Octorara to offer youth football camp
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Drills,
learning the fundamentals and flag football games will be some of the activities featured during a youth football camp being offered from Tuesday, June 27, through Thursday June 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. The camp, which is open to youngsters ages 6 to 14, will be led by high school football coach Ed Smith with help from alumni and current members of the Octorara Braves football team.
Each session will begin with a warmup, followed by drills and then end with a mini game of flag football.
“We will run it like a regular practice,” Smith explained. “We will do a stretching routine, I will say a quick word to them about what we are looking for - having fun, being excited and hustling - and we will break into different age groups for fundamental drills and teaching the different positions.”
Smith noted that some youths are sent to camp because their parents want them to stay active during the summer, while other campers are eager to learn about the sport and have a chance to play. “It’s a good mix. We have some kids who love football, and they are really excited about it. (For the others), we try to get them to fall in love with the game and teach them the good things about the game,” Smith said, noting that the camp is open to youths from all area school districts, not just Octorara.
Attendees should bring water bottles to camp, and they may wear cleats if they have them, but they are not required. “We take plenty of water breaks,” Smith said, noting that youths will be given an ice cream treat or a popsicle on the last day of camp.
Smith said that the high school football players are eager to teach the younger students what they know about the game. “The whole goal is to get these kids involved early. They really look up to the high
Chester County commissioners award grants
The Chester County commissioners approved the awarding of $2.5 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants on May 25 at the commissioners’ public meeting. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations.
The commitment of county funds will help leverage an additional $15 million of non-county funds. A total of 15 grants will be awarded this year.
The City of Coatesville will receive $100,000 for the first phase of planned improvements at Ash Park, including a rehabilitated main entrance; a gathering space and event area; a recirculating splashpad to replace the nonfunctional swimming pools; a pavilion with cooling station; native plants/landscaping; and ADA-accessible site access, picnic tables and restroom.
East Bradford Township will receive $250,000 to construct the first phase of the Plum Run Trail on a portion of the township-owned 48-acre Plum Run Preserve. It will include a 1,300-linear-foot, 8-footwide universally accessible multiuse asphalt trail; an 11-car public parking lot; and a 2,520-square-foot outdoor heritage center/trailhead at the western terminus of the trail located adjacent to the historic Strode’s Barn.
school football players like they are superheroes,” Smith shared. “We are starting to see some of the high school kids that went through this camp when they were 8 years old (play high school football). (Since) they went through the camp, they know what kind of impact they can have on other kids.”
Per Smith’s direction, every Octorara football player is required
to take part in community service projects. For example, team members recently read to youngsters during Octorara’s Literacy Under the Lights program. “We are starting to see the benefits of the football culture in Octorara. I really believe in investing in our community and our youth,” Smith stated.
The high school football team is active year-round. The players are
currently working out and lifting weights before football camp begins in August. “We are already preparing for the upcoming season. For these three days (of camp), we are taking a break to give back and invest in our youth,” Smith said.
For more information about the youth football camp and to register, visit www.octorarafootball.org. Walk-ins will also be welcome.
East Coventry Township will receive $50,000 for the acquisition of 1.7 acres to add to its 160-acre publicly accessible Nature Preserve.
East Fallowfield Township will receive $52,946 for the construction of a 36-foot ADA-accessible gazebo at its Community Park to serve as an outdoor community gathering space and allow for outdoor performances and concert events.

A sign of the times
Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township
Whether traveling west from Philadelphia or north from New Castle, immigrants and visitors alike needed to pause for rest and meals on the long journey. Enterprising individuals inclined toward serving those travelers lost no time in providing accommodation. Taverns and inns served distinct social classes, from no more than a tiny room where three strangers might have to sleep in the same bed to establishments that were lavish and elaborate for the times and were meant for the upper ranks of society. With a blacksmith and stables handy, they offered animal care as well and could be found every few miles along the major routes.
Benjamin West, Pennsylvania son of an innkeeper, became a noted portrait painter in the 1700s, but began his career painting signs. His work appeared on tavern signs in Philadelphia and westward. Among them, in 1771, was that of the Three Crowns, a noted hostelry that stood near White Horse on the King’s Highway in Salisbury Township.
When the Revolutionary War began, the Three Crowns signboard became a prime target of hostile bullets from the Continental Army. One day, the Tory proprietor came close to sharing the bullets. Fearing a more serious fate, the tavern keeper, a frugal man, had the back side of the sign repainted to signify his loyalty to the fledgling national effort. Traditional lore claims that when one or
the other warring side was nearing, the owner just turned the sign over and hosted whichever thirsty army marched by. Both sides of the Three Crowns/Waterloo Tavern signboard feature musketfired bullet holes along with the lettering.
Whether the Tory owner moved away when the British lost the war is not

OAK SHADE TREE SERVICE
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Each Tuesday, 15 men ranging in age from 19 to 75 gather at Caring Hearts, one of several centers in Lancaster County that serve members of the Plain community. On Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the converted barn where the group meets hums with activity.
According to Chris Glick, who, along with Sarah Glick, oversees Caring Hearts on those days, the men who participate spend time in worship,
singing hymns, and hearing a Bible story. Work time includes counting out 100 screws and then transferring them to boxes.
“We pack Tapcon screws for hardware stores and screws and small bolts in assortments,” said Chris, who noted the men also put washers on bolts and lags for swing set shops. At 11 a.m., the group stops for lunch, followed by some game time, which often includes cornhole. Work starts again at 1 p.m., and another break is offered at 1:30 p.m. “(The men) usually play a memory game then, which is good for the mind,” said Chris.
Caring Hearts and the other centers - Special Hearts Circle, Sunbeam, Sunny Sunbeam, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - together give the more than 100 adults with special needs who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Chris relayed that some of the men at Caring Hearts come from as far away as Holtwood and Maryland, and one comes from Lebanon.
To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly
bring-something, buysomething auction. The 17th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 3, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Highlights of this year’s auction will include crafts, tools, sheds, and outdoor furniture. A 26-by-28foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, and a flag croquet set. Quilts will be sold at 4 p.m., and carriages, swing sets, and sheds will be sold beginning at 6 p.m.
Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies

Chris first became involved with Caring Hearts around 2012, serving as a substitute before taking over in late 2019. “I enjoy it,” he said. “You get attached to the guys.” Chris views his work as bringing purpose to the men. “I try to keep them occupied, and then they are happy,” he said. “It’s good for the mind to keep it occupied.”

Signs
known. However, the Three Crowns/Waterloo sign was apparently removed from the tavern in White Horse in 1816. It showed up a few miles east of that village at the Waterloo Tavern, kept by a relative of the old landlord. The Waterloo Tavern was originally the Bull’s Head; its owner was a former Revolutionary officer.
To appeal to the Patriot side and perhaps to honor the downfall of Napoleon, those three crowns were hidden from view permanently behind the newly painted Waterloo Tavern.
Little more is known about this two-sided sign. Not until 1890 does it show up in records again. Research by Brett Snyder, vice president of the historical society, has discovered that eventually the sign was acquired by W.U. Hensel, along with the Hat Inn and Lion Hotel 1812 signs. In 1947, it was sold to Stevens’ House in Lancaster, where it was displayed until 1960 when that hotel closed. All three signs then graced the wall of a motel on Oregon Pike until it closed in 1989. Snyder said, “After that, the trail runs cold.”
Only the keen eye of Randy Good of White Horse saved the Hat Inn sign. He found it, ready for the trash collector, on a property near Lesal Road. Nothing has been discovered of the Lion’s Hotel sign so far. We continue to research these signs.
Select information was provided by Alice Morse Earle’s 1900 book “Stagecoach and Tavern Days” and Snyder.
Summertime craft ideas
Things seem to slow down in summer. The hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, swimming in the ocean, and setting up tents at campsites.
When the weather is accommodating, there is a seemingly endless list of ways to enjoy time spent outdoors. However, inclement weather such as thunderstorms or rain may sometimes cause people to stay inside. On these days, children may make crafts using some of the following ideas.

Father’s Day gift ideas
Each year on the third Sunday in June, people honor the special men who help make the familial engine run. Father’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways, including gift-giving. Anyone looking for the right gift for Dad this Father’s Day may consider the following ideas.
Father’s Day comes just as spring is winding down and summer is about to begin. That means Dad will soon fire up the grill several nights per week if he has not already. Why not give Dad a new grill this season?
Many people have become interested in making smoked foods in recent years, and, if Dad is one of these people, then a smoker and grill hybrid may be the gift for him. If Dad prefers the convenience of grilling at a moment’s notice, then a new propane grill can fit the bill.
Dads who love to tailgate outside their favorite football stadium may like a new portable grill to bring their pregame celebrations up a notch.
If Dad is a devoted drinker of craft beers, then a subscription

to a beer club could be appropriate. Clubs vary, and many offer an array of membership options, but typically these groups hand-pick beers from an assortment of participating breweries, some local and some from distant, though likely domestic, locales.
If Dad is an avid golfer, he may have his sights set on courses where he would like to play. Families can pool their resources and give Dad a trip to a course he’s been dreaming of visiting. Courses across North America have hosted PGA Tour events, meaning Dad could end up playing the same holes his favorite professionals have played. Many clubs across the U.S. offer stunning views and challenging rounds that will be sure to please Dad this Father’s Day.
No man cave is complete without memorabilia. If Dad is a diehard sports fan, help him decorate his go-to spot to watch his favorite team with some authentic memorabilia. Whether families give a framed, game-worn jersey or a bat with Dad’s name engraved on it or a basketball signed by the members of his favorite team, these items will look great on the wall of any father’s man cave.
The right Father’s Day gift can make this special day even more meaningful for the men who do so much for their families throughout the year.

A craft that has persisted for generations is the friendship bracelet. With some general craft supplies, such as embroidery thread, beads, plastic lanyards, or other jewelry-making materials, kids can make and share a variety of friendship bracelets.
Leather sewing kits are another option. Families can evoke the feelings of summer camp at home with leather sewing kits that enable everyone to make handcrafted leather wallets or small purses.
Children may also dye canvas shoes, bandanas or other accessories using commercially produced or homemade dyes. Those who want to make their own dyes may consider using teabags, berry juice, turmeric powder, or other items.
A variety of materials gathered from the outdoors can also be incorporated into crafts.
At the next beach excursion, pick up differently shaped shells to save for making seashell creatures. The shells can be painted and glued together to resemble different animals or whatever designs one can imagine.
Families may also gather sea glass remnants that washed up on beaches. An adult can use a very thin drill bit to make holes in the glass, and then the glass can be fed through earring hooks or chains to create one-of-akind jewelry.
Kids can have also fun gathering smooth pebbles from trails or at the shores of lakes. The pebbles can be painted with various designs or sweet sentiments and then left around the neighborhood for others to discover.
To make sun prints, people should gather natural items such as fern boughs, shells and feathers. They should visit a craft store for a special light-sensitive solution that can be painted onto thick craft paper. After painting the paper, set the natural items on top and let the sun do its work to create silhouettes of the nature items.
Natural items like twigs and feathers, along with other supplies such as yarn, can be used to make dreamcatchers, as well.
Summer craft ideas abound to keep everyone entertained all season long.
