BY FRANCINE FULTON
When an elderly family member passed away, leaving behind a massive book and DVD collection, Sawyer Johnson of Christiana decided to sell the items as part of an Eagle Scout project to benefit the Moores Memorial Library of Christiana.
Expo to showcase the best of Octorara
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Plans are currently underway for the annual Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science & Technology (OABEST) Expo that will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Octorara Junior-Senior High School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. Among the planned festivities are a student art show, a petting zoo, a craft show, children’s activities, a mobile video game truck, a tractor show and displays by student and community organizations.
Students from the Octorara Area Career and Technical Education Programs (OACTEP) are helping to organize the event along with Lisa McNamara, director of career and technical education for the Octorara Area School District.
“Planning (for OABEST) starts in October. We have about 2,000 people attend this event,” said McNamara, noting that students in each of the OACTEP areas of study are planning certain aspects of the day.
New attractions this year will include a community job fair and a community yard sale.
Students in the Business, Marketing and Entrepreneurship program will help with the job fair during which participants will be able to speak with representatives from local companies that are hiring. “We are doing mock job interviews,” noted student Denise Washington. “We will ask people interview questions and (discuss) what the company looks for in an employee to help them be prepared for their on-site interviews they will be doing at the job fair.”
For the yard sale, residents of the Octorara Area School District are invited to set up a table in a 10-by-10foot space and sell their gently used items. There is no fee to participate.
Also new this year is a cornhole tournament fundraiser for Kacie’s Cause. For more information, contact Kristen Brown at kristen.kaciescause@gmail.com.
Students in the Graphic Design and Illustration program are in charge of the art show. “We are hosting and setting up the senior art show, and the National Honor Society is also selling ceramic bowls and artwork,” noted student Lydia Ridderhoff.
Student Brady Zimmerman noted that the Engineering and Drafting Technology program students will demonstrate a 3D printer.
Students in the Culinary program will offer food items for sale, and Animal and Plant Science Technology students will run the petting zoo. “We will have pigs, chickens and seven or eight baby goats,” noted student Caleb Spencer.
Home Security and Protective Service Academy students are organizing the displays by local first responders. “We will have fire companies (with) ambulances and fire trucks, and they will also demonstrate vehicle rescues,” noted McNamara.
Students from the Diversified Occupations program will have a display table, and students in the Child Care Education program will present children’s crafts and offer temporary tattoos.
Shoes will be collected as part of a fundraiser being presented by the high school Leo Club and the Octorara Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).
For more information, visit www.oabestexpo.com or contact McNamara at lmcnamara@octorara .org. Local artists and crafters as well as yard sale vendors are also asked to contact McNamara to reserve a spot.
Sawyer, a member of Atglen Boy Scout Troop 20, will present a book and DVD sale on Saturday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot at the library, located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. All proceeds will be used by Sawyer to fund his project, which will include the installation of two park benches, fencing and a shrub.
All items will be nominally priced, and only cash will be accepted. “We will have a bulk option where you can get a bag of DVDs,” said Sawyer, noting that the bags will be provided.
Sawyer, 14, a homeschooled student, explained that the sale items are from his great-uncle, who resided in Oxford. “He had over 4,000 DVDs, and we didn’t even count the books, but there are hundreds,” said Sawyer. “We came to clean the house after he passed away, and there were mountains of DVDs in his basement. We tried a few and they worked fine.”

Note: Some of the information here has been extracted from Joan Lorenz’s “A History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.”
It is Lorenz who, while gathering that history, also gathered together history-minded members of the community to form what became the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, which is celebrating its 23rd anniversary this year.
Lorenz’s book stated, “Salisbury Township was created in 1729, however its geological history goes back to the time when the area was an inland sea just beginning to form the limestone trap, quartzite, granite, gneiss and shales that make up our rolling tableland between the Welsh Mountains and the Gap Hills.”
Imagine this southeastern region of Pennsylvania long ago as the seas receded. It began to change to a sub-tropical hot and humid climate during the Jurassic Age. The dinosaurs that had lumbered about North America during hotter, drier centuries changed, too. The huge birdlike coelurosaur adapted living in the hot, humid swamps of Pennsylvania. Modern discoveries have revealed that this creature had primitive feathers. In fact, this large early “bird” is considered to be the forefather of even the tiny house wren of today.
When Lorenz was researching her book, she was told about a petrified footprint that had lain in the spring of the Spring Garden Hotel. Years before, John Price from the North Museum, which is

Warriors on the Water
“We’re really proud to feature other nonprofits during the day. Our belief is that we’re stronger as a community,” said Gina Neary, founder of Warriors on the Water Ltd. “Whether you’re a veteran or not, you can come show your support and have a good time with your family.” Each veteran, first responder and active member of the military will receive a free gift bag at the event, which will include a gift card that has been donated by a local business.
Gina first organized the event in 2019 and continued to hold a small-scale version of it during the COVID-19 pandemic in compliance with safety protocols. She said that this year will be the first event since before the pandemic that it will return in full force. “We’re excited for this year now that restrictions
have been lifted and we can get back to normal,” Gina added. “We want to let everyone know that we’re here and invite them to come see the lake and what we’re all about.”
Warriors on the Water Ltd. was officially founded in 2018, although Gina and her husband, Jim, have been looking for ways to support veterans for more than 20 years. Jim is a Marine Corps veteran himself and began offering free boat rentals and recreational activities for other veterans at the Octoraro Reservoir. Gina created Warriors on the Water
Ltd. as a way to raise funds and plan events to support veterans in the community. The nonprofit organization also coordinates community meals at veterans’ retirement homes throughout the year.
“We want people to come
out and take advantage of the beautiful lake and the peace here,” Gina said. “Being able to go fishing or kayaking on the lake for the day can be very healing. In this day and age, people need a place to go and relax.”

Library
Book, DVD sale
The DVDs represent all different genres of movies. “We will have them all categorized by genre on the (sale) tables,” said Sawyer. “We will have a table for science fiction, Westerns and so on.”
There will be an assortment of fiction and nonfiction books as well. “Before he retired, he was a physics teacher, and there are a lot of physics and science books, “ noted Sawyer’s father, Steve Johnson. “He has history books and was into geology, and there are books about Lancaster and Chester County history.”
Sawyer noted that the project was approved by the Scoutmaster, the troop committee and library director Trish Vandenbosch and the library board.
After the sale, Sawyer will buy a holly bush from a local nursery and build the two benches. He will also fence off a portion of the library near the entrance that people often use to take a shortcut into the library. “The fence will be mounted onto the concrete curb that exists by the library entrance,” said Steve, noting that the fencing will be purchased from Integrous Fences and Decks in Gap.
“(The work) will be on a Saturday in May or June. I will be leading other Scouts from the troop to help me,” Sawyer said. “One bench will go on the corner of the intersection where the library faces the road. The other bench will be under the cherry tree near the entrance.”
Sawyer must document the process in order to complete the Eagle Scout project requirement. “I’ll be taking photos of Scouts working throughout the whole thing and the building process and then write it up and submit it to the Scout board,” he said.
Sawyer added that he still has merit badges to complete before earning the Eagle Scout rank, which is the highest award in Boy Scouting.
The upcoming sale will be held rain or shine. Books and DVDs that do not sell will be donated to the Moores Memorial Library Read Moore Book Store and local charities.

part of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, had examined that footprint and declared it was the imprint of an ostrich-like coelurosaur from the late Jurassic Era. Clara Hamilton of Spring Garden then donated the footprint to the museum for safekeeping.
Hearing of this connection to the local distant past, Lorenz, accompanied by Melvin Robinson and John Oberholser, who was a Salisbury Township supervisor at the time, visited the North Museum to look at the footprint firsthand. They also saw the mammoth tooth originally found in White Horse by an unknown person while digging a ditch. This tooth has been identified as being from the Pleistocene
Era, which included the last Ice Age, even earlier than the footprint.
The North Museum agreed to create plaster casts of these two bits of the area’s ancient history. Today, the historical society displays these replicas in its glass case at the Salisbury Township Building, 5581 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, for all visitors. And the North Museum, as part of its student STEM program, has a geology study kit that includes Salisbury Township’s mammoth molar.
As residents walk and drive throughout the township, think of the bones of the extinct creatures that still lie beneath their feet. Who will be the next to find a dinosaur bone or tooth?

Myers, Leighton earn certification
Friends Association for Care and Protection of Children recently recognized two of its team members for completing the course work to become a certified recovery specialist (CRS). Through the Peer Support Expansion Initiative held by the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania, Yulanda Myers and Jessica Leighton recently completed the yearlong course that certifies them as peer specialists.
Peer recovery specialists are people who have lived experience and have been through life experiences like the experiences of those they support. They have been successful in personal recovery and have firsthand
knowledge of the healing process. While Myers and Leighton each had a unique recovery journey, they both utilized recovery community resources such as sponsors and peer support. Then they were inspired to give back to others who are going through similar substance use or mental health recovery journeys.
Becoming a CRS takes months of classroom learning and achieving at least 18 months of sobriety. Myers also completed an additional certification to become a certified family recovery specialist (CFRS). While a peer support specialist does not substitute or replace treatment with a health care provider when it is needed, he or she can provide a unique layer of support. Both Leighton and Myers are working at Friends Associations’ NIA House, a safe home located in Coatesville. In addition to housing, the NIA House program provides supportive services
