Octorara Class of 2023 celebrates graduation
BY FRANCINE FULTON
TheOctorara Junior-Senior High School Class of 2023 celebrated its graduation on June 7 during a special ceremony held on the front lawn of the school. The event, which marked the 67th annual graduation ceremony held at Octorara, featured student speakers, musical performances and comments offered by school administrators.
The host of the event was Jonathan Propper, principal, who provided the welcome and a message to the students. “Graduates from the Class of 2023, I have no doubt that you’re prepared to leave Octorara and make this world a better place,” said Propper. “Your parents and teachers have worked tirelessly to shape and mold you into the wonderful people you are and the students that we are so very proud of.”
Senior class president Julia Roth was next to address the audience. She talked about how years pass by in what seem like minutes. “Thirteen years or 2,340 days or 56,160 hours. That’s approximately how long our school career has lasted. All that time, but now it only feels like one minute,” she stated. “To the underclassmen, enjoy high school because it goes by too quickly. To my classmates, please take time to enjoy the moments we all know and the know the difference a singular minute can make.”
Festival to benefit
She also thanked the parents in attendance for their support through the years. “You have sacrificed so much for us, and we are forever grateful. We will continue to make you proud and become the most successful people we can,” said Julia.
The class valedictorian was Jackson Leaman. The salutatorian was Mackenzie Muldoon.
In his speech, Jackson talked about the impact of the pandemic on the students. “The Class of 2023 is the first graduating class that has had all four years of their education affected by the reality of COVID-19,” he said. “And yet here we stand at the finish line, tired and weary but resilient all the same. It would have been easy to give up or to lose heart, but each of us here today stayed the course.”
He also mentioned graduate Mason Ellingsworth, who lost his legs during a tractor accident last year. Because of prosthetics, Mason was able to walk across the stage to accept his diploma. “Mason Ellingsworth, you are an inspiration to us,” said Jackson. “All your heart of bravery and positivity, even in the face adversity, is incredible. Let that same spirit of resilience and relentless determination fill us all.”
Class speaker Amy Tellez gave the final student speech, quoting author Ronan O’Brien, who stated, “Experience has taught me that what you love, you should love all
the harder because someday it will be gone.”
“This goes for everything I have experienced, learned, endured and cherished throughout my school years,” said Amy. “Although these
are all memories now, I am so glad that I got to spend them here at Octorara.”
Interim superintendent Jim Scanlon provided the concluding remarks.

Church to offer Summer SPARK Program
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Bingo, yoga and an outdoor movie night are just some of the activities that will be featured at SPARK in the Park, a weekly program being offered this summer by Penningtonville Presbyterian Church.
SPARK in the Park began on June 21, and it will meet every Wednesday through Aug. 23 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Atglen Community Park, 400 Ridge Ave., Atglen.
The event is open to the community, and it will feature activities and games for people of all ages. This is the second year that the church has offered the outdoor summer program.
Pastor Eric Dorville explained that the program was meant to be an offshoot of Midweek Encounter, which meets on Wednesday nights at the church from October through May. That program includes free dinner and programs for adults and youths. “The hope was to keep the momentum going through summer,” Dorville said.
He emphasized that Midweek Encounter and SPARK in the Park are open to the

auctions include stories that span communities from around the world and encouraging the exchange of different cultures and histories. Although Mennonite Life was unable to hold as many auctions as usual during the COVID-19 pandemic, the auctions have returned to their regular schedule this year.
The organization acquires
community, not just church members. “One of the big (goals) of this church is to provide opportunities for the community to come together and be a blessing to other people,” said Dorville.
An extra benefit is to introduce the church to those who are searching for a place to worship. “We want to make them feel comfortable coming to church because that can be the hardest part,” Dorville noted.
During each SPARK program, a member of the church’s outreach team will host the event. “We have a quick, informal prayer and give instructions for what is taking place,” said Dorville, noting that the event was well attended in its inaugural session. “Last year, we had ‘make your own birdhouses’ for Eastern bluebirds, and we had 50 to 60 people (in attendance). The Community Band and bingo was also a big hit.”
A new SPARK program this year will be Open Mic Night on July 12. Those who would like to perform are asked to register by emailing pastoreric@penningtonville church.org. The deadline to
register is Sunday, July 2.
“It is open to everybodywhether it is a singer, guitarist, spoken word (artist) or (people reading) poetry,” Dorville noted.
Upcoming SPARK programs will include the following: July 5, kickball, soccer and wiffleball; July 19, bingo; July 26, yoga; Aug. 2, first aid and CPR course; Aug. 9, make you own terrarium; Aug. 16, water wars and obstacle course; and Aug. 23, Movie Night.
In the case of rain, some events may be moved inside the church. Cancellation information will be posted on the church’s website and Facebook page. All events are free, but a freewill offering will be received.

the books for the auction through a variety of sources. Book owners often consign their items to Mennonite Life in exchange for a percentage of the sale. Others donate books from their collections to benefit the organization, and books are frequently decommissioned from the Mennonite Life Library to be sold in the auction.
“We tend to look for things that are Anabaptist-specific, but we have a wide variety of work,” said Kevin Bradford, Mennonite Life’s used book manager. “It’s incredible to touch and see history and how it impacts people.”
All of the funds raised from the auction benefit Mennonite Life and its mission to preserve history. In addition to the auction, the organization hosts a book fair every year in September. “It’s interesting to see which books people go crazy for,” Bradford said. “It’s a lot of fun to have the general public come out and enjoy seeing these books.”

Atglen Public Library offers Summer Reading Program
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Atglen Public Library is offering a variety of programming for patrons of all ages this summer as part of the Summer Reading Program themed “All Together Now.”
Registration is required by choosing “Register for Programs” at www.atglenpublic library.org or by calling 610593-6848.
As part of a reading incentive program, children, teenagers and adults may take part in the library’s “Read and Bead” activity. Children are asked to read or have a book read to them for at least 30 minutes a day. Adults and teens are asked to read for 60 minutes per day.
“When they check in with their reading log, they can exchange their time for a bead of different value,” explained library director Robbyn Kehoe. “There are beads for 30 minutes, one hour, two hours and silver charms for three hours. We give them a cable and they

can make a bracelet or necklace or hang it on their backpack.”
She said that participants can choose the colors of the beads to make their own creations. “Our goal is that readers don’t compete against each other; they try to do better themselves every day,” Kehoe said. “The real point of summer reading is for kids to read every day, so they don’t lose their academic skills when they go back to school.”
Kehoe said the program is designed to attract children who enjoy reading, as well as “reluctant” readers. “It’s not really about reaching kids who are already reading but an incentive to kids who don’t,” she said.
Additionally, children can earn Patch Power activity cards this summer. It is necessary to attend three library programs to earn a patch.
Among the programs to be offered this summer are Mini Music-Makers for preschoolers, which meets

Reading Railroad Days will take place during regular museum hours and is included in the regular museum admission.

When magician Brett Myers was growing up in Chambersburg, he remembers his family visiting Lancaster County to
attend presentations at Sight & Sound Theatre. In 2011, he and his wife, Labrina, moved to the area. For a time, the couple traveled doing magic shows in partnership with nonprofit organizations, but moving to the county made them consider producing a local show.
“We thought it would be a great place to learn and grow and develop as artists,” said Brett, who stopped traveling in 2015 and connected with a local theater to do a stationary show that allowed for illusions that are harder to do on the road. By 2018, he and Labrina had outgrown the theater space and began searching for something larger.
In 2019, the former Rainbow’s Comedy Playhouse became available. “We moved in on January 1, 2020, and we worked tirelessly for 10 weeks to renovate,” recalled Brett. The Magic & Wonder Dinner

everyone, even if they are low-income,” said Sara Rice, Everybody Plays! committee member. “It is a hallmark of what we are - to be for everybody. It will be a really good time.”
Rice, who is also a member of the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), noted that PAC will present Second on First, a new farmers market, which will debut on July 8 from 8 a.m. to noon. It will be open along First Avenue in Parkesburg on the second Saturday of each month. Everybody Plays! will have a table at the farmers market provid-
ing information about the organization and directing people to the festival later in the day.
Rice said the Summer Festival is designed to build on the success of Everybody Plays! Fall Festival held last October.
“We raised about $3,000, and we had a turnout of 400 people. The park filled up,” she reported.
According to Rice, the effort to renovate the playground began last fall. A plan was devised for the playground’s main structure to be fully wheelchair-accessible and to include a merry-go-round and
interactive play panels. The proposed playground would also feature a disc swing and an area for children with sensory issues who need a break from play.
A planning meeting was held last September at the Parkesburg VFW, during which residents were invited to share their thoughts about the proposed changes. “When we took it to the public, one of the things most requested was a water feature, so it has been expanded to include a splash pad,” Rice said. “Kids in Parkesburg can cool off

during the summer.”
Everybody Plays! is currently fundraising for the park. “We have moved into the grant writing phase,” Rice explained. “We are on target to hold a groundbreaking at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025,” Rice said, adding. “We filed our incorporation papers in September, so in (almost a year) we have raised $10,000.”

Theater was ready to open in March of 2020, but then COVID-19 restrictions hit.
“We went into a holding pattern and officially opened July 1, 2020,” Brett said. The Magic & Wonder Mystery variety show has been running ever since.
About 10 years ago, Brett partnered with WJTL to give a magic show at the Junction Center as a fundraiser for HOPE International.
“(HOPE International is) an organization that makes poverty disappear,” said Brett. Magic & Wonder recently partnered with The Factory Ministries for a food drive that brought in more than 450 pounds of food along with cash donations for The Factory Market food pantry. Area veterans have been the recipients of the theater’s generosity as well.
“We are doing free dinners and shows for veterans and police officers,” said Brett of the special running from Friday, June 30, through
Saturday, July 8. Interested veterans and police officers may call the box office at 717-323-3077 to learn about the special. “(At the show) they need to (present) identification that certifies they are an active or retired veteran or a police officer,” Brett noted.

In addition to the magic show, the theater has recently added Jukebox Jive running during 3 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through the end of October. “It’s not just a music show. It has a variety of circus arts woven throughout,” said Brett, who noted that audience members will “experience the wonder decades of ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” “We take you to a soda pop shop. We go to the age of Aquarius, Woodstock, and the awesome ’80s,” said Brett, who noted that six vocalists and dancers from around the country will portray greasers, jocks, cheerleaders, and nerds in the two-hour show that includes the greatest hits from the aforementioned decades. “It celebrates the golden age of rock ’n’ roll, and it takes (audience members) on a

Hazard of battery-related fires addressed at summit
June is National Safety Month, making it a good time to tackle the escalating dangers associated with the improper disposal of lithiumion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the rechargeable batteries that power everything from household electronic devices, like cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, ecigarettes, electronic toothbrushes and remote controls, to electric vehicles and even children’s toys. Some extended-life non-rechargeable batteries, found at many retail outlets, also contain lithium and can cause fires too.
At a statewide summit hosted by the Pennsylvania Recycling Markets Center (RMC) on June 8 in Bethlehem, representatives of Pennsylvania’s waste and recycling industry, and the Pennsylvania RMC, along with state agency officials, gathered to discuss what to do with batteries at the end
of their life and how to educate consumers about their safe disposal.
As more lithium-ion batteries are discarded and improperly placed in curbside residential waste or recycling collection containers and bags, the safety risks related to their combustibility are increasing. Once in the recycling or waste stream, these batteries get mixed with tons of materials and placed in hot temperatures under significant compression.
Consumer information about proper disposal, including local drop-off locations, can be found at www.call2recycle.org. All Call2Recycle drop-off locations accept used rechargeable batteries.
Additional information can be found at www.epa.gov /recycle/frequent-questions -lithium-ion-batteries, a recently-launched Environmental Protection Agency website dedicated to questions on lithium-ion batteries.
