his Doctor of Ministry from Lancaster Theological Seminary last May. The topic of his thesis, “The Role of Clergy in Promoting Health and Wellness,” is always relevant, but it is particularly important at the present time. Smith’s research started three years ago. The results were based on findings in the West Mainline and Philadelphia districts of the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the AME Church. “This research can be used for all denominations,” Smith said. He discovered the biggest health issues facing those congregations were cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. For the clergy, recognizing the health issues among members and encouraging them to take steps to improve their overall wellness are a part of caring for their flock. “The proactive approach would be to take a sermon a month to talk about

Natural Lands Preserves Castle Rock Farm Natural Lands recently announced the successful preservation of the 54-acre Castle Rock Farm that straddles Pocopson and West Bradford townships in Chester County. The farm is adjacent to several other alreadyprotected properties, adding to a growing greenway along West Branch Brandywine Creek. The conservation easement ensures the property is never developed, preserving the pastoral, scenic views along West Branch Brandywine Creek. In addition, the deal means Castle Rock Farm will continue to provide ecological benefit by recharging groundwater

According to the study, open space contributes to the local economy, increases property values and saves money on everything from health care to recreation. It improves the air

The Pennsylvania Department of Aging recently issued guidance to help older adult day centers, adult protective services, and senior centers continue to meet the needs of older adults while coronavirus mitigation measures remain in effect. Some of the guidance addresses temporary senior center and adult day center closings, congregate meal alternatives, and processes that can temporarily be completed via telephone rather than in person. The guidelines are available at www.aging.pa.gov/service-provider-quicklinks/covid-19 -provider-guidance/Pages/ default.aspx. The department is also relaxing restrictions in the PACE prescription assistance program that require a person to use 75% of their medication before seeking a refill. Enrollees who wish to receive an exception must have their pharmacy provider call PACE at 800835-8040. All enrollees should be able to receive free home delivery of medications from their pharmacy. Enrollees who have difficulty obtaining their refills may call Cardholder Services at 800225-7223. Extension Modifies Services The ever-evolving coronavirus/COVID-19 situation has prompted additional changes to Penn State Extension programming and operations across Pennsylvania, as well as other public services offered by Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences. The college’s research conducted through its nine academic departments and at its research and Extension centers across the state - will continue in support of Pennsylvania agriculture, the state’s food system, and the well-being of citizens in the commonwealth. Steps are being taken to safeguard the health and safety of the Extension’s personnel, partners, and collaborators, according to Steven Loerch, the college’s senior associate dean. The college also continues its educational mission through remote teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses.

American Dairy Association North East has posted directions for freezing milk. This information is recommended for people who want to stock up on milk but worry about it expiring before they can safely return to a grocery store. Readers should begin by considering the space they have in their freezer. If they do not have room for a number of large milk gallons, they may think about stocking up on half-gallons and quarts of fresh milk. People should drink some of the milk in a container before freezing it. This step will create some space for the milk to expand safely when it freezes. People should leave one to two inches of empty space in each container. Readers are advised to thaw their frozen milk in a refrigerator, not at room temperature. After the milk is thawed, they should shake it before drinking it. To learn more about freezing milk, readers may visit www.americandairy.com.
operations of these nonprofits, and the Pennsylvanians they serve. This information will be reviewed and updated several times per day until the crisis ends. The nonprofit resource hub can be accessed at www.uwp.org/ covid19nonprofithub. All people-serving organizations, such as human service agencies, churches, and community service organizations are urged to update their information for the PA 211 resource database as services change. Single Moms from pg 1 mount up to overwhelming anxiety. Often, too, a stressful event may trigger PTSD or bring up past trauma.” Parenting is difficult, but doing it alone when social and practical supports are no longer available can be especially challenging. Underhill offered some encouragement to single parents, saying, “Know that you are strong and resilient, having faced difficult times before and emerging wiser yet.” Taking care of one’s self can help parents stay strong, Underhill said. She noted that catching up on sleep (if children allow it, that is), exercising, and eating as well as possible are important. Parents can also find a few minutes each day to stop and reflect and then make a plan for the following day. Establishing a daily routine is helpful in eliminating surprises, Underhill suggested. She also recommended taking a free class from online learning institutions and forming a child care co-op with other families in the neighborhood. Even with social distancing in place, there are ways that individuals can support single parents. “First and foremost, reach out to check in,” Underhill said.
“Offer encouragement, support, and validation. Lack of a partner to bounce ideas off of and to dispel anxiety can further the feelings of isolation.” Practical ways to support a single parent including making a meal or leaving a bag of groceries on their doorstep, dropping off books or an activity bag for the children to do at home, and researching available benefits, programs, and aid that single parents may qualify for during this time. Underhill is working on a housing share program to help to reduce the housing need in the community. Her idea is to connect single mothers with each other so that two single mothers and their children can share one home. “This helps moms afford a better home in a better neighborhood, cover expenses, (provide) emotional support, (and share) child care and household burdens,” Underhill said. “The community needs to think outside of the box to address the needs of single parents, especially in these trying times.” For more information about Single Moms or to be added to the Zoom meeting, readers may email Underhill at melaniesunderhill@gmail.com.

The CBAR service does not replace existing reporting systems for complaints against priests, deacons, religious personnel or laity. CBAR was designed as a mechanism to respond to complaints against bishops for issues related to sexual misconduct. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia strongly encourages anyone making a complaint of alleged criminal activity to contact the appropriate law enforcement agency to make a report. Likewise, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, in keeping with policy, will report any alleged criminal activity to law enforcement.

The Catholic Bishop Abuse Reporting Service (CBAR) has been established as a result of the ongoing commitment of Roman Catholic Church bishops of the United States to addressing the issue of abuse in the church. CBAR is a service operated by Convercent, an independent, third-party entity that provides intake services to private institutions for reports of sensitive topics through a secure, confidential, professional platform. Individuals may go to www.reportbishopabuse.org to file a report or call 800-276-1562. CBAR allows for individuals to relay to church authorities any reports of abuse by a U.S. Catholic bishop. When a report is received, it will be forwarded to the local metropolitan archbishop, who will undertake the responsibility of initially assessing the report. In the event that a report is received that concerns a metropolitan archbishop, it will be forwarded to the bishop of the senior suffragan diocese by the

Clergy from pg 1 health and wellness,” Smith said. According to Smith, some issues such as mental and emotional health may be difficult to talk about, even with the clergy. Creating an environment of trust can make a big difference. “We need to tell people it’s OK to see a therapist,” Smith said. In his thesis, Smith identifies eight ways for clergy to promote health and wellness. They include partnering with hospitals to promote their programs and encouraging everyone to have a good primary care physician. Promoting health and wellness also extends to related community issues such as limited transportation and proximity to food stores. Smith believes that clergy members play a great part in the community at large as trusted sources for information and resources. “Clergy and the church are still one of the most trusted institutions,” Smith said. “When clergy support health and wellness initiatives, it improves trust. As a clergy person, you have to go to reliable sources. When people have information they can trust, they make better decisions.” At the current time, Mount Zion AME is practicing social distancing. “The last four weeks we have not had services face to face. The church is using an app called BlueJeans for our services. It is similar to Zoom,” Smith said. “At least once a week, we are promoting information from the county or the CDC and the stay-at-home order.” Smith’s full thesis can be found online by visiting www.pqdtopen.proquest.com and searching for “The Role of Clergy in Promoting Health and Wellness in the West-Mainline and Philadelphia Districts of the Philadelphia Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.” Smith is also preparing a condensed version of the thesis that will be available in pamphlet form in the near future. “The message is we as clergy make a significant difference in the health of our congregations and the community,” Smith said. Mount Zion AME Church is located at 404 Zion Hill Road, Atglen. For more information, readers may visit www.mountzionamecatglen.org.

Deadline For Rebate Moved
COTA Seeks Assistance Personal Finance Tips Posted From Public
As Pennsylvania continues to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the state Department of Revenue has extended the application deadline for the Property Tax and Rent Rebate (PTRR) program until Thursday, Dec. 31. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are age 65 and older; who are widows and widowers age 50 and older; and who have disabilities and are age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters. In addition, half of Social Security
income is excluded. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners can increase rebates to $975. As specified by law, rebate distribution will begin on Wednesday, July 1. After Tuesday, June 30, rebates will be distributed as claims are received and processed. Applicants may obtain Property Tax and Rent Rebate claim forms (PA-1000) and related information online at www.revenue .pa.gov or by calling 888-2229190, which is a toll-free number.
The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) was founded in April 1986 when residents of Bloomington, Ind., rallied around a toddler who needed a life-saving liver transplant. For more than three decades, COTA has assisted thousands of transplant families by helping to raise funds for transplant-related expenses. COTA has built extensive volunteer networks across the
nation in an attempt to ensure that no child or young adult needing an organ or tissue transplant is excluded from a transplant waiting list due to lack of funds. April is National Donate Life Month, and help is needed to support individuals who need transplants. Readers may visit www.register me.org and register to be a designated organ and/or tissue donor.

Spring officially kicked off on March 19 and National Cleaning Week began on March 22. While readers may find themselves cleaning their homes, TopCashback.com’s personal finance expert, Rebecca Gramuglia, recommends that people tidy other areas of their lives as well, including their personal finances. To help organize their finances, readers may consider the following tips. Readers should set up a system for tracking their spending and storing information related to their personal finances. To log spending, readers may consider creating a spreadsheet. They should store receipts, bank statements, bills, medical insurance information and other important documents using a filing system that works for them, whether it is a file box, a file cabinet or even a set of shoeboxes. Electronic files should be backed up, either on external drives or to the cloud. Developing a storage system may not only make tracking one’s spending easier, but it may be useful when gathering information for one’s tax returns. Readers should create a realistic budget and stick to it. A budget can help ensure people do not spend more than they earn, help them keep their spending priorities in check, and advance them toward using their money wisely. A basic budgeting tool is the 50/20/30 rule, also known as the needs/savings/wants rule. It entails spending only up to 50% of one’s after-tax income on essentials, such as housing and food; 20% on financial priorities such as
debt repayments and savings; and 30% on wants, such as vacations. Readers are advised to create a bill calendar that correlates bill payments with paydays. If one payday seems to have more financial obligations than another, a person may contact his or her credit card company or lender to see if their billing cycle can be adjusted. In this way, a person may space out their bill payments to help them make all their payments without struggling financially for part of the month. Another important aspect of financial spring cleaning is evaluating and paying off debt. Readers should find out how much they owe and how much they are paying in interest so they may make a plan to tackle their debt. Readers may strategically pay off debt by adopting the debt avalanche method. This method requires readers to make minimum payments on all their debts while focusing their main debt payoff on a single account. Instead of targeting accrued balances, a person using this method prioritizes high-interest debt to save money in the long run. Safety Tips For Grocery Shopping hand-off. Instead, customers should arrange to have the items delivered to their doorstep or a place nearby instead. Some companies have places on their order forms where customers can indicate special delivery instructions. FreshDirect says its drivers will no longer bring your groceries into your home. One benefit of ordering deliveries online or via an app is that customers do not have to hand money to the delivery person. Opportunities to tip the delivery person are included in most of the delivery apps and online ordering systems. Customers are encouraged to order earlier than they normally do. Though it is not a safety issue, customers may find that in the midst of higher demand, they have to wait longer than normal. The steps are basically the same for picking up prepacked groceries as for delivery. If the groceries have been ordered in advance and someone is merely putting the groceries in the car in the parking lot, shoppers should consider opening the car door themselves rather than having the person bringing the items to the car touch the handles. And if tips can be provided on the supermarket’s app, shoppers should choose that
option rather than handing over cash. A key way to prevent the virus’s spread when buying groceries in-store is to stay 6 feet away from other people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that is generally the distance within which people pick up coronavirus droplets through the air from a cough or sneeze. Such “social distancing” is a good strategy in any situation outside the home. Customers are encouraged to go shopping at a time that is less busy. Readers may type the store’s name and location in Google search, and often a box will pop up showing when foot traffic there is highest. Customers are encouraged to take germicide with them. The germicide should be used to wipe their hands and the cart, both before and after shopping. Customers are also encouraged to use a credit or debit card. That way, they do not have to hand over bills or receive change. Customers should use their own pen to sign receipts. If available, customers should consider using a virtual payment system like Apple Pay so that they do not have to open their wallet at all.

Finance Tips from pg 8 saving money a top financial priority. To make saving money effortless, people may have part of their paycheck automatically deposited into a savings account, or they may set up a regular transfer of funds. This way, they will not be tempted to spend the money elsewhere. Financial emergencies, such as a job loss, reduced hours, an illness, or major vehicle or home repairs, can strike at any time, so people should set money aside in an emergency fund as well. Additionally, readers should plan for their future. It can be easy to get distracted with spending on current obligations and wants, but these decisions
can impact one’s financial future and, in turn, one’s credit score. Whether a person hopes to apply for a mortgage, purchase a car or open a new credit card in the future, his or her credit score is used to determine creditworthiness. The five main factors that determine one’s credit score are payment history, inquiries, average credit age, credit utilization and variety of accounts. Readers should keep in mind that missing payments or applying to several lenders at once could drop their credit score significantly, and new credit card inquiries will remain on their credit report for two years.

running water. There is no data to show that washing fruits and vegetables with soap will do a better job of eliminating coronavirus or that the virus is spread by consuming those foods, Rogers says. However, rubbing fruits and vegetables under running water and scrubbing those with hard skins can help remove pesticides. Other steps may not make much difference. For instance, buying frozen vegetables rather than fresh under the assumption that they are packed in a more sanitary way has not been backed up by evidence. Even if a grocery store or warehouse is thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, the delivery person needs to take the same precautions to prevent the spread of a virus to the customer. So while companies may highly recommend that deliverers wash their hands often, practice other hygiene measures, and stay home when they are feeling sick, they cannot monitor whether drivers are actually taking those precautions. And without paid sick leave, workers are going to try to push through as much as they can. That said, several steps should be taken when ordering deliveries. Customers should avoid a direct

With experts saying to avoid crowded places because of the novel coronavirus, people may wonder what to do about grocery shopping. One option people are turning to is grocery delivery services. Grocery delivery services have seen a dramatic increase in recent weeks, particularly in states where the most coronavirus cases have been reported, such as California, Washington, and New York. However, according to Consumer Reports, when someone buys groceries online or in stores, there are some simple steps they can take to try to limit their exposure to the novel coronavirus. First, nonporous containers, such as plastic, glass, and metal, should be washed using dish soap before they are put away. Simple rubbing with soap and water can kill the coronavirus, because it tears apart the virus’s outer barrier. After putting groceries away, people should wash their hands, countertops, and other surfaces that have been touched. Using a disinfectant is not necessary, unless one’s living space is being shared with someone who is exhibiting signs of respiratory illness or has been exposed to the virus. Produce should be washed with
