Chester County OIC Seeks Volunteer Tutors By Francine Fulton
The Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) is currently seeking people from the community who would like to make the difference in the lives of adult learners by becoming volunteer tutors. No experience is necessary, but volunteers must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. According to Felice Burstein, adult tutoring assistant program coordinator, there is a current waiting list of 38 people located throughout Chester County who are in need of volunteer tutors to help them improve their English language skills. “We currently have students from 30 countries who want to learn English, as well as U.S.-born students who want to get their GED,” she said. Prospective tutors interested in the program are invited to attend an
upcoming training program. It is only necessary to attend one of the sessions. The training sessions will take place on Monday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and on Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Burke Room of the Chester County Library, 450 Exton Square Parkway, Exton. Those who would like to get started right away can take part in a mini-training session before the program’s training session in the fall. “We have lots of resources, and I work with (tutors) to get them started. We do some one-onone training,” Burstein said. “It is not required, but we encourage them to attend the (formal) training.” Tutors are asked to meet with a student for a minimum of three hours a week for at least one year. “They have to meet at a public location; most meet See OIC pg 7

Youths Share Their Knowledge, CMBC To Kick Off Awana Skills At Annual 4-H Fair By Ann Mead Ash
By Francine Fulton
Youths from 4-H clubs throughout Chester County proudly showed the animals they have been raising throughout the year, as well as their projects on a variety of topics, during the Chester County 4-H Fair held Aug. 6 to 11 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook. The event also gave youths an opportunity to share their knowledge with others. On Aug. 7, free tours of the fair were offered to the community. The tours were conducted by 4-H members, including Zach Johnson of Elverson, who is a member of the Chester County 4-H Swine Club and the Chester County 4-H Livestock Judging Team. “(The Swine Club) is actually the largest (4-H) club, consisting of over 60 people,” Zach said, noting that the club See 4-H Fair pg 5

As Awana embarks on its 35th year at Calvary Monument Bible Church (CMBC), 1660 Mine Road, Paradise, Heather Ensslen, who directs Awana with her husband, Michael, asked pastor emeritus Bob Reid for memories of the program’s beginnings at the church. “Awana began at CMBC by faith,” recalled Reid. “ We had no program like this in the area. I had heard of … how effective (Awana) was at Moody Church in Chicago.” Reid remembered that a group prayed and trained, and the Lord provided a pastor to be the first commander. “From that See CMBC pg 2

time on … God has continued to raise up adult leaders who love the Lord, love children, and are willing to invest in lives for the next generation,” noted Reid. The CMBC annual Awana kickoff will be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. According to Heather, the event will include a candy drop, games, and an opportunity for parents to be able to learn more about Awana. Children who wish to attend Awana will be able to register and receive handbooks and uniforms. Awana will begin at the church on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 6:40 p.m. There is a charge for handbooks and uniforms, but scholarships are available. According to Heather, candy will drop from a helicopter shortly after the kickoff begins. “Children will be able to watch the helicopter drop candy from the sky and then run through the field to gather the candy,” she noted. In addition, a bounce house will be on-site, and attendees will have opportunities to have their faces painted. Carnival-style games, including a bean bag toss, duck pond, lollipop ring toss, Plinko, and more, will be available to play. A balloon and a photo booth will be on-site. A free meal available at the kickoff will include hot dogs, chips, carrots with ranch dressing, applesauce, a choice of two beverages, and a dessert. The purpose of CMBC’s Awana ministry is to help children know, love, and serve Christ. “Each Awana night is filled with energy, fellowship, and spiritual growth,” said Heather. “The evening is packed with games, Scripture memory, singing, and a Bible message.” According to Heather, each meeting includes four sections, beginning with an opening
ceremony for all students. The opening includes prayer, singing, club pledges, and announcements. Following the opening, classes, which are divided by age, meet in large groups for Bible lessons, including introduction and explanation of Scripture as contained in the handbooks. Club members also meet in small groups of up to eight members with two leaders for further discussion of the night’s Bible story. “During this time, the clubbers will recite their memorized verses to their leaders,” said Heather, who added that a craft activity is usually part of small group time. Club nights also include game time, during which children take part in high-energy group games on Awana’s unique game circle. Awana classes are open to children from 3 years old through sixth grade. Children ages 3 to 5 will be part of Cubbies, and those in kindergarten through second grade can join Sparks. Children in grades three through six join T&T. Heather added that Awana’s meetings have special themes. This year, some of the themes will be Neon Night, where children will be encouraged to wear neon colors, and Operation Christmas Child Night, where children will be able to contribute toys and toiletries to boxes to be sent to children around the world. Giant Game Night and Crazy Hair Night will also be held. Readers who would like more information about Awana or to register for the kickoff event may visit www.calvary monument.org or search for “CMBC (Calvary Monument Bible Church)” on Facebook. Individuals who have specific questions may email awana@ calvarymonument.org.
ARRIVING LATE?
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states,” SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight.” Last year’s show was the 10th hosted by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Pontiacs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back,” marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amos Herr Park, 1670 Nissley Road, Landisville. Registration will be open from 8 to 11 a.m. A registration fee will be charged for exhibited vehicles. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. All Pontiac vehicles, not just GTOs, are welcome at the show. Every entry will be photographed, and registrants will receive framed copies. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. “Each year our awards are changed out to keep things fresh,” Schreck noted. The show will again be accompanied by a model car contest for children and adults. Show
registrants may enter the model car contest at no cost, but other competitors may enter for a donation. Model cars will be limited to plastic assembly; diecast models will not be permitted. Families are welcome to attend the show. Children and women will be especially invited to cast votes for their favorite entries. A disc jockey will broadcast music from the 1960s through the early 1970s, with some older music thrown in for good measure. A caterer will sell breakfast and lunch foods, as well as ice cream, french fries, and beverages. In the event of rain, the show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the same time and location. A portion of the proceeds from the show will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania. The SVGTO collects donations yearly and presents them at Christmastime, when the club cooks one of two meals that it annually prepares for families staying at the home in Hershey. The SVGTO was named the 2013 GTOAA Chapter of the Year and is one of the most active of the 38 chapters in the national organization. It has 90 members in states along the East Coast, ranging as far south as Florida. “We’re more regional than just the Susquehanna Valley region,” Schreck commented. For more information or to register for the All Pontiac Show, readers may visit www.svgto.com, email svgtoshow@svgto.com, or call 717-405-2178, 717-521-8277, 717-615-7117, or 717-880-5692. The SVGTO may also be found on Facebook. David Keller has been welcomed into the position of executive director of Oxford Area Neighborhood Services Center (NSC) as of July 23. Keller has more than 20 years of experience working with nonprofit organizations, particularly in the arts, and most recently he was with the Smyrna Opera House in Smyrna, Del. Keller said that one reason he was attracted to the role of executive director for NSC is that he is used to living and working in small towns. “I grew up in southwestern New Jersey in Salem County; it’s very rural,” Keller said. “When I was looking for a new job opportunity, I saw the listing for the center and immediately was intrigued. Early on in my life, my parents were churchgoers, and they instilled in me the love and the need to give back to the community.” He explained that he had served as his church’s mission chair in the past, running that committee for about three years. “That committee did many of the things this organization does, so I felt like I was a good fit,” he added. NSC provides direct services such as a food bank, fuel assistance and help with emergency needs. The organization also helps people access information and provides referrals to services and programs NSC does not directly offer. The organization helps link volunteers who want to help with those in need of assistance, plus it provides office and operating
space for a variety of health and human service agencies. Keller is looking forward to working with the NSC board members. “I could feel their passion for the organization. Knowing that the board was so committed to the organization, I felt like it could be a good fit,” he stated. “I could jump right in and use my 20-plus years of experience in nonprofits to advance the organization to the next level.” Keller brings a number of positive traits to the new job. “I think I’m very energetic, first and foremost. I think that I’m a good communicator, a good people person,” he said. “One of the directives from the board is to get out in the community and represent the organization. I feel like I would do that well.” Keller noted that he would like to become involved in the community, partnering with other organizations and increasing awareness of NSC. Keller is just the third executive director NSC has had since its founding in 1971. Coming into such an environment, Keller is not planning on making immediate changes. “I think we need, as an organization, to take a step back and evaluate where we are and get an overview of where we stand and where we can improve,” Keller said. “I think little things matter, so I think we need to find those little nuances we can correct and make better, and that will help propel us into the future.” NSC board chair Rudy Allen and search committee member

Justin Hostetter are both enthusiastic about Keller. “We were very impressed with his willingness to go out and become engaged in the community,” Hostetter said, adding that one of the objectives is to expand NSC’s volunteer base. Keller’s wife, Brittany, works as a marketing manager in Wilmington, Del. They plan to relocate from their current home in New Jersey to an area that will be a closer commute for both of them. Keller is a Philadelphia sports fan and an avid tennis player. He is also interested in travel in the United States, as well as in American history. He plays guitar and mandolin in an acoustic country/rock band called Along the Road. “It’s a great cathartic release to get to play music and have fun together and sing and have a good time,” he said. NSC is located at 35 N. Third St., Oxford. NSC also operates the Neighborhood Thrift Shop at 21 S. Third St., Oxford, where donated items are made available to clients or sold at reasonable prices to local shoppers. Veterans from pg 1 had gone to the Vet (Veterans Stadium) but never had a chance to go to the Linc,” Turner related. “Joy, Sam and I sat back and were lucky enough to watch them talk and tell stories about their Eagles (memories).” Turner said the highlight of the event came at the end of the evening. “At the end of the practice, they brought about 100 veterans all dressed in their uniforms and they stood on one sideline from end zone to end zone and on the other side was a whole line of Eagles players,” Turner explained. “They all walked to the center of the field, shook hands and the players took their jerseys off and gave them to the veterans. It was really moving.” He said that the local veterans really enjoyed their special treatment at the practice. “The Eagles showed their love and respect for our veterans, and our veterans appreciated it,” Turner said. “It was nice that they got a little bit of the VIP treatment.” David’s Drive is named for David Turner Jr., an avid Eagles fan, who was a cashier at the canteen at the VA hospital when he died in 2009 at the age of 20. His family started the charity in 2010 to improve the lives of veterans. The organization’s motto is “Helping Veterans Because We Should.” Since its formation, David’s Drive has donated more than $1 million to support veterans. In addition, the organization sponsors parades and picnics for the veterans, along with other social outings. David’s Drive also assists veterans transitioning from homelessness to independent living through the Housing and Urban Development - Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program. The program provides housing vouchers to homeless veterans and gives them an opportunity to live independently

When the David’s Drive 831 charity was provided with tickets to a recent practice session of the Philadelphia Eagles, representatives of the organization immediately donated a majority of those free passes to veterans who reside at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Thirty individuals, including veterans and their support staff, along with David’s Drive committee members, were able to visit the Aug. 5 practice of the championship football team, held at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The event was designated as Military Appreciation Night. “We had seven (people) from David’s Drive (attend); the rest were veterans and support staff,” explained David Turner Sr., founder and president of David’s Drive. The veterans were bused to the stadium by the VA and provided with box lunches. Upon arrival at the stadium and after the resolution of a computer ticketing glitch, the members of the group were surprised to learn that they would be given access to club-level seating. “It took us a while to get in and once we got in, I have a buddy in the Eagles (organization) and he met us at the door and ushered us through, and guest services gave us passes for the club level,” said Turner. “We were treated to club-level seating, which was air conditioned, and there was complimentary food and beverages and sideline access.” Turner, who was accompanied by his wife, Joy, and their daughter, Sam, said he enjoyed visiting with the veterans, most of whom had never visited the Eagles’ stadium. “One of the vets told me his mom was an Eagles fan. A variety of projects were on display at the Chester County 4-H Fair, including one entry that featured animals made from squash and zucchini. completed during the year by 4-H members from throughout Chester County. There were displays of handmade quilts and tote bags, homegrown vegetables, posters, woodwork and more. Toni Stuetz, the 4-H youth development coordinator, said Penn State Extension and Chester County 4-H were active this summer in communities

The summer project camps, for youths age 8 and older, included Babysitting, Candy Making, Animal Science, Sewing, Plant Energy and Backyard Plants and Insects. Camp locations included the Chester County Extension office in West Chester and the Romano 4-H Center. Grace Covenant Church invites the community to an outdoor worship service to be held on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 10 a.m. at Miller Park, 220 Miller Way, Exton. The onehour service will be followed by a free picnic, along with lawn games and other activities. According to pastor Tim Brown, the outdoor service is being held in place of the church’s normal 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service that week. “This is the first time for us to do a Sunday morning service outdoors, he said, noting that the park is located a few minutes from the church off Swedesford Road, behind the Whiteland Towne Center. Brown will lead the service. The special guest musician will be Christopher Wright, a worship leader, singer and songwriter experienced in leading gatherings of all sizes. In 1995, Wright founded Blessed Hurricane Ministries, a concert and
worship ministry that has taken him to churches, camps and conferences throughout the world. More information about Wright is available at www.christopherwright.com. Brown noted that the park has a gazebo, but there is no seating, so attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. A picnic, featuring chicken and side dishes prepared by church members, will follow the service at around 11:45 a.m. Brown said all are welcome to attend the service whether they belong to a church or not. He said that the service will be typical of the one held on Sundays at Grace Covenant, only it will be adapted for the outdoors. “Normally, we have projectors, but we will give out handouts with the readings and words to the hymns, he said. “It will be fun; we are looking forward to it. In order to ensure that enough food is prepared, church members request that attendees preregister for the

at libraries,” Burstein noted. “Three hours is a long time, so most tutors meet twice a week for an hour-and-a-half session.” Tutors are matched with students based on their preferences and geographical location. “Some people want someone from Latin America or someone who is fine-tuning their grammar,” noted Burstein. “Some people want (to tutor) someone who barely speaks English. It is really challenging, but this (volunteer experience can be) the most rewarding.” Burstein explained that students’ skills are tested when entering the program, and they are asked what goals they have. All the information is given to the tutors before they meet the students. In addition to studying to receive their high school equivalency diploma, some students are studying to become United States citizens, while others have goals such as improving their reading, writing and spelling. “Some students want to go the doctor with their kids and not have their kids translate, or they want to go to the store (and be able to read the signs and prices),” Burstein noted. She said tutors must be kind and patient and be willing to stay with the program. “I think the main quality of tutors is commitment - willing to work and a desire to help another adult for 12 hours a month,” said Burstein. “The (tutors who) do the best are the ones who are committed to it. The pairs that are successful develop relationships.” She said that the results of the tutoring provide tangible proof of the program’s success. “We’ve had tutors help people get their citizenship or get a new job,” said Burstein. “We had one student who worked on a landscape crew. Because his English was better, he became a foreman.” Burstein is also a tutor, and her student, who is from China, is learning to improve her pronunciation skills. “I learned a lot about her culture,” Burstein said, noting that she also had to brush up on her own grammar skills in order to be a successful tutor. “Tutors get a lot out of (the ex perience). Tutors find it rewarding. You can see the rewards because you feel like you’ve helped someone.” For more information about becoming a volunteer tutor or to register for the training session, readers may contact Burstein at f burstein@ cc-oic.org or 610-280-2618. Pennsylvania residents and visitors are urged to take precautions to avoid ticks and mosquitoes when spending time outdoors this summer. Spending time outdoors and participating in physical activity is a key part of living a healthy life; however, people need to be aware of ticks and mosquitoes and the serious diseases they carry. As Lyme disease and West Nile virus become more prevalent in Pennsylvania, it is important for people to protect themselves when spending time outdoors. This year, funding was bolstered to protect Pennsylvanians from Lyme disease, Zika virus, and West Nile virus through increases to improve mosquito and tick surveillance and provide education about the diseases associated with these insects. Through simple means like wearing insect repellent and avoiding peak mosquito activity times, Pennsylvanians can reduce their risks of mosquito bites and

are also essential when enjoying public lands. Before heading outdoors, it is important to cover exposed skin, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing to aid in insect detection, and use an insect repellent containing 20 percent or more DEET. Once returning home, people should immediately check themselves, children, and pets for ticks. Then, individuals should take a shower to remove any ticks that may be attached to their skin. Clothing and gear should be checked carefully and put in the dryer on high to kill any ticks. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include a bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph nodes. It is important to know that someone bit by a tick carrying Lyme disease may not always get a bull’s-eye rash. Anyone who believes they have been bitten by a tick should speak to a doctor immediately. Antibiotic treatment during the early stages of Lyme disease can help prevent the onset of more severe symptoms. If not treated promptly, Lyme disease may lead to severe health concerns affecting the

heart, joints, and nervous system. West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes that breed in areas with standing and stagnant water. These areas include urban catch basins, clogged gutters, discarded tires, poorly maintained swimming pools, flower pots, roof gutters, and other containers that hold water. The Department of Environmental Protection surveys communities affected by West Nile virus each year and monitors cases of the virus in humans, mosquitoes, birds, and horses. In 2017, there were 20 human cases of West Nile virus reported in Pennsylvania. So far in 2018, no positive human cases have been reported. Symptoms of West Nile virus are often flulike and can include a fever, headache, body aches, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, and typically only last a few days. However, West Nile virus can cause a serious neurological infection, including encephalitis and meningitis. Symptoms of these infections include a severe headache, high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, paralysis, possible confusion and disorientation, tremors, and even a coma.

possibly being exposed to West Nile Virus. In 2017, there were 11,900 cases of Lyme disease recorded in Pennsylvania. Throughout the last several years, the state has consistently recorded one of the highest counts of suspected Lyme disease cases in the United States. Blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, are the most common carrier of Lyme disease. Ticks typically thrive in tall grass, brush, and wooded areas, but deer ticks have been found in every county in the state and can live in any habitat. Ticks can infect humans year-round, but are most likely to do so from late spring through the summer months. W hether visiting one of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks or hiking through more than 2.2 million acres of state forestland, outdoors enthusiasts must be aware of their surroundings. The first line of defense against Lyme disease and any other tick-borne illness is to avoid tick-infested habitats, such as areas dense with shrubbery or tall grass. According to organizer Phil Snader, the 2017 event attracted 160 shooters for the morning event and 44 shooters for the bonus afternoon round. “We fed (brunch to) 180 people last year,” noted Snader. “Our numbers have continued to increase.” The 2018 shoot will be held at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 7 a.m. until noon. A bonus shoot will be held from noon to 3 p.m. There is a fee to take part in the morning shoot, which includes brunch, a speaker, and opportunities to win door prizes. The price will be discounted for those under age 16. A separate price will be offered for those who take part in the bonus shoot. The shoot will consist of a 30-target course featuring North American wildlife 3-D targets, including turkey and a bobcat. Organizers noted that about half the targets are deer. The course

will be open from 7 to 10 a.m., when a hot brunch will be served. The speaker during brunch will be Frank Rice, pastor at Ephrata Grace Fellowship Church, who will give a short meditation on a hunting-related topic. The course will reopen from 11 a.m. to noon to conclude the morning shoot. As in years past, the shoot will feature door prizes consisting of hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $100,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. New Theater Company Sets Auditions By Francine Fulton
Revival Productions, a new nonprofit theater company in Coatesville, recently announced that it will hold open auditions for its upcoming performance of “Miscast Broadway.” The show will feature traditional Broadway tunes by unexpected performers. “‘Miscast Broadway’ is a show where actors, singers and dancers perform popular Broadway songs, but with a twist - the song the performer chooses must not match their type, age or gender,” explained Vinnie Zambuto, the theater’s director of marketing. He cited an example of an older woman or man singing “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” which is normally performed by young orphans in the Broadway play “Annie.” “(The goal) is to mix things up and be a little silly,” he said. Auditions will be held on Thursday, Aug 23, beginning at
6:30 p.m. at the Gordon Early Literacy Center, 351 Kersey St., Coatesville. Those wishing to audition must register in advance at www.revivalproductions.com/ auditions. “The revue concept is popular among theaters all around the country,” noted Zambuto. “We will put together a show of people singing and dancing. It will be individual performances, but everyone will rehearse together and create a cohesive show.” Performers are asked to prepare two 32-bar cuts, an up-tempo tune and a ballad unlike their normal “type.” Performers should be prepared to dance, if asked. If needed, a dance call will take place at approximately 8:15 p.m. An accompanist will be provided. The performers must be age 16 or older and must prepare a dance or tune that is family-friendly. “They should have musical ability and a theater performance
AME Church To Host Tent Revival background,” Zambuto noted. “Miscast Broadway” will be performed at the Gordon Center on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. All proceeds from ticket sales will go toward funding Revival’s 2019 performance season and its Youth Summer Theatre Camp series. “The (Gordon Early Literacy Center) is located two blocks off Lincoln Highway,” noted Zambuto. “The school district has given us this space to use as our theater. It is a full auditorium with over 500 seats.” Revival Productions was founded in October of 2017. The goal of the theater is to provide quality and affordable live entertainment in the city of Coatesville, which is curently undergoing a revitalization. West Fallowfield Christian School (WFCS), 795 Fallowfield Road, Atglen, is currently accepting registrations for the 2018-19 school year. West Fallowfield offers classes for students in preschool through eighth grade. In addition, the school offers a high school co-op for ninth through 11th grades. In 2016, WFCS opened The Academy for incoming students in ninth through 11th grades. The school serves as a resource for families by helping students meet homeschool requirements, including the compilation of the student work portfolio. The college-style model provides students accountability while they learn to manage their time effectively. Core subjects of English, American literature, algebra 2, advanced algebra, trigonometry, geometry, biology, physics, American history, world history, Bible and Spanish will be taught two days a week on campus. There will also be opportunities to gain extra-curricular credits at an additional cost. There is also a pay-per-class option available for students to register for individual courses of their choosing. Qualified teachers will prepare lesson plans for the remaining days of the week. Grading and portfolio assistance will also be provided by the staff. Beginning this fall, the Little Falcons Preschool program will offer a full-day option on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The multi-age classroom will feature hands-on curriculum that incorporates reading readiness, math skills, language arts, pre-handwriting, science, arts and crafts, music and movement, drama, devotions, Bible, Spanish, and an introduction to sign language. Interscholastic opportunities for middle school students are available in the Fine Arts and athletics. Girls’ athletics include volleyball, soccer, basketball and track and field. Boys’ athletics include soccer, basketball, volleyball and track and field. In addition to the core subjects, middle school students choose from a variety of elective subjects to broaden their interests and learning. WFCS also offers clubs once a week to middle school students as well. All students participate in music and art programs. WFCS has a full comprehensive resource room to offer academic and learning support. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides additional reading and speech therapy support. Bus transportation is supplied for students residing in the Avon Grove, Coatesville, Octorara, Oxford, Pequea, Solanco, and Unionville-Chadds Ford districts. Financial aid is available. The Department of Health shares important tips to keep families safe in extreme heat this summer. During the heat, it is important to protect oneself from harmful ultraviolet radiation and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses. Several safety tips are recommended to help people prepare for the summer weather. People should remember to wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing; a hat or visor; sunglasses; and SPF 15 or higher sunscreen and reapply as necessary. To stay hydrated, people should drink plenty of water throughout the day and not wait until they are thirsty; outdoor workers should drink between two and four cups of water every hour; avoid consuming caffeinated, alcoholic, or sugary beverages; and replace salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks. To safely exercise during the summer, people should limit outdoor exercise and stay indoors in air conditioning on hot days; exercise early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and pace oneself when running, walking, or otherwise exerting one’s body. To protect others, children, older adults, or pets should never be left behind in a vehicle. Individuals who may be more at risk from extreme temperatures should be checked on, including infants and young children, people age 65 and older, and people with chronic medical conditions. It is also important to know the difference between heat-related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms of a heat stroke include a high body temperature (above 103 F); red, hot, and dry skin, but no sweating; a rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea; confusion; and unconsciousness. If someone is having a heat stroke, it is important to first call 9-1-1. After calling for help, the person should be taken to a shady area and cooled down quickly by putting them in a tub of cool water or spraying them with a garden hose. The victim should not be given any fluids, including water, to drink. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, fainting, and nausea or vomiting. The person should be assisted in cooling off and seek medical attention if symptoms are severe, symptoms last more than one hour, or the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure. During extreme heat waves, cooling centers are opened in cities across Pennsylvania for individuals without air conditioning. To find a cooling center, readers may contact the local municipality or county office. Additional information on how to prepare for summer weather can be found at www.health.pa.gov.
