It is purely coincidental that the name of Joe Yurick’s business - JDog Junk Removal & Hauling - begins with his first initial. “It was started by Jerry Flanagan. His nickname in the Army was JDog,” Yurick explained. Yurick opened his own franchise of JDog because he had served in the military and he wanted to help other veterans. “There are about 250 franchises,” Yurick said. “(At an information meeting), I immediately fell in love with the mission. Right now, I have three (military) generations in the truck.” Truck commander Mark Lukanski served in the Army’s infantry in Operation Desert Storm. Yurick, who titles himself a “vetrepreneur,” achieved the rank of specialist in the Army’s air defense artillery, working on the
Patriot missile system. He served in operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. Giovanni Rivera, the team’s junk removal specialist, is currently serving in the Army National Guard. “No matter who our clientele is, we have someone who can relate to them,” Yurick commented. While the JDog organization is focused on helping veterans with their employment needs, it hires its services to everyone. Yurick takes great pride in the emphasis on repurposing and recycling castoffs. “We do everything we can to keep things out of the landfill,” Yurick said. “Anytime that we pick up items we can repurpose (we save them). We know there are memories associated with them, (and we want to respect them).” Yurick noted that he has contacts at the Coatesville VA, and he gets in touch when something comes up that a See JDog pg 5

Community Food Boxes put in place by It Takes a Village offer free food and toiletries to residents in need. Community members are invited to place donations of nonperishable goods in the boxes.
Volunteer English Program Moves To Online Learning
Like other local nonprofit organizations, It Takes a Village has begun offering new services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who place nonperishable food items in the organization’s Community Food Boxes are now donating additional products, including masks and protective face coverings. “People are putting in masks, diapers and other household products more than ever before,” said Ruby George, a member of the board of directors. “We know that people are using the boxes, and we’ve seen a lot more people making an effort to fill them.” It Takes a Village currently maintains four Community Food Boxes along the Business Route 30 corridor. The Downingtown Train Station box is located on the westbound or Lancaster Avenue/Route 30 side of the station, which is accessible from the parking lot. Another box is located in Dawkins Park in Caln Township, See It Takes A Village pg 3
Even with the stay-at-home and physical distancing orders, the Volunteer English Program (VEP) in Chester County is still providing one-to-one English language classes to adult learners, while continuing to offer services and support to its students and tutors. Many student/tutor pairs are continuing to meet for one-to-one English language learning lessons via telephone, smartphone and computer video conferencing, along with worksheets sent through the mail. In addition, technical training for tutors is available virtually. See English Program pg 4
Ladies Fill Planters In Christiana By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Christiana’s annual Ladies Day went on almost as usual on May 13, with social zdistancing in place for the outdoor event. Normally held the week before Mother’s Day, Ladies Day invites volunteers to join with borough manager Carol Pringle at the Lions Club park in Christiana to fill planters that are then hung throughout the borough until fall or winter frost. This year, the unusually cold weather delayed the event for one week, but 13 volunteers still came out for the morning. “We like to do it before Mother’s Day to have them up for Mother’s Day, but with that cold snap (that) weekend we put if off (a) week,” Pringle said. See Planters pg 7
Christiana Borough manager Carol Pringle organized the annual Ladies Day on May 13, during which volunteers planted flower baskets to be hung throughout the borough.

For 2019-20, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) West Chester - Chester County has supported four Chester County shelters through the county’s Decade to Doorways (D2D) program. Each year, the local AAUW branch selects a recipient for its annual Gateway to Equity Award, which honors an individual, group or organization that has shown by action and philosophy the promotion of the AAUW mission to advance equity for women and girls though advocacy, education and research. D2D was the recipient this year. Through its selection of the D2D program, which aims to prevent and end homelessness in Chester County, AAUW supported county shelters that house women: Community, Youth and Women’s Alliance (CYWA); Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children; Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (DVCCC); and Safe Harbor. At each monthly meeting of AAUW, members contributed household and personal items, monetary donations, gift cards and/or volunteer support to a different shelter throughout AAUW ’s program year,
September through May. Jane Schultz and Fran Pierce, liaisons to Friends Association, arranged for decorating help for the Friends Association’s December gala, in addition to donating items. Liaisons to Safe Harbor were Peggy Staarman and Kim Levan, and Mimi Jones and Elaine Burgess were liaisons to CYWA. In lieu of donated items, the DVCCC requested volunteers to help with its spring gala, a major fundraising event. Eva Kaufman and Cathy Palmquist, DVCCC liaisons, arranged for phone calls, and several mailings to donors, businesses and supporters. They also lined up a Boy Scout troop to help with parking. Unfortunately, the gala had to be canceled due to the pandemic. The branch’s final fundraising event for the program year is its Teapot Fundraiser, where members decorate and fill porcelain teapots with loose change for donation. These funds will be divided between Friends, Safe Harbor, DVCCC and D2D. The funds to D2D will be used for the needs of homeless families that are living in hotels due to the lack of shelter housing. Distribution of these funds will conclude this year’s AAUW support of D2D.

Chester County Community Foundation offers these tips for reopening a business or nonprofit during or in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The top priority should be safety and cleanliness. Owners should perform routine cleaning and disinfection and have hand sanitizer, gloves, face masks, and disinfecting wipes on hand, preferably a 30-day supply. Owners should be supportive of employee needs. They should encourage sick employees - even if they have not confirmed positive for COVID-19 - to stay home, as well as implement flexible sick leave and supportive policies. Owners should maintain social distancing in the workplace. For example, they should move desks and cubicles six feet apart from each other, make communal restrooms into one-person bathrooms, and make hallways one-way traffic only. Owners should limit traffic into the workplace. If possible, they should allow employees to continue working remotely and/or stagger shifts, limit customer traffic into the workplace (for example, by appointment only), and regulate the number of customers entering. For more additional resources, readers may visit https://chescocf.org/ covid-19-normal/ or www.cdc.gov/coronavirus.

Steve (front, right) and Jewel Shivery (front, left) recently purchased Reynolds Funeral and Cremation Services in Quarryville. Celebrating the acquisition were (back, from left) Murray Miller, a Reynolds employee who will stay on at the Quarryville funeral home; Jordan Frey, son-in-law of Steve and Jewel; and Blake Shivery, son of Steve and Jewel. Reynolds Funeral and Cremation Services, 144 E. State St., Quarryville, was recently bought by Steve and Jewel Shivery. The business officially changed hands in April through remote proceedings and was renamed Reynolds and Shivery Funeral Home. The funeral home has been located in Quarryville since its founding in 1898, starting at a different building on East State Street and later moving to the former J. Haines Dickinson mansion. The business was most recently owned by Fred Reynolds, great-grandson of the founder. Reynolds employee Murray Miller, a licensed funeral director, will continue working at the Quarryville business. Steve and Jewel, both licensed funeral directors, now own three funeral homes, the others being located in
Christiana and Paradise. Prior to their purchase, the Christiana and Paradise locations were owned by cousins Carl Brown Jr. and Lee Brown, respectively. The Christiana business is now operated by the Shiverys’ son Blake, who is one of four children, and his wife, Chelcie. Other family members involved in Steve and Jewel’s businesses include son-in-law Jordan Frey and his wife, Grace, and Jordan and Grace’s daughter, Paige Taylor. Steve and Jewel have worked in the funeral services field for quite a while, having purchased Carl’s business in 1994 and Lee’s business in 2007. Steve had worked for Carl throughout his school years, beginning when he was 12. For more information about Reynolds and Shivery Funeral Home, readers may visit www.reynoldsandshivery.com.
It Takes A Village from pg 1 located next to the Coatesville Area High School campus, on Pennsylvania Avenue between North Caln Road and Veterans Drive near the park pavilion. The Abdala Park box is located between Ninth and 10th avenues in Coatesville on the south side of Business Route 30 next to Walgreens. The Ash Park box is located between Third and Fourth avenues between Kersey and Walnut streets in Coatesville. Three additional box locations are in the works for Parkesburg, Gap and Phoenixville. “Our mission statement (on each box) is ‘Take what you need; leave what you can,’” George noted. The community is invited to place donations of food and toiletries in the boxes. Acceptable donations include canned goods, jerky, tuna and chicken salad kits, hand lotion, tissues, diapers and pet food. It is recommended that people donate cans with tab tops that are easy to open for those without access to a can opener. Razors, clothing and frozen food should not be placed in the boxes. It Takes a Village has also recently started a campaign to help people in need directly by asking for donations on its Facebook page. “If someone is really impacted by the coronavirus, they can fill out a form and volunteers will coordinate donations to those people,” George explained. “They will say exactly what they need, (such as) what type of food and what type of cleaning products they need. We will have a coordinator pick up donations. It’s a tangible way of helping.” She said that the organization will also refer those in need to social service agencies if it cannot meet a family’s or an individual’s request. “We only help a family or individual once every two years,” said George. “We’re not in the position to offer long-term solutions. We are a bridge to get people past this point of extreme need.” It Takes a Village has also
With the implementing of social distancing policies, many people are spending much of their time at home. While staying at home is necessary, bodies and minds still need exercise, and people should continue practicing selfcare within the framework of their home. Five ways to keep busy and active while at home are offered by TopCashBack.com. They include exercising, doing something relaxing, preparing healthy and fresh meals before turning to nonperishable items, maintaining a healthy routine, and keeping one’s mind active. Gym closures do not mean people have to sacrifice their gains. There are plenty of exercises that can be done from the comfort of one’s home and that require minimal equipment or none at all. Gym members should see if their gym is offering free virtual classes. Individuals can check out YouTube for videos on everything from Pilates and yoga to strength training. Not only can individuals find workout routines from professional trainers to keep them
moving and motivated, but these online routines may also be free. For individuals who can still go outside, nothing beats a walk as long as one can avoid crowds. Whether someone wants to bingewatch their favorite show or is constantly checking the news, everyone should try to balance their screen time with other activities. While staying informed is important, people should remember not to overdo it. People should focus on things that help them relax, like reading a book, knitting, doing crafts, or baking. It is important to take breaks, disconnect, and simply relax. In the midst of all the chaos, many people have stocked up on nonperishable items like canned goods. Before turning to these goods, people should make sure they incorporate fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods into their meals. Preparing fresh meals and freezing them is a great way to ensure one’s health does not get compromised. It can also add some diversity to meals, which people may need if they are at
home for an extended period of time. While individuals may not be able to stick to their normal routine - like commuting to work, going to the gym, and meeting friends for coffee - they can create a new routine at home which includes alternatives to the norm. As tempting as it is to stay in bed and work in pajamas, it may not be a good idea. It is important to get up and go on about the day as usual. Get up, get dressed, establish meal times, and remember to take breaks to walk around the home. When work is done for the day, people are encouraged to schedule a virtual coffee date with their friends. Alongside staying physically active, keeping mentally active is important, too. Individuals should consider keeping their mind switched on by watching quiz-based programs or doing puzzles. People should challenge themselves to keep their mind distracted, which is important for those who may be home alone or are struggling to keep busy.

been awarding grants to people who have been affected by coronavirus. “They tell us what their need is, and we can provide a one-time financial grant between $50 and $300 per person,” George explained. “ We have donated about $10,000 in the past two months.” George encourages people to join the organization’s Facebook group at www.facebook.com/ groups/ittakesavillagecc to keep informed of ways to help and donate. “(People can) join the Facebook group and participate by liking and sharing and commenting on things,” she stated. “The more people we have (join the effort), the more people we can help.” The organization is also in need of financial support to help construct the new food boxes. “Part of our funding goals for 2020 was to get more boxes up and find locations,” said George. “We need money to put them together and maintain them.” For more information about the boxes and the organization, readers may visit www.ittakesa villagecc.org/food-boxes or email admin@ittakesavillagecc.org.

New Coalition Creates Masks The Masks Now Coalition is a grassroots movement of volunteers and their groups, led by 19 organizers directing more than 1,000 volunteers, who banded together in response to the urgent national shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE) brought on by the novel coronavirus outbreak. The Masks Now Coalition has volunteers in every state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico ready to answer the call from over 125 hospitals in 28 states which have made public appeals for home sewn masks that meet the CDC’s emergency guidelines
because they are facing a shortage or they expect to soon. The Masks Now Coalition matches the hospital requests to the volunteers in their local areas. The coalition has also created a standard design for distributed production of threelayer homemade masks. The coalition’s three-layer masks are not made for children. Readers can text “masks” to 50409 for more information. Readers may also visit www.masksnow.org for information about volunteering and about receiving donations for a facility.

our third workshop that we’ve done in the past five weeks to help tutors become adept at virtual teaching,” Potrako noted. “It was a concentrated effort to get used to Zoom. We felt it was our responsibility to present to our tutors new ways of creating lessons and English language learning though all this technology.” The March training for tutors was done via Zoom, and in April, the organization moved its “Peer to Peer” workshops online. The workshops, normally held in person several times a year, focus on current trends or topics of interest to tutors. More than 40 people attended the virtual workshops. Potrako noted that the student/tutor pairs have adapted quickly to Zoom and frequently use the screen sharing feature. Students and tutors receive companion textbooks, so those can also be referenced during a Zoom call. “The other beauty of Zoom is the face-to-face contact,” she said. “You are not losing that relationship connection. You are getting a better sense of listening and the visual you need to correct someone’s language, which is different from a phone (session).” Potrako added that students seem even more determined to learn English during this time. “It’s brought out a creative spirit,” she said, noting that staff members also meet via Zoom. “We are impressed by all the things that our students are doing and still making time for their tutors even if they are managing two or three children at home and are still working. It’s remarkable.” For more information about VEP, including how to become a volunteer tutor, readers may email volunteer.english@ volunteerenglish.org or visit www.volunteerenglish.org.

According to Terri Potrako, VEP executive director, the organization already had plans in place that could enable staff members to work remotely. “We had a continuity plan, which is more on the lines of what a business would anticipate. It could be anything from power outages to a natural disaster,” she stated. “No one expected a pandemic, but we had a structure in place, and we were building up the ability for our staff to work remotely. We had our own laptops and phone system and database secured via a web platform.” Even before the pandemic, VEP was offering remote services for its students as well. “Traditionally, over 34 years, VEP mostly had adult immigrants come to the office, be interviewed, take tests and meet their tutors in a physical location,” Potrako explained. “Over the last several years, we needed to be mobile because the adult learners don’t always have cars and they are trying to fit in learning English in between life’s demands. Instead of people coming to West Chester, we were going out to Coatesville and Phoenixville - anywhere there was need. We called it ‘ VEP Without Walls.’” She said that the VEP staff members and tutors immediately stepped into action when the office doors closed. “We adapted overnight. We physically stopped meeting on March 14, and on March 15 we were still tutoring,” Potrako pointed out. “We had tutors at first meet outside with distancing. Then, when the restrictions really came into play, they (tutored) by telephone and sent their students things by mail.” Currently, student/tutor pairs meet via Zoom. Yurick noted that the business offers contact-free collection when clients are able to take their items outside for pickup. When team members need to enter clients’ homes or other buildings, the workers wear personal protective equipment, including masks and booties. Team members are also careful about sorting through items before they are placed in the trailer. Yurick related that at the beginning of May, his JDog team emptied the attic of a couple that

Tips For Saving Money Offered While many restaurants and local eateries have closed their doors for dine-in service, takeout and delivery have become the new norm for many. Seven tips to help make cravings a little easier on the budget are offered. Customers are encouraged to order takeout or delivery strategically so that they have leftovers for another meal, such as the next day’s lunch or another night’s dinner. Anything that does not get eaten can simply be frozen for later. Whether it is multiple portions or a large catering tray, keeping these meals for another time will save money for future dates and will also support local businesses. In a digital-driven world, social media may be the first spot people check for updates on anything and everything. Customers should be sure to follow their favorite eateries on social media to see if
they post special promotions and deals. If there are no specials online, individuals should call and ask the restaurant. Individuals who have food delivered to their home on a regular basis should consider signing up for a subscription service like Postmates Unlimited. For a set price per month or annually, customers will receive free delivery on all orders over the set minimum. Aside from free delivery, members will also avoid blitz pricing at peak hours and gain exclusive access to giveaways, special offers, and events. Customers can also save money by bundling coupons, deals, and cashback to maximize savings while ordering from eateries. Discounts may be available for those who are new to online delivery services. People can stretch their money a little further by pur-
chasing a discounted gift card for their favorite restaurant. They may save 10% to 20% by purchasing someone’s unwanted gift card from sites like Raise. Individuals can stack the savings by purchasing discounted gift cards through rebate websites and use a cashback credit card to knock a higher percentage off the cost. Major foodies are encouraged to look for credit cards that will earn them cash back at restaurants. Cards can earn cash back without having to take any extra steps except using the card. To avoid paying a delivery fee, individuals should see if their local restaurant offers contactless curbside pickup. Typically, orders are placed over the phone, customers call when they are ready to pick up their food at the restaurant, and staff will leave the orders outside for the customers.

Planters from pg 1 Balancing the metal framework baskets on top of overturned buckets, volunteers lined them with cocoa mats and filled them with mulch. Each planter then received three “bubblegum” color petunias. “It didn’t take us long. Within an hour, we were done,” Pringle said. A total of 148 plants in 38 finished planters were hung by the borough’s public works department on light poles throughout town. Public works employees will water the planters every other day. Pringle planted additional petunias at the Christiana Borough garage and under the sign at the Borough Hall. According to Pringle, the tradition of placing flower-filled planters around town was started many years ago by Christiana resident Doris Groff, who did the work on her own. Around the time Pringle became borough manager four years ago, Groff wanted to retire from the job, and Pringle took over the project. Pringle had the idea to transform the project into Ladies Day in order to make the planting go faster and at the same time provide a social opportunity for local ladies who were willing to help. After they had finished planting the petunias, the ladies enjoyed refreshments from Buckwheat’s Coffee & Such food truck at the park. To finish out the day, each volunteer was given a flower to take home as a thank you for her efforts. This year, participants were careful to observe social distancing guidelines. “All the pots were spread out six feet apart and we all had masks on and of course we all had gloves on already because we were playing in the dirt,” Pringle said. “It’s always a nice day. We enjoyed the day; we had a nice time of fellowship together and a few laughs.”

Brandywine Hospital-Tower Health has once again been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR) for both the hospital site in Coatesville and the hospital’s Imaging Center in Downingtown. The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. In order to receive this distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of their lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs. Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography scans and appropriate follow-up
care significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults ages 55 to 80 who have a 30 pack per year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. The ACR, founded in 1924, devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. Located in Chester County and a member of Tower Health, Brandywine Hospital is a nonprofit, 171-bed acute-care hospital with private rooms that has been providing care in the community for more than 100 years. The hospital’s key services include cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery; emergency medicine;
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently announced that the Department of Homeland Security has postponed the
enforcement date for REAL ID from Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, to Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, in response to COVID-19 and the national emergency declaration.
Brandywine Hospital has earned the Lung Cancer Screening Center Designation from the American College of Radiology. orthopedics; behavioral health for adults and older adults; general and robotic surgery; specialized care for eating disorders; and outpatient services, including radiology/women’s imaging, laboratory, cardiopulmonary, occupational, physical and speech therapy, primary care and wound care. Fully accredited by The Joint
Commission, Brandywine Hospital is also an accredited Chest Pain Center by the American Academy of Cardiology and the recipient of The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for excellence in acute myocardial infarction, hip replacement, knee replacement, stroke and wound care. For more information, readers may visit www.brandywine.towerhealth.org.
PennDOT closed all driver and photo license centers on March 16 and paused REAL ID issuance in the state out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of public health. The date when centers will reopen has yet to be determined. PennDOT also sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, requesting that the agency consider extending the Oct. 1 REAL ID enforcement deadline. REAL ID is a federal law that affects how states issue driver’s licenses and ID cards if they are going to be acceptable for federal purposes. A federally-acceptable form of identification, whether it is a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a military ID, or another form of
identification, must now be used on and after Oct. 1, 2021, as identification to board a commercial flight or visit a secure federal building that requires a federally acceptable form of identification ID for access. REAL ID is optional in Pennsylvania. There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID. PennDOT will continue to offer standard-issue driver’s licenses and photo IDs once issuance has resumed. More information about document requirements, including a printable document checklist, can be found on the Document Check page of the PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services website. Customers may complete various transactions and access multiple resources via www.dmv.pa.gov. Driver and vehicle online services are available 24/7 and include driver’s license, photo ID, and vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters; ability to pay driver license or vehicle insurance restoration fee; driver license and photo ID duplicates; and driver exam scheduling.
