Parkesburg To Host Baseball Festival BY FRANCINE FULTON
Parkesburg, which once had its own professional baseball team called the PICO Ironmen, will celebrate its baseball history with a fiveday Baseball Festival at Minch Park, 111 West St., Parkesburg, from Saturday, June 26, through Wednesday, June 30.

Event To Celebrate Local History BY FRANCINE FULTON
istoric White Chimneys, along with the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, will celebrate its 300th anniversary with a gala on Saturday, July 3, from noon to 9 p.m. The free community celebration will feature a Civil War encampment, musicians, crafts, speakers, a carriage display, equestrian demonstrations, period dancers, antiques, food trucks and an appearance by re-enactor Erik Burro portraying William Penn. The day will conclude with a fireworks display. The celebration is also designed to commemorate local history. In 1701, William Penn spent the night in Gap, then known as Gap-in-theHills, on his way to Conestoga to sign a peace treaty with the Native
“In the 1800s, Hannah Slaymaker made a remark about the beauty of the white chimneys on the house, and the name stuck.” According to a history timeline provided by Hood, White Chimneys started as a log cabin built in 1720 by Francis Jones. Six years later, he received a license to open the Francis Jones Tavern. An addition was made to the original cabin in 1790.

Chad Naggy has established a mini museum at PICO Field, which was once the home of the professional baseball team the PICO Ironmen.
“Jones’ granddaughter married a Slaymaker, and they purchased the building in 1779,” Hood noted. “The Slaymaker family held the property for over 200 years. In the 1800s, Hannah Slaymaker made a remark about the beauty of the white chimneys on the house, and the name stuck.” In 1923, the final addition was put on the house, and in the 1960s and ’70s the building operated as a museum. In 1974, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1999, it was sold to a family that ran an antique shop, but it was sold again in 2006 to the Meyer family. Hood noted that the upcoming gala was originally scheduled for 2020, White Chimneys’ 300th year. “When Jessica Meyer, who owns White Chimneys with her father,

Americans, thereby making Gap a part of history. “‘William Penn’ is coming back to the area for the first time since 1701,” event organizer Kathleen Hood said with a smile.
The event, to be presented by the South Eastern Pennsylvania Travel Baseball Association (SEPTBA), will include baseball games featuring the Elkton Eclipse and the Keystone Baseball Club of Harrisburg, which will play 1860s-style baseball; a classic car show with prizes; a wiffle ball tournament; wood bat games; and food. Attendees will also learn about the history of the Ironmen team, which was created by Horace Beale Jr., president of the Parkesburg Iron Company (PICO). His team played at PICO Field, known today as Minch Park, where it faced players like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Casey Stengel. All proceeds from the festival will benefit the restoration of the original PICO field.

David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit charity created to help veterans, was the recipient of the 2021 American Spirit Award presented by the Veterans Health Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Jennifer Lilly, chief of voluntary service for the Coatesville VA Medical Center, nominated DD831 for the work it does to improve the lives of veterans, including those who reside at the center and others who live in the community. There were 70 nominees total nationwide. DD831 is named for David Turner Jr., who was employed at the VA Medical Center when he passed away at the age of 20 in December 2009. His family members started the all-volunteer DD831 charity to benefit veterans by providing much-needed goods and services. The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. Among its many efforts, DD831 collects underwear and socks for veterans, provides holiday gifts for veterans at its annual gift-wrapping event and donates beds
and other supplies to previously homeless veterans who are moving into transitional housing. Veterans have also enjoyed fishing outings and a trip to see an Eagles preseason game through the efforts of DD831 volunteers. David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive, reported that the national award came as a complete surprise. He learned about the honor during a reception held on May 22 at the VA. “Jennifer told me that we had a meeting with Jeff Beiler, the (Coatesville VA) director,” he shared, noting he was accompanied to the meeting by his wife, Joy. “We went in, and it was not a meeting for the director; it was an announcement that we had won the award.” At the reception, there were photos on display of various DD831 events at the VA as well as a congratulatory banner, and the area was decorated with balloons. “A few people spoke about what David’s Drive means to their departments (at the VA),” David Sr. added. Later, the Turners took part in a virtual awards ceremony, where they were featured in a segment that they prerecorded.
PLANT SALE
The administrative staff at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center and volunteers with David’s Drive 831 gathered to dedicate a new playground at the VA.
The Turners accepted the award on behalf of DD831 board members, committee members and the community, which supports the charity’s mission through donations and monetary gifts. “Receiving an award like this is prestigious, but it validates (why people support us),” David Sr. said. “The money that people give goes toward things that make a difference.” On the same day as the reception, DD831 volunteers and Coatesville VA administrative staff dedicated a children’s playset at the VA to be used by visiting families. The equipment was originally installed in September of
2019, but it was closed in 2020 because of the pandemic. At the dedication, a new sign was unveiled, which was donated by Goshen Signs in West Chester. In addition to offering safety rules, the sign reads, “In Memory of David Turner Jr., Play All Day.” “When our children were young, we would ask them, ‘What do you want to do today?’ Their answer was always, ‘Play all day,’” said David Sr. “We thought that was an appropriate name for this playground.” For more information about DD831, visit www.davids drive831.org or www.face book.com/davids.drive.

SUMMER MUD BOG SERIES
Those who drive through the Borough of Christiana may notice some newly placed Hometown Heroes banners, which honor local servicemen and women who are currently in the military, as well as living and deceased veterans. The banners were dedicated on May 30 by the Christiana Lions Club, which spearheaded the effort to have the banners created and installed throughout the borough. On the same day, the Lions met at Chantry Place to hold a dedication ceremony for three collages that depict all of the current banners. “The collages are replicas of all 63 banners that hang around town,” explained Lions Club member Steve Shivery. “People can go to borough hall and see all of See Heroes pg 4 them and get a map that gives directions where each one of them hangs.” Along with the collages, visitors to borough hall, 10 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, can view a poster that features casual shots of the servicemen and women that were submitted by their families but not included on the banners. “They had an option to send us candid shots. There is a one of a man The Christiana Lions Club Banner Committee includes (from left) Connie Macon, Steve Shivery and Lynn Steele.

The banners, which measure 24 inches by 48 inches, include a picture of the service member and his or her name, branch and era of service. The sponsor’s name appears at the bottom. Represented on the banners are members of the United States armed forces from World War I and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Local residents were invited to submit photos and names for the most recent effort, beginning in February with a deadline of April to allow time for the club members to put the banners in place before Memorial Day weekend.

The event is being planned by Chad Naggy, SEPTBA president and commissioner, who founded the organization in 2016 as an avenue for young ballplayers to compete. SEPTBA’s motto is “Gentlemen First, Ball Players Second.” Helping with the festival is borough council member Josh Mellinger, along with Cathy Wilde Christ, whose father, the late Thaddeus “Bud” Wilde, owned a photograph collection from the original PICO team. “Kathy and Josh came up to idea to have a car show. We started building events around the weekend and it
began to grow into a festival,” Naggy said. “It’s all to raise money for the baseball (fields). There are two fields at Minch Park - upper and lower. The upper field is where the Ironmen played. I’m trying to make the upper field the way it was in 1916.” So far, Naggy’s efforts have resulted in the construction of new dugouts at the lower field. And, with Mellinger’s assistance, Naggy created the Bullpen gift shop and concession stand at the ballpark in a building donated by Keystone Valley Fire Company. Items in the mini museum include a photo of Stengel, Ironmen team photos, a newspaper article from when Cobb played at the field and a photo depicting youths peeking through the fence to watch baseball because they

from Overdrive. Overdrive is where Lancaster County library patrons go to get books and audiobooks. The free app is available at your app store. Kehoe: We all prefer to read books, but e-materials have a special place during a pandemic, when you’re traveling, when you need a new book in the middle of the night when you can’t sleep, if you need to enlarge the font and if you like to fall asleep to a book, as the device will turn itself off. We don’t judge; all reading is good.

good summer reading? Kehoe: For adults, my first recommendation would be Riley Sager’s “Survive the Night.” Goodreads ranks Riley Sager’s “Survive the Night” among the top 10 most anticipated beach reads of the summer. The “Pigeon” series (by Mo Willems) are great read-alouds, and the “Elephant and Piggie” books (by Williems) are perfect for beginning readers. For children, fans of Harry Potter might enjoy Jessica Townsend’s “Morrigan Crow” fantasy series, starting with “The Trials of Morrigan Crow.” For teens, three tried-and-true series are going out a lot now as the authors have added one to the series: Anthony Horowitz’s “Alex Rider,” John Flanagan’s “Ranger’s Apprentice” and Ransom Riggs’ “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” Community Courier: What books are patrons requesting? Vandenbosch: A couple of the books that patrons have asked for are “Downeast” by Gigi Georges and “The Last Thing He Told Me” by Laura Dave. K e h o e : Kristin Hannah’s “The Four Winds” and Matt Haig’s “The Midnight Library” are very popular, but that also means there are long holds queues on them. Colleen Coble is also very popular. Any Mo Willems book is popular with young readers. Community Courier: What book can you read again and again? Vandenbosch: I reread any of Jane Austen’s books. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Do you prefer audiobooks, ebooks or actual books? V a n d e n b o s c h : I prefer to

also promote physical activity and create calming spaces that are essential to stress recovery. Both outcomes are important to the health and rehabilitation efforts for veterans in long-term care, the VAMC said. The announcement means Coatesville VAMC was recognized for the second year in a row for making a missionaligned impact on community wellness through tree education, investment, and community engagement. Dedicating resources to fulfill the facility’s Tree Care Plan meant over 2,100 trees, shrubs, and perennials were planted around the campus. Trees accounted for 154 of the inventory planted; additionally, 75 trees were pruned and fertilized and 45 more were removed. A team of 10 dedicated grounds crew members tends the 140-acre property throughout the year by pruning, planting, mowing, and raking the greenspaces. Composting the grass and leaves while they work to beautify the campus is a standard practice. While COVID-19 restrictions limited community projects, a few staff members teamed up to protect the facility’s tree inventory from the invasive spotted lanternfly by banding at-risk trees with sticky material. epcclassifieds.com Call: 1.800.428.4211 or 717.653.9848 Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm Fax: 717.492.2566 The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center recently acquired two Kitty Hawk Flyers.
The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC), 1220 American Blvd., West Chester, recently added two Kitty Hawk Flyers to its collection. The electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, gifts from their inventor, Kitty Hawk Corporation in Palo Alto, Calif., were intended to serve as recreational vehicles. Museum visitors have opportunities to sit in one of the Flyers, and the other is on display at the museum’s entrance. The lightweight, single-seat aircraft are each eight feet long and 13 feet wide and are powered by 10 lithium polymer batteries. Their 10 direct current (DC) electric motors drive 10 double-bladed, 47-inch diameter
rotors. Their maximum speed of 30 miles per hour allows for 15 to 20 minutes of flight. The Kitty Hawk Flyer’s slim, open cockpit allows for the occupants’ legs to stretch forward, reminiscent of a drag racing car. A two-inch control stick operates the machine that sports 10 rotors just inches away from the seat. It is so easy to fly that pilots do not need a license or much more than about two hours of instruction. AHMEC will offer its first helicopter rides on World Helicopter Day, Sunday, Aug. 15, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Contact AHMEC at 610-4369600 or visit www.american helicopter.museum for more information.
Car Seat Inspections Available The Chester County Sheriff ’s Office (CCSO) will offer free inspections of children’s car seats to keep children safe as they travel. The inspections will be available by appointment at the parking garage across from the Chester County Justice Center, Market Street, West Chester. Sgt. Matthew Tocydlowski and Deputy Suzanne Campos, certified technicians, will conduct the inspections. The halfhour multi-step inspection includes taking basic information about the car seat, vehicle, and age and weight of the child to determine their compatibility for safety. The owner’s safety
seat will be inspected for visible damage and proper installation. The review will also cover demonstrating installation, observing the adult’s installation, and discussion of how the seat works, correct seat position in the vehicle, proper harness installation, and additional information. Car seat inspections are not just for first-time parents. Anyone who will transport a child in a car, including grandparents, other family members, babysitters, or child care providers, is welcome to schedule an appointment. To make an appointment, contact scampos@chesco.org or 610-344-6139.

YGBW from pg 6 At the ceremony, Denise Day, president and CEO of YGBW, and Laura SchofieldPierson, executive director of the West Chester Area YMCA, both offered remarks, followed by a countdown to the first official serve. YGBW members then took to the courts to play with staff providing demonstrations on how to play pickleball. These are the first of many new pickleball courts both indoor and outdoor that YGBW is installing in seven of its Chester County branches. Over the next few months, official outdoor pickleball courts will be installed at the Jennersville YMCA, Kennett Area YMCA and Upper Main Line YMCA, while the outdoor courts at the Brandywine YMCA will be renovated. Additionally, at the Brandywine YMCA, Jennersville YMCA, Kennett Area YMCA, Lionville Community YMCA and Oscar Lasko YMCA, the gymnasium floors are being resurfaced to create indoor pickleball courts with official court markings and color-coded kitchens. With both indoor and outdoor courts, members will be able to play year-round. Michelle Smith, YGBW’s pickleball coordinator, noted that the organization is expanding its pickleball offerings with lessons, classes, leagues, clinics and more. YGBW currently offers open pickleball play at multiple branches for its members, and no equipment or prior experience is required. Paddles are available for use, and a rotation system is used to ensure everyone is welcome to play. To learn more, visit www.ymcagbw.org.
