OIC Seeks Volunteer Tutors BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Adult Tutoring Program of Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking volunteer tutors to help individuals from other countries with their English language skills. “There is an increasing number of
men and women from all over the world who are choosing to make Chester County their home. They come in search of a better, often safer, life for themselves and their families,” said Robin Chiavetta, assistant program coordinator. “The need for volunteer tutors is great, as we have a long waiting list of students.” See Volunteer Tutors pg 5
Emily Reid helped organize Atglen Beautification Volunteers (from left) Tara Wheeler, Emily Reid and Day, which included planting flowers. Joe Wheeler plant flowers at Atglen Borough Hall.
Flowers Added To Atglen’s Landscape he landscape around the borough hall in Atglen is now a little brighter thanks to the efforts of volunteers who planted flowers around the building, as well as in large flowerpots located along Main Street. The event was part of Atglen Park and Recreation Commission’s annual Atglen Beautification Day held on May 21. According to commission member Tara Wheeler, who was accompanied to the event by her husband Joe, varieties planted in the flower beds and the pots included geraniums, impatiens, pansies and, new this year, verbenas. Emily Reid, park and recreation commission chairperson, said that the effort has taken place annually for the past six or seven years, including during the pandemic. “We are hoping to keep growing this
drainage holes and they (added) rocks, dirt and fertilizer to fill it up for us. Then, we planted (flowers in) them.” She added that the borough hall is also the site of a book sharing box, which residents can visit to take a book or share a book. There is also a park bench at the building. The borough received the bench through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, which organized the distribution of garden benches to communities through Giant Food Store’s “Bags to Benches” initiative. “Last year, we got a bench from the Keep America Beautiful program. It is completely made of recycled plastic bags,” Reid said. Atglen Borough Hall is located at 120 Main St. For additional information about the borough, including upcoming events, visit www.atglen.org or search for “Atglen Borough” on Facebook.

It’s fun and it looks great,” she said. “We only have two intersections here in Atglen, and we want them to look nice to people passing through.” Prior to planting, the flower beds were mulched by members of the borough’s utility works crew. “The borough council approved our purchase of the flowers and the flowerpots,” noted Reid. “We have more flowerpots on order so that we can (place them) on both sides of the street. Eventually, we want to (add) more in front of Atglen Public Library.” The giant flowerpots were purchased last spring from Perfect Pots in Lancaster. “We have partnered with them to order (additional) pots so we can keep getting the same ones, so they are uniform,” said Reid. “When they delivered them, they did a mesh on the bottom to cover the

Among the students currently being tutored by OIC volunteers are two women from Ukraine. “One has been in the country a little while, but her husband had to stay (in Ukraine). She and her children were able to escape. Fortunately, she has a sister here and they were able to come here,” Chiavetta said. “The other one has an adult son who is still there. He had to stay to fight. We found a tutor who is Ukrainian and wants to work with (the mother).” “As the situation there continues, we expect to see many more like them,” Chiavetta added. A four-year college degree is required to tutor, but teaching experience is not needed. The training is offered online through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Tutors are asked to meet
with their student three hours each week, usually in two 90-minute sessions. Pairs can meet in person at local libraries or other mutually convenient locations such as a coffee shop or the cafe section of a grocery store. They may also choose to meet virtually over Zoom, FaceTime or other online platforms. “We still have some tutors who are more comfortable (meeting online), or because of logistics, it works better. (Meeting virtually) was a bonus that came out of the pandemic,” Chiavetta said. “We have a lot of students who don’t have cars or can’t get rides. It’s nice for them to still have a tutor and not to worry about transportation.” Chester County OIC provides free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment and economic self-

sufficiency. Students come from countries such as Brazil, Afghanistan, Egypt and Mexico. “Phil is working with Lucia. She is from Venezuela and wants to get a better job and become a U.S. citizen. Mary works with Alex, who was a lawyer in Brazil and wants to learn English and continue his career. Katie is helping Kim, a stay-at-home mom who wants to learn English so she can feel more confident talking to other parents and teachers at her children’s school,” said Chiavetta. “Our students’ stories are all different, with one thing in common - their desire to learn English and thrive in their new community.” For more information about the program, including how to become a volunteer tutor, visit www.ccoic.org, call the Adult Tutoring Program office at 610344-4013 or contact Debbie Rikess, program coordinator, at drikess@cc-oic.org.

Summer Reading Program, which will run from Monday, June 13, through Monday, Aug. 15, by picking up a reading packet at the library. “ We plan to hand out pocket folders the first week of June,” said Tom Knecht, library director. “Each folder will have a sheet to document reading progress, coloring pages, puzzles and activity sheets. A small weekly prize will be given out when the child returns with their progress sheet. At the end of the program, we will have an ice cream party in the pavilion at the park.” The Summer Reading Program will also feature weekly activities, including four talks presented by Chester County Park Rangers. All ranger-led programs will begin at 2 p.m. and will take place in the Minch Park pavilion, which is located next to the library. The first talk will take place on Wednesday, June 1. The program will be “Pennsylvania Mammals.” “Introduction to Disc Golf” will be presented on Wednesday, June 22.
day, July 27, during which children will make crafty creatures using materials found in nature. The final ranger-led program will be “Building a Natural Bird Feeder” on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Attendees will learn how to build a bird feeder using pinecones and peanut butter. A four-week Science Exploration Program will be offered on select Tuesdays in July and August. Each program will meet at the Minch Park pavilion from 10 to 11 a.m. The theme on July 12 will be “Keeping Our Environment Clean.” During the program, children will play a recycling game and create posters. The theme on July 19 will be “ Water, Water, Everywhere.” Children will take part in an interactive story, where they will observe and experience the impacts of water quality. The theme on Aug. 2 will be
“Saving the Soil.” Youths will meet live composting worms as they learn about soil, and they will conduct several activities to visualize the impacts of erosion. Alumni Association Holds Annual Gathering The Colerain Alumni Association met recently to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The organization was founded in 1923 to allow graduates of the Colerain High School in Kirkwood and later Solanco High School to meet and reminisce. Members gather annually at the Bart Township Fire Company on a Saturday evening in April for dinner and fellowship. The gathering includes a meal and a program, which especially honors those who graduated 50 years earlier. The recent event was the 97th annual, as the group skipped one year due to World War II and the years 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19. This year, the earliest class represented was the Class of 1951, from which Howard Howett attended, and the Class of 1964 had the most class members present. Bruce Gross, Class of 1964, from Mont Alto was honored for traveling the farthest distance. Ken Walton was elected president for the next year, and Jeff McCardell served as master of ceremonies for the social period. Anyone who graduated from Colerain schools or from Solanco as a Colerain Township resident is welcome to attend future events. To be added to the invitation mailing list or for more information, email Judy Greenleaf at cmgjag@epix.net or call 717-529-2723.
