Before Lenny Prange retired from working as a painter, he had a request. “A long time ago, I said to my boss, ‘If you ever get a chance to paint the Gap Town Clock, go after it because I would like to say I painted that,’” recalled Prange. Standing in front of the 65-foot

Registration will be begin at 7:30 a.m.; the motorcycle ride will depart promptly at 9 a.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at registration. The ride will travel through portions of Lancaster and Chester counties. There will be a stop at Herr Foods, where water and snacks will be available. The riders will return to Gap Community Center at approximately 11:30 a.m., where they will enjoy a barbecue chicken lunch. A donation fee will be charged per rider, which is payable on the day of the event. Preregistration is not required. Nonriders are also invited to participate in the lunch only by paying the registration fee. All proceeds will benefit the Cpl. Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Scholarship Fund. Brandon was killed in 2006 at the age of 25 while serving in Al Anbar,
is the school board and superintendent secretary for the Octorara Area School District. “To date, we have awarded $131,000 in scholarships.” The scholarships are intended to finance the cost of items that are not provided by the military, such as tickets home to see family. The ride has grown through the years, and it raises between $8,000 and $10,000 for the scholarship fund. “The first year there were 80 bikes; now, we average 160 riders,” Hardy said. “There are many veterans on the ride as well. We always recognize them prior to the ride. We ask people who served to raise their hand.” Brandon’s fellow service members travel from as far away as Spokane, Wash., where he was stationed, as well as Ohio, Pittsburgh and Tulsa, Okla., to participate. “It’s a bittersweet day for sure, but two of the guys were with Brandon that night he was killed. Now, they are like sons to us,” Jill said. “It warms this mother’s heart to see them have a good time and interact with our kids. They are family for sure.” For more information about Brandon and the ride, visit www.cplbrandonhardy.com.

Iraq, while a member of the United States Marine Corps. Riders will travel past Brandon’s grave in Nickel Mines, where they will go slowly in tribute. According to Jill Hardy, Brandon’s mother, the ride took place in 2020 during the pandemic, but it was moved to the Gap Community Center to allow for more social distancing. “We did it a little differently. We offered grab-and-go lunches, and the doughnuts were bagged,” she said. “We still had a good turnout, and people enjoyed it.” She noted that the same safety precautions will be in place this year. Local fire companies and police departments will be on hand to ensure the riders’ safety. Residents of area neighborhoods are welcome to cheer on the riders as they pass by. “We pray about the weather and the safety of the riders,” Hardy said. “Weather is everything when it comes to motorcycles.” Jill and her husband, Warren, started the ride and the scholarship fund as a way to honor their son, a graduate of the Octorara Area School District.”We give $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are entering the military,” said Jill who
tower that houses the 1872 Seth Thomas clock, Prange said Phil Hursh of Hursh Painting Company remembered the request. On June 2, with about a month left to work, Prange spent the day high in the air priming the tower, which is located at the intersection of Route 41 and Bridge Street in Gap. “We have three sides done at this point,” said Prange, who noted that the next day thunderstorms were predicted. “Friday or Monday we will be back,” said Prange. “We will prime the last side, put finish coats on, and then start trimming out.” Prange noted that the paint should continue to look good for about eight to 10 years. Kathy Stern, secretary/treasurer of the Gap Town Clock Association, said that she let Prange choose the colors for the clock tower, which are traditional white with green trim on the window surrounds, the bottom and top of the tower, and the cornice at the bell housing. She said the group had considered maroon trim, but Prange was concerned that would fade too quickly.

Tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, strawberries, cucumbers, lettuce and herbs like thyme, basil, dill and oregano are just some of the crops being grown in raised-bed gardens located at the Parkesburg Library. Ryan McCaughan, garden educator for the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), and local teen organic farmer Armen Caravantes, volunteer garden coordinator, held an open house recently to make others aware of the community garden program at the library and to offer information about planting vegetables. Early in the season, the library offered raised bed spaces to community members on a first-come, first-served basis. “Every (bed) except for two have been planted by the public,” Armen explained, noting that one garden bed has been designated as a demonstration garden, which will be used for free community gardening classes. Although gardeners get to keep whatever they harvest from their individual plants, in past years, some vegetables grown in the garden have been taken into the library for free distribution to library patrons. Armen added that this year’s garden includes 10 tomato plants whose yield will go to library patrons and the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. However, gardeners who would like to help their neighbors in need are encouraged to donate their produce directly to a local food pantry. “We encourage people to donate to the closest possible food pantry. We accept anything at the food bank, but we are sending it back out to the food pantries,” said McCaughan. “It is basically skipping a step if you can take it directly to the food pantries. You are saving time, which is huge when it comes to produce. Produce obviously has a shelf life. What Armen is doing here is exactly right getting it to the local food cupboards right away.” McCaughan explained that gardens like the one at the library can grow crops well into fall. “Depending on the weather, you can grow plants if you have some row covers

to create a greenhouse or mini tunnel. You put hoops down and you create an arch. That will increase the temperature of the soil and allow you to grow (plants) throughout the winter,” McCaughan said. “It’s called a season extension.” The CCFB grows fresh produce at Springton Manor Farm on one acre of fenced-in field space, in an 80foot tunnel and in 32 raised-bed gardens. Seedlings are also started in Springton Manor Farm’s heated greenhouse. “In the high tunnel we grow crops all year round,” McCaughan said, noting that cool season crops include collard greens, kale, beets, spinach and mustard greens. “In the winter, you can walk in the tunnel and it can be 40 or 50 degrees when it is minus 10 degrees outside.” McCaughan noted that conditions
have been ideal this summer for growing vegetables. “I am growing a new variety of tomatoes called atomic grapes. They look like reverse raindrops (and) they have crazy colors,” he said. “I never had them before. It’s always fun to grow
a new variety.” The Parkesburg Library is located at 105 West St., Parkesburg. For more information about the community garden program, contact the library at 610-857-5165 or parkesburglibrarygarden@gmail.com.

OCTORARA EDITION
COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition -
BY COURTNEY MENGEL
Sandra Shenk, archivist of the Schoolroom Museum at Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville, will gift her extensive genealogy collection to the Schoolroom Museum. Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church is known as the oldest Covenanter Presbyterian church in North America, with a history dating back to 1754. Its attached oneroom school currently houses archives pertaining to the histories of Scottish immigrants and Bart Township schools. Shenk has been researching her family background for more than 50 years. Computers were not yet in widespread use when she began her work, so she made numerous trips to libraries, courthouses, and churches. Whenever she came across a unique finding, she made a hard copy. Her primary documentation includes birth and death certificates, land grants, wills, and more. As a result of her extensive research, Shenk published two books in the early 2000s: one on Eckman family history and the other on Pickle family history.
Shenk estimates that roughly 75% of current Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church members are connected to her genealogy collection. J. Barry Girvin, curator of the Schoolroom Museum, accepted Shenk’s genealogy collection into the archives. The genealogy collection will have a bookcase of its own, which is currently being made specifically for the collection. “I think this is a worthwhile collection for the museum,” stated Shenk. “I hope a lot of people will be interested in this collection because of their family history.” In addition to Shenk’s contribution, J. Barry; his wife, Shirley; and their son, John, will donate their own genealogy collections to the museum. They will gift two large books containing extensive histories of the Welks and Girvins. J. Barry said he hopes to open the Schoolroom Museum in September for one day a week. Currently, the museum is open for visitors, but only by appointment. Solar Energy Society, which showcases solar-powered homes and buildings across the nation. “We are inviting businesses large and small, schools and houses of worship to showcase what we can do in our own community to harness free energy from the sun to generate electricity, warm and cool our buildings, heat water and (reduce) monthly utility bills,” said Nora Ziegler, a retired public school teacher and a Chester County resident who is coordinating the Chester County portion of the Clean Energy Tour. She noted that the tour was held in person in 2019, but that it moved to a virtual format in 2020 because of the pandemic. Organizers decided to make this year’s tour virtual as well. “2020 was the first time that the solar tour had ever (gone

virtual). We did have about 15 homes last year, but we are working hard to get other types of buildings this year,” said Ziegler. Previous years have highlighted Camphill Village Kimberton Hills, whose solar system powers several of its buildings, including its café. Several municipal facilities were on the tour in 2019, including those in Uwchlan Township, which used state incentives to install electric vehicle charging stations at its township office. In southern Chester County, the tour included two large solar installations at Longwood Gardens and Marlboro Mushrooms. “Last year, we (highlighted) a family business - Lani Ice in Ludwigs Corner, which is solar powered,” said Ziegler. Lani Ice offers smoothies, shaved ice other products from its solar-powered trailer. Those interested in participating on the tour will be asked to submit photos and a threeminute video about their use of solar power. Technical help will
be provided if needed. This year, a live, in-person event at the West Vincent Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 25, will serve as the kickoff to the Chester County Clean Energy Tour. The virtual tour, with videos and photo presentations, will be available at www.nationalsolartour.org, starting on Saturday, Oct. 2. “Chester County ranks second in solar installations in the state,” Ziegler pointed out. “For the last two years, we have led the nation in local clean energy open houses. People who are interested in the concept and don’t know that much about it (are encouraged to participate). Maybe they are thinking about using solar at their homes.” Those interested in showcasing their use of solar power in the tour are asked to complete an interest form at www.nationalsolartour.org. The Clean Energy Tour is free and open to the public, and participating sites also do not have to pay a fee. For more details, contact Ziegler at noraziegler@me.com.

A virtual Evening of Inspiration was held recently to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Volunteer English Program (VEP), which provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults looking to improve their English language skills and their understanding of American culture. A highlight of the program, which was hosted by VEP advisory committee member Leon Spencer, was a performance of “Perseus” by the West Chester Area School District Senior Strings, conducted by Katrina Kelly. The program included an address by Rep. Carolyn Comitta. “I want to recognize the Volunteer English Program on its 35th anniversary and I want to thank each of you for your time, energy and resources to support this important initiative all these years,” she stated. “Since 1986, VEP has grown and evolved to change the lives of thousands of immigrants and newcomers on the path to learn English in pursuit of the American dream.” “VEP does more than teach the English language,” added Spencer. “It helps people understand how to sustain their lives in the midst of a new culture - a different world.” Chester County Commissioner Michele Kichline, who is also a member of the VEP advisory committee, offered remarks during the virtual program and presented a citation to VEP on behalf of the commissioners. VEP’s first Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to tutor Shannon Almquist by VEP executive director Terri Potrako. “(Shannon) has been tutoring for 35 years ... and (was) one of the original 14 (VEP) volunteers,” said Potrako. “She has

There was also a tribute to the late Betsy Hawkes, a volunteer tutor, and her husband, Bob Hawkes. “When Bob passed, he made a significant gift to us (through a bequest). It enabled us to (stay) open during the pandemic,” Potrako said. “Not only was he a financial support for us, but Bob was also always out in the community recommending (the VEP). He would make referrals and brought adult students to us.” The program concluded with a live conversation from Los Angeles with author Helena Ku Rhee, who read from her book, “The Paper Kingdom.” Following a questionand-answer session, she stated, “I am amazed by this organization and everything that you have achieved.” The evening was also a fundraiser for VEP. Attendees paid a registration fee to attend the virtual ceremony, and money was also raised through a 35-day challenge held from May 15 to June 18. “You could participate by donating $35 and doing something for someone else or to support yourself, like walking, writing to friend or reading a chapter a day,” Potrako said. “All those monies raised led up to the Evening of Inspiration, which is our traditional spring fundraiser.” For more information about VEP, including how to volunteer as a tutor, visit www.volunteerenglish.org or www.facebook.com/VolunteerEng or call 610-918-8222.

Gleaning Garden Dedicated To Sen. Dinniman BY FRANCINE FULTON
The gleaning garden at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore, which provides fresh produce for clients of the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), was recently dedicated to retired state Sen. Andy Dinniman, who founded the Chester County Gleaning Program in 1996. Gleaning is based on the biblical concept that the farmer should give some of the crops in his fields to those in need. The book of Leviticus states, “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor.” The newly installed sign at the garden reads, “This garden is dedicated to Senator Andrew E. Dinni-
man for 28 years of public service to the citizens of Chester County. During his years as a public servant, Andy created and developed Chester County’s Gleaning Program, growing food for those in need. Chester County Food Bank’s successful Farming & Garden Education Programs owe their roots to the Gleaning Program established by Senator Dinniman in 1996.” The garden dedication ceremony was hosted by Chester County Commissioners Marian Moskowitz, Josh Maxwell and Michelle Kichline. Also in attendance were about 100 community members and gleaning program supporters and volunteers; Dinniman’s daughter, Lexi; Bob McNeil, founding and current board chair of the CCFB; and Steve Grabicki, Dinniman’s former chief of staff,
who now serves as operations director for Sen. John Kane. Grabicki presented Dinniman with a citation from Kane and a letter of congratulations from Gov. Tom Wolf. Dinniman explained that he developed the program after reading a report by Philabundance, which
stated that people in Chester County were suffering from hunger. “(The report) didn’t make much sense to me. Hunger is a solvable problem,” he stated. “There are many problems that are not easy to solve, but hunger is not one of them. It simply requires the will to solve it.”
Dinniman talked about the history of the program and how it evolved through the years, culminating with the formation of the CCFB in 2009. “I hope that today is not just about me, but about those who worked on this Gleaning Program from the very
beginning,” he said. He noted that raised bed gleaning gardens have been planted throughout the county at both schools and churches. The first raised garden was at Pocopson Home, where the senior residents could grow food for the program. See Garden pg 6

On April 9, Hursh contacted Stern and told her about the idea to paint the clock tower. “Phil (Hursh) donated all the paint and all the labor,” noted Stern. “We were really blessed with that.” Stern relayed the history of the clock, pointing out that it was originally placed on Penn Monument Hall (now home to the Town Clock Cheese Shoppe), located across Bridge Street from the clock. The brick building was named Penn Monument Hall because William Penn had made a historic visit to the area. “The clock was located (in the building) along historic Newport Pike, which is now Route 41,” explained Stern, who added that freight was hauled along the route from Tidewater Harbor to Newport, Del. Fifteen years after the clock was placed, the building was taken over by the sheriff. “Concerned towns-
Decker-Stackhouse people stole the clock, and hid it in a nearby ice house,” said Stern. “In 1892, a 65-foot tower was built for the clock.” In 1953, the Gap Town Clock Association was formed when the clock tower appeared to be doomed by the widening of Route 41. “Once again, the citizens of the area banded together and moved the tower 75 feet to its present location,” said Stern. “It’s an interesting story.” Clock Association member John Hilton winds the clock regularly, with association president Glenn Kendig filling in when Hilton is unavailable. “John’s father used to wind it before he passed,” shared Stern. A nominal fee, which helps to preserve the clock tower, is asked of Gap Town Clock Association members. Those who would like more information may call 484-340-0116.
William and Patricia Decker of Atglen have announced the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Decker of Atglen, to Luke Stackhouse of Parkesburg. The bride-elect graduated from Octorara High School in 2009 and from the practical nursing program at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in 2021. Mr. Stackhouse is the son of Warren and Jeanie Stackhouse of Parkesburg. He graduated from Octorara High School in 2007 and
graduated from the cabinet making and carpentry program at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. A June 2022 wedding is planned.
Garden from pg 5 Springton Manor’s gardens include one acre of fenced-in field space and a demonstration garden, now named for Dinniman, which has 32 raised beds. Seedlings are also started in the site’s greenhouse. Last year, nearly 18,000 pounds of produce came from Springton Manor Farm’s field, and nearly 1,500 pounds came from the demonstration garden. Dinniman said that his philosophy about gleaning is the same as

it was when the program was founded 25 years ago. “We are not going to be judged by God or by history about how wealthy we were or are,” he said. “We will be judged if we are good and decent people, people of faith and people of justice who understand that when you have an abundant harvest, it’s your responsibility to share that harvest with your brothers and your sisters.”

Individuals and families in Chester County who are facing challenges in paying rent and utility bills due to the pandemic can receive help through the Chester County Emergency Rent & Utility Assistance Program. Earlier this year, Chester County received $34.5 million from the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to help cover emergency rental and utility bills for individuals and families who have been severely impacted by COVID-19. The rent and utility grants are available to individuals and families in Chester County who are obligated to pay rent and who qualify for unemployment or have experienced financial hardship due either directly or indirectly to the COVID-19 outbreak; demonstrate a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability; and have a household income at or below 80% of the area median, which is $52,950 for a family of one and $75,600 for a family of four. The amount may be subject to change. Those who are eligible can use the emergency rent and utility funding to pay for outstanding rent, electricity, gas, water and sewer and energy costs such as fuel oil or propane over a 15-month period. To apply for funding, residents should call 211 and request rent and utility assistance. Five housing organizations - Friends Association, the Housing Authority of Chester County, Human Services Inc., Open Hearth Inc., and Oxford Neighborhood Services - will work with the applicants to process payments to landlords and utility providers. More information can be found at www.chesco.org /4905/Rent-Assistance. Readers may also visit this site to view a virtual Chester County Emergency Rent & Utility Assistance Program webinar that was held in April and spells out who qualifies and how to apply.
