Volunteers Needed For Freedom Life’s Serve Day By Francine Fulton

For the first time, Freedom Life is participating in the global Serve Day on Saturday, July 13, and volunteers are needed to join Community Care Teams that will perform tasks in the neighborhood. According to www.serveday.com, the annual event provides churches across the world with opportunities “to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness.” Local volunteer opportunities will include landscaping, making repairs, washing vehicles, visiting elderly residents and cleaning homes. “(Serve Day) was started by a church in Alabama, and there are lots of churches all over the world that participate,” said Jane

Adam Nagle is still settling into his new office in the Together Community Center (TCC), where he was recently named executive director of The Factory Ministries. While the walls in the office may still be bare, Nagle has assessed the situation and is eagerly working to move forward in his new role. “This is a special place with a really bright future,” said Nagle. “There’s energy and optimism, and I am excited about the pieces I can contribute.” Nagle, who was raised in Lititz, has training and experience in a number of areas that qualify him to lead the ministry. He attended Lititz Christian School and graduated from Warwick High School in 1995, later serving as a staff member of the Warwick football coaching team. He attended Word of

Life Bible Institute in Pottersville, N.Y., before transferring to Lancaster Bible College, where he earned a degree in pastoral ministries in 2002. Nagle then served as associate pastor in a rural Mifflin County church where he worked with under-resourced youths. “The church positioned itself to work with marginalized teenagers,” explained Nagle, who left that position to take part in an inner city church planting mission in Charlotte, N.C. “The church was focused on breaking down racial barriers that segregate churches,” he noted. In 2008, Nagle returned to Lancaster County to work as a training supervisor at SuperValu Food Distribution Warehouse in Denver. He was tasked with increasing employee retention by 20%, a goal he and his team reached. “I learned a lot about workforce development and what skills are needed,” said

Garlock, Freedom Life’s event coordinator. “We’ve got a number of projects in the community in Chester and Lancaster counties.” Those who would like to participate in the event may register to volunteer at www.freedom.life/serve-day or by downloading a Serve Day app. “Most of the projects are more appropriate for teenagers and above,” said Garlock. “On the app there are age filters. We did intentionally schedule a couple of projects open to children, and those are highlighted in the project descriptions. The app will direct you to search for a church, and you can find our church and the specific projects. The Serve Day app is free for anyone to download who wants to join in the project.” Since Freedom Life has three local See Volunteers pg 6

Nagle. “I picked up a passion to help in those places.” In 2010, Nagle became lead pastor at Bethany Grace Fellowship in East Earl, where he served for nine years. He lives in Terre Hill with his wife, Tonya, and four children. For several years now, The Factory Ministries, which provides a youth center, a food pantry, and social services, has been working toward achieving the goals mandated by a United Way grant for the Pequea Valley area. The goals include having 100% of area children enter kindergarten ready to learn, 100% of area individuals holding a post-secondary credential, 100% of community members having a medical home, and half of those now living in poverty moving to a better situation in the next decade. Nagle is especially looking forward to working with the Pequea Valley School District and area business leaders on workforce development. “We want to step into that space,” he noted. “The housing crisis is another issue we are excited about addressing,” said Nagle, who is looking forward to having the first Safe Parking Lot on the East Coast open at the center in the fall. The endeavor will include a crisis shelter, currently under construction in the TCC basement. “For individuals who are living out of their cars, it’s illegal to stay in parking lots,” explained Nagle. The center, which has been in the works for some time, will provide a kitchen, showers, and a secure place to sleep. Individuals who benefit from the shelter will engage with The Factory to work toward long-term housing solutions. Nagle praised The Factory Ministries employees he met when he stepped into his new role. “The team here is amazing,” he said, describing the group as young and energetic. “It’s a team that deeply loves people.” He noted that The Factory culture exhibits a “Why not?” attitude when facing an issue. Nagle also lauded the local community for the support the organization received over the last several months. “Through this

transition, the community really rallied around The Factory,” said Nagle. “My role is to continue to build on that to work with our community … to build the organizational structure so we can sustain growth … at a healthy level and pace. That’s the heart of

where we are at and what I am doing.” Readers who would like to learn more about The Factory Ministries, which is located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, may visit www.thefactory ministries.com or call 717-687-9594.

Rising Sun from pg 1 James Kennedy built the Rising Sun Tavern in 1792 and it opened the following year. That was followed by the Gap Blacksmith Shop around 1801. Maxwell Kennedy built two homes for himself and his family known as the Maxwell Kennedy House and Bellevue, along with their outbuildings. After James Kennedy passed away in 1799, Maxwell Kennedy (1782-1845) inherited 270 acres that included the Rising Sun. He served as constable for Salisbury Township in 1812. He served during the War of 1812 as a lieutenant and was later promoted to colonel. He served in the state House of Representatives from 1835-36. All four parcels were once part of a larger 500-acre property that included what is now the community of Gap. The Blacksmith Shop and the Kennedy House are on the south side of Route 30. The Kennedy House, built after 1806, has been added to over the centuries and continues to be a private residence. The Blacksmith Shop, constructed around 1801, was an important feature to the community. A two-story, stuccocovered stone building, it has interior brick chimneys at each gable end. Currently owned by the Historical Society of Salisbury Township, the building has been restored to its original state in many ways, and archeological studies have been done at the property, uncovering a wide assortment of artifacts. Bellevue was a blue limestone house with associated farm buildings. It stood until late last year when demolition of the property began. The tobacco barn on the site was one of the first elements to be removed to be rebuilt near Elizabethtown. Sometimes known as the Sign of the Rising Sun, the tavern was a popular lodging place for early travelers on the Philadelphia-Lancaster Turnpike that later became Route 30. It began as a drovers’ stop for teams and wagons and reputedly served notables such as Gen. Lafayette, Gen. Winfield Scott and President Andrew Jackson. The historic core of the building has been surrounded by additions over the years as it has prospered and grown. It continued to be used as a restaurant under a series of owners in the past decades under many different names, including the Beechtree Inn, 4 Brothers, and Stonehouse, but is currently vacant. As development continues in the area, the Historical Society of Salisbury Township is hoping the remaining structures in the Rising Sun Historic District will be preserved for the future. To learn more about the historical society, readers may visit www.salisbury twphistory.org or search for “Historical Society of Salisbury Township” on Facebook.

In Quarryville, teams will be at Solid Rock Youth Ministries, the Quarryville Borough municipal building and Good’s Store for a free car wash. A detailed list of projects is available at www.freedom.life/serve-day. Teams will gather at one of three rally points at 8:30 a.m. for encouragement, instructions and a light breakfast. Supplies will be provided, and most of the tasks will be completed by noon. Garlock pointed out that the projects are being held at the church’s community partners. “We asked some of our community partners that we already work with and know if we could do something that would be helpful to them and a good way to serve them,” noted Garlock. “And we had (church) members suggest projects.” The church hopes to attract at least 300 volunteers. “We know that for some of the projects that are more ambitious, the more volunteers the better,” Garlock said. She noted that volunteering is a practical way to help the community. “People are excited to come together and make a difference,” said Garlock. “We are hoping that these selfless acts will be a blessing and fuel a passion for serving others in our communities.” For more information, readers may email jane@freedom.life or call 610-593-5959.
