Chester County team will rappel for a cause

Despite her fear of heights and visual impairment, Chester County resident Natanya Sortland took part in Eye Drop 2021, a fundraiser for VisionCorps where participants rappel 10 stories down from the

roof of the Holiday Inn in downtown Lancaster to raise funds for the organization. In 2022, Sortland took the plunge again, this time with Christina Wagoner from the United Way of Chester County.

For Eye Drop 2023, set for Friday, June 9, Sortland has gathered a team of Chester County residents who will join her to raise funds for and awareness of VisionCorps and its effort to help the blind and visually impaired. “I have an eight-person team this year, (so) there will be nine people from Chester County,” said Sortland.

Among the participants will be a woman from the Mid-Atlantic Blind Golf Association, a visually impaired Paralympian, members of the Coventry Lions Club and Chris Saello, president and CEO of the United Way of Chester County, as well as Alex Becker, lead pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Malvern. “I am so ready. I’m excited,” said Becker. “I actually used to go rappelling when I was a kid, but I haven’t really since I have been an adult. I am excited to jump back in.”

Clothing ministry continues to bless the community

Nearly one year ago, Limeville’s Blessings, a store that offers free clothing, household items, children’s toys and more, opened at Limeville United Methodist Church. Since then, the church ministry has had a great impact in the community.

“July 16 will be our one-year anniversary,” said church member Melanie Shivery, store coordinator. “We helped 264 families in 2022, and so far this year we have directly helped 268 families.”

Because of the store’s success,

Shivery has been able to share with other local organizations in need. “We have been blessed with an abundance of donations from the outside community and consignment shops,” she reported.

Limeville’s Blessings offers clothing for men, women and children from newborn up to teen sizes; an assortment of shoes in all sizes; clothes for men and women that are suitable for a job interview; baby equipment, including car seats; household goods like blankets, towels and sheets; and personal care items.

“I have been able to go to other clothing banks and drop off clothes, help Octorara with their shoe drive and I donated 22 prom

Anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. Visitors can also be put on the church’s prayer list.

RRR to host Summer Field Day

“This is the open house of our hobby,” said Alex Van Patten, public information officer with Red Rose Repeater Association (RRR), a local organization that will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day. “It’s our chance to show people who have no or limited exposure to this hobby what it’s all about,” stated Van Patten.

This year’s event, known to RRR members as “Summer Field Day,” will take place on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, 750 E. King St., Lancaster. This

event is open to the public, and the club particularly recommends stopping by on Saturday between 2 and 8 p.m. The event will close by 2 p.m. on Sunday.

RRR president Ralph Hess noted that antennae setup will be held on Saturday between 8 and 9 a.m. “There are a lot of new hams who want to see that,” said Hess. “Ham” is another term for amateur radio. The hobby invites interested persons to experiment with electronics and communications techniques. Hams also provide a free public service to communities during a disaster or emergency - all without needing a cellphone or the internet.

Families are asked to come once a month for free items unless there are extenuating circumstances. “I just had a dad get full custody of his children, and he needed a little bit of everything,” said Shivery, adding, “I have been so blessed to be here. It really opens your eyes. People are going through

a lot. A family was living in the hotel, and I was able to get toys for their kids.”

The store is located at the church but has its own entrance. “I tried to maximize the space, and I am still working on it. I just ordered another shelf, so the jeans will not be in bins anymore,” Shivery noted. “We had to trade our minivan for a truck because of the abundance of donations. I am here twice a week for three to four hours sorting.”

Those who visit the store are not required to join the church or make a donation, but they are welcome to do so

if they wish. “If you want to come to church, you are welcome, but you don’t have to do anything,” Shivery said, adding, “I have built such personal relationships with the people who come here. It’s like I gained a whole extra family by being here.”

The success of the ministry is evident from the numerous letters of gratitude received from clients. One mother wrote, “The Blessings Store helped my daughter and grandkids at Christmas. Without the help of the Blessings Store, my grandkids wouldn’t have had much of a Christmas.”

Another person wrote, “(I am) truly grateful for Limeville’s Blessings and all the people who put their time and love into this well organized, amazing heartful place.”

Limeville’s Blessings is located at 5783 Limeville Road, Gap. The store is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on the last Thursday of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations for the store are accepted during operating hours or by appointment. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/Limevilles BlessingsStore.

Sortland said she will continue to participate in Eye Drop to make more people in Chester County aware of how she personally benefited from the services that the organization provides, including training individuals on how to use a cane to navigate obstacles both at home and in the community.

“I am more upset to have people not get the services they need than I am going over a building,” she said, noting that the experience is

still frightening. “Inside, I am saying, ‘Smile. Don’t look terrified.’”

Sortland spends time speaking at various churches and organizations promoting VisionCorps. “Natanya is our most effective ambassador and has done wonderful things for us being a spokesperson for the organization,” noted Carol Gifford, VisionCorps community relations specialist.

“When you are visually

impaired, one of the first things you deal with is feeling useless,” Sortland shared. “I have a mission, and I am grateful to VisionCorps for giving me one.”

During Eye Drop, Sortland will once again be dressed as Lady Liberty. “VisionCorps has given me my freedom, life and liberty back,” she said.

“My goal is to show people we can be golfers, Paralympians and we can climb down buildings. We want the world to know that we are capable of just about anything. That is what VisionCorps has inspired me to do.”

Eye Drop 2023 will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., Lancaster. As part of the fundraiser, which is in its fourth year, individuals commit to raising $1,000 to go over the edge of the Holiday Inn. This year’s goal is to raise $175,000.

Proceeds from Eye Drop 2023 will support VisionCorps services, including the education and prevention of blindness and rehabilitation and employment for individuals with impaired vision. Summer Field Day

“Thaddeus Stevens is a perfect spot (to hold field day),” noted Van Patten. “People will have their radio stations set up, and the focus is to contact other clubs across the country doing the same thing. We hope to talk to a couple hundred (individuals) or more.”

This is the 90th year hams have used field day to demonstrate radio’s ability to create reliable communications independent of commercial networks from almost anywhere. Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary radio stations in public locations during field day to showcase the science

and skill of amateur radio.

Van Patten pointed out that in addition to contacting other clubs in the U.S., attempts will be made to contact clubs in other countries and even hams in outer space.

“We also hope to utilize the space station,” he said, noting that there is a radio aboard and that amateurs are encouraged to use the facility as a relay point. “Last year, an astronaut was participating in field day from the space station,” he added. Although RRR was not able to make contact, many clubs did. “(The astronaut) was very busy handing out contacts the whole weekend nonstop,” said

The 2023 Town Tours and Village Walks program, “Our Agricultural Heritage,” will kick off at the West Chester United Methodist Church, 129 S. High St., on Thursday, June 8.

The program, now in its 29th year, offers residents and visitors the opportunity to explore Chester County’s history, architecture, and cultural heritage through a

series of lectures and strolls on Thursday evenings from June 8 to Aug. 17.

The June 8 kickoff event will showcase the remnants of West Chester’s Quaker farms, as well as some of the agribusinesses that followed, including ESCO, United Dairy, Yearsley’s, and the Fruit Growers. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for

Van Patten. “The equipment to do that is very basic,” he added. “For less than $30, you can build an antenna to contact the space station.”

In 2019, more than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in field day. “Last year, (there were even) more because the hobby is growing every year,” said Van Patten. “(There are) more than 770,000 hams (nationwide) now, and there are 28,000 in Pennsylvania alone.” Hess noted that hams range in age from as young as 7 to 102. “The hobby has changed in the last five years and really (become) attainable for a number of people,” said

Van Patten. “The entry point to get involved and have a radio is less than $50.” For more information about field day or amateur radio, visit www.w3rrr.org or visit www.arrl.org.

Flag football just for fun

Teresa Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit down, but by the end of the season, he was playing the whole game.”

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.

Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.”

Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the team members on cheers, and they cheer for the flag football teams and then perform during a break between games and at the end of the game. Wiedemer has connected with the World Cup Jupiter special needs cheering team, which practices at Spooky Nook, for a visit with the Challenger team. “The (World Cup Jupiter cheerleaders) will come and do their routine,” said Wiedemer, who is also working to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders to a game to do a clinic with the cheer team. “I try to have guests each week,” said Wiedemer, who is also in touch with an internationally known magician from Philadelphia about a guest appearance.

Wiedemer first got involved in the program about seven years ago, noting

A sign of the times

Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township

J & S Window Repair LLC 4000 E. Newport Road, Gordonville, PA Were just a phone call away 717-715-7293 jswindowr4000@emypeople.net

Whether traveling west from Philadelphia or north from New Castle, immigrants and visitors alike needed to pause for rest and meals on the long journey. Enterprising individuals inclined toward serving those travelers lost no time in providing accommodation. Taverns and inns served distinct social classes, from no more than a tiny room where three strangers might have to sleep in the same bed to establishments that were lavish and elaborate for the times and were meant for the upper ranks of society. With a blacksmith and stables handy, they offered animal care as well and could be found every few miles along the major routes.

Benjamin West, Pennsylvania son of an innkeeper, became a noted portrait painter in the 1700s, but began his career painting signs. His work appeared on tavern signs in Philadelphia and westward. Among them, in 1771, was that of the Three Crowns, a noted hostelry that stood near White Horse on the King’s Highway in Salisbury Township.

When the Revolutionary

War began, the Three Crowns signboard became a prime target of hostile bullets from the Continental Army. One day, the Tory proprietor came close to sharing the bullets. Fearing a more serious fate, the tavern keeper, a frugal man, had the back side of the sign repainted to signify his loyalty to the fledgling national effort.

Traditional lore claims that when one or the other warring side was nearing, the owner just turned the sign over and hosted whichever thirsty army marched by. Both sides of the Three Crowns/Waterloo Tavern signboard feature musketfired bullet holes along with the lettering.

Whether the Tory owner moved away when the British lost the war is not known. However, the Three Crowns/Waterloo sign was apparently removed from the tavern in White Horse in 1816. It showed up a few miles east of that village at the Waterloo Tavern, kept by a relative of the old landlord.

The Waterloo Tavern was originally the Bull’s Head; its owner was a former Revolutionary officer. To appeal to the Patriot side and perhaps

to honor the downfall of Napoleon, those three crowns were hidden from view permanently behind the newly painted Waterloo Tavern.

Little more is known about this two-sided sign. Not until 1890 does it show up in records again. Research by Brett Snyder, vice president of the historical society, has discovered that eventually the sign was acquired by W.U. Hensel, along with the Hat Inn and Lion Hotel 1812 signs. In 1947, it was sold to Stevens’ House in Lancaster, where it was displayed until 1960 when that hotel closed. All three signs then graced the wall of a motel on Oregon Pike until it closed in 1989. Snyder said, “After that, the trail runs cold.”

Only the keen eye of Randy Good of White Horse saved the Hat Inn sign. He found it, ready for the trash collector, on a property near Lesal Road. Nothing has been discovered of the Lion’s Hotel sign so far. We continue to research these signs.

Select information was provided by Alice Morse Earle’s 1900 book “Stagecoach and TavernDays”andSnyder.

Ways to celebrate Father’s Day

Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. There are many memorable ways to celebrate Dad this Father’s Day.

One idea is to take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last

decade or more, as various companies have made it easier than ever for individuals to trace their family histories. If Dad is interested in genealogy, Mom and the kids can work together to create a virtual tour through that history. The history can be presented as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting

things learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up. Another idea is to take to the great outdoors, weather permitting. The day can be planned around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an

avid fisherman, a family outing can be booked on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and leave the navigating to someone else. If Dad loves being in natural settings, the family can camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, the family can take him out to a ballgame. For fathers who love food, a meal served by a private chef can make for a memorable

Father’s Day. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning. After identifying Dad’s favorite dish, families can look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine. Some Dads may just want

to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, a fun and adventurous activity for the whole family can be booked. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend may fit the bill. There is no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad will not soon forget.

Giant to offer virtual cooking classes

The Giant Company team of dietitians will offer a variety of free, virtual nutrition classes in June, which is National Dairy Month. The dietitians will highlight the nutrition benefits dairy offers, as well as share simple recipe ideas to celebrate the season.

“Summer Entertaining” will be offered on Thursday, June 8, at noon. Home cooks will learn to prepare Buffalo ranch chicken stuffed cucumber boats.

A “Wellbeing Workshop” will be featured on Wednesday, June 14, at 8 p.m. Participants will explore the connection between dairy and weight management.

“Table Talk” will be offered on June 14 and Wednesdays, June 21 and 28, at noon. Attendees will learn about what dairy has to offer from industry experts.

Home cooks will prepare banana split foil packets for Father’s Day during the “Mini Chef Morning” class on Saturday, June 17, at 10 a.m.

A new series called “Meal Solution Mondays” will be offered in June on Mondays at noon. The classes will offer easy and affordable meal solutions, like chickpea veggie

burgers and grilled steak and corn salad.

At noon every Tuesday in June, the dietitians will have tips, tricks and recipe inspiration for the summer produce season in the “Produce Spotlight” class. Participants will learn how easy it is to make refrigerator pickled beets and whip up Vidalia onion dressing using seasonal fruits and veggies.

Home cooks will learn how to make quick and seasonal dishes each Thursday at noon as part of the “Summer Entertaining” class. On the last two Thursdays, the dietitians will gear up for 4th of July celebrations with red, white and blue salsa and mini patriotic cheesecakes.

Visit www.giantfoodstores .com/wellness or www.martins foods.com/wellness for recipe inspiration and resources. There is also a link to preregister for all virtual classes, including a complete listing of classes and ingredients needed for each class. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and state and attend the entire class.
