WFCS students participate in Trash Stash
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Formore than 30 years, students at West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) have participated in Trash Stash, an effort to clean up local roadways and parks while also raising money for the school.
During this year’s event, held on April 15, approximately 200 students from preschool through eighth grade, along with their parents, participated in the cleanup.
The event is held to coincide with Earth Day and the annual “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful” initiative. All participants wore orange safety vests and gloves provided by the program.
Worksites this year included Silver Maple Farms in Cochranville, Salisbury Township Community Park (also known as Gap Park), The
Parkesburg POINT youth center and Parkesburg’s Minch Park. Some students picked up trash along Route 10 near Hershey’s Farm Market and Walmart, while others stayed at the school to clean up the playground and the surrounding property.
“We also (worked) up and down Fallowfield Road around the school,” said Patricia Slaughter, W FCS director of development. “This year, we had preschool and pre-K students help out on campus.”
By the end of the day, students and parent volunteers had collected about 93 bags of trash.
To raise money, WFCS students sent donation letters prior to the event. “They wrote letters to family, friends and businesses to raise money to support them in collecting the trash,” Slaughter noted.
Additionally, WFCS had a
dumpster available at the school from Harris Metals of Coatesville several days prior to the cleanup where school family members and the community could donate recyclable metal.
“We had a list of things you could recycle,” explained Slaughter, noting that electronics were not accepted. “People donated grills and office furniture that was metal. (Proceeds from) all the things that were collected in the dumpster was donated (back) to the school by Harris Metals.”
On May 12, the school hosted a Trash Stash celebration, where prizes were awarded to those who raised the most money and who wrote the most letters. All students were provided a treat from Penny’s Ice Cream Truck.
Prizes included tickets to the Philadelphia Phillies, Dutch Wonderland, Knoebels Amusement
Resort, Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park in Downingtown, Palace Bowling & Entertainment Center in Downingtown and the Crayola Experience, as well as Chick-fil-A coupons and a week of free summer camp at WFCS.
At the celebration, WFCS announced that its students raised more than $30,000 for the school’s operating budget through the 2023 Trash Stash event. This is the 35th year that the school has participated in the program.
WFCS, located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Financial aid is available. For more information, visit www.wfcs.org or the school’s social media accounts or call the office at 610-593-5011.

Octorara Area School District will host its second annual family literacy event, Literacy Under the Lights, on Wednesday, May 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event will be held outdoors on the Octorara Junior-Senior High School track and field, located at 228 Highland Road, Atglen. The program is open to families with incoming kindergartners through sixth-grade students.
During the event, families will travel to different stations around the varsity field to read and do an activity. The stations will be manned by high school students from different athletic teams and clubs. All children must be accompanied by a parent or an adult family member. Participants should bring blankets for seating.
“At each station, the adults or high school students will read a book, and there will be a game afterward,” explained Beth Peticca, kindergarten transition coordinator. “There is a big age range, so the books will be short, simple stories - usually funny stories. We will do a lot with animal-themed stories this year, too.”
She said that one of the goals of the event is for younger students and incoming kindergartners to become familiar with all the opportunities available to

them in coming years. “The little kids in the district can see that they can be on the football team or the tennis team or the newspaper club,” Peticca said. “We are trying to get as many clubs and teams as possible (to participate).”
Attendees can travel to the various stations at their own pace. There will also be an opportunity to win prizes.
“New this year is that all of our school nurses will have a health and wellness table together,” Peticca added. “They will provide information about healthy lifestyles.”
Representatives from local libraries will also be in attendance, including Robbyn Kehoe, director of the Atglen Public Library. “They can promote their summer reading programs,” Peticca noted. The event will also include a kickoff of the school district’s Summer Reading Adventure. As part of the program, every
student in kindergarten through grade six will receive the same book, “A Boy Called Bat” by Elana K. Arnold, to enjoy with his or her family over the summer.
Peticca explained the outdoor literacy event, which was held the first time last year, was modeled after a similar program in the Pequea Valley School District. “After the
pandemic, I just wanted to get people out and reading and spending time with their families,” she said.
In the case of inclement weather, the event will be moved into the gym at the Octorara Elementary School. For more information and to register, visit www.octorara .k12.pa.us. Walk-ins will also be welcome.

Model Railroading Days will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, to Sunday, Aug. 20. Admission is included in the regular museum admission. Visitors will experience a world of model trains in action with operating layouts and static displays in different

The boxcar comes ready to run on operating HO-scale layouts with metal wheels, metal couplers, opening doors, and added weights.

Kicking off summer
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“This is the second (Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff),” said Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the Intercourse Library. “(The first event) was held in 2022 to kick off the library’s Summer Reading Program and offer a day for families.” The event was so successfulattracting about 200 peopleit is planned again this year.
The 2023 Intercourse Library Family Fun Day and Summer Reading Kickoff will be held on Saturday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the library, 31 Center St., Intercourse. The event will include games, food, and the start of the used book sale, which will be held in the Perella Schoolhouse area of
the library that day and during regular library hours through Saturday, June 10.
Patrons of the Salisbury Township Public Library in Gap are invited to attend. Activities scheduled for the Family Fun Day will include face painting, giant yard games such as Connect Four and an inflatable dart game with a large bullseye.
Children’s librarian Christy Burke said there will be a scavenger hunt inside the library. “(Participants) will answer questions and then pick out a book to take home for free,” she said. O’Sullivan added that blank bookmarks will be available for a “design your own” craft. Cookie decorating will also be held, with one free cookie available per child.
Hot dogs will be sold for a nominal cost, and free popcorn will be available.
A fun run for children will be divided by age group. Children ages 4 to 7 will race at 9:30 and 11 a.m., and children ages 8 to 12 will race at 9:45 and 11:15 a.m. A preschool fun run for children under age 4 will be held just prior to the race for 8- to 12-year-olds.
The day will kick off the Summer Reading Program, which for 2023 has the theme “All Together Now.” Burke reported that many Intercourse-area children traditionally take part. “We usually have more than 500 (participants), and we get more than 1,000 (reading) logs back,” she pointed out, adding that the program will run from June 3 through Saturday, Aug. 12.
In addition to picking up reading logs at the kickoff, children will receive a calendar of special events that will be held at the Intercourse Library during the summer. Among the events will be visits from Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary and Talewise, an interactive story time program. “The Lancaster Science Factory will do a robotics program,” said O’Sullivan, who added that a representative of the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will also visit with a program.
According to Burke and O’Sullivan, local businesses have traditionally contributed coupons or prizes for the Summer Reading Program participants, in addition to the ones associated with the
county-wide program. “It gives our branch extra coupons,” said Burke, who noted that Cherry Crest and Oola Bowls will offer discounts to Intercourse and Gap reading program participants. Along with Summer
Reading Program events, family-friendly movies will be shown throughout the summer.
O’Sullivan noted that information about the events may be found at the library’s new website, https://intercourselib.org.

YMCA posts water safety tips
May is National Water Safety Month, and the YMCA of Greater Brandywine wants to ensure that every area resident has access to quality and affordable water safety resources and instruction. The YMCA offers thousands of swim lessons and free water safety instruction sessions annually.
Additionally, the YMCA has offered some tips for swimmers. To reduce the risk of drowning, people should never swim alone, regardless of age and ability. A lifeguard or other person should monitor the water. Katie Doochack, director of aquatic safety at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, noted that people in distress in the water are usually quiet rather than yelling and splashing.
At YMCA pools, lifeguards complete extensive training where they learn to constantly monitor the pools and perform counts. Additionally, regular drills and audits are performed to ensure that staff are prepared and responsive in the event that a rescue is needed.
YMCA Nicole Bandura, associate executive overseeing aquatics safety and risk management for YMCA of Bucks and Hunterdon Counties, advises swimmers to wear a red, black, or orange swimsuit because these colors have greater visibility in churning water than a blue suit does. Wearing a more visible suit could aid in the event a rescue is needed.
The YMCA also advises people to building their knowledge of water safety. YMCA swim lessons start with instruction around foundational skills - establishing comfort in the water while learning how to safely enter and exit a pool, how to turn onto one’s back and how to float. From there, instructors focus on strengthening these key skills while building confidence and endurance and then eventually progress to stroke development and higher-level skills.
Each year, the YMCA awards millions of dollars of financial assistance to ensure that everyone in the community has equal access to programs and offerings, regardless of their financial situation. Donations are accepted to help provide this assistance.

Dean Graybill of Paradise was known for telling stories of his experiences with automobiles. He considered writing a book to share with family, but after talking to some friends, he realized that his tales might appeal to a wider audience. “(They) said it would be of great local interest,” reported Dean. “They said, ‘I would buy that. People would love that.’” Working with Masthof Press of Morgantown, Dean has produced 151 pages of 165 stories with the title “Burning Rubber, Slamming Gears, & Cheap Gas,” published in mid-March. The pages are punctuated by color and black-and-white photos of vintage automobiles and trucks. Dean began writing about five years ago by sitting at the computer while listening to classic rock ’n’ roll. “It just took me back,” said Dean of the process. “If it had to do with cars, it had stuck in my memory.” Editor Keith Rohrer added color and detail to Dean’s recollections.
CREEKSIDE FOODS
The book recounts Dean’s experiences from Maple Grove to Pequea Valley and as far south as the Norman Wood Bridge. Names and places that may be familiar to area residents include the “S” turns on Hollander Road, Victor Weaver’s Poultry, Paul Shirk’s car lot, and the New Holland Community Memorial Park, where Dean recalled hanging out in 1971 with eight other young people and their cars. Story No. 81 tells how the group cruised around New Holland and behaved themselves on the “nice straight stretch of Jackson Street,” because they knew local police watched the spot. When they moved to the lot where New Holland Ford is now located, they noticed one of their number was missing. When he arrived 10 minutes later, they learned he had been running interference for the rest by driving exceptionally slowly, which attracted police attention and garnered him a ticket.
Dean also recalled a 1974 incident where he was pulled over while cruising “the loop” in downtown Lancaster. “I had a 1961 Dodge Power Wagon,” he said, explaining that his four-wheel drive, heavy-duty truck had a big motor. Dean was pulled over on suspicion of having altered the suspension to make the truck sit higher. “I said, ‘This is factory suspension,’” recalled Dean. “The policeman said, ‘Yeah and I’m Elvis Presley.’” Dean agreed to go to court, and headed to Horning Dodge to secure schematics to prove the height of the truck was unchanged. At court, the judge asked Dean and the officer who had pulled him over to take the schematics outside and look at the truck. “(The officer) could see it was original,” said Dean. “The judge said, ‘Case dismissed.’”

The final story in the book is one that Dean sneaked in as a suprise tribute to his wife, Cathy. He and Cathy met when she became friends with Dean’s sister. Dean liked it when Cathy visited their house, but he was too “bashful” to speak to her. That changed when he learned
Cathy was interested in him. “I heard she wanted to go out with me, and that gave me the courage to ask her out,” he said.
Readers who are interested in a copy of Dean’s book may search for “Dean Graybill” on Facebook or email him at dehemi@comcast.net.

Lasagna Love delivers kindness
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna.
“We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”
Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers.
“People can sign up for a
lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove .org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.”
Mauer noted that Lasagna Love is a great program to volunteer with, because volunteers can set their own schedules. “If you only want to do one lasagna a month, you can do that,” she remarked. “If you only want to make a lasagna one time, you can do it one time and be done. If you want to do four lasagnas a month, one every week, you can do that, too. You can also set up your own delivery radius and drive as far or as close as you want to deliver.” She noted that there are options to make meat or vegetarian lasagnas and that lasagnas can be delivered unbaked or baked.
Lasagna Love began in 2020 when Rhiannon Menn founded the organization in San Diego to spread kindness through home-cooked meals.
Mauer noted that a study of more than 30,000 people who have received lasagnas revealed the impact of the program. “Ninety-eight percent of the recipients said that they were inspired to pay it forward, and 21% had already done so within just a few days of receiving their lasagna,” she noted, adding that they didn’t necessarily make another lasagna, but did something for somebody else. “I really love the ripple effect of this project. It just makes me feel good to participate in this project.” She also noted that quite often people who have been recipients of a lasagna become volunteers working for the organization.
Mauer, who says she enjoys cooking, noted that
people do not have to be professional chefs to make a lasagna. “I follow different Lasagna Love groups on Facebook, and I’ll see there are new people signing up to do it who say they’ve never made a lasagna before in their life,” she stated. “You don’t have to have any real cooking skills. You just have to be able to throw a lasagna together, and you just need to have a desire to want to help people.”
