Wizard Faire To Benefit Atglen Library By Marcella Peyre-Ferry

“Wizards” of all ages are invited to attend the first Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire on Saturday, July 28, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the event, the borough of Atglen will become an enchanted campus filled with magic and fun, with activities taking place along Main Street and Valley Avenue in Atglen. The Atglen Public Library (APL) has organized the event as a fundraiser for the library. Designed along the lines of popular movies and books that feature young wizards in training, the day’s events and activities are so unusual and varied that organizers hope they will interest diehard fans as well as those with a casual interest in the theme. The idea for the event came from a discussion between APL director Robbyn Kehoe and library trustee Erin Metzler. They share an interest in the Harry

Potter books and movies and thought that a wizardly themed event would be a good fundraiser for the library as well as a great activity for Atglen. The hope is that this new event will bring a lively spirit to the community. “It just evolved, and people got excited about it,” Metzler said. She noted that the fair will serve two purposes. “First and foremost, it is a fundraising event for the library to help finance our relocation to the center of town. In our bigger, more welcoming location, we hope to be somewhat of a community center, offering expanded programs and resources as well as study and meeting spaces,” Metzler stated. “Equally important, however, is that the festival will be a community and family-oriented event. The library will not be charging admission to the fair and will have several free activities for children.”

The first Di-Atglen Alley Wizard Faire will be held on July 28 in Atglen. Event organziers, shown with Quizzo the dragon, include (from left) Robbyn Kehoe, director of the Atglen Public Library (APL); Erin Metzler, APL trustee; and Carl Popadick, master of ceremonies for the stage programs.

A family favorite is coming to the stage locally, as ACT Players will present the popular musical “Beauty and the Beast.” Performances will take place at the Ware Theater on the Lincoln University campus, 1570 Baltimore Pike, Lincoln University. Tickets are now on sale for the production, which will run on Thursdays through Saturdays, July 19 to 21 and 26 to 28, at 7 p.m. There will also be two matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Sundays, July 22 and 29. The presentation follows the full Broadway production, which differs See ACT Players pg 2

At 89 years of age, Albert Gans is not just a member of the Oxford Area Senior Center (OASC); he is a longtime teacher there, leading art classes every Wednesday from 8 to 11:15 a.m. “I’ve been doing this at least 20 years at the Oxford Senior Center, maybe longer,” Gans said. Gans was an electronic engineer until he retired at the age of 65 and had time to turn his attention to fine art. He credits his pursuit of teaching art to the late Amy Beeman, whom he met through the Octorara Art Association, where she

Erin Murphy (right) will portray Belle and Bill Hanrahan will play her father, Maurice, during the upcoming performances of “Beauty and the Beast” by the ACT Players.

It’s a fairy tale, there’s no question about it,” ACT board president Karen Weaver said. “It’s a wonderful evening to enjoy in a safe, fun environment.” Elaborate costuming fits the show, with the purpose of catching the interest of the audience, while the well-known music and timeless story are dear to adults as well as children. “We have an extraordinary costumer who has costumed for us for years,” Weaver said. She noted that some of the outfits for this production are very unusual, such as those of the clock and the teapot. Weaver is co-directing with Mala Marcano, while Lisa Patrick is music director. The cast includes ACT veterans and newcomers. “The role of the Beast was double-cast due to the demands of the character,” Weaver reported. “Bobby Hamilton is portraying him for four shows, and Joseph Ethan Knettler (center) will portray Gaston in ACT Players’ upcoming production of “Beauty and the Beast. He is shown Brown for the other four.” Staring in the role of Belle is Erin Murphy. with the Silly Girls, played by (from left) Liz Rauscher, “I love Disney. I love ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ Kaylee Hanrahan, Gabrielle Salerni and Maddie Hamilton. but also I was looking for theater opportunities in the area,” she said. Murphy is a recent college graduate with a degree in musical theater. “Any chance to do musical theater is good by me,” she said. Murphy worked with ACT several years ago when she was a high school student in a production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” “This is the first time I’ve ever played the lead for them, so it’s exciting,” she said. “I love the family-oriented vibe of it. I also love that it is loved by so many people. It’s really fun to get to play a character that is known by so many people but do it my way and put my spin on it. “Also, Belle is a super strong female character,” she added. “It’s nice to have something like that.” Playing Gaston is Ethan Knettler. “I have always loved ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ It’s one of my favorite Disney shows. I have been in it once before, and I really wanted to go for the role of Gaston,” he said. “He’s the big guy, and I’m 6 foot 9 inches and 240 pounds-plus. He’s got a big old deep voice like me. The music fits me very well.” Knettler has a strong performing background, but this is his first time with ACT. “I love doing community theater shows. It’s a way to meet new friends, to get involved in the community, and do something fun,” he said. “It gives me a break from the day-today grind. It’s something that’s not the same old thing.”

“We’re partnering to get cats adopted,” Pet Pantry of Lancaster County executive director Melody Sanders said of her organization’s collaboration with Furever Home Adoption Center. “We put the animals first, and we try to figure out the rest afterward.” Until recently, that partnership has primarily involved working to ensure that rescued or surrendered cats receive the medical care and safe homes they need. Furever Home operates a feline sanctuary and adoption center at 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, while the Pet Pantry, headquartered at 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, cares for cats and other animals, offers low-cost vaccinations and spay/neuter services, and supplies pet food for households experiencing financial distress. The Pet Pantry’s veterinarians have been able to treat illnesses and injuries in cats taken in by Furever Home, and Furever Home has cared for felines accepted by the Pet Pantry that do better in a cage-free environment where they can socialize with other animals. The two organizations also share volunteers. Now, the Pet Pantry has signed on to help with hosting Furever Home’s fourth annual summer shopping fair. “This is a way for us to support (Furever Home),” Sanders said. “This shows our staff members and volunteers working together. The community needs to see organizations working together to better the lives of animals in Lancaster County.” The shopping fair will be held at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event will be open to the public free of charge, and well-contained pets will be

welcome. The Pet Pantry’s canine ambassador, Sasha, is slated to be on hand to meet with shoppers. More than 100 vendors, crafters, and local businesses have registered to participate in the event, which Furever Home fundraising chair Tina Krueger has carefully coordinated. “I want the consumer to have a wonderful shopping experience,” Krueger said. The first 100 adults to visit the shopping fair will receive goodie bags. There will be opportunities to win prizes and to participate in a vendor passport game. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Krueger noted that with the Pet Pantry’s assistance this year, there are Pictured on front: Furever enough volunteers to run concessions rather Home Adoption Center than outsourcing to a food truck. fundraising chair Tina A food drive to benefit both organizations will be held during the shopping fair. Folks may receive an entry into a prize drawing for each cat item they donate. The wish list includes canned kitten food, wet or dry cat food, kitten meal replacement liquid, powdered kitten formula, paper towels, and bleach. The need for supplies is great. Between the two organizations, more than 500 cats have found forever families in the past year. Currently, the Pet Pantry has more than 50 cats in foster homes and 20 felines in its adoption room. Still more are sheltered by Furever Home. Additionally, the Pet Pantry provides an average of 6,000 pounds of cat and dog food to households in need each month. Distributions are held in Gap, Collegeville, and Lancaster, as well as at Water Street Mission. “We’re trying to touch as many people as possible,” Sanders said, explaining the Pet Pantry’s geographic reach.

Both the Pet Pantry and Furever Home exist through public support and private fundraising like the summer shopping fair. Volunteers are integral to the organizations’ operation. Krueger noted that Furever Home can use folks to clean the adoption center or to attend networking events to provide education about the organization. For the 24th consecutive summer, free walking tours are being offered throughout Chester County as part of the Town Tours and Village Walks program. The tours began in West Chester on June 14 and will continue to run on Thursday evenings through Aug. 30. Tours usually last 50 minutes and begin at 5:30 p.m. The last tour is generally held at 7 p.m. All tours are free of charge and include light refreshments. The tours are sponsored by Chester County’s Board of Commissioners through the Chester County Planning Commission, the Chester County Historical Society, Westtown Township, the Chester County Historic Preservation Network and the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau. The scheduled tour on July 26 will feature the Mill at Anselma. The mill, located at 1730 Conestoga Road (Route 401), Chester Springs, is a Colonial-era custom

grist mill that served its local agricultural community for around 250 years. The site features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005 and is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. The mill was constructed in 1747 by Samuel Lightfoot. It changed ownership through the years, and its last owner through 1982, Oliver Collins, ran a grist mill, a saw mill, a cider press, a metal working shop, a barbershop and a lawnmower repair shop at the location, all powered by the same water wheel. The family also operated the Anselma Post Office. At one time, the Reading Railroad ran through the property on its way to Philadelphia. “The railroad was put in in 1871,” said Dave Rollenhagen, who is the

The Chester County commissioners recently presented a check for $7,500 to representatives from the Chester County-based Volunteer English Program (VEP). The funds are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits. VEP will use the monies to help fund its volunteer tutor training program, which supports English language and cultural instruction for new and long-term residents. The check was presented by Commissioners Michelle Kichline and Terence Farrell at a recent commissioners’ sunshine public meeting. On behalf of VEP, board member and tutor Fred Crotchfelt thanked the commissioners for the funds, noting that 300 volunteer tutors and approximately 300 immigrant students are currently registered with VEP. For more than 32 years, VEP has provided free, one-to-one

Those who enter the fair will come past a dragon’s watchful presence to find all kinds of entertainment. “ We have a spectacular festival entrance planned, which will beckon attendees to Di-Atglen Alley,” said Metzler. “We’ll have a stage with programs running for most of the day.” Performers will include magician Professor Snark, Irish dancers and an environmental educator with live owls. An unusual feature will be an escape room, where groups must solve puzzling obstacles in the allotted time. “I only have nine slots for groups to go through, so that one might fill up pretty quickly,” Metzler said. “People can sign up for a slot when they get there.” Those who think they know their wizards can play “Wizard Quizzo.” Visitors may also learn about magical plants

from the “professor” from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Of special interest to youngsters will be the “Potion Master” doing demonstrations and helping children make slime or silly putty. Other free activities for children will include face painting and make-and-take crafts. Shopping opportunities will abound, plus there will be food vendors and a beverage area. “We have a magical m a r k e t fo r p e o p l e t o b u y wands and other hand-crafted items,” Metzler said. was president for several years. “We got to be really good friends. She was teaching at about six senior centers at the time. She got busy doing a mural and asked if I would help her. She gave me four senior centers to (teach art lessons) at the time - Coatesville, Oxford, Downingtown and Kennett Square,” Gans explained. “When she finished the mural, she said, ‘Why don’t you just stay?’ so I kept the job. “I give her credit,” he continued. “Through her friendship and efforts, I became a full-time artist teaching at the senior centers and opening an art studio.” Gans studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and had his own studio in a barn on his property, where he gave lessons. Currently, Gans focuses on teaching at the OASC, but he keeps busy with his own work as well and had a display at the Oxford Arts Alliance Annex earlier this year. His work as an artist covers a full spectrum of subjects and materials. “I prefer certain mediums for the subject I’m doing. I like oil for portraits, I like watercolor for painting outside landscapes, I like acrylic for abstracts because it dries so fast,” he explained, adding that he has also done sculpture, wood carving and mosaics. Teaching, however, is one of his primary interests. “I love it. We not only have an art class, (but) we have a social club,” Gans said. “These people here are such good friends. It’s a wonderful thing to have friends.”

Gans’ students are just as enthusiastic. “I can’t say enough good things about him,” said Nancy Devine as she worked on a watercolor. “I just always liked art. I was always interested, but I never had anyone teach me like Al has. When you come here, you not only get a teacher; you get a friend.” “We love Al; he helps us all,” Evelyn Munson agreed. “He’s kind and he’s helpful. I never painted a thing until I retired at 65.” Diane Rickards has been taking classes at the OASC for more than seven years. “If it wasn’t for Al, I would have come one or two weeks and quit,” she said. “He’s wonderful. He has patience, and he helps all of us. He’s just the best artist. We feel very relaxed; there’s no pressure.” Art classes at the OASC cost a nominal fee per session. The class is open to area residents age 60 and over. Art classes are just one of many offerings at the center, located at 12 E. Locust St., Oxford. Other regular activities include crafts such as making greeting cards, tech classes, stretching, Zumba and more. For more information, readers may contact the center at 610-932-5244 or oxsrctr@zoominternet.net or visit www.oxfordseniors.org.

Oral Hygiene Tips For Pets It is not just what a pet puts inside its mouth that can make a difference in comfort and health, but the way pet owners take care of pets’ teeth, gums, and more. Oral hygiene, this oft-overlooked component of pet care can mean the difference between a happy, healthy pet and one that may be suffering in silence. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) says brushing an animal’s teeth is the single most effective means to maintain oral health between professional vet examinations. Bacteria that forms naturally in an animal’s mouth will contribute to the formation of plaque which, left untreated, can lead to periodontal disease. By brushing away the precursors to plaque, pet owners can achieve optimal dental health for their pets. Oral hygiene does not begin and end with regular brushing. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) also suggests pet lovers work with a veterinary dentist to evaluate the health of teeth, the jaws, and the roots below the gum line. These professionals are invested in all aspects of oral health care and can be called on for routine cleaning, filing, extraction, or tooth repairs, if need be. The AVMA says that periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats, and by

the time the animal reaches three years of age, it may have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which can only worsen if preventative measures are not taken. Pet dental problems are similar to those that occur in people. While dental caries (cavities) are less likely, abscesses, infections, broken teeth, and palate defects can occur. Signs of potential oral problems include bad breath, abnormal chewing, disinterest in eating, swelling in the gums, tenderness when the mouth is touched, or bleeding. Pets may become irritable if their mouths are bothering them, so if behavior changes are observed, dogs or cats should be seen by a veterinarian to find out if a dental issue is at the root of the problem. Some pet owners are reticent to handle oral health care for their companion animals because they fear the pet may bite if uncomfortable. Although this is always a possibility, dogs and cats can grow accustomed to teeth being brushed or wiped with patience, says AVDC. Oral rinses and special chews also can reduce plaque formation. Dental health is an important component of responsible pet ownership. Home oral hygiene and professional cleanings and examinations can help pets remain healthy.

Money-Saving Travel Tips For Retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling. Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel. That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world. Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement. Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings. Travel agencies should not be overlooked. While many

prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips. Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies. Travel agencies have access to the latest information, and many specialize in certain countries, knowing all the attractions visitors want to see. Travel agencies may offer packages that include admissions to popular attractions, which can be more affordable than planning a trip a la carte. Traveling as part of a group is also an option. Group travel may not appeal to everyone, but it should appeal to older, budgetconscious travelers. Retirees who are uncomfortable driving at home will likely be even less comfortable driving in foreign countries where the rules of the road are not the same. Traveling in groups, whether it is with a retirement community, religious organization, or another program, can save travelers substantial amounts of money. Many hotels and tourist attractions offer steep discounts for group tours, which can even be arranged through travel agencies. A hidden benefit of signing up for a group tour is the chance to meet new people and develop new relationships with fellow globetrotters.
