Planning Underway For Parkesburg’s Sesquicentennial Celebration ne year from now, Parkesburg Borough will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Plans are currently underway for a three-day community-wide celebration that will include a large parade, fireworks and activities in Minch Park, to be held on Friday to Sunday, May 20 to 22, 2022. According to Parkesburg Borough manager Joseph Reali, chairperson of the Parkesburg Historic Commission, the idea to hold a celebration came from local historian Gerry Treadway, commission vice chairperson. “We can thank Mr. Treadway, who brought it to our attention that the anniversary was coming up in 2022. He is the driving force behind the sesquicentennial,” said Reale.
O
The celebration will begin on May 20, which will be similar to the Parkesburg Action Committee’s Final Friday program held on Main Street in the borough. “Our desire is that our (Main Street) area be decorated and well lit. We will have volunteers and interested people dress in period costumes of their choice that pertain to the history of the borough. Our area is rich in history,” Reali noted. “We (also) plan on having live entertainment, presentations, food and vendors.” A celebration parade is planned for Saturday, May 21. Participants will include the Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) and representatives from the Parkesburg VFW. “We are inviting any and all of our high school and school bands to participate, and we are also inviting color

guards, floats, vendors, musicians, automobile (clubs), Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and dance organizations,” said Reali. “We would like for our current and past Parkesburg council members to be in the parade (as well).” The parade will travel through the south side of town with stops at the memorial located at the KVFD and at the VFW for a Memorial Day service. “Everyone in the parade will congregate in Minch Park. We plan on live music, historical presentations and shows and children’s activities,” explained Reali. “Our hope is to have a very large tent with tables for vendors who would like to set up.” The park’s historic baseball field, where a professional baseball team once played, will also be highlighted. The day will conclude with a giant firework display set to music.
Since 1970, Camp Cadet of Lancaster County has provided youths ages 11 to 13 with an in-depth look at careers in law enforcement with the goal of fostering positive relationships between first responders and youths. Last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp closed its doors for the summer. Trooper Kelly Osborne, director of the program, said she did not want to let another summer go by without Camp Cadet, so she improvised.

After more than 10 years of working as a teacher at Maple Grove Preschool in Atglen, Wendy Dougherty has been named the school’s new director. Maple Grove Preschool is a ministry of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, and is housed in the church building. “I oversee the staff and the curriculum, work on marketing and enrollment and (interact) with parents and families directly,” said Dougherty, explaining her new role at the school. “I miss the classroom interaction with the kids, but I think God placed me in this role at this time. I already knew the teachers and the staff. I knew how things worked and where things are, and it was a smooth transition.” Maple Grove Preschool offers three programs: Little Bears, for toddlers ages 2 and 3; Winkie Bears, for children ages 3 and 4; and Peter Panda, for children ages 4 and 5. “I taught Peter Panda for 13 years,” Dougherty pointed out.
The preschool is governed by a board of directors, which includes church members, parents and members of the community. According to www.maplegrovepreschool.com, the mission of Maple Grove Preschool is “to show God’s love to children and families by building a solid fountain for lifelong learning.”

At-Home Vaccinations Available As part of its effort to ensure every eligible Chester County resident who chooses to have a COVID-19 vaccine is able to receive one, the Chester County Health Department has partnered with local emergency medical services (EMS) agencies to schedule at-home vaccine appointments for those who are unable to attend a vaccine clinic. Through the partnership, advanced emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics are deployed to administer either the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine to individuals in their home setting. Caregivers for the individuals are also offered the vaccine, if needed. Health officials identified individuals throughout Chester County who would benefit from receiving the COVID-19 vaccination at home through lists provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the Chester County Department of Aging Services, and self-identification of the need. All individuals were contacted to confirm their need, and appointments were scheduled to administer the vaccine. The county’s at-home vaccine program began in late March, and as of May 10, 232 first-dose vaccines had been completed in Chester County, covering all individuals identified as needing a vaccine in the home setting. On average, each EMS agency team covered 10 at-home appointments a day, given the travel time and the time needed to remain with the See At-Home pg 8

WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. Maple Grove Preschool from pg 1 “The preschool has been here for 42 years. We want to continue to offer quality early childhood education and get (students) ready for the next level of learning,” Dougherty said. “I think we do a really good job balancing structure and play, which is super important for the prekindergarten kids who are heading into kindergarten next year.” The preschool day includes creative play designed to develop social and language skills, as well as age-appropriate classes in music, science, art and the Bible. “They have circle time, free choice play and academic centers, where they split into two groups for math and science and (return to one group for) literacy skills,” Dougherty explained. “After that, there is time to go outside and play. We have a special Bible time each day. We want to lead them spiritually as well to know and to love God, which is an important part of our curriculum.” Because of her years of teaching experience, Dougherty has many children pass through the school. “My first class (of students) are seniors this year. The boys are men; it’s amazing,” she stated. “The blessing of working here this long is you really get to know families, especially if they have several kids. You get to know them as people and (think of them as) family, and they become part of your story.” Dougherty said she plans to continue the programs and curriculum that are offered by the preschool and that there are no plans to rename the three classes. “They are 40-year-old names, but they are almost iconic to the area,” she said. “We thought about changing them, but they are part of who we are.” Maple Grove Preschool, 549 Swan Road, Atglen, is currently accepting applications for the fall semester. Visit www.maplegrovepreschool.com to print an application or call 610-5931159 for more information. Further details about the school are available at the aforementioned website and by searching for “Maple Grove Preschool” on Facebook.
