Coatesville VA Opens Food Pantry For Veterans eterans in need of nonperishable food items, including canned soups, tuna and vegetables, along with pasta, cereal and oatmeal, are invited to visit the newly opened Lincoln’s Promise Food Pantry that recently opened at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The pantry’s name is derived from the VA mission statement by President Abraham Lincoln, which reads, “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.” The pantry, which is a collaboration between the Coatesville VA and the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), is located in building 57 on the basement level at the VA, 1400 Black Horse Hill Road, Coatesville. It is open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and on Thursdays from noon until 3 p.m. The pantry is also open by private appointment. “(The pantry) was an office that was repurposed. It was vacated, and
V
the timing worked out perfectly,” said Meredith Kenny, the VA’s assistant chief of nutrition and food services. “ With the help of the Chester County Food Bank, we were able to (install) shelving.” Kenny reported that the number of visitors has grown since the pantry officially opened in March. “In June, we served 39 households,” she said, noting that the pantry now has 42 registered participants. When visiting the pantry for the first time, veterans are asked to register and provide basic information about the size of their households. No proof of income is required. Veterans can visit the pantry whether they need it for one-time use or they need longer-term support. The amount of food allowed is based on the number of people living in the veteran’s household. Lincoln’s Promise is primarily a choice pantry, meaning veterans can select the items they prefer to eat. In addition, toiletries like soap and shampoo are given to the veterans when available, as well as cleaning supplies and supplementary items like flower, sugar and cooking oil.

“Every day will be a new adventure. We just decided we are doing it while we still can, loading up our Honda Pilot and seeing where the roads lead us,” said longtime Parkesburg resident Nancy Gauthier when announcing her plans to sell the family home and leave the area along with her husband, Dave. “This journey is going to be a huge transition for both of us, as well as our children, grandchildren, family and dear friends. McKenna nicknamed the couple’s SUV “Roamin’.” “We drove almost 16,000 miles,” Nancy said. “We don’t have a camper or trailer; we have an SUV. Every day was a new adventure, and we sought out all different things all over the country and posted every day for family and friends.” After the successful trip, Nancy and Dave decided to make road tripping a permanent part of their lives. “We realized we wanted to (visit) the rest of country - the inside states and New England,” Nancy stated. “We had someone approach us about buying our house. We are putting everything we have into a storage unit and will take off and go. Our kids were very supportive, and we thought we should do it now while we still can.” The Gauthiers plan to return to the area for important family events and around the holidays, during which time they can stay with family or friends. “I have been blessed with having a huge amount of friends in this town and in this area. They have become family,” said Nancy. “Not only do I have friends in the local Lions Club but clubs across the United States.” “It will be hard (to leave) because I was very active in Lions,” she added. “It’s hard for me to walk away, but it’s the right time.”
The Chester County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) announced a collaboration with the Chester County Library System to post the National Human Trafficking Hotline number and related details in bathroom stalls of libraries across Chester County. The information has been displayed since the beginning of July, the month that includes World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Saturday, July 30. Although Pennsylvania Act 197 (2012) - the hotline posting law -
requires that the National Human Trafficking Hotline number be posted in transportation stations, rest areas, truck stops, and certain bars and hotels, publicizing the information is voluntary for other establishments. The hotline is run by Polaris and connects with law enforcement agencies in all areas of the United States. Call the hotline at 888-373-7888 or text 233733 (BeFree) to report tips for suspected cases, ask questions, and request resources. Calls can be anonymous or confidential.

Nancy is a past Lions district governor and chair of the Pennsylvania Lions Adopt a Soldier Project, which provides boxes filled with gifts and personal care items to military personnel overseas. Taking over the project this year will be Nancy and Dave’s daughter, Danielle Salada, who is also a Lions Club member. In addition to Danielle, who is married to Kevin Salada, the Gauthiers have a son, David Gauthier Jr., who is married to Beth. They also have four grandchildren. “We moved here (from New York) when the kids were 10,” Nancy said. “We moved in on Memorial Day weekend of 1989. There were very (few) houses in the development. It was a huge move, but it gave our kids and us a lot of opportunities. It was the right thing to do.” Dave was a first responder for the Pennsylvania Turnpike until he retired last January. Nancy was a practice manager for Brandywine Valley Infectious Disease Associates until she retired in December 2016. “We always talked about traveling. We love traveling,” said Nancy. We don’t just hand them food they may not like and send them home.” In addition, there is an educational component of the pantry. “Everyone who works in the pantry is a registered dietitian. We teach them how to (enhance) their food like putting couscous in meat or adding fruit to oatmeal to make it more of an entree than (just breakfast),” Kenny said. “Another thing we (suggest) is adding

The Chester County Agricultural Land Preservation Board is accepting applications for two competitive programs funded by the Chester County commissioners: the Commonwealth/County Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program. To date, more than 560 farms totaling more than 43,000 acres have been preserved in Chester County through these two programs. Both the Commonwealth/ County Program and the Chester County Challenge Grant Program offer funds to qualifying Chester County farm owners who are interested in preserving their farm. The County pays farm owners for their development rights in exchange for a permanent agricultural conservation easement on their land. The owner
still owns the land and can sell it or pass it on to the next generation if it remains in agriculture. Farms with 10 acres or more of tillable land are eligible for both programs if they are adjacent to other permanently preserved land. For farms not adjacent to permanently preserved land, the acreage minimums are 35 acres for the Commonwealth/County Program and 25 acres for the Challenge Grant Program. The application deadline for both programs is Friday, Aug. 5. For more information, including applications and program guidelines, visit www.chesco.org/ 4618/Farmland-Preservation or contact Geoff Shellington, Chester County agricultural programs coordinator, at 610-3446504 or gshellington@chesco.org.
