Gleaning Garden Dedicated To Sen. Dinniman BY FRANCINE FULTON
The gleaning garden at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore, which provides fresh produce for clients of the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), was recently dedicated to retired state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who founded the Chester County Gleaning Program in 1996.
Gleaning is based on the biblical concept that the farmer should give some of the crops in his fields to those in need. The book of Leviticus states, “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor.” See Gleaning Garden pg 5

Growing Produce At The Parkesburg Library BY FRANCINE FULTON
omatoes, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce and herbs like thyme, basil, dill and oregano are just some of the crops being grown in raised-bed gardens located at the Parkesburg Library. Ryan McCaughan, garden educator for the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), and local teen organic farmer Armen Caravantes, volunteer garden coordinator, held an open house recently to make others aware of the community garden program at the library and to offer information about planting vegetables. Early in the season, the library offered raised bed spaces to community members on a first-come, first-served basis.
accept anything at the food bank, but we are sending it back out to the food pantries,” said McCaughan. “It is basically skipping a step if you can take it directly to the food pantries. You are saving time, which is huge when it comes to produce. Produce obviously has a shelf life. What Armen is doing here is exactly right - getting it to the local food cupboards right away.” McCaughan explained that gardens like the one at the library can grow crops well into fall. “Depending on the weather, you can grow plants if you have some row covers to create a greenhouse or mini tunnel. You put hoops down and you create an arch. That will increase the temperature of the soil and allow you to grow (plants) throughout the winter,” McCaughan said. “It’s called a season extension.”
The Fund for Women and Girls is now accepting nominations for the 2021 Gladys Black Woman of Distinction Award and the 2021 Corporate Champion of Change Award. Named in memory of the fund’s late board member, the Woman of Distinction Award recognizes a Chester County woman who has “contributed to the advancement of other women in professional and leadership roles.”

“Every (bed) except for two have been planted by the public,” Armen explained, noting that one garden bed has been designated as a demonstration garden, which will be used for free community gardening classes. Although gardeners get to keep whatever they harvest from their individual plants, in past years, some vegetables grown in the garden have been taken into the library for free distribution to library patrons. Armen added that this year’s garden includes 10 tomato plants whose yield will go to library patrons and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. However, gardeners who would like to help their neighbors in need are encouraged to donate their produce directly to a local food pantry. “We encourage people to donate to the closest possible food pantry. Patterson has volunteered her time and talents to create the gardens at the post office, which she passes every day while walking her dog, Lucy. “About four years ago, someone was (taking care) of the garden and she moved on, and it was looking kind of sad. There was nothing but weeds,” said Patterson. “I took it on as a community project.” After requesting permission from Brian Hess, the officer in charge at the Christiana Post Office, Patterson weeded the beds and laid down a layer of woodchips as mulch. She filled the gardens with flowers such as bubblegum petunias, daylilies, nastur-

tiums, creeping Jenny, coneflowers, zinnias, hostas, irises and dahlias, as well as rocks and ornaments, including a ceramic ladybug. She purchased most of the flowers herself, but residents have donated plants as well. The garden is filled with perennials so that the flowers come up on their own each year. “The goal is to get this garden living on its own - to be self-reliant,” Patterson said. In addition to rocks and several United States flags, there are three fossils in the garden. Visitors can pick them up to see former living organisms etched in the stone, including a snail. “I am a (former) teacher and I found these in my house. I thought it would be a teaching thing,” Patterson said. There are three birdhouses in the front garden. One is shaped like a

Another birdhouse that will be put in place is yellow, representing Hertz Systems. Hess is pleased with the garden, noting that blooming flowers make for a pleasant way to greet those who visit the post office, located at 19 N. Bridge St., Christiana. “We have received many compliments on how nice the flower beds look,” he said. “Several customers have stopped in just to say how beautiful the flower beds look, and they don’t even need any postal services. “Through her passion for plants and willingness to invest in the local community, (Patterson) has made a positive impact on the Christiana community,” Hess added.
The CCFB grows fresh produce at Springton Manor Farm on one acre of fenced-in field space, in an 80-foot tunnel and in 32 raised-bed gardens. Seedlings are also started in Springton Manor Farm’s heated greenhouse. “In the high tunnel we grow crops all year round,” McCaughan said, noting that cool season crops include collard greens, kale, beets, spinach and mustard greens. “In the winter, you can walk in the tunnel and it can be 40 or 50 degrees when it is minus 10 degrees outside.” McCaughan noted that conditions have been ideal this summer for growing vegetables. “I am growing a new variety of tomatoes called atomic grapes. They look like reverse raindrops (and) they have crazy colors,” he said. “I never had them before. It’s always fun to grow a new variety.” The Parkesburg Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. Local Author Publishes Picture Book Children’s author Iris Gray Dowling of Cochranville recently announced the release of her newest picture book, titled “Open Your Eyes (Discover the Cecropia Moth).” According to the author, the book is particularly designed for elementary-age children, who will learn the scientific facts about moths and butterflies that live in the eastern United States, particularly in Pennsylvania. “The story was inspired when my grandson found a Cecropia moth on the street in Parkesburg. He brought it to me knowing that I had a lifetime of studying moths and butterflies,” Dowling explained. “Of course, I told him the name of the moth and that it was the largest one living in the United States. The Cecropia has a wingspread of over six inches.” She noted that William, the grandson who found the moth, gave it to her when he joined the United States Navy two years ago, hoping that she would include it in a story. “This story was born out of his wishes. He is the central character, but is portrayed much younger,” Dowling noted. “In the book, the siblings are elementary ages and go with their father on a library visit particularly to study about this moth but find out how moths differ from butterflies and how moths, being nocturnal, live much differently.”
Dowling reported that William is currently serving on a submarine in the Pacific region. “His twin brother, Robert, helped with the story by listening many times to the various versions and making suggestions to help see it to completion,” she noted. For this book, Dowling personally illustrated a Cecropia moth on the cover and elsewhere in the book, along with other large moths and butterflies. “This is the way I spent many hours during the COVID-19 pandemic - writing, drawing and coloring the illustrations in this book, as well as the backgrounds for their display,” said Dowling. The book also contains several pages of game ideas, a glossary, additional facts, diagrams, a devotional on moths and bibliography information. “These large (Cecropia) moths only live about a week just to mate and lay eggs. This contributes to the fact that many people have not seen them in their lifetime,” Dowling explained. “The book is definitely scientific and would be an interesting study for homeschoolers, as well as students in any school.” This is Dowling’s 17th book and the sixth picture book she has written. Her other books have offered nature stories, school and church program ideas and puppet skits. She also wrote “History of Churches and Worship Groups in the Oxford Area” and “Mission Stories,” which details true stories from people in the

pertaining to the histories of Scottish immigrants and Bart Township schools. Shenk has been researching her family background for more than 50 years. Computers were not yet in widespread use when she began her work, so she made numerous trips to libraries, courthouses, and churches. Whenever she came across a unique finding, she made a hard copy. Her primary documentation includes birth and death certificates, land grants, wills, and more. As a result of her extensive research, Shenk published two books in the early 2000s: one on Eckman family history and the other on Pickle family history. Shenk estimates that roughly 75% of current Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church members are connected to her genealogy collection. J. Barry Girvin, curator of the Schoolroom Museum, accepted Shenk’s genealogy collection into the archives. The genealogy collection will have a bookcase of its own, which is currently being made specifically for the collection. “I think this is a worthwhile collection for the museum,” stated Shenk. “I hope a lot of people will be interested in this collection because of their family history.” In addition to Shenk’s contribution, J. Barry; his wife, Shirley; and their son, John, will donate their own genealogy collections to the museum. They will gift two large books containing extensive histories of the Welks and Girvins. J. Barry said he hopes to open the Schoolroom Museum in September for one day a week. Currently, the museum is open for visitors, but only by appointment. have three sides done at this point,” said Prange, who noted that the next day thunderstorms were predicted. “Friday or Monday we will be back,” said Prange. “We will prime the last side, put finish coats on, and then start trimming out.” Prange noted that the paint should continue to look good for about eight to 10 years. Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer of the Gap Town Clock Association, said that she let Prange choose the colors for the clock tower, which are traditional white with green trim on the window surrounds, the bottom and top of the tower, and the cornice at the bell housing. She said the group had considered maroon trim, but
Before Lenny Prange retired from working as a painter, he had a request. “A long time ago, I said to my boss, ‘If you ever get a chance to paint the Gap Town Clock, go after it because I would like to say I painted that,’” recalled Prange. Standing in front of the 65-foot tower that houses the 1872 Seth Thomas clock, Prange said Phil Hursh of Hursh Painting Company remembered the request. On June 2, with about a month left to work, Prange spent the day high in the air priming the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap. “We

Prange was concerned that would fade too quickly. On April 9, Hursh contacted Stern and told her about the idea to paint the clock tower. “Phil (Hursh) donated all the paint and all the labor,” noted Stern. “We were really blessed with that.” Stern relayed the history of the clock, pointing out that it was originally placed on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. “The clock was located (in the building) along historic Newport Pike, which is now Route 41,” explained Stern, who added that freight was hauled along the route from Tidewater Harbor to Newport, Del. about me, but about those who worked on this Gleaning Program from the very beginning,” he said. He noted that raised bed gleaning gardens have been planted throughout the county at both schools and churches. The first raised garden was at Pocopson Home, where the senior residents could grow food for the program. Springton Manor’s gardens include one acre of fenced-in field space and a demonstration garden, now named for Dinniman, which has 32 raised beds. Seedlings are also started in the site’s greenhouse. Last year, nearly 18,000 pounds of produce came from Springton Manor Farm’s field, and nearly 1,500 pounds came from the demonstration garden. Dinniman said that his philosophy about gleaning is the same as it was when the program was founded 25 years ago. “We are not going to be judged by God or by history about how wealthy we were or are,” he said. “We will be judged if we are good and decent people, people of faith and people of justice who understand that when you have an abundant harvest, it’s your responsibility to share that harvest with The raised bed garden at Springton Manor Farm was recently dedicated to retired state Sen. these years,” she stated. “Since 1986, VEP has grown and evolved to change the lives of thousands of immigrants and newcomers on the path to learn English in pursuit of the American dream.” “VEP does more than teach the English language,” added Spencer. “It helps people understand how to sustain their lives in the midst of a new culture - a different world.” Chester County Commissioner Michele Kichline, who is also a member of the VEP advisory committee, offered remarks during the virtual program and presented a citation to VEP on behalf of the commissioners. VEP’s first Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to tutor Shannon Almquist by VEP executive director Terri Potrako. “(Shannon) has been tutoring for 35 years ... and (was) one of the original 14
(VEP) volunteers,” said Potrako. “She has had multiple students and concurrent students.” Almquist is currently tutoring a student named Yameilha, who was featured during the virtual program, expressing her gratitude for the VEP program, which has helped her to greatly improve her Englishspeaking skills. There was also a tribute to the late Betsy Hawkes, a volunteer tutor, and her husband, Bob Hawkes. “When Bob passed, he made a significant gift to us (through a bequest). It enabled us to (stay) open during the pandemic,” Potrako said. “Not only was he a financial support for us, but Bob was also always out in the community recommending (the VEP). He would make referrals and brought adult students to us.” See VEP pg 6

John Kane. Grabicki presented Dinniman with a citation from Kane and a letter of congratulations from Gov. Tom Wolf. Dinniman explained that he developed the program after reading a report by Philabundance, which stated that people in Chester County were suffering from hunger. “(The report) didn’t make much sense to me. Hunger is a solvable problem,” he stated. “There are many problems that are not easy to solve, but hunger is not one of them. It simply requires the will to solve it.” Dinniman talked about the history of the program and how it evolved through the years, culminating with the formation of the CCFB in 2009. “I hope that today is not just

Rappelling For A Cause: VisionCorps Sets Eye Drop 2021
FENCING SPECIALISTS
BY FRANCINE FULTON
“There is no practice. Only determination,” said Chester County resident Natanya Sortland, who will rappel 10 stories on Friday, July 9, in support of Eye Drop 2021, VisionCorps’ signature fundraiser during which participants rappel 120 feet from the roof of the Holiday Inn in downtown Lancaster to the ground, after committing to a fundraising minimum. Sortland said she is committed to the feat despite her fear of heights as part of an effort to raise funds and awareness for VisionCorps after the nonprofit organization helped her when she became visually impaired. Sortland’s vision was damaged after she suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a condition that often

The program concluded with a live conversation from Los Angeles with author Helena Ku Rhee, who read from her book, “The Paper Kingdom.” Following a questionand-answer session, she stated, “I am amazed by this organization and everything that you have achieved.” The evening was also a fundraiser for VEP. Attendees paid a registration fee to attend the virtual ceremony, and money was also raised through a 35-day challenge held from May 15 to June 18. “You could participate by donating $35 and doing something for someone

The Eye Drop was canceled in 2020 during the pandemic, but in 2019 120 people took part in the event, some with vision loss and some sighted, according to Carol Gifford, VisionCorps community relations specialist. “(Eye Drop) is run by a group of professionals,” Gifford noted. “They are in charge of making sure the entire process is safe.” Although Sortland’s limited vision is blurry, she will be aware of the building’s height. “The first time the event came around, I said, ‘No way,’ but (this year) I realized that I have to do this because I need to make sure that other people get this help,” said Sortland. Sortland plans to dress as Lady Liberty since the event is close to the July 4 holiday and to represent her newly independent life. “I will not (back out),” she said. “My determination to get help (to the people who need it) will be stronger than my fear.” People who would like to financially support Sortland’s effort may visit https://give.visioncorps.net/natanya for more information. VisionCorps’ Eye Drop event will be held at the Holiday Inn Lancaster, 26 E. Chestnut St., beginning at 9 a.m. All proceeds will help fund VisionCorps’ prevention, rehabilitation and employment services, which are offered to those who are blind or have low vision in Adams, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties. There are still open spots to join and rappel. For more information and to register, visit www.EyeDrop2021.org.

results in death or significant impairments. “I became visually disabled a couple of years ago. (As a consequence), I was cutting my fingers, burning my hands and I almost got hit by a car. I could not read emails or pay bills,” said Sortland, whose coordinator of care recommended that she contact VisionCorps for help. “I was really lucky that I finally gave VisionCorps a call. They gave me a caseworker and I told her about all the things that I was struggling with. She said that I would be OK and get my independence back and (find) a new way to live.” VisionCorps helped Sortland learn to overcome the obstacles that she encountered on a daily basis. “They came in and taught me how to use technology, cook and organize. Someone taught me to use my cane not only at home, but anywhere I needed to go. They offered me the world,” she stated. “If I can’t figure out how to do something, they can help me.”

Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties,
with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their best-before dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.
