Making Masks For Those Who Read Lips

Community Input Sought On Atglen Parks

Elizabeth Martin models one of the masks she makes for those who read lips. Elizabeth, who is a student in the IU13 deaf and hard of hearing class that meets at Warwick High School, was inspired by her teacher to make the masks.

Then Beitzel shared that she was making masks with windows that allow for lip reading. “My teacher showed me one she made with the window,” said Elizabeth. “That inspired me to make more for other people.” Elizabeth searched online for designs before drawing her own design. The masks are made from cotton with vinyl in the center so the lips show. She makes the masks in small, medium, and large sizes for both adults and children, and she can make larger ones for adults if necessary. Sally noted that at certain times supplies to make the masks were hard to find. “We had to get inventive (when) there was a lack of materials,” she said. “We started with everything we could find at the house, but when she started selling them and she was selling out, we had to get more material and elastic.” When elastic for the earloops was hard to find, they decided to try hair bands, which Elizabeth said work well for this purpose. “It was an evolving (design),” Sally said. 50 Years Of Plenty And Gratitude

By Ann Mead Ash

When COVID-19 restrictions meant that Elizabeth Martin of Gap, a student in Janice Beitzel’s Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 deaf and hard of hearing class

located at Warwick High School, was no longer being bused to Lititz from Pequea Valley School District each weekday, she grew a little bored. Although distance learning began in April, by the end of that month, Elizabeth was looking for more activity, specifically activity that allowed her to make a contribution. “I normally sew or crochet,” said Elizabeth. “Since (the virus) was happening, I thought I should help (in some way). I started making the regular masks.” Using her grandmother Betty Risser’s sewing machine, Elizabeth could turn out a two-layer cotton mask fairly quickly. “At the beginning, I made the regular masks, and I sold them from a table outside my house,” reported Elizabeth, whose mother, Sally, noted that those masks sold well.

W hen it comes to publishing a book, there are primarily two ways to go: traditional or independent. Former Quarryville resident Lindsay Bandy opted to follow the traditional route for her historical novel, “Nemesis and the Swan,” which will be released in October. Lindsay first realized that she wanted to become a published author while an English major at Millersville University in the mid-2000s. As a teenager, Lindsay had used poetry as a way to process her emotions, but when she began to pursue publication, she discovered that it is difficult to get poetry published. Instead, she started writing her first historical novel. “I had no idea what I was doing, but it was really fun for me,” Lindsay recalled. See Local Author pg 9

Not just in your mailbox...

Atglen-area residents are invited to stop by the former Atglen Fire House at 217 Chester St. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, anytime between 3 and 6 p.m. to talk with the design team about the 4Parks Plan, which will outline how the borough’s four parks will be developed in the future. Social distancing protocols will be in place during the open house, and all attendees will be required to wear a mask. During the outdoor event, the street in front of the fire house will be closed to traffic while visitors view the proposed plans for the borough’s parks. “There will be five stations set up with canopies on top for shade. One will be a PPE (personal protective equipment)

Shady Maple Celebrates Milestone

Lindsay Bandy is the new youth services coordinator for the Manheim Community Library. The former Quarryville resident is the co-regional adviser of the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and is publishing her first book this fall.

In 1962, Henry and Edna Martin opened a produce stand along Route 23 in East Earl, under the shade of two large maple trees in their front yard. By the late 1960s, the Martins’ daughter, Miriam, had married Lebanon County native Marvin Weaver, and the pair had taken over the stand. According to Ashley Hopkins, marketing manager with Shady Maple Company, Marvin had a saying: “Pile it high, and watch it fly.” The saying See Shady Maple pg 4

The Weaver family, including (front, from left) Miriam, Marvin, (back) Phillip, Curt, and Linford, are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Shady Maple Farm Market as a produce stand owned by Miriam’s parents, Henry and Edna Martin.

“The task force developed the RFP (request for proposals) and interviewed the consultants,” said Andrews. “They narrowed it down and made the recommendation to borough council to hire SALT Design.” A meeting to introduce the plan was held in March before the coronavirus pandemic. “This is public meeting No. 2,” Andrews noted. “The first meeting was to vet out what the community really wants in their parks and give the community an opportunity to talk to the consultants. For this meeting (on Aug. 5), we have will have concept plans for those four parcels and we want to share them, and the consultants will be present to discuss ideas.” Some of the proposals for the parks include the development of a dog park. Another is to build a water spray park for children. Other ideas include creating natural play areas, traditional playgrounds, walking trails, basketball courts and a soccer field. “They are all proposals because we want to hear from the community,” Andrews said. “It’s not just Atglen residents; we get folks from outside (this area) who use our facilities.” As an added element to the open house, the task force designed an Atglen 4Parks Treasure Hunt. To take part, people are asked to visit the Church Street Park, Borough Hall and 206 Main St. and find the Atglen 4Parks Signs. Participants are then asked to review the draft park designs and use their cellphone’s camera to scan the QR code/bar code found on the design boards. Those who do not have internet access may pick up a paper survey form at borough hall prior to visiting the display boards. Those who complete a short survey will be entered to win a $50 gift card to a local restaurant. Andrews added that this is an exciting time for Atglen, as the borough looks to create parks that the public will enjoy. “We would not be where we are today without the state support for the funding, the task force and the borough council,” she said. “The outcome is to approve a master concept plan for each park.” For more information about the open house and the treasure hunt, readers may visit www.atglen.org.

station; the other remaining four will have be present, and they will do some interacdisplay boards,” explained borough man- tive activities (with sticky notes). The ager Caren Andrews. “The consultants will (activities) will be contactless so you don’t

have to touch anything. We want people to feel safe.” Andrews explained that last year, Atglen Borough Council appointed a task force to work on improving the borough’s park system. The borough obtained a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to fund development of a Master Parks Concept Plan for four boroughowned parcels. “One parcel is at borough hall, 120 Main St.; the second is at 206 Main St.,” Andrews said. “(The third) is an existing park that is underutilized - the Church Street Park, formerly called Civic Park - and the last is a 17-acre parcel that is undeveloped at the end of town on Valley Avenue. Most of that parcel is being farmed.” The planning grant allowed the borough to hire a consultant, SALT Design Studio.

referred to offering generous amounts for sale, initially of produce, but later of meats, bakery treats, and other food items, and then watching customers take advantage of the plenty as it flew off the shelves. “Everything is bigger and better at Shady Maple,” said Hopkins. Once the Weavers took over the roadside stand, the business began to grow. The Weavers first enclosed the stand with a block building in 1970, expanding to offer groceries that same year. In 1976, the store expanded to 45,000 square feet, and in 1982 it increased to 72,000 square feet. In 2009, it grew to 130,000 square feet - the size it is today. Groceries found in the store now include more than 300 types of tea bags and Shady’s own bulk food items in the freezer department. The dairy department features more than 340 varieties of yogurt, several of which are locally made. The initial stand offered local produce. Today, the produce section features more than 300 items, but fruits and vegetables are still carefully chosen by the owners. For many years, Marvin drove a truck weekly to the Philadelphia produce auction, leaving in the wee hours each Tuesday. Now his son Linford, who oversees the farm market and serves as co-CEO of the company with his brother Phillip, makes the trip. During the summer months, much of the produce sold is grown within 10 miles of the store. In 1974, the in-store bakery was added, creating the flavored breads (a brainchild of Marvin’s on a sleepless night), creative cakes, whoopie pies in several flavors, and doughnuts with which the name Shady Maple has become synonymous. Today, more than 60 employees work in the bakery area, which often sells more than 7,000 doughnuts in a day. In fact, the store sold more than 3 million doughnuts in 2019. In 2013, Shady got its own mascot when Whoop E. Pie was introduced to the delight of many. By 1976, a meat-cutting area had been added to the store. The meat counter offers personal service that hearkens back to the days of the neighborhood butcher and cuts meats for free.

During this summer’s ground beef sale, nearly the equivalent of two 18-wheelers of hamburger was sold. In addition, the self-service area features a section of inhouse smoked products; store-made bacon is the best-seller. Visitors to the store will also find a 50foot deli featuring 10 types of sweet bologna and serving more than 600 customers each Saturday. A separate soup and salad area sells up to 1,500 pounds of macaroni salad each month. Homemade pizzas sold in that area increased in sales during the pandemic from up to 80 per day to between 100 and 150. The Weavers’ sons, Curt, along with Phillip and Linford, grew up spending time in the store. Phil, the oldest, officially went to work there in 1983, followed by Curt in 1985 and Lin in 1989. Phil and Lin became co-presidents in 2015. Marvin acknowledges that timing has made a difference in the growth of Shady. After expanding in 1982, the Weavers saved money for the next remodel, but zoning restrictions held them off until 1992. Although that expansion cost more than originally planned, Marvin saw the bright side. “We were in a recession. That’s the time to go for it. You get the best prices. We saved 10% to 20%.” As the market has grown, the Weavers have continued to express their gratitude for all they have been given. According to Miriam, God has blessed them tremendously. The market now employs more than 380 people, and the Weavers know that each one’s attitude contributes to a positive shopping experience for customers. The Weavers are also grateful for the customers who come from near and far to shop at the store. Several events have been planned to celebrate the anniversary. An outdoor vendor fair will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. From Wednesday, Aug. 12, through Tuesday, Aug. 18, a guessing game giveaway will be held at the store. Visitors to the store can enter to win a grand prize drawing from Wednesday, Aug. 5, to Friday, Aug. 21. Winners will be announced on Saturday, Aug. 22, the same day a sidewalk food fair will be held at the farm market. More information about the market may be found at www.shady -maple.com/farm-market.

COMMUNITYCOURIER - Octorara Edition - August 5, 2020 - 9

After graduating, Lindsay married Clay Bandy and subsequently had two daughters. Lindsay became intimately acquainted with children’s literature by reading to her girls. As the children grew, Lindsay wrote poetry with them, and she began thinking again about publishing. With a new interest in children’s literature, Lindsay found the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and joined a critique group. She sold several poems to Highlights for Children magazine and volunteered to act as blogmaster for the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of SCBWI. She was later appointed co-regional adviser. Lindsay and her team plan two big conferences for writers every year: one in the spring at the Highlights Foundation retreat center and another in the fall in Philadelphia. Lindsay recommends that aspiring authors attend conferences like those, especially when representatives of major publishing houses participate.

“It’s a really nice way to get professional feedback on your work and make personal connections that might get you somewhere,” Lindsay said. The educational opportunities afforded by conferences are also valuable, she asserted. “You meet other people in all different stages of the process. The peer connections are definitely awesome,” Lindsay reflected. “Before I joined SCBWI, I had no idea of what I was doing in publishing. They gave me all the resources to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.” For Lindsay, “getting there” meant pursuing the traditional publishing route. She wanted the support of a publisher, which independently published authors do not have. Lindsay’s publisher is helping to publicize her book, so the marketing does not rest solely on her shoulders. For authors who are seeking traditional publishing, Lindsay offered advice gleaned from personal experience and years of SCBWI membership:

Lindsay said. “The same works with novels. I try to at least try (the suggested edits) first. Sometimes people can push you to make something better.” Lindsay recently accepted the role of youth services coordinator at Manheim Community Library, and Clay is working in sales for an agricultural publication, so the Bandys have moved to Brownstown to shorten their respective commutes. Lindsay is excited about her new role. “I love working with kids, sharing books with them, and finding books they love,” she said. Currently, the library’s Summer Reading Program is entirely online, but Lindsay is anticipating in-person activities. She would like to offer writing workshops for children and teenagers so they can be creative in a supportive environment. “I would like to see programs that pair up kids with other members of the community - older adults, teenagers with tutoring - to get some intergenerational stuff going on,” she added. Interested individuals may contact Lindsay by visiting www.LindsayBandyBooks.com.

- Don’t send your manuscript to everybody. “Agents are looking for specific things,” Lindsay said. “Research the agents and editors who are interested in what you have.” - Get a lot of feedback and polish your book before you submit it. “You get a lot of rejections, and you have to be stubborn. You have to be hard on yourself,” Lindsay remarked. “People who do it have revised and revised. It’s a long process.” - Don’t be fooled: Picture books have fewer words and pages than novels, but that doesn’t make them a breeze to complete. “The words themselves can be easier, but finding a niche and getting those words to work as a 32-page illustrated book can be harder,” Lindsay said, pointing out that the printing process constrains book size. Authors need to have a unique idea and then consider page turns, what words will be on what pages, the intended reading level, and how illustrations will fit. - Be flexible. “Publishers don’t want you to illustrate your own work unless you’re a professional illustrator. You don’t choose,”

DVGRR was one of 64 animal welfare groups selected from 288 applicants to receive a grant to help senior dogs. According to John Plummer, DVGRR executive director, the funding will help dogs like Palpatine, a 9-year-old dog that arrived from another shelter.
