Octorara Class of 2023 celebrates graduation WFCS to add grades nine and 10 this fall
BY FRANCINE FULTON
The Octorara Junior-Senior High School Class of 2023 celebrated its graduation on June 7 during a special ceremony held on the front lawn of the school. The event, which marked the 67th annual graduation ceremony held at Octorara, featured student speakers, musical performances and comments offered by school administrators.
The host of the event was Jonathan Propper, principal, who provided the welcome and a message to the students. “Graduates from the Class of 2023, I have no doubt that you’re prepared to leave Octorara and make this world a better place,” said Propper. “Your parents and teachers have worked tirelessly to shape and mold you into the wonderful people you are and the students that we are so very proud of.”
Senior class president Julia Roth was next to address the audience. She talked about how years pass by in what seem like minutes. “Thirteen years or 2,340 days or 56,160 hours. That’s approximately how long our school career has lasted. All that time, but now it only feels like one minute,” she stated. “To the underclassmen, enjoy high school because it goes by too quickly. To my classmates, please take time to enjoy the moments we all know and the know the difference a singular minute can make.”
She also thanked the parents in attendance for their support through the years. “You have sacrificed so much for us, and we are forever grateful. We will continue to make you proud and become the most successful people we can,” said Julia.
The class valedictorian was Jackson Leaman. The salutatorian was Mackenzie Muldoon.
In his speech, Jackson talked
about the impact of the pandemic on the students. “The Class of 2023 is the first graduating class that has had all four years of their education affected by the reality of COVID-19,” he said. “And yet here we stand at the finish line,
“Graduates from the Class of 2023, I have no doubt that you’re prepared to leave Octorara and make this world a better place.”
tired and weary but resilient all the same. It would have been easy to give up or to lose heart, but each of us here today stayed the course.”
He also mentioned graduate Mason Ellingsworth, who lost his legs during a tractor accident last year. Because of prosthetics,
Mason was able to walk across the stage to accept his diploma. “Mason Ellingsworth, you are an inspiration to us,” said Jackson. “All your heart of bravery and positivity, even in the face adversity, is incredible. Let that same spirit of resilience and relentless determination fill us all.”
Class speaker Amy Tellez gave the final student speech, quoting author Ronan O’Brien, who stated, “Experience has taught me that what you love, you should love all the harder because someday it will be gone.”
“This goes for everything I have experienced, learned, endured and cherished throughout my school years,” said Amy. “Although these are all memories now, I am so glad that I got to spend them here at Octorara.”
Interim superintendent Jim Scanlon provided the concluding remarks.

Building on a successful 80-plus-year history and as a way to meet the needs of the community, West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS) will add ninth and 10th
grades this fall, and another grade level will be added each of the two years afterward. “In the 2025-26 school year, we will be able to say we offer classes for preschool through 12th grade,” said WFCS principal Heather Furlong.

and it will feature activities and games for people of all ages. Summer backyard games will be the activity on opening night. Featured on June 28 will be a scavenger hunt and Trivia/Quizzo Night.
This is the second year that the church has offered the outdoor summer program. Pastor Eric Dorville explained that the program was meant to be an offshoot of Midweek Encounter, which meets on Wednesday nights at the church from October through May. That program includes free dinner and

Farm products guide published
The Chester County Ag Council has published the new edition of “The Chester County Farm Guide.” This publication features the county’s diverse array of farms and locally grown products from artisan cheeses, flowers, and wine to heirloom tomatoes, meats, and eggs. The guide, highlighting over 125 familyowned farms and markets, includes a map and farm addresses, plus a chart that indicates what is currently in season.
In this year’s guide, Farmer of the Year Jamie Hicks of Hicks IV in Cochranville cites sustainability and innovation as his primary business drivers. He sees opportunity in new markets and customers, including the hemp industry and partnering with online retailers looking for environmentally friendly packaging materials. But first and foremost, Hicks focuses on the soil health of the thousands of acres he leases.
The “Chester County Farm
Guide” also celebrates the vibrant network of Chester County farmers and service providers who serve as the backbone of the local food system. Among the featured entities is Avon Grove Charter School’s Micro-Farm, which is making a big impact on over 1,000 students a year from the Avon Grove, Oxford, Coatesville, Kennett, Octorara, and Unionville regions. MicroFarm manager and agriculture teacher Krista Lauterwald works with her fellow
teachers and school administration to weave farming into everyday curricula with hands-on experiences like caring for the school’s livestock, “Bee Academy,” and hydroponic garden systems in the greenhouse.
The Chester County Farm Guide is available free of charge at libraries, township and county offices, Kimberton Whole Foods locations, and select farm stands across the county. Readers may also access the guide at www.chescofarming.org.

Falcons banded in educational event
In collaboration with the biologists from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, all three of Harrisburg’s young peregrine falcons (eyasses) were fitted with identification bands.
Banding provides biologists the ability to identify a specific, individual bird. It also can provide information on where the bird was banded, how old it was at banding, and its sex. Each young falcon was banded, weighed, and given a physical exam. All three had clear eyes and a clear throat, indicating they are free of trichomoniasis.
There are two males and one female. The males were banded 04/BZ and 23/CA, and the female was banded 05/BZ.

programs for adults and youths. “The hope was to keep the momentum going through summer,” Dorville said.
He emphasized that Midweek Encounter and SPARK in the Park are open to the community, not just church members. “One of the big (goals) of this church is to provide opportunities for the community to come together and be a blessing to other people,” said Dorville.
An extra benefit is to introduce the church to those who are searching for a place to worship. “We want to make them feel comfort-
able coming to church because that can be the hardest part,” Dorville noted.
During each SPARK program, a member of the church’s outreach team will host the event. “We have a quick, informal prayer and give instructions for what is taking place,” said Dorville, noting that the event was well attended in its inaugural session. “Last year, we had ‘make your own birdhouses’ for Eastern bluebirds, and we had 50 to 60 people (in attendance). The Community Band and bingo was also a big hit.”
A new SPARK program this
year will be Open Mic Night on July 12. Those who would like to perform are asked to register by emailing pastoreric@penningtonvillechurch.org. The deadline to register is Sunday, July 2.
“It is open to everybodywhether it is a singer, guitarist, spoken word (artist) or (people reading) poetry,” Dorville noted.
In addition to those already mentioned, upcoming SPARK programs will include the following: July 5, kickball, soccer and wiffleball; July 19, bingo; July 26, yoga; Aug. 2, first aid and CPR course; Aug. 9, make you
own terrarium; Aug. 16, water wars and obstacle course; and Aug. 23, Movie Night.
In the case of rain, some events may be moved inside the church. Cancellation information will be posted on the church’s website and Facebook page. All events are free, but a freewill offering will be received.

The Chester County Women’s Commission (CCWC) selected and provided grant funding to four organizations to support and enhance programming that benefits women and mental health in Chester County. The grants were announced during the May 18 Women in Chester County Blueprint Lunch Series hosted by The Fund for Women and Girls. As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, the May lunch event focused on women and mental wellness. The CCWC’s focus for 2023 is
highlighting and recognizing the unique needs and intersection of women and mental health.
The four organizations that received grants of $2,500 each are Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM), LCH Health & Community Services (LCH), Maternal and Child Health Consortium (MCHC), and Project Healing Hive. All of these organizations offer mental health and wellness programs specifically designed for women around Chester County.
CVIM hosts a monthly group, Cafecitos, during which female patients receive education to improve their health and the health of their children. LCH offers Women in Action, an ongoing group designed to help women learn new, more effective ways to build healthier relationships and make room for more balanced authenticity in their lives. MCHC’s Healthy Start program has a therapist that supports those who are pregnant and parenting to ensure access to perinatal services and to support socioemotional strength. Project Healing Hive has a Surviving to Thriving Women’s Health Meet-up, where women come together and support their own healing journey while breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.
CCWC president Meghan McVety and CCWC member and The Fund executive director Kim Andrews were present for the grant recognition. For information on future lunch events hosted by The Fund for Women and Girls, visit www. thefundcc.org.

PLANNING A
Registration is currently underway for grades nine and 10, which will follow a traditional model, meeting in person on Mondays through Fridays. Like the other grades, classes will include art, music, physical education, Bible, Spanish and electives.
WFCS, which formed in 1941, currently offers preschool through eighth grade, but a decision was made to add grades nine and 10. “Together the board and the administration heard the needs of our community,” said Furlong, explaining how the decision came about to offer the additional grades. “It has always been a vision and part of the strategic plan to open up a high school. God really opened the doors and encouraged us to make this happen for this fall.”
For the 2023-24 school year, the high school students will use classrooms in the existing space. “As the program continues to grow, we do have space we can grow into,” noted Furlong. “The
gymnasium was built 15 years ago, so the (classroom) space is there; it just needs to be finished.”
The school has hired new high school teachers, as well as high school administrator Kendra Ridgway, who previously taught at WFCS. She will teach English for grades nine and 10, and work as the coordinator of the high school program. “I’m glad to be back and really looking forward to teaching again,” said Ridgway.
Furlong said that WFCS is attractive to parents who are seeking a nurturing environment for their children. “We are relational. We partner with home, school and church to offer students a wellrounded Christian education,” she said, noting that the average class size is 18 students.
“We infuse biblical principles in all aspects of our day and our curriculum. We have a specific Bible class each day and chapel services each week.”
“I think one of our strengths is small class sizes.
It allows the teachers to be able to get to know the kids individually and their individual learning needs,” Ridgway added. “We are intentional about providing quality academics. Our goal is to make sure we are sending students out prepared for their future. From a spiritual aspect, high school is a very formative time for developing your faith and making it your own. We want to give a place for students to have space to grow in their faith and learn how to relate to the people around them.”
WFCS, located at 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, serves students from the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea Valley, Solanco and Unionville-Chadds Ford area school districts. Busing is provided, and financial aid is available. For more information, visit www.wfcs.org. Parents and prospective students interested in setting up a tour of the school are asked to call the office at 610-593-5011.
Chester County receives grant for Project Reconnect
The Chester County Workforce Development Board (WDB) was recently awarded a $2 million state grant to enable qualified individuals sidetracked while in college or in a certification program to reengage with their studies to graduate or become credentialed. The Near Completers Funds will assist Chester County residents who seek to complete their education, allowing for greater career mobility and increased economic competitiveness in the region.
The Near Completers
Grant awarded to Chester County by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry will bring together the workforce development and postsecondary ecosystems in Chester, Montgomery and Berks counties. This first-of-its-kind collaboration will support nearly 100 Pennsylvanians with some college education but no degree to be employed in their intended training area. In Chester County, the program will be called Project Reconnect and administered by the Chester County Economic Development Council.
Project Reconnect is available to qualified individuals working toward employment in a high-priority or in-demand occupation - primarily health care - by assisting with child care, flexible scheduling, transportation, food, housing, health and wellness, language access and family support. Support will come in the form of project managers, success navigators, faculty advisory teams, PA CareerLink and employer partners.
The program began on June 1.

Manheim Township resident Dennis Denenberg has a deep appreciation for the magnificent and complex 1-acre garden that surrounds his home at 410 Valley Road, Lancaster. But that appreciation blooms into pure enjoyment when visitors see it, smell it and experience it.
In fact, Denenberg has made his garden, affectionately referred to as The Gardens of Oz, available as a nonprofit venue for charitably minded organizations to host fundraisers, meetings and events free of charge. In return for the use of the garden, Denenberg does accept donations to Diana’s Dreamers, a charity he founded at Millerville University to honor his late sister Diana Denenberg-Durand, who succumbed to breast cancer in 2007.

Guided by a pair of certified horticulturists, known as the “Garden Godesses,” the tour takes about an hour to complete.
“My joy comes from seeing people enjoy the gardens,” said Denenberg. “I like to hear people laugh and ask questions. There is nothing as spectacular as nature. Even our grandest man-made monuments don’t come close. It’s fun to share it.”
Plural, The Gardens of Oz is actually an arrangement of more than two dozen separate but intertwining gardens. Mixing both common and exotic plants, the garden features a bamboo grove, fish ponds, a garden dedicated to the Emerald City and Yellow Brick Road, as well as a pink garden honoring the memory of his sister.
The Gardens of Oz is home to more than 500 species of thriving vegetation, each with its own unique life cycle and color pattern.
“Every garden has a different vibe,” said Denenberg. “This is a ‘Wow.’ Here, you’re in the garden. You’re not just observing it. You’re at the whim of nature. Gardeners appreciate the layout, but every person wants to see colors.”
“Each season affects the garden drastically,” continued Denenberg. “My favorite time is spring. It’s spectacular. Once the first blooms come, from then on, there are colors everywhere. Then with the interaction of animals, the bees and the birds, it’s magical.”
It’s also natural beauty 28 years in the making.
When he purchased the property, Denenberg decided after an initial mowing of the lawn that he wanted his yard to be a garden. Now, a blade of grass cannot be found anywhere.
It took Denenberg eight years to fill in the acre lot with plants and flowers, a process he continues to tweak today. Denenberg has been offering tours of the garden for about 15 years now.
“It’s morphed in that the garden now is much more mature,” said Denenberg. “Life is about giving back. It doesn’t matter how rich or poor you are; give back to others. Even a smile can make someone’s day.”
