The fifth annual Octorara Angels Rainbow Run and Carbon Monoxide Awareness Event will take place on Saturday, June 1, at the Octorara Intermediate School, 228 Highland Road, Atglen. The event will kick off the Octorara Agriculture, Business, Environmental Science and Technology (OABEST) Expo, which is scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will feature a 5K run/walk, during which participants will be doused with color, along with a children’s fun run called the Rainbow Dash. The theme for this year is “Breathe Love - Breathe Easy!” The event has a dual purpose. First, it will help fund projects in the Octorara Area School District. Second, it is designed to raise awareness of carbon monoxide poisoning, which took the
lives of Carly Imbierowicz and Daulton “Daulty” Pointek on Nov. 22, 2014. The Octorara High School students died after carbon monoxide leaked into their car from a faulty exhaust. The 5K is noncompetitive and will wind its way through the course used by the Octorara cross-country team. The start and finish lines will be next to the parking area in front of the Octorara Intermediate School. Event-day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Zumba warmup at 8:50 a.m. The Rainbow Dash, which is free to children through second grade, will begin at 8:50 a.m. “The dash was introduced last year, and the youngsters had a blast during their own mini event,” said Carly’s mother, Donna Imbierowicz, whose family formed the Carly Imbierowicz Foundation, a nonprofit organization with the goal of saving lives by educating the public See Rainbow 5K pg 2

St. Peter Parish, 2835 Manor Road (Route 82), West Brandywine, will present its annual Community Festival, featuring games, food, musical entertainment and more, from Wednesday, May 22, through Friday, May 24. Festivities will start at 4 p.m. each day. Parking and admission will be free. Each night of the festival will feature special events. May 22 will be Kids’ Night. Highlights of the evening will include a video game truck from 5 to 8 p.m. Youths can play their favorite video games alone or against their friends, both inside and outside the truck. A fee will be charged per 20 minutes of play. There will also be a display of Doylestown Quarter Midget Racing Club (DQMRC) quarter midgets and micro-sprint race cars. Youngsters will also be able to take part in a make-and-take project that will be presented by students from the Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) program. Members of the Chester County Antique Car Club will hold their Spring Dust Off, featuring a display of classic cars, from 4 p.m. until dusk on Thursday, May 23. The rain date for the car show will be May 24. Also on May 23, a sock hop will be held in the Parish Celebration Center from 6 to 8 p.m. with disc jockey Bill O’Brien. Bingo will be featured in the Parish Celebration Center on May 24. Children’s bingo from 4 to 6 p.m. will be followed by bingo for adults from 6 to 8 p.m. Live music will be offered under the tent featuring performers from Fox Music Den and Two Ripped Jeans. There will also be a motorcycle rally that will include a display of motorcycles by a local club. Each night of the festival will feature face
painting, food, a display of emergency vehicles by the East Brandywine Fire Department and a chance to win gift baskets through a random drawing. According to Lisa Lane, a member of the festival committee, the church’s various ministries have been invited to be a part of the event as well. Those scheduled to participate include members of the church’s prayer shawl ministry, who will offer knitted items for sale, as well as the church’s garden club, which will present a spring plant sale. The ministries have also been invited to contribute to the gift basket giveaway. “The baskets include donations from local businesses, the parish ministries and the parishioners themselves. Last year, we had 40 baskets,” Lane said, noting that each basket will have a theme. “One basket is a cleaning basket, and there is a Longwood Gardens basket and basket full of dinner gift cards.” The baskets will be on display in the Parish Celebration Center. Winners will be announced on May 24 following bingo, and they do not need to be present. Food for sale during the event will include hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, homemade baked goods, soups and chili, tomato pie, soft pretzels, water ice, ice cream, cotton candy and more. “There will a barbecue outside with hot dogs and hamburgers made by the Knights of Columbus and food inside the Parish Celebration Center,” Lane noted. A special children’s meal will also be offered. Games will include a duck pond, a dime toss, a hole-in-one golf game and a football toss. There will be a nominal fee for each game. “These games are family-oriented and don’t cost a lot of money,” Lane said, adding, “(The Community Festival) is a not a fundraiser for the parish; it’s (to offer) a fun time. All are welcome.” For more information about the festival, including a schedule of events, readers may visit www.saintpeterchurch.net/community -festival. Two Octorara Junior-Senior High School seniors - Chris Singleton and Abigail Bridges - competed in the animation category at the recent regional Pennsylvania Media and Design Competition held at the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and took first and second places, respectively. Chris, whose animation was titled “Pranked,” was scheduled to compete at the state finals on May 21 at Dickinson College in Carlisle. Abbi’s project was titled “Sunset.” In addition to displaying their animations, students are required to include a narrative description or project summary that includes the project’s objectives, a list of software applications used to create the project, information about the amount of time spent creating the project and other criteria. The Pennsylvania Media and Design Competition (formerly known as the Pennsylvania Computer Fair) is an annual event presented by the CCIU and is designed to showcase students’ application skills, creativity and computer knowledge. According to http://media designcompetition.org, the event allows students “to unleash their creativity, learn how to convey information more dynamically and enhance the learning process.” The competition is open to all students in grades six to 12 in public or private schools as well as state-approved homeschool programs. First-, second- and third-place winners received individual medals. All first-place winners advanced to the state competition. In addition to animation, other categories of competition include 3-D design, digital movie, logo and graphic design, programming and web page design.

Avid gardeners may be enticed by the idea of a greenhouse that allows them to explore their passion for plants year-round. While it’s true that greenhouses afford this luxury, there are important things to consider before erecting a greenhouse in your yard.

Greenhouses require ample time to maintain. Greenhouses are not self-managing; they require heat, water, venting, electricity, and maintenance on the part of gardeners. Individuals need to determine how much time they have to devote to a greenhouse and then consider their options. Start by choosing the size of the greenhouse. Many experts, like those at the home and garden information site The Spruce, suggest getting the largest one you can afford and fit into the yard. It is much easier to fill a large greenhouse than try to expand on a small one later on. Next, consider whether you want to build the greenhouse from scratch or utilize a prefabricated kit that can make easier work of the job. Kits typically contain all of the materials needed, and working from a kit will be easiest for someone who is a construction novice. Look for “grower greenhouses,” which are all-purpose options with adjustable shelving and space for growing plants full-term. The next step is deciding where the greenhouse will be located. The goal is to have a consistent amount of sunlight yearround. A south-facing locale is ideal, and structures should remain north of the greenhouse so they do not cast a shadow on it. The building, cars, and technology resource Popular Mechanics advises gardening enthusiasts to take into consideration the angle of the sun during all seasons before choosing a location. Doing so ensures that the sun is not obscured in the winter or fall. Select a spot that also has ample

drainage, as you will not want water pooling up along the sides of or underneath the greenhouse. Raise the greenhouse on footings to alleviate flooding concerns. Consult with a gardening or agriculture expert about the best way to heat the greenhouse. Options abound, with electric-, gas-, and propane-powered heating sources. Some systems will require venting. You also will need to know what is available and legal in your area. Check to see if you need a building permit for the greenhouse and any accompanying heating elements. Once the greenhouse is situated, you can begin to add other items, like benches, additional shelving, hooks for tools, and even an automated watering or misting system. Greenhouses take commitment, but the reward is the chance to enjoy gardening all year long.

The Art Of Buying Art Designing a home’s interior can be fun. Whether furnishing a first apartment or a newly purchased family home, many people feel that the art they put on the walls of their homes is an expression of their individuality and that a home isn’t truly a home until its interior reflects the personalities of it residents. Furnishing a home with art can be

Add Privacy to a Porch If privacy is the goal, install curtain rods and hang lightweight mesh or another translucent material that obscures neighbors’ views without blocking out natural light. Decorative privacy screens and lattice are also options that can provide privacy while keeping the space appealing to the eye. Invest in outdoor sofas and chaises to create an outdoor living room right on the porch. If the budget allows, consider closing in the porch as a true three-season room so it can be used throughout fall, spring, and summer.

taste in art is eclectic, embrace that and have different rooms throughout your home reflect your different tastes. This can give each room its own unique feel and make for a colorful home.
Ensuring the Safety of Furry Party Guests When the season for outdoor entertaining arrives, time spent in the yard entertaining friends and family tends to increase. Barbecuing lends itself well to informal warmweather gatherings. While spending time outside, many pet owners like to have their furry companions nearby so they can enjoy the fresh air and fun as well. However, allowing pets to be outdoors when grilling or entertaining friends requires some forethought to ensure pets stay safe. #1377

attend the recent annual Pennsylvania 4-H Capital Days program at the Hilton Harrisburg Hotel and Capitol Complex in Harrisburg. The youth representatives from the county included Suzanna Angstadt of Coatesville,
Melanie Fusco of Pottstown, Melissa Johnson of Glen Mills, Anna Grace Jones of Aston, Aaron Phillips of Elverson, and Mary Wirtel of Malvern. Sponsored by Penn State Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program, Capital Days is a three-day educational program designed to engage youths in the bipartisan diplomatic process and prepare them to become active, engaged citizens. Participants learn about parliamentary procedure, how to read legislation,
and party roles and affiliations. Topics of additional workshops included advocacy, civil discourse, elections, and the voting process. As a culmination of the event, the youths used the knowledge gained to discuss and debate a bill by participating in a mock legislative session. Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding met with 4-H members during the event’s legislative lunch. Redding shared remarks about how the 4-H youth development
program plays an important role in developing leadership potential, as well as the current Pennsylvania Farm Bill’s Ag and Youth Grant program. Youth programs will be eligible to apply for grants to increase youths’ exposure to agriculture and grow the industry’s future leaders. For more information, readers may visit https://extension.psu .edu/programs/4-h.

Days observance, which will be held from Friday, June 14, through Sunday, June 16. Registration on the day of the event will begin at 6:30 a.m. The two bike rides will start at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run will start at 9 a.m., and the 5K run/walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Intercourse Fire Company will offer breakfast items for purchase starting at 6:30 a.m. Riders may choose the 25-mile route through the scenic countryside or, for cyclists who are looking for more of a challenge, a 62-mile metric century ride is offered. An optional King of the Mountain stage will be available for riders who prefer to take on significant inclines. Cyclists will have opportunities to win door prizes. Riders who take part in the King of the Mountain challenges will be entered in a special gift card drawing. At 10:30 a.m., awards will be presented to winners of the 5K run. Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female winners. Medals will be given to the top three male and female runners in seven age groups, including 14 and under, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, and 60 and over. The Kids’ Fun Run, which will be open to children up to age 13, will be held within the park. The route, which is nearly a half-mile long, will traverse the inner loop of the park for two laps. All children who run the laps will receive participation awards. Organizers encourage runners, walkers, and cyclists to form teams of family members, fellow church members, coworkers, or friends. A “team” option will be available to individuals who sign up online through https://thefactoryministries.com. Prizes will be awarded to the largest and best-dressed teams. Individuals who register by Sunday, May 26, will receive a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be held on June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Together Community Center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. In addition inviting to riders, runners, and walkers to take part in the event, The Factory is looking for volunteers to help on June 15. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717-687-9594. The Factory has its roots in the early 1990s, when two local churches surveyed the community about area needs. In response, a former sewing factory in Paradise was converted into The Factory Youth Center. In 2006, The Factory expanded to include social services for adults. As the organization continued to grow, the name was changed to The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries now offers a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, and the organization has become a hub for connecting needs and resources in the Pequea Valley area. It is a goal of the organization to empower local residents and strengthen the community.

Birth Care from pg 1 records of the members of the American Association of Birth Centers. In those four decades, Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have welcomed more than 9,000 babies into the world. In 2018, Birth Care’s clients delivered 501 babies, including two sets of twins. “We’re delivering the grandchildren of our earliest moms,” Saunders remarked. Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have office hours in Bart and Gordonville, deliver babies at the licensed and accredited birth center in Bart, and attend births at WellSpan Ephrata Hospital. One of the hallmarks of Birth Care is its commitment to making personalized care to mothers and new babies available regardless of ability to pay. Between 75 and 80 percent of Birth Care’s clients are uninsured. “I think that’s an important thing for people to know,” Ketcham said, noting that Birth Care offers a sliding fee scale based on clients’ financial condition. The board of directors also forgives the bills of families in dire need. To subsidize the discounts, Birth Care

Imbierowicz said the idea to hold the Rainbow Run was inspired by Carly. “I told the track coach that Carly always wanted to do a color run, and here we are still doing one five years later,” she said. “It’s a nice celebration. It was inspired by her, but it’s for all the brave angels, not just Carly and Daulty.” Last year, funds raised at the event were used to purchase a sound system for the Octorara field hockey team. This year’s proceeds will help finance the cost of solar panels in the career tech room at the Octorara Junior-Senior High School and to purchase books that will contain CO2 awareness stickers that read “Live. Laugh. Love. Life.” The event will be immediately followed by the OABEST Expo at the Octorara JuniorSenior High School, located across the street from the start and finish lines of the Rainbow Run. The community day fair, designed to showcase what Octorara students have achieved, will feature student demonstrations, science fair exhibits and an art show by students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Also featured will be first responder demonstrations, fire trucks, a petting zoo, music, games, hayrides, food, a large tractor show and more. For more details, readers may visit www.oabestexpo.com.

Millions of people board planes, cruise ships, buses and other modes of transportation every day. While most people envision bringing home souvenirs from their vacations or working on their suntans, others acquire a less-favorable memento: illness. Thanks to jet lag, recycled air and/or potentially unclean native waters, travelers may be vulnerable to illness on their trips. But that vulnerability does not mean they have to succumb to illness. Some effective ways to avoid getting sick while traveling include getting vaccinated before traveling, bringing along sanitizer, avoiding tap water and instead sticking to bottled water, avoiding uncooked fruit and produce, ensuring food is thoroughly cooked, and protecting against the sun and heat.
