PAWS for Reading offered at Parkesburg Library
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Children are invited to read to a canine friend as part of the PAWS for Reading program offered on the third Tuesday of the month from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Parkesburg Free Library.
Patrons may sign up for a 15-minute session with a therapy dog provided by PAWS for People, a nonprofit organization based in Delaware.
During the most recent session, Linda Felty visited the library with her dog, Cookie. “(PAWS for People) asks us to volunteer, and they (make a schedule) of where they want us to go,” said Felty. “We went to Barnes & Noble in Christiana, Del., to visit the shoppers, to a nursing home and a summer school program for children who are disabled in Garnet Valley. We also went to Lincoln University’s Mental Health Day. (Cookie) gave love to the students, and they enjoyed giving her some treats.”
Felty noted that PAWS for People dogs also visit prisons, hospitals and cancer centers. “They love it when we bring the dogs. They like to be able to pet on them,” said
Chester County 9-1-1 telecommunicator receives scholarship
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Kate Speidel graduated in 2018 from West Chester University with a degree in psychology, but she was unsure of what job she would be interested in pursuing after school.
As it turned out, Speidel has found a rewarding career as a 9-1-1 telecommunicator with the Chester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) and was recently named a recipient of the Gold Line Telecommunicator Scholarship by the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). The scholarship is awarded to 9-1-1 professionals across the country for their exceptional “hard work, commitment and dedication to public service.”
Felty. “(Cookie) is so funny. After a while, she will get comfortable, and she will roll over so people can rub her belly.”
Children who may be uncomfortable reading aloud or those who are struggling with reading are encouraged to read to a therapy dog. “Sometimes they get nervous because she is a big dog, but when she sits down, they are calm,” Felty said.
Felty, who works as an elementary school counselor in Harford County Public Schools in Maryland, adopted Cookie with hopes to someday bring her to school. “I wanted a Labradoodle because they are so great about being therapy dogs. They have the personality for it,” she said. “It took us about a year and half to go through the classes. I did get trained to go to a library, and there are certain things they tell us like to bring a blanket for her to lay on and to take some books with us. They have special training if you are going to the cancer center. When we went to a school, we sat in a circle, and the kids thought it was wonderful.”
She noted that PAWS for People provides therapy cats, dogs and rabbits. “We go to Jenner’s Pond
(Retirement Community), and they have a magnetic paw above the door, so you know who is willing to have us come in,” Felty explained. “I was there one day, and they had a therapy mini pony. He walked around, and people were so excited.”
She said the use of therapy animals has proven effective in many cases. “I read a story about a child who lived through a school shooting and had not spoken since the event,” she shared. “The local firehouse opened up for therapy dogs to come in for the kids. The parents took their son, and he laid down (with) the dog and told the dog everything.”
At the Parkesburg Library, a youngster, despite her initial reluctance, was able to read comfortably with Cookie. “Her grandmom said she doesn’t read out loud and is very nervous (about reading). (Dogs) are nonjudgmental, so she did a fabulous job,” said Felty. Parkesburg Free Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. For more information about library activities, visit www.parkesburglibrary.org or search for “Parkesburg Free Library” on Facebook.
The scholarship provided for Speidel’s attendance at, plus a $1,000 travel stipend to, NENA 2023, the group’s annual conference and expo held in June in Grapevine, Texas.
Speidel began working as a 9-1-1
telecommunicator as her first job out of college. “I was getting a broad major and seeing where life took me,” said Speidel when describing her decision to apply for her position with the DES. “I use (my major) every day. I am working and talking with people on the radio and the phone who are dealing with crisis.”

OAFC, which serves individuals and families in need in the greater Octorara area, accepts donations during its operating hours, which are on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Open house planned at DVGRR
Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will hold its monthly open house event from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, July 8. The public is invited to meet the golden retrievers and other dogs that are available for adoption.
Admission is free. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions, and food will be available for purchase. Photos are not permitted, and attendees should not bring other dogs to this event. For details, contact info@dvgrr.org or 717-484-4799 or visit https://dvgrr.org/adopt/ monthlyopenhouse/.
The cupboard receives some food from the Chester County Food Bank, but it relies on donations of products and monetary donations. Dougherty reported that she recently had to purchase food from Walmart because of the lack of food on the cupboard’s shelves.
Additionally, Dougherty noted that no food drives, which are more prevalent during the holiday season, are currently scheduled. “We have not been able to get food drives lined up. That is what we are missing,” she said. “We have more clients and less product.”
Current and new clients seeking assistance are asked to bring in appropriate
Right now, food is distributed in a drive-through format, but beginning in September, clients will be served inside the building.
The Octorara Area Food Cupboard is also seeking volunteers. “No one is paid; everyone is a volunteer,” said Dougherty. “Volunteers are needed especially because it’s summertime and people go away for vacation. I need a call list for people to come in.”
For more information about the OAFC, call 610-857-4000 or visit www.octfood.com or www.facebook.com/Octorara AreaFoodCupboard. Those who would like to coordinate a food drive should contact Dougherty in advance at OAFC424@comcast.net. Financial donations are accepted on the website by clicking on the Donate button.

One-Room Schoolhouses
Submitted by Leona Baker, Historical Society of Salisbury Township
In early rural America, the educational norm was a oneroom building presided over by a local teacher. Eight years of education was considered adequate for the farming and village lifestyle. Only boys attended, however, and girls learned their ABCs at home, if at all.
In 1834, the first Pennsylvania state free school law for children of the commonwealth was established. All children were to be educated at public expense. Specifically included was the female population. A tax, levied on all landowners of a district, would cover costs of buildings and teachers. Schoolhouses were to be primarily one-room buildings serving farm and village children “who lived within one mile of the school.”
With 25 to 50 children ages 6 to 15 in one crowded building, any single school in Salisbury Township might include English and German Protestants, as well as Amish and Mennonites from all parts of Europe. Many could not speak English. Despite these difficulties, educators managed to accommodate a schedule that fulfilled the requirements of state mandates for each grade.

the floor, fill ink bottles, light the kerosene lamps and have lesson plans ready for each grade. All had to be ready for

Schoolhouses
students who journeyed to school without regard for weather conditions. Reading, arithmetic, geography, spelling, penmanship and simple science were taught daily, with honor to God and country emphasized.
One student chore each day was carrying in wood or coal for the stove. Few schools had wells, so older students carried buckets to the nearby farmer’s well or spring for fresh water.
Often a yoke was used to lighten the weight of the water brought back and placed in a cooler. A yoke is a wooden frame shaped to fit over the shoulders, with a notch to hold a pail or other burden at each end. By the 1900s, there may have been more than just one cup available at the school for the whole student body.
Order was a prime requirement of the presiding instructor. Deviation from an accepted norm might culminate in a student’s being shamed or

ostracized. Improper recitation often led to sitting in a corner while wearing a dunce cap, which was a tall, triangular hat that was hard to keep on. Another common disciplinary action was being spanked with a long, flat plank, which could be wielded to produce a memorable but not usually injurious thwack.
By the mid-20th century, rural Salisbury Township was changing, and the school board began considering a fully consolidated elementary school system. Salisbury Elementary School opened in 1962, with a single grade to a room. All firstthrough sixth-graders in the township were bused there.
A centuries-old way of life was gone. Only among the township’s Amish neighbors does school with all eight grades in one room remain today.
Information comes from the new book “How They Learned Their ABCs” by Leona Baker and members ofthehistoricalsociety.

Taking a swing against poverty
BY ANN MEAD ASH
More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christcentered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm, and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began.
HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Wyncote Golf Club, Oxford, on Sept. 15 at 8 a.m. Those who wish to register to play or who want to provide a sponsorship may do so at www .hopeinternational.org/golf by Friday, Sept. 1.
Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains,
not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual.
“It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillusionment of the war,” he said, adding that many
people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.
Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable

After obtaining the position, Speidel took part in a DES training program, which included three months of classroom training and then being on the floor with another professional. “They don’t throw you out there. They have your back until you are ready to be on your own,” she said.
As a telecommunicator, Speidel speaks with the person who has dialed 9-1-1, and the dispatcher coordinates emergency personnel in the field, including police, firefighters, rescue workers and ambulance workers.
“We have instructions that we read out for medical calls. It helps (callers) help themselves until EMS can arrive,” said Speidel, adding, “There are certain calls or days that are more stressful than others.”
Speidel noted that 9-1-1 call takers do not know for certain the outcome of the emergency. “Once they get to the hospital, we don’t know what goes on with them. We just have to be confident that we got help to them as soon as possible,” she shared. “There is a balance between being able to

be empathic and resonate with people and also be able to distance yourself from it. It’s their worst day, and you need to help them get through it.”
“Kate is an excellent example of who people expect to get when they call 9-1-1 in an emergencysomeone reassuring, knowledgeable and dependable,” said BJ Meadowcroft, Chester County DES deputy director for 9-1-1 operations. “Everyone on the DES team admires Kate’s professionalism and cheery demeanor.”
Both Speidel and Meadowcroft said that workers at the 9-1-1 center are a tightknit group, working side by side through times of major emergencies and on holidays. “We consider our workplace professional, but there is a family-like atmosphere,” said Meadowcroft. “Our employees bond over their experiences helping people. It gives you a sense of belonging.”
“We check in on each other after difficult days and difficult calls,” Speidel added. “There is a family atmosphere.”

Parkesburg POINT receives donation
Local farmer Charles Kauffman recently directed a $5,000 America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to The Parkesburg POINT youth center. According to Sarah Daniels, the POINT’s director of grants and social media, the funding will be used for the nonprofit organization’s nutrition program. The POINT feeds more than 650 at-risk youths and their families, providing more than 13,000 meals annually.
Since 2010, the America’s Farmers programs, sponsored by the Bayer Fund, have awarded nearly $65 million to nonprofits, aspiring agriculture students and public schools across rural
America. The Grow Communities program asks farmers across the country to participate by nominating nonprofit organizations, which then may receive resources to strengthen their local communities.
Last August, farmers entered for the chance to direct a $2,500 Grow Communities donation to a local eligible nonprofit of their choice. Farmers have directed donations to food banks, emergency response organizations, schools, youth agriculture programs and many other initiatives that support rural America.

Chester County department wins national awards
Chester County’s Department of Computing and Information Services (DCIS) has been recognized by the National Association of Counties (NACo) with two 2023 Achievement Awards for ChescoViews and the Chester County Recycling Dashboard. Both are GIS - Geographic Information Systems - applications that DCIS developed for public use.
ChescoViews is a free, interactive application that allows users to search Chester
County property or parcel information by address, owner’s name, Uniform Parcel Identifier (UPI) or Parcel Identification Number (PIN). Users may then print the information.
The Chester County Recycling Dashboard is a free, interactive application that allows users to select an item type, such as art supplies, bikes, clothing and shoes, food, furniture or household goods, to find recycling options in the county.

JLL recognizes youth volunteers
Program to teach sewing, quilting
Chester County 4-H will offer an introductory sewing and quilting program, Summer of Stitches, from 9 a.m. to noon on Monday to Friday, July 24 to 28, at the Romano 4-H Center, 1841 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook. During the week, campers will learn to use a sewing machine and will complete several projects, ending the week with a completed piece and top-stitched quilt. The camp is intended for children age 10 and older and will be appropriate for new and intermediate sewists.
The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) has announced the two winners of this year’s 2023 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award: Lauren Leister, an 18year-old graduating senior from Warwick High School, and Caleb Miller, an 18-yearold graduating senior from Donegal High School. Leister and Miller each received a $1,500 scholarship prize, of which a $300 contribution will be donated by JLL to a charity of each student’s choice. Leister’s chosen charity is Four Diamonds, and Miller selected the Old Line Youth Livestock Foundation.
Leister’s commitment to volunteerism has been illustrated throughout her high school career. She participated in and served as the chairperson of UNITE for MiniTHON Club. Leister has been an active member of the Lititz Leo Club, and she was also appointed to the National Honor Society (NHS), where she was elected as secretary and was involved in fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations.
Miller’s scholastic accomplishments have included his induction into the NHS,
National Math Honor Society, and Key Club. He has also been involved in 4-H, undertaking a project to install cattle gates at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. He has been a five-year volunteer with the Marietta Fireworks Team.
Named a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Show Junior Committee, Miller was recently selected as one of 12 youths from Pennsylvania to assist with ensuring the success of the Farm Show.
The annual award is named in honor of Deborah P. Altman, a past president of the Junior League of Lancaster, whose life exemplified a commitment to volunteering, a love of children, and service to the community. The purpose of the award is to recognize young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspiring their peers to volunteer in their communities. Since the award was established in 1984, more than $48,800 has been awarded to outstanding youths in Lancaster County.
To learn more about the mission of the JLL, including its projects, awards, and fundraisers, visit www.jllancaster.org.
There is a discount for current 4-H members. Registration will be available at https://4h.zsuite.org until Thursday, July 20, unless the
program fills before that date. New families will need to sign up for 4-H before registering for the camp. For more information or for help registering, contact the Penn State Extension 4-H office at 610-6963500 or chesterext@psu.edu.
Summer of Stitches Day Camp is one of Penn State Extension’s 4-H Summer Specials programs. Other summer offerings include Babysitting Day Camp, Robots to Rockets Day Camp, Coding With Spheros Day Camp, Candy Making Day Camp, and an overnight at Camp Shehaqua. To learn more, visit www.extension.psu .edu/4-H and look under “Programs and Opportunities” for “Find Your County 4-H Program.”

Litter prevention program receives grant
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful (KPB) will continue its partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to implement the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) at rest stops across the state with a $20,000 grant from Keep America Beautiful. Awardees agree to encourage the enforcement of litter laws, which includes cigarette litter, and include an education component about the consequences of cigarette and other tobaccorelated litter.
The CLPP begins with a scan, or physical count, of cigarette butts and other tobacco-related products in a designated area. Ash receptacles are then installed at transition points of entry, like entrances to public buildings. Two additional scans are performed, one midway through the year and a final count at the end of the program. The effectiveness of the program is measured by comparing a pre- and post-program count of cigarette butts and other tobacco products.
The grant award includes funding for portable ashtrays, or pocket ashtrays, to distribute to residents. KPB hopes to raise travelers’
HOPE frompg
awareness about the issue of proper cigarette butt disposal with messaging and marketing campaigns and by placing ash receptacles at entrances to rest stop buildings.
KPB has a partnership with TerraCycle to expand the program to include recycling and composting the cigarette butt waste. Cigarettes collected through CLPP are shipped to TerraCycle, where the various materials that make up a cigarette are separated and processed. The filters are melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make recycled industrial products, such as plastic pallets. The residual tobacco and paper are separated out and composted in a specialized process.
Cigarette butts that are thrown on the ground can contaminate soil and ground water with chemicals and heavy metals, and they can fatally affect birds, animals and marine life, which often mistake them for food. Additionally, the filters, made of cellulose acetate, never fully disappear from the environment.
4-H Beef Club announces summer show results
The Chester County 4-H Beef Club participated in the summer show on June 10.
Members exhibited commercial and Angus heifers, as well as three weight classes of steers.
Members readied their animals for the show by washing and fitting the cattle under direction from leaders and alumni. Not only did members compete in the summer show, but they also received tips for handling and showing techniques from alumna Caitlyn Fairbairn of Lisnageer Farm in Coatesville.
Judge Kim Doran of Hereford County, Md., placed the cattle presented during the show. The Senior Showmanship results had Olivia Macomber in first place, Emma Uhlman in second place and Xavier Reith in third place.
In the First Year Showmanship division, awards went to Ridan Kerner for first place, Gretchen McCafferty for second place and Maddie Kulp for third place.
Gretchen took first place and Grand Champion for January Heifers in the Commer-
cial Heifer category. In the Commercial Heifers/February category, Gretchen took first place and Reserve Champion, and Maddie took second place. Maddie also took first place for the Commercial Heifers/April category.
The Angus Heifer category saw Olivia take first place and Grand Champion for February Heifers. Emma placed first and received Grand Champion for Prospect Steers.
In the Market Steer category, Xavier was awarded first place and Grand Champion for Lightweight Steers. For Heavyweight Steers, Emma took first place and Reserve Grand Champion, while Ridan placed second.
The Pennsylvania 4-H Program educates youths about the care, management and marketing of beef animals and gives them opportunities to develop skills such as recordkeeping, goal-setting, responsibility and sportsmanship. Practicing best management while raising an animal gives members the opportunity to engage in science-based, hands-on education.

way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted.
Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not creating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

Skin Cancer Foundation offers tips on choosing, using sunscreen
As summer begins and people spend more time outdoors, the Skin Cancer Foundation reminds everyone how to use sunscreen safely and effectively as part of a sun protection routine. Although no single sun protection method is foolproof, research has shown that not only does daily sunscreen use reduce skin cancer risk, but it also helps prevent premature skin aging caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.
Selecting a sunscreen can seem overwhelming. There are many different formulations, and language on product packaging may be unfamiliar. Deciphering a sunscreen’s label is the first step to choosing the perfect product.
The first thing to consider is the sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF). One way to think about SPF is in terms of percentages. SPF 15 filters out approximately 93% of all incoming ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. SPF 30 keeps out 97%, and SPF 50 keeps out 98%. A sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 may be fine for days that a person is mostly inside, but those who are planning to spend an extended amount of time outdoors should pick a water-resistant formula with an SPF of at least 30.
The second thing to check for on a label is the term “broad spectrum.” It’s vital that a sunscreen offers broadspectrum protection, which means the product protects against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and UVB rays. Both types of UV rays penetrate the skin and cause damage that can lead to skin cancer.
Once a person has decided on his or her SPF and checked that a product has broad-spectrum protection, he or she can decide on other qualities based on personal preference and lifestyle. For example, check the list of active ingredients on the bottle. For those with sensitive skin, look for a physical filter like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These substances are less likely to cause skin reactions than chemical ingredients. Many sunscreens combine both chemical and physical filters.
People can also look for the formulation and product “feel” that is right for them. There are quality sunscreen options available in lotions, gels, sticks and sprays. Many offer tinting, antiaging ingredients, dry “sports” feel or benefits for acne-prone skin. There are now many skin care items like serums and moisturizers that include UV filters as well. The most important thing is using the product correctly.
After selecting an appropriate SPF and choosing a broadspectrum formula, understanding application is a must. Use one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount that would fit into a shot glass, to cover the entire body. For the face, a nickel-sized dollop works. Slathering on sunscreen in the morning is not enough to protect a person all day, though. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, then reapplying every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.

typically offer 40 minutes or 80 minutes of protection when in the water. No sunscreen is truly waterproof, however, so in these situations, be aware of how long the product claims to protect against moisture, and keep an eye on the clock. With reapplication, a person should use up one four-ounce bottle of sunscreen during a full day outdoors.

No single sun protection method can protect someone completely. The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended a multi-pronged approach to sun safety. While using sunscreen is a crucial part of any sun protection routine, it is also important to seek shade and cover up with clothing, including a widebrimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
