Congregation Members Keeping Busy By Francine Fulton
Trying out a new recipe, cleaning out drawers and closets, taking up an old hobby and trying their hands at arts and crafts are just some of the activities that congregation members at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, spent time on during the stay-at-home order. Among those who took the time for a cleanout project was the Rev. Dr. Nina George-Hacker, rector of St. John’s. “My husband (Rick) and I moved into our apartment four years ago and were so busy working we never had time to deal with our basement storage unit, which was a mess,” she said. “One day, during our enforced stay-at-home, we spent 10 hours cleaning out and reorganizing the space. Now we know what is and isn’t in there and where to find it.”
Frances Gilfillan, a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, and a resident of the Tel Hai Retirement Community, created 25 pillows from her late husband’s clothing to distribute to his family members.
In addition to the basement, GeorgeHacker also cleaned out and reorganized her desk drawers and dresser drawers, the home’s hall closet and linen closet, three floor-to-ceiling shelves of CDs, two four-drawer file cabinets and one kitchen cabinet. “When I wasn’t cleaning out and reorganizing spaces, I did a lot more cooking - trying out new recipes and reviving old favorites,” she reported, noting that one of her most successful meals consisted of panko-encrusted fish with asparagus, zucchini with cheese and quinoa and vegetables. As a tribute to her late husband, Richard Gilfillan, lifelong congregation
member Frances Gilfillan, who resides in the Tel Hai Retirement Community in Honey Brook, created 25 pillows from her late husband’s shirts, pants and jeans. See St. John’s Compass pg 2
Pat Owens, a former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Compass, painted ceramics during the stay-at-home order. Although she no longer resides in the area, she stays connected to St. John’s by watching services online.

Community Invited To Virtual Town Tours By Francine Fulton
Each summer, local residents and visitors to the area enjoy taking part in the Chester County Planning Commission’s Town Tours and Village Walks program, which provides guided tours of local points of interest in the county. For 2020, the program, now in its 26th year, has been transitioned to a completely virtual experience due to COVID-19. The new virtual summer series is designed to highlight Chester County’s cultural heritage, while keeping health and safety issues in mind. The virtual program began on July 16 with a talk on the art and architecture in Phoenixville. The remaining “Live at Five” programs will begin at 5 p.m. on Thursdays throughout July and August. like sunflower seeds and mealworms. The robins enjoy the bird baths.” To help with birdwatching, Baldwin has researched birding online and downloaded related apps, including BirdNET for identifying bird sounds and Merlin Bird ID. “Also the Facebook page ‘Birding Pennsylvania’ is very informative,” she added. Pat Owens, who started attending St. John’s in 1974 when her family moved to Coatesville, spent time painting ceramics during the pandemic. “I started taking ceramic classes - a new thing for me - at the senior center before it closed down. I have managed to get a lot of projects and paints,” she said. “I have little energy due to a medical problem and painting ceramics when I’m too tired to do anything else has kept me sane.” Owens, who recently moved out of the area, still remains connected to St. John’s. “I was a faithful and active member until I had to move to Georgia at the end of May to be near my son,” she stated. “I found an Episcopal church here and was just getting to feel at home and know a few people when everything shut down. Since March, I have been ‘attending’ church online through St. John’s YouTube (channel). I still feel part of St. John’s family.” St. John’s currently has no in-person services, but online services are offered. “My husband, our organist, and I have been recording brief, non-Communion weekly services for the congregation and posting these on YouTube and Facebook,” noted George-Hacker. To access the services, readers may visit www.facebook.com/stjohnscompass or www.youtube.com and search for “Saint John’s Church Compass.”
“He passed away in November 2019, and after deep thought I decided to make this my project,” she said. “Fortunately, I was getting started on this when the virus struck, and I was counseled at Tel Hai to stay at home unless absolutely necessary to go out. Making the pillows was extremely helpful in passing the time and actually very relaxing.” Gilfillan distributed the pillows to her husband’s family members, including his grandchildren. Robin Baldwin, also a lifelong member of St. John’s, spent time organizing photos and birdwatching. “My 92-yearold mother (Selena Baldwin) and I are enjoying feeding and watching the birds like never before,” she stated. “We’re learning about orioles, that catbirds like oranges and grape jelly and house finches

Masks and physical distancing are required. It is suggested that one person represent a family if possible. In-person programs are not available as this time. “Everyone seems to be really appreciative that we are open, but protecting their health,” Kehoe said. The Summer Reading Program for Atglen Public Library is virtual this year. Patrons should visit http://atglenpubliclibrary.readsquared.com to make an account and log their reading times and activities. All are welcome to participate, and there are different levels for prekindergartners, school-age children, teenagers and adults. Power patch activities are available, with real patches awarded at the end of the summer as well as prizes. Virtual programming online through Zoom will continue this summer. This includes Tales and Tunes with Radcliff Music Studio on Mondays at 10 a.m.; Paws for Reading, where children may read aloud to Wesley the therapy dog, on the fourth Monday of the month at 4 p.m.; and Adult Book Club on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. Other upcoming online activities include a Harry Potter book discussion and trivia event to be held on Wednesday, July 29, at 4 p.m. and a World Music Tour program on Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 2 p.m. To register for Zoom programs or for more information, readers may visit www.facebook.com/AtglenPublicLibrary or www.atglenpubliclibrary.org. The library is continuing its Friday morning story time online, and the Summer Reading Program is also virtual. To register for the programs, readers may visit www.christianalibrary.org or search for “Moores Memorial Library” on Facebook. “(Patrons may) go on the website and register for what virtual program (they) would like to get, then we send (them) the link that day,” Vandenbosch said. The Friends of the Moores Memorial Library have had to cancel their spring fundraisers, but they are planning a benefit barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 29, and a golf tournament in September. Atglen Public Library, 413 Valley Ave., Atglen, reopened with limited hours on June 29. Hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We are offering ‘deluxe window service.’ The ‘deluxe’ part means that, no matter what you need, please see us at the porch window first. YMCAfrom pg 1 assistance available. Students who qualify for Early Learning Resource Centers (ELRCs) are automatically eligible for the program. Karpas said that each session includes circle time and an opportunity for children to play at the YMCA playground, among other activities. “Students come in and start their day with a welcome and circle time, which is basically a discussion of how they are feeling and how the day will go,” he said. “They then progress to teacher-led learning centers and there is an outside play component. “It is a curriculum that a lot of child care centers use,” he added. “It’s a great benefit for families and way to help (youngsters) be better prepared socially as well.” Karpas noted that children will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing when the program begins in the fall. “We will follow CDC recommendations and mandates by the state,” he said. “(The children) will also be in stable groups - with their same teacher and friends throughout the day.” Karpas believes that children will be able to adapt to the COVID-19 restrictions. “We have a preschool open at Jennersville and we have 60 kids,” he said. “We do require masks for any child over the age of 2 unless there is a medical condition. The first couple of days it was a learning process. It’s surprising; (the children) are getting used to it pretty quickly.” He noted that the Jennersville YMCA was able to open its child care facilities in the yellow phase and has opened its gym and pool now that Pennsylvania has entered the green phase. “We are still taking our time in opening things and parts of the building. We are slowly getting back to normal,” he added. Financial assistance is available for all of the Y’s early learning programs, including sibling discounts and acceptance of the Pennsylvania subsidized program Child Care Works. Fire, rescue, and EMS companies hampered by lack of fundraising opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic can register now for grants to help cover expenses. The Office of the State Fire Commissioner will offer funding via the COVID-19 Crisis Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. Fire/rescue/EMS companies that received a grant award from the 2019-20 Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program (FCEMSGP) and register for the COVID-19 crisis grant program will receive an initial award equal to the amount they received from the 2019-20 FCEMSGP. The surplus funding in the program will be distributed to each eligible company that meets the funding criteria and submits a completed registration, including those that did not receive a 2019-20 FCEMSGP grant award. More information and registration instructions can be found by visiting www.osfc.pa.gov. Registration will be open until Friday, Aug. 7.

The historic home, located in Hibernia County Park near Wagontown, is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Pennsylvania Inventory of Historic Places. On Aug. 27, there will be a special preview of Kennett Square’s Occupation Day. “The Kennett Occupation Day program is an introduction to the actual live program that will take place in Kennett Borough on Sept. 10,” explained Marshall. “(Sept. 10 will be) 243 years to the day that over 15,000 Crown Forces occupied the area including and adjacent to the borough prior to the Battle of Brandywine on Sept. 11, 1777.” She added that despite the switch to a virtual tour, the Town Tours and Village Walks program remains popular. “We had 285 registrations (for the tour on July 16),” Marshall noted. “I know some of the many faithful Town Tour attendees were there.” All programs are free to attend; however, sign-up is required at https://chescoplanning.org/HisResources /TownTours.cfm.
