Jay Smoker, owner of Pine View Farm Freshly picked corn on the cob will be available at local farm marMarket in Atglen kets throughout the summer.
Experts Share Kernels Of Knowledge About Corn BY FRANCINE FULTON
sweet summertime tradition is enjoying a freshly picked ear of corn. Local corn experts Jay Smoker, owner of Pine View Farm Market in Atglen, and Roberta Cosentino, manager of healthy food access programs at the Chester County Food Bank (CCFB), recently shared information about harvesting and preparing corn on the cob. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Is it true that each corn “hair” represents one kernel of corn? Cosentino: Corn hair or “silk” has the potential to be a kernel of corn if it’s pollinated. Community Courier: Which corn is the best/sweetest - white, yellow or the bicolor? Smoker: We have white and bicolor. They are both sweet, but the white is the most popular seller. Cosentino: I (recently) witnessed two Army veterans have the most hilarious argument about this. As with most varieties of produce, it’s about personal preference, memories and where and when it was picked.
Additional tips provided by Pete’s Produce Farm in West Chester include the following. When selecting corn to buy, go with larger ears with fully mature kernels. If not preparing the corn right away, keep the ear in its husk and keep it in the refrigerator. Corn can be frozen for future use by cooking ears for one to two minutes in boiling water, cutting the kernels off each cob and then placing the kernels into freezer bags while removing as much air as possible from the bags. Petes’s Produce Farm grows produce, including corn, for the CCFB. Volunteers harvest the produce and donate it to the food bank for distribution to clients in need. Owner Pete Flynn is an active and long-standing member of the CCFB and one of the original founders of the CCFB Gleaning Program. For more information about the CCFB and the Gleaning Program, visit www.chestercountyfoodbank.org. More information about Pine View Farm Market, 334 Lantz Road, Atglen, is available at www.face book.com/pineviewfarmmarket.

Community Courier: Should cooks bring the water to a boil and then add the corn or put the corn in the water and then bring it to a boil? Smoker: Drop the corn into boiling water for seven to 10 minutes. You can butter and salt it to taste when it comes out. Cosentino: The bigger the kernels and/or the older the corn, the longer you should cook it. I generally find if it sticks to your teeth, it’s probably overcooked! Community Courier: Can you grill corn on the cob? If so, should you keep the shell on? C o s e n t i n o : This is my favorite method for cooking corn. I peel the outer leaves, but keep the inner leaves on, and grill the corn until the husk has charred. Hopefully, some of the kernels char as well. In a pinch, I’ll also do this under the broiler. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : How long will fresh corn be available this summer? Smoker: From now until the end of August, we will have corn galore. We will be picking (corn) up to the middle of September, approximately Sept. 15.
Raised in Altoona, Ruth spent most of her life living in Kennett Square with her late husband, Jack Anderson. The couple had two children, Marcia and Tommy. Ruth later married Joe Codichini, who is also deceased. Ruth now lives with Marcia and her son-in-law, Bernie Dickerson. “The event really turned out great,” said Celeste, noting there were approximately 40 cars in the the parade. “We even had the West Fallowfield Police in a police car and the Cochranville Fire Company in a fire truck join the parade.” Also attending the event were congregation members from Willowdale Chapel in Kennett Square. Ruth joined Willowdale Chapel in the late 1940s and ministered to countless women and families for more than 60 years.

Church Volunteers Take Part In Serve Day According to www.serveday.com, the day provides churches across the world with opportunities to serve their local communities and share the love of God through practical acts of kindness. It is based on Mark 10:45, which reads, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Volunteer Larry Fuller affirmed, “We want to serve the Lord and serve the community.” Freedom Life currently has two locations, the main campus in Christiana and another campus in Centre County. Volunteers from both campuses took part in the projects. In Chester County, volunteers partnered with Good Works to assist with an ongoing construction project in Coatesville. Lancaster County volunteers took part in a cleanup at Muddy Run Park, where they cleared trails by cutting branches, moving rocks and pulling weeds and picked up trash on the site’s disc golf course and campground. Centre County campus volunteers worked in Unionville Park painting the gazebo and pavilion and pulling weeds.

“We want to take our faith out beyond the walls of the church,” said Sally Englerth, one of the volunteers from Freedom Life Church who participated in a day of community service locally as part of the nationwide observance of Serve Day on July 10.
Main campus volunteers worked at Octorara JuniorSenior High School in Atglen, where they cleaned up the school’s greenhouse. Volunteers also reorganized a storage space in the school. “We did weeding around the greenhouse, and (other volunteers) painted the dugout,” said Fuller, explain-
ing that the school provided the church with a list of jobs that needed to be completed. The greenhouse at the school, which is maintained by the Octorara FFA, includes raised bed gardens where various vegetables and fruits are grown and donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. This year’s Faire will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “She is an escape room fan and a Harry Potter fan,” said Kehoe. “She is in charge of the escape room at the Wizard Faire, which always sells out. So, we decided to have (the scavenger hunt) to allow more people to experience that fun.” Kehoe added that families concerned about social distancing can feel safe at the upcoming scavenger hunt. “The clues are spread out so that families will not have to run into other people,” she said. There will be separate entrance fees for people age 12 and up and for children ages 6 to 11. Children under age 6 will be admitted for free. Children under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult. It is recommended that participants register in advance so that enough water and snacks will be available. Payment can be made on the day of the event. They will be asked to find 13 magical objects, solve the clues and fill in a fact sheet about Harry Potter, “The Boy Who Lived.” “July 31 is Harry Potter’s birthday and J.K. Rowling’s birthday,” noted Robbyn Kehoe, APL library director. The registration table for the scavenger hunt will be set up in front of the library’s future location. Fees collected for the program will be used to purchase furnishings for the building. “ We’re calling it a scavenger hunt, but it’s more like a progressive escape room,” said Kehoe. “You know you’re at the right location, but you may not see (the object) right away. When you see (the object), it will have a clue to solve. There may be several answers, but when you look at the fact sheet you will know the right answer. It’s a multi-step thing.” The scavenger hunt is a self-paced program; attendees may check in at any time. The hunt should take 60 to 90 minutes to complete. At the end of the hunt, participants can return to Quest Headquarters for light refreshments in celebration of Harry’s birthday. “Some of the clues might take some time to work out. Randy Litwin of Parkesburg is color blind, which causes difficulties with everyday tasks like coordinating clothing, judging the color of a traffic light, playing board games and even cooking. Litwin, 41, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, along with other volunteers, recently got to experience seeing colors for the first time thanks to special glasses developed by EnChroma, a company based out of Berke-
ley, Calif., that produces eyewear for color blindness and low vision. Eight pairs of the glasses are now available to borrow through Berks County Public Libraries (BCPL). The glasses were unveiled during a ceremony held at the Village Library of Morgantown on June 26. In addition to Litwin, other volunteers who took part in the reveal event were Shawn Fies, 39, of Fleetwood, an elementary music teacher; Daren Ernfield, 41, of Richland, a probation officer; Tyler Steele,

National Night Out To Be Observed In Christiana The Christiana Police Department will take part in the nationwide National Night Out program on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities will take place in front of the borough hall, 10 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Accoring to www.natw.org, National Night Out started in 1984, when residents were asked to turn on their porch lights and to keep a vigil on the front porch to promote crime prevention and community unity. Today, the event, which is held on the first Tuesday in August, is
designed to build relationships between neighbors and law enforcement and promote a sense of community. In Christiana, there will be a police officer on hand to talk to youngsters and hand out coloring books. The Chester County Sheriff’s Department and its K-9 Unit is also scheduled to attend. The Christiana Fire Company will present activities, and a representative from Amtrak will discuss train track safety. Those who visit the event will be entered into a random drawing to win Lancaster
Barnstormers tickets and ice cream cones at Dutch-Way Farm Market. Refreshments will include freshly made popcorn and freeze pops. For more information, search for “Christiana Borough” on Facebook. MaryAnne Schneider, borough administrative assistant, announced that a new feature of the Facebook page is the posting of old photos depicting early Christiana history. Photos are posted every Thursday. Local residents are invited to share their photos as well.

15, a student in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District; and Stephen Macready of Boyertown, 33, an audio/visual technician. Amy Resh, BCPL administrator, was the host of the program, which was attended by Berks County Commissioners Christian Leinbach, Kevin Barnhardt and Michael Rivera. Leinbach said he was surprised to learn statistics about color blindness. “One in 12 males are color blind. One in 200 females are color blind,” he said. “I did not know the disparity was that great.” After a count of three, the men donned the glasses and immediately began looking at the scenery around them. “When I put them on, immediately some red and greens had a bright, vivid and drastic change. I started looking to familiar objects, my car, the balloons and plants to see the difference,” said Litwin. “As I wore the glasses longer, more color changes began to stand out.” “Now I have to go back and learn colors, but it’s a great opportunity, and I am
Hunters statewide may apply for antlerless deer licenses by mail, effective July 12. Changes have been made to the 2021 licensing year, including an increase in the fee for the antlerless license for both residents and nonresidents and an increase in the personal license limits. All hunting license holders, excluding mentored permits, may now apply for and obtain up to six antlerless deer licenses before the start of
hunting season for any Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) in which licenses remain available. Hunters may not apply for all six licenses at once during the open round. Hunters may submit one application each in the opening round, the unsold first round and the unsold second round. Multiple applications may be submitted at once when over-thecounter sales begin on Monday, Sept. 13, for WMUs
where licenses remain. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has set the antlerless deer license allocations at 70,000 for WMU 5C and 29,000 for WMC 5D which covers Chester County. For more information and a copy of the application, visit www.chesco.org/treasurer or contact the Chester County Treasurer’s Office at 610-3446370 or treasurerdept@ chesco.org. thankful for it,” Litwin added. “Colors come up every day, so it’s an opportunity to communicate with people in language you have never been able to speak.” Before leaving the ceremony, Litwin remarked that his car was not quite the color he thought it was. “For me, I had an idea of what red is, and it’s not (what I thought). Red without the glasses is dark and muted. Now it pops,” he said, adding with a smile, “Now I don’t know if I would have bought that (car).” All eight pairs of color blind glasses are designed for outdoor use. BCPL will add indoor glasses to its collection by the end of the year. All glasses will be housed at the library system headquarters in Leesport and will travel to any of the 23 member library locations when requested. Library cardholders interested in borrowing colorblind glasses should place a hold through the countywide catalog or speak with a library staff member for assistance. Parkesburg POINT Receives Donation Local farmer Charlie Kauffman recently directed a $2,500 America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to The Parkesburg POINT youth center. The POINT will use the funds to provide programs for students in the western Chester County area this summer. The Pennsylvania Railroad Museum recently purchased the three existing books from J. Arthur Moore’s four-book collection related to his fictional Virginia and Truckee Railroad of West Virginia. This railroad shares a name with a real railroad in Nevada. Moore began writing the four books 40 years ago. When “Summer of Two Worlds” was finished, it was released in manuscript form; in 2015, it was first published, and it was recently republished in its third edition. “Summer at Stewart Creek” was recently revised and then released on Dec. 1, 2020, and “Twelfth Winter,” was released on June 1. The remaining book, “Stranded in Snow Shoe,” is due out in early 2022; this book, “Summer of Two Worlds” and “Twelfth Winter” make up the “Summer of Two Worlds” trilogy. “Summer of Two Worlds” has also been released alongside two

other titles by Moore: “Journey Into Darkness,” a story in four parts, and “Blake’s Story: Revenge and Forgiveness.” At the time, these three books were released as Civil War and Native American historical fiction for middle grade through adult readers. “Summer at Stewart Creek” includes photo illustrations of an HOscale model railroad that the author created when envisioning the book’s setting. The cover photos for this book feature the Tahoo, a locomotive in the collection at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum. The Tahoo was used on the real-life Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Nevada. All Moore’s titles are available at the Landis Valley Farm Museum, Cricket’s Antiques and Garden Market on Route 322 in Glenmoore, and online at www.jarthurmoore.com, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon. Books can also be ordered through independent book stores.

Internship Program Receives Funds
Students with the Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County’s Teens Turning Green internship program carry out projects that involve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
NBC10, Telemundo62 and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation announced that the Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County will receive $15,000 in Project Innovation 2021 grant funding. Funding will be used for the Teens Turning Green STEM Paid High School Summer Internships, enabling the program to hire more interns and add a new location, which will significantly increase access to the TTG program. Project Innovation 2021 grants were presented to eligible nonprofits in 11 markets across the U.S., all of which include stations owned by Project Innovation’s sponsors. Ten Philadelphia area organizations received a total of $315,000.
These 10 organizations offer programs that are addressing local community issues through innovative solutions in the areas of community engagement, culture of inclusion, next generation storytelling and youth education and empowerment. This is the fourth consecutive year that NBC10, Telemundo62 and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation have recognized local nonprofits with Project Innovation grants. The grant application period opened on Jan. 8 and closed on Feb. 12. The stations created and gathered community panels to review grant applications and select final grant recipients. This year, the program funding levels increased in each participating market to $315,000, up
from $225,000, and to $3.475 million across the 11 markets, up from $2.475 million. For a list of all winners, visit https://tinyurl.com/project innovation2021. Information is also available on social media by searching for @NBCUFoundation and #ProjectInnovation. The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County in Avondale is a nationally accredited land conservancy whose mission is to ensure the perpetual preservation and stewardship of open space, natural resources, historic sites, and working agricultural lands throughout southern Chester County. For more information, visit www.tlcforscc.org.

The first-time event, which took place in the parking lot of Atglen Borough Hall, was held in keeping with the theme of the library’s Summer Reading Program, “Tails and Tales.” Wesley was at the Tails and Tales Pet Fair with his owner, Amy Celona, who explained that Wesley visits the APL as part of
the PAWS for Reading program. “Reading to a dog (provides) a non-judgmental audience,” Celona said, noting that Wesley was available for Zoom reading sessions with children when the library was shut because of COVID-19. Wesley also visits children every other week at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. “He’ll get up on the bed with a (sick) child and just lay down,” Celona noted. Young APL patron Piper Pine was on hand to present a jar full of dog bones to Wesley. As part of a library contest, children were asked to guess how many treats were in a jar. When Piper won the contest, she decided to donate them. Dr. Jen Morris from Pine Creek Animal Hospital, along with her husband, Christopher, brought their Great Danes, Cyrus, Brisket and Turducken, to the Pet Fair. Visitors were invited to pet the dogs, including the largest of the group, Cyrus, who weighs 200 pounds. Jen reported that Cyrus eats 12 cups of food a day and sleeps in an orthopedic dog bed. The other dogs sleep in toddler beds. Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue brought several kittens and puppies, which are available for adoption, to the Pet Fair. Lucky Dawg is no-kill, foster-based, allvolunteer animal rescue that is dedicated to rescuing homeless,
abused or unwanted animals. To view a list of available cats and dogs and to complete an adoption application, visit www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com. April Kenworthy-Brade from Parkesburg Area TNR was available to talk about the organization, which is composed of volunteers committed to getting the stray cat population under control by utilizing the TNR method. According to a 2020 survey conducted by Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, the Fourth of July is the No. 1 holiday for backyard grilling in the U.S. Sixty-eight percent of grill owners surveyed said they host a barbecue on that day. The poll also revealed that carnivores rule when it comes to grilling. Eightyeight percent of those who participated in the survey said they prefer meat, specifically steak, followed by hamburgers, then hot dogs. However, a respectable 50% of respondents said that they liked to grill vegetables. There are strong opinions when it comes to the preferred method of grilling. Whether it’s due to convenience or preference, 61% of grill owners use a gas grill. Some of those gas grillers also use charcoal, as the poll shows, with 49% of grillers using this method. Just 10% use an electric grill. The popularity of smoker grills has increased over the last several years. Much like die-hard charcoal users, smoker grills seem to attract a very loyal customer base. One of my favorite foods to prepare on the grill is corn on the cob - especially street corn. If you go to a fair or farmers market this summer and there’s a vendor selling street corn, my advice it to run don’t walk - and buy it. You’ll find a recipe that I like to use below. Will you be among the millions of Americans celebrating our independence with a backyard barbecue? We may not see eye-to-eye on the method or type of food we serve, but I think we can all agree that Independence Day should be observed, and if we’re fortunate enough to have family and friends to celebrate with, we are blessed indeed.
Grilled Street Corn Source: Matthew Eads, Grillseeker Prep time: 10 minutes. Cook time: 30 minutes. Serves: 4-6 Ingredients • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 4 to 6 ears of corn, husks on • 2 cups grated Cotija cheese • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped • 1 lime, cut into wedges • Cayenne powder or your favorite barbecue rub Directions 1. Light your grill with coals on one side, and allow temperature to stabilize at 350 degrees. 2. While the grill is preheating, whisk together mayonnaise, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl. Place mixture in the refrigerator, allowing the flavors to meld together. 3. Once the grill has reached 350 degrees, place corn on the grill on opposite side of coals, leaving the husks on. The husks will steam the corn as it cooks and add to the presentation. Grill for 30 minutes. 4. When the corn is ready, remove from the grill and peel husks back. Be careful when doing so because the steam inside the husks is hot. 5. Coat corn thoroughly with a thin coat of the mayo mixture. 6. Pour Cotija cheese onto a plate, hold corn over plate and spoon cheese onto corn to coat the mayo mixture. 7. To finish, top with a pinch of cayenne pepper or barbecue rub. Garnish with cilantro and fresh lime juice as desired. * This can also be done on a gas grill, but the corn won’t have that distinct charcoal grill flavor.

Hot Weather Safety Information Offered Summer brings high temperatures and high humidity, increasing health risks when people work and play outside. Risks are especially great for older people and young children. Patient First has provided information on heat-related illnesses and their treatment and prevention. Excessive heat can cause several health problems, including heat exhaustion. Symptoms include profuse sweating; headache; dizziness; nausea; vomiting; rapid heartbeat; cool, moist, pale skin; and muscle cramps. If someone is experiencing symptoms of being heat exhausted, move the person to a cooler location, apply cool, wet cloths to their body, and give them cool water to drink. If the person vomits or refuses to drink, call 911. Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body loses its ability to control its own temperature. Symptoms may include very high body temperature; confusion and slurred speech; hot, dry skin or excessive sweating; seizures; and loss of consciousness. It is important to take action if a heat stroke occurs, as this condition can be fatal. Get the person out of the sun - preferably into an air-conditioned room - and call 911. Provide cool water for the person to drink, soak his or her clothing with water, and keep surrounding air circulating. Other early warning signs of heat-related illness may include cramps and a heat rash. If someone is showing signs of a heat-related illness, he or she should seek medical attention immediately. Several steps may be taken to help people avoid heatrelated illnesses. People should wear light-weight, light-colored clothing made of breathable material, like cotton. They should stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. They should avoid strenuous outdoor activity on hot days, and if they must be outside, they should take frequent breaks in a cool place. Air-conditioning is the best way to protect against heatrelated illness. During extreme heat, anyone who does not have air-conditioning at their home may try to spend time in air-conditioned locations, such as a shopping mall, public library, or public health-sponsored heat-relief shelter in their area.
