BINGO!

More Than A Little Free Library

Back-To-School Event Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

When The Factory Ministries, located in the Together Community Center, 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise, began holding bingo for adults in the summer of 2021, organizers were careful to follow COVID-19 protocol. The event, which is still held on the fourth Thursday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m., was situated in the gymnatorium with all parties wearing masks. According to Jessie Brown, adult advocate with The Factory Ministries, because the game attracted so many participants, it has never left the gym. Now, The Factory has planned a special family-oriented bingo for Thursday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. “Back-to-School Bingo will be a social event for the community,” said Brown, who plans to have a larger prize table than usual with an emphasis on items children like to win. She is hoping for donations of fun items, such as glitter pens, brightly colored backpacks, and pencil cases.

any people are familiar with Little Free Libraries (LFL), which are book sharing boxes that are placed in the community and offer free books for readers of all ages. The motto of the LFL program is “Take a Book, Return a Book.” The Little Free Library Cochranville, 1016 B Gap-Newport Pike, has taken the concept even further. Not only does the LFL have a book box, but it also offers a 500square-foot space, formerly a retail store, that offers visitors additional free books, a place where they can read them and the use of free Wi-Fi. While the LFL in front of the store is available 24 hours a day, the indoor space is open on Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

space includes a lending library on the back wall and a permanent collection. “The only books that are not free (to take) are in the alcove,” explained volunteer Ellen Jackson, who is on hand at the LFL space on Saturdays. “They are part of the permanent collection. The (books) that are on the back wall - we ask that they be returned eventually. They are higher-quality books. It is nice to bring them back so everyone else can enjoy them. (All of the other books) are free to keep or bring back.” Maurer said the space is ideal for those who want to grab a book and go as well as people who want to stay a while to read. “There is coffee and tea, and they can come and read,” said Maurer. “Before the pandemic, kids would come and use the Wi-Fi and do homework.” She noted that the space was closed for a time during the pandemic and then open only by appointment.

“We get a lot of local people (visiting the LFL),” Jackson said, noting that the LFL is located next to the Motorcycle Outpost. “I get (women) who stop over because their husband is next door getting a motorcycle part. We get moms and kids and some senior citizens. It’s a mixed group.” For more information about the LFL Cochranville, visit www.face book.com/LFL19330 or www.street road.org/lfl.html. The space is also available to groups, such as homeschoolers and book clubs. Those interested in reserving the space for a meeting are asked to email hello@streetroad.org or message the owners on the Facebook page. Volunteers are also needed so that the indoor library’s operating hours can be increased. Volunteers should email the previously mentioned address for more information.

It is manned by volunteers during operating hours. According to Carol Maurer, who coordinates the site’s volunteers, the space is owned by James Smith and Emily Artinian, directors of the Street Road Artists Space, located 3.5 miles from the LFL. “It was a retail space, but in 2017, the renters left and it was vacant. Then in 2018, James thought it would be a really good idea to have a library space because there is no library in Cochranville,” said Maurer. “At Street Road, they had a LFL box, and they wanted to take the concept and put it into 500 square feet. It’s like the box, only bigger.” “They love reading and they love books, and it’s a way to give back to the community,” Maurer added. “Emily is formerly from Christiana, and they both live in Philadelphia.” In addition to the free books, the

said, adding that participants build relational resources and can easily earn Factory Bucks to use at The Factory Market by taking part. With the large number of participants, Brown works hard to gather attractive prizes for the event. “People play with two cards at a time, so we have two winners per round,” she noted. “Once a month we are giving out 25 to 35 prizes, (and we are doing this) all year round,” said Brown, who is passionate about making sure the prize table offers fun, inviting, and new items. She is hoping area residents will donate quality items that appeal to retired adults. “I want prizes to be new or like new,” she said, noting that prizes should be valued from $5 to $15 and that gift cards are always popular. Other prizes include craft kits, cozy socks and blankets, stuffed animals, potted plants, kitchen gadgets, and candles. “I really struggle to find prizes for guys,” admitted Brown, who said that tools and duct tape have graced the table, along with electronics accessories, such as charging cords and earphones. She has received contributions of $50 from those who want to donate but would prefer not to shop for items. The December bingo is a special event. “For Christmas, I like to have bigger prizes,” said Brown, who said gift baskets and gift cards of $15 or more are among the items

she hopes to line up. “I would like to have some items grandparents win to give to a grandchild,” she said. “I have put donated toys out at Christmas.” In the future, Brown hopes local businesses or churches will sponsor bingo. “All new prizes would be $200 a month, and that would cover some snacks (as well),” said Brown. Donated items for bingo may be dropped off at The Factory between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. Readers who have questions about bingo events may call The Factory at 717687-9594. Octorara High School Graduation

Octorara Class Of 2022 Celebrates Graduation BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Octorara Junior-Senior High School Class of 2022 celebrated its graduation on June 8. The 66th annual graduation ceremony, held on the front lawn of the high school, featured a series of student and administration staff speakers and musical performances by the high school chorale, chorus and band, followed by the presentation of the diplomas. Jonathan Propper, principal, provided the welcome and addressed the Class of 2022, describing its members as resilient. “Our seniors have endured so much during the course of their educational careers … withstanding a worldwide pandemic, different modes of schools, a divided political environment and tragedies in our community,” he stated. “How can we not be amazed at how creative and courageous they have been in the face of

challenges placed in their path?” Senior class president Devon Carroll was next to address the audience. She quoted philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, who said, “Life can only be understood

backwards, but it must be lived forwards.” “It is important that we reflect on our past so we can then be reminded to live presently,” she said. “Pay attention to the small moments in life, the times spent singing in the car ... with your best friends, fishing and hunting with your buddies, spending time with your teammates at practice. You may be surprised that these are the kinds of memories that come to mind when thinking about the past.” She also asked parents and guardians in attendance to stand as she gave a message to them on behalf of the Class of 2022. “We are so thankful for all of your hard work during our high school history,”

she said. “You are the r e a s o n we a r e h e r e today. Thank you.” The class valedictorian was Johanna Cupp. The salutatorian was Marc DiGregorio. Truth was the theme of Johanna's speech. She spoke about defending the truth and the importance of cari ng about other people's feelings when speaking the truth. “To my fellow graduates, best wishes for a fruitful p u rs u i t o f g o o d n e s s , beauty and truth,” she concluded. Class speaker Kayla Kittlitz gave the final student speech, reflecting on the accomplishments of the Class of 2022. “We were part of history here at Octorara in each other's lives and at school,” she stated. “Even looking back at just this year, we had the first outdoor pep rally, the first successful powd e r p u f f fo o t b a l l game, the first annual Mr. Octorara pageant, our academic team advanced the furthest it has ever gone. Mike Trainor made it to states for wrestling, our girls' volleyball and b oys ' t rac k te a m s became the District 3 champions in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, Parker Wiley placed fifth at 'leaps' for track and field and our girls' soccer team had the most successful record in many years.” Superintendent Michele Orner provided the concluding remarks, specifically addressing the graduates. “Remember to dream big and have faith i n your potential to achieve those dreams. Set goals and make plans to achieve these goals,” she said. “Adapt and don't give up. Learn from your mistakes. Conti nue to spread joy and hope and not conflict or discontent. There is no limit to what you will accomplish, and you will continue to make our world a better place.”
