Little Free Library Promotes The Journey Of Reading BY FRANCINE FULTON
Little Free Libraries (LFL) are popping up at parks, businesses and at the homes of local residents. However, the newly installed LFL in Atglen that was created by Jess Steck and her husband, Dan, is not your typical book-sharing box. This one is shaped like a vintage travel trailer.
“My husband is a carpenter and he said, ‘I don’t want to do a square or a box. I want to make it look like something interesting,’” said Jess, explaining the box’s unique design. “We have done a lot of traveling with our RV, so we shaped it like a vintage trailer. He built it, and I did all the painting.” See Little Free Library pg 7
Members of the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library include (front, from left) Toady Kennel, Ginny Rettew, president Joan Esworthy, Deb Stanley, Kate Valentino, (back) Kathy Patterson, treasurer Karen Woods and Jeannette Kolb.
Friends Group Sets Plant Sale, Chicken Barbecue anging baskets and flowering planters, as well as geraniums suitable for Mother’s Day gift-giving, will be offered at the annual spring plant sale being presented by the Friends of Moores Memorial Library on Saturday, May 7. The fundraiser for the library will be held at the pavilion in Lions Club Park, 325 N. Bridge St., Christiana, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We’re not going to have bedding plants or herbs this year, just the hanging baskets and plants for Mother’s Day,” explained Friends member Jeannette Kolb. In addition, Randy Yoder will grill chicken halves that will be

for sale beginning at 10 a.m. It is not necessary to order chicken in advance. All proceeds will be used to benefit the library, including the upcoming Summer Reading Program. In addition to the plant sale and chicken barbecue, the Friends group holds other fundraisers for the library throughout the year, including its annual golf tournament and book sales. The Friends also provide volunteers to operate the Read Moore Book Store, located in the lower level of the library. The bookstore offers new and gently used books for sale, as well as a children’s corner and a section for young adults. The bookstore will be open on May 7 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
More information about the bookstore is available at www.face book.com/ReadMooreBookStore. The Friends group, led by president Joan Esworthy, meets on the second Thursday of each month at the library at 2 p.m. New members are encouraged to attend. More information about the group is available at www.facebook.com /FriendsOfTheMooresMemorial Library. Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. The library is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. 37 years, we will not be CCWS anymore,” said Nicole Crist, CCWS development director. Along with the new name, the agency will also unveil a new logo. Although the name will change, CCWS’ mission statement will remain the same. According to www.ccwsmedi cal.org, the mission of CCWS is “to empower individuals and their families with education, resources, and support to make life-affirming decisions.” People are encouraged to host a watch party at their homes to view the virtual presentation together. “There will be watch parties at people’s homes and at churches,” Crist noted. To register for the virtual fundraiser and to learn about donation options, visit https:// givebutter.com/ccws2022. In addition to offering pregnancy tests and limited ultrasounds, CCWS offers prenatal vitamins, proof of pregnancy and free nurse consultations throughout the course of the pregnancy. Clients may also receive referrals to organizations offering resources such as homeless prevention and food assistance programs. Parenting classes are offered, as well as Bible studies and peer counseling. Families can use the points they earn from attending classes to “purchase” parenting essentials from the CCWS Parenting Boutique. CCWS has been serving county residents as a pregnancy resource center since 1985. It has offices at 1028 E. Lincoln Highway in Coatesville, at 203 S. Walnut St. in Kennett Square and at 139 W. Market St. in West Chester. All CCWS services continue to be offered free of charge in both English and Spanish. For more information about CCWS, visit the previously mentioned website, call 610383-0930 or visit www.face book.com/ccwsmedical.

Little Free Library from pg 1 United Way Will Honor Organization The trailer-shaped box is to interact with the neighbors, made of wood with a clear who were a great help to the Stecks when their property flooded last fall. “Our house got pretty flooded during the storm in September. People we never met came to help us,” Jess said, noting that the Octorara Creek flows behind their home. “Having a Little Free Library for people walking by (where they) can grab a book is a way to further interact with the community. We moved in about week before the lockdown at the start of the pandemic, and we didn’t get a chance to know people because we all went inside.” So far, Jess has already met one of her neighbors through the LFL effort. “When I was filling (the LFL) up, I gave a book to somebody walking by,” she said. The Steck LFL is located at 745 Steelville Mill Road, Atglen. A listing of other local LFLs can be found at the aforementioned website.
Over the past two years, nonprofit organizations have aided many community members in Chester County. The United Way of Chester County invites the public to join it in honoring community heroes by sharing a story of how a Chester County nonprofit went above and beyond to support its community or made a difference to someone and his or her family. As a small way to show its gratitude, United Way of Chester County will share these stories throughout the month of April and will give cash donations to five organizations to honor their staffs. The donation recipients will be chosen at random. To honor a community hero, visit http://bit.ly /UWCC-CommunityHero and fill out the form. The deadline for submissions is
Deputy County Administrator Appointed Following a monthslong search, Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline appointed Erik Walschburger as deputy county administrator. He will support county administrator Bobby Kagel in the supervision and direction of all county government programs and administrative operations. Walschburger comes to the Commissioners’ Office from the Chester County District Attorney’s Office, where he most recently led the appellate unit and prepared and presented
cases before the Pennsylvania Superior and Supreme Courts. He previously oversaw all of the diversionary programs and Treatment Courts for the District Attorney’s Office. Currently, Kagel has 21 department heads reporting to him. By adding Walschburger, he will have fewer direct reports. The change will allow him to devote more time and attention to working with the Erik Walschburger commissioners on issues like Walschburger received his trying to reopen two recently closed county hospitals and law degree from Widener Uniensuring that elections run versity after graduating from Temple University. smoothly.

Each book inside the box is stamped with an image of the trailer along with the LFL charter number, which is registered at www.littlefreelibrary.org. It also bears the LFL motto, “Take a book. We always wanted to have one,” said Jess. “(People) have all these books that (they) read. I am not a book keeper. If I read it, I am not going to read it again.
