Limeville UMC’s Blessings Store To Offer Free Clothing And More BY FRANCINE FULTON
Limeville’s Blessings, a store that will offer free clothing, hygiene products, basic household items and children’s toys, will open at Limeville United Methodist Church (UMC) on Saturday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free ice pops will be provided that day, and there will also be a
gift basket fundraiser and children’s activities. “July 16 is our grand opening where people can come and check out the store,” said church member Rachael Woodring. “If you bring any kind of donation for the store, whether it’s toothpaste or loose change, you can get into a drawing to throw a pie in the face of pastor Dan Hall.” See Limeville’s Blessings pg 2
Octorara Field Hockey Team Sets Food Drive BY FRANCINE FULTON
embers of the Octorara Junior-Senior High School field hockey team will hold a food drive to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard (OAFC) on Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dutch-Way Farm Market, 365 Route 41, Gap. Shoppers will be offered a list of needed items when they enter the
M
store, and they can then drop off their donations as they exit. The items that will be collected will be used by the OAFC to put together food bags for school-age children, which will help provide food for them during the summer months when school is not in session. The nonperishable food that the pantry needs includes canned pasta products, individual cereal boxes, granola bars, peanut butter crackers and toaster pastries.
Annual Tour To Highlight Local Gardens BY MARCELLA PEYRE-FERRY
“The food cupboard will have a trailer on-site, and they will come get (the donations),” noted parent volunteer Jenny Alexander of the Octorara Field Hockey Boosters Club, which is helping with the effort. Due to low supplies, the OAFC is currently in need of other groups willing to conduct food drives. For more information, call 610-857-4000 or visit www.facebook.com/Octorara AreaFoodCupboard.
The second annual Porches and Posies Garden Tour will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9. Southern End gardens will be featured in the self-directed tour, which will benefit Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. The first edition of the event drew visitors locally and from outside the area. “Some of us had the idea this would make a great community event,” said organizer Anna Mary Barcus. “I’m just really excited to do this again this year.”

After the preview event, the store’s first day of operation will be Tuesday, July 26. Hours will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon and the first Saturday of each month from noon to 4 p.m. The store is also open by appointment. The Blessings store includes clothing for men, women and children from newborn up to teen sizes; an assortment of shoes in all sizes; clothes for men and women that are suitable for a job interview; baby equipment, including car seats; household goods like blankets, towels and sheets; and personal care items, including toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste. “Every week, we get bags and bags of donations from Fashion Sense, Ephrata,” Woodring noted. “They have given us the majority of the baby gear, toys, baby clothes and women’s clothes.” Woodring emphasized that anyone in need of assistance is welcome to visit the store, and no proof of income or residency is required. “We feel that God is using us to be able to do this ministry and that we should trust that the people coming in truly need it,” she said. Woodring has spent the last several months sorting through donations and displaying the items along with the help of church member Melanie Shivery. “Before COVID, there was a gentleman who kind of started the store but not nearly on this level. Once a year, we did a giveaway,” said Woodring. “I had this idea to open the store, and it (grew) from there. Then Melanie jumped on board. We are both moms, and we know how expensive it is to get kids’ clothes.” The store is located at the church but has its own private entrance. Shivery created a sign that hangs in the window of the Blessings store, which includes the church’s mission statement, “Obey God. Love Jesus and Make a Difference.” Even though the store is not officially open, it has already helped people in need. “In the month of June, we already had seven people come in for appointments. Yesterday was a family of 10,” said Shivery. Donations for the store are accepted during operating hours or by appointment. For more information about donating

The more you (garden), the better you get at it.” The garden tour event was created last year as a fundraiser to help Chestnut Level Church with the cost of recent renovations to the sanctuary. “ We had some major sanctuary renovations done in 2021 and 2022,” Barcus said. “It’s a church-sponsored event, but it’s really for the entire community.” The garden tour will run rain or shine on July 8 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on July 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants may complete their tour in one day or take a leisurely pace over both days to enjoy all 12 stops. Day-of-tour tickets will be available at the church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville. There will be separate prices for adults and for children age 10 and under. This year’s Porches and Posies Garden Tour will feature 12 new garden stops, which will display a variety of garden styles and growing conditions, including a cut flower garden, examples of outdoor living and two Amish gardens. “We try to have a nice assortment of styles, realistic but inspirational and achievable,” Barcus said. One of the gardens on the tour is at the home of Kendra Herr. Features of her yard include a small barn, a stone patio with a fire pit and a screened-in porch attached to the home and deck. Herr’s property is full of flower beds planted mostly with perennials and shrubs. She also enjoys container gardening and has pots of colorful annual arrangements throughout the property that contain plants such as Lantana, Coleus and Setcresea Purple Heart. Because areas of her yard include both full sun and almost full shade, Herr is able to use all kinds of plants and flowers. Campus. The exercises covered search and rescue, indoor firefighting, fire attack types, auto fires, dumpster fires, and stages of fires. All exercises represent the final steps needed to complete the 188-hour classroom and practical skills certification. Chester County’s current Firefighter I class includes 17 men
and two women, the majority of whom are college students who are adding the first responder certification to their other qualifications. More firefighters are needed across the state and the nation. In Chester County, most firefighters are volunteers, which adds to the challenges of
recruitment and retention of firefighters. Matt Fink, Chester County Department of Emergency Services fire training officer and leader of the Firefighter I course, noted that the Firefighter I course is offered throughout the year.

guidelines for people of all ages. Adults - including older adults and those with chronic conditions or disabilities - should get between 150 and 300 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity. Explore chair exercises. Just because you are seated doesn’t mean you can’t get a workout. Seated chair exercises can work various muscle groups. Seated arm rows, tummy twists, overhead arm raises, hand squeezes with a tennis ball, inner thigh squeezes, leg lifts and extensions, and many other exercises can be customized to be performed in a chair.
Mind-body exercises are an option. Elder Gym, a fitness-from-home service for seniors, suggests exercises like tai chi and yoga for those with limited mobility. These exercises integrate awareness of body movement with the exercise through coordinated breathing. The exercises encourage people to focus on slow, fluid movements and deep stretching.
Work out in the water. Exercising in the water can assist with movement and reduce strain on the body. The Arthritis Foundation says the water’s buoyancy supports body weight, which minimizes stress on joints and can alleviate pain. Water provides gentle resistance as well - up to 12 times the resistance of air. That means it’s
Seniors and others with limited mobility are advised to first discuss fitness regimens with a physician to get a green light to proceed. Then regimens can be started gradually and altered to become more vigorous as the body acclimates to exercise. People can increase duration and frequency as their strength and endurance builds.

Resistance bands are low-cost gear that can offer high-impact opportunities for building muscle, staying fit, and increasing mobility. Resistance bands can be used in lieu of hand weights for many exercises and can be suitable for those who find barbells and dumbbells challenging to maneuver.

The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time people reach their late 30s and early 40s, many of them are balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities may be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 likely recognize that it’s not always easy to make new friends, even though it’s beneficial to have supportive relationships in one’s golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family.
Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during one’s school days, but the following strategies can help to build new friendships. - Identify interests. Fifty-somethings who have spent the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested a person is in a given activity, the more likely he or she is to stick with it and possibly meet like-minded individuals who may become friends. - Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it See New Friends pg 7

Paying in cash, whether it’s with paper currency or a debit card, ensures you’re not digging yourself into debt. - Re-examine your housing situation. Adults 50 and over who purchased their home in their late 20s or early 30s are likely nearing the maturity date on their mortgages. If so, paying a little extra toward the principal each month will help to pay off the mortgage a good deal earlier than paying the same amount you’ve been paying for years. Although paying extra money each month may not seem like reducing one’s financial load, it will do so considerably over time. For example, the financial experts at Wells Fargo note that individuals with a fixed-rate mortage loan of $200,000 at 4% can cut the term of that loan by more than four and a half years by paying as little as $100 extra each month toward their principal. Homeowners over 50 who have already paid off a significant percentage of their mortgage loans could bring these loans to maturity much sooner if they start paying more toward principal now. By the time people reach their 50th birthday, many have begun to imagine what their life in retirement may look like. People may seek ways to reduce their financial load in anticipation of the day when they will no longer work. Cutting back need not be complicated, and the following are some simple ways for individuals to save money. - Address unsecured debt. Unsecured debt, which can include credit card balances and medical bills, tends to carry higher interest rates than debts that carry a collateral requirement. According to the Federal Reserve, roughly 12.5% of individuals over 50 still have student loan debt, which is another type of unsecured debt. If possible, people over 50 should pay off these debts immediately or make their best effort to pay extra each month so the debts are paid off as soon as possible. - Pay in cash. It’s not enough to simply pay off unsecured debt like consumer credit. It’s also important to stop accruing additional debt. Individuals over 50 should resist the temptation to use their credit cards, instead paying with cash or debit cards. Credit card debt is often characterized as a problem for young consumers, but a 2021 report from ValuePenguin

Food Drive from pg 1
R085671
In addition to holding the food drive, the field hockey team recently completed its annual clothing drive. “With the help of the community, we collected over 400 bags of clothes that will be distributed throughout the U.S. and abroad to those in need,” said Alexander, noting the clothing was donated to Greenthreads. “(The organization) collects mostly clothes and shoes as well as fabric and stuffed animals.” The field hockey team held a clothing drive from Feb. 9 through May 25. “We set (the clothing drive) up after the season is over at our concession stand,” explained Ashley Destephano, a member of the Boosters Club. “We set up a day - Wednesdays where people could drop off clothes until 6 p.m. and one of us would go out and pick it up and put it inside the concession stand. This year it was really filled. We pick a day, and the truck comes and (team members) help load the bags onto the truck.” “It’s something the team has done for the past four or five years,” she continued. “The community really gets involved. This year was the biggest (quantity) as far as bags, which was exciting. It’s (an effort) we want to continue.” “ We nearly doubled our collections from last year and are so thankful to the community,” added Alexander. “The funds raised from this event will help our girls go to extra training camps in their offseason and provide extra equipment for them as well.” The clothing drive and food collection is part of an effort to promote community service among the team members. “We want them to give back to the community in different ways and work as a team to do that,” Destephano said. “For them, it is a team-building and bonding experience and also doing something good for the community.” For more information about the team and the upcoming food drive, visit www.facebook.com/octorara fieldhockey.
