Also contained in the time capsule was the Sesquicentennial commemorative booklet that was featured in the Octorara Community Courier. Having a time capsule in Parkesburg is a tradition. The Parkesburg Centennial time capsule, which was buried in 1997, was opened on May 22 at Minch Park during the Sesquicentennial’s closing ceremony. The items inside included CDs, historical items and a print of the Parkesburg Train Station, which was later put up for auction. “We notified (people) that they had items in the time capsule and they could pick them up,” said Treadway. Items are being stored until they are claimed by family members. A list of unclaimed items can be found at www.parkesburg.org. The Borough of Parkesburg, which was incorporated in 1872, celebrated its 150th anniversary on May 20 through 22. The event featured a parade, historical demonstrations and exhibits, live music, a display for antique vehicles and a Children’s History Carnival. As the time capsule was being buried on July 30, Mariano stated, “Let’s commit this to the deep.” The time capsule will be unearthed in July 2047.

“This is our first coffeehouse concert, where we will take over the library for a casual performance. This is an all-ages concert, and kids are encouraged to wear their mermaid and pirate costumes,” said library director Robbyn Kehoe. “It’s after hours, and we will set the band up and people can sit wherever they want in the library.” Those who attend the event will be eligible to receive a Plundering Pirates patch. “We have these patches that are like Scout badges - round and with really nice embroidery,” Kehoe explained. “If they come to a program, they can earn a patch.” Teen Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 4:15 p.m. to discuss “The Thing About Jellyfish,” and the Adult Book Club will meet on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss “The Sweetness of Water.” Also on Aug. 24, children may read to a friendly dog as part of the PAWS for Reading program. Children may register for a one-on-one 15-minute session between 11 a.m. and noon. Word Catching for Teens will be offered via Zoom on Wednesday, Aug. 17, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Recommended for patrons age 13 and up, the program will focus on writing and will include sharing current works in progress. The group meets on the third Wednesday of each month. The Monday Mile walking group will meet on Monday, Aug. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m. Partcipans will meet at the library and then set out on a walk around the neighborhood. The event will be held weather permitting. Ongoing programs include Cast Off With Knitting, which is offered every Wednesday from 3 to 4 p.m. Participants socialize while working on needle arts of any kind, including crocheting, knitting, embroidery, crewel and hand-quilting. All in-person programs will be held in the library’s new location at 121 Main St., Atglen. Kehoe reported that the library’s move from 413 Valley Ave. has proved popular with patrons. “From when we moved on March 28 through July 28, circulation is up 71%,” she said. “Program participation is up 68% and door accounts - people coming through the door - is up 185%. It has almost tripled.”

There is no admission fee, and parking is free. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. Registration for stage performances will begin at 9 a.m. The music will begin on stage at 10 a.m.; the opening act will be Remington Riders. “(Musicians can) come right up to the registration table and there are time slots, and we have the bands (choose) the time slot that works for them,” explained Katie Cook, program and events coordinator. “Beyond the row of trees will be the food truck village and craft vendors as well.” She noted that there will be 10 food trucks on-site, along with a sale of event T-shirts and hats. New to this year’s event will be a giant bubble performance by Bubbletopia from 1 to 4 p.m. Other children’s activities will include a gaga pit, a First Down Football inflatable and an axethrowing inflatable. “Kids love this attraction; it’s all Velcro, obviously,” noted Cook. Since she is new to her position with Chester County Parks + Preservation, Cook will be visiting the Old Fiddler’s Picnic for the first time
this year. “From what I have been told, it has a ‘hangout’ atmosphere. There is always someone playing (music),” she said. “I will be seeing it for the first time, so I’m excited.” Throughout the day, visitors may hear various instruments, such as guitars, banjos and mandolins with musicians performing bluegrass, old-time and gospel music. Children and those new to stringed instruments are encouraged to learn by observing and talking to the musicians. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Tents and canopies are not permitted within Fiddler’s Field. Alcohol is prohibited. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash. Also included during the day will be tours of Hibernia Mansion, located in the park. Visitors can take a wagon shuttle or walk along park roads to visit the mansion. Guided tours will be available at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. A suggested donation will be collected per person. The mansion was the home of many ironmasters and their families from the late 1700s through the late 1800s. The threestory mansion is fully restored and furnished with original artwork and furniture. The rain date for the Old Fiddler’s Picnic is Sunday, Aug. 14. For complete details, visit www.chesco .org/2415/Old-Fiddlers -Picnic.

can choose to attend the morning session from 9 a.m. to noon or the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m., with lunch between the sessions. The event, sponsored by Benchmark Federal Credit Union, is being organized by the Chester County Community Collaborative. Activities will be offered in a spacious auditorium where there will be exhibitor and vendor tables spread throughout the two-story venue. There will also be outdoor activities for children. Kim Andrews, executive director of the Fund for Women and Girls, will open the conference as the featured guest speaker. Each workshop series will kick off with a presentation on financial literacy, hosted by Benchmark Federal Credit Union, with an option to register for a personal session to review individual credit reports. Additional workshops will include professional wardrobe tips and shopping on a budget with Wings for Success; understanding sexual harassment and assault with the Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County; nutritional insights and diabetes guidance from Penn Medicine; and home buying and parenting workshops, with Luis Benitez, presented in Spanish. In addition, the Belinda R. Harrison Award will be presented, honoring a working single mom who has overcome adversity and is active in her community. Harrison was a single mother who worked for years in Chester County’s social services and in her community, dedicating her life to empowering women and the underserved. The theme of this year’s conference is “Honor the Past, Treasure the Present, Shape the Future.” For more information and to register, visit www.single motherscc.org. Follow the Chester County Single Mothers’ Conference on Facebook and Instagram @SingleMothersCC.
