BY FRANCINE FULTON Agolf tournament as well as a yard sale and chicken barbecue are being planned as fundraisers by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library and the library board of directors. Proceeds from the events will go directly to fund library operations. The 13th annual library golf tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 29, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. A light lunch will be provided at noon, and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, catered by Wayne Buckwalter Jr., will be served at the conclusion of the tournament. The single-player fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner and on-course beverages. “The tournament is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it allows us to continue to provide reading materials to people of all ages,” said Robin Coffroth, board chairman. “The library also provides computer access to those who don’t have it and many programs to enrich the lives of our Preregistrationpatrons.”is encouraged; registration forms are available at the library. Golfers may also register by calling 717-951-8713. Walk-in registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, space permitting. Golfers may sign up with friends as a group of four or enter as an individual and be placed with a team. There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closest-to-the-pin, longest drive for men and for ladies and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and second-place teams, and there will be a cash prize for a hole in one, compliments of Hershey Motors. There will also be door prizes, including gift cards from local businesses. This tournament is designed for amateur golfers, and no prizes will be awarded to professionals. New sponsors of the golf tournament this year are Summers & Zim’s of Atglen and state Rep. Brian Cutler, as well as Pine Creek Animal Hospital of Gap, which includes practice manager Doris Zimmerman and Lois Lantz, veterinary technician.

The Chester County commissioners recently approved the awarding of $3.2 million in open space preservation and park improvement grants. The grants are made available through Chester County’s Preservation Partnership Program, which offers funding to municipalities and nonprofit land preservation organizations. These county funds are anticipated to attract an additional $7 million of non-county funds, meaning more than $10 million in total investment. A total of 20 grants are included this year, ranging from $11,000 to the Open Lands Conservancy of Chester County to help facilitate creation of a publicly accessible nature trail in Charlestown to $640,000 for a conservation easement on the 126-acre Camp Innabah property in East Vincent Township, protecting environmental resources and providing a future segment of the French Creek Trail. East Coventry Township will receive $203,609 for the first phase of planned improvements to Towpath Park on Route 724, including the construction of a new 85-space stone-surface parking lot serving the park and the Schuylkill River Trail. This project includes ADA improvements, installation of native landscape plantings, and lighting. East Goshen Township will receive $60,063 for improvements at its Township Park on Paoli Pike, including the installation of six permanent pickleball courts and one permanent tennis court also lined for two pickleball courts. Elk Township will receive $327,172 for the acquisition of the 162-acre Martin Six Associates property - directly across from the Springlawn Trail trailhead - to be transferred to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to become an addition to the Big Elk Creek section of the White Clay Creek Preserve. As part of the state park, the property will be open to the public for low-impact recreation, with the aim of protecting the property’s extensive natural resources.TheKennett Area Park Authority will receive $16,317 for the Ash Grove reforestation project, which will include replanting of 125 native trees to replace trees that have been attacked by the emerald ashLondonborer. Grove Township will receive $12,629 to construct several trail connections to the Inniscrone Golf Club trail system. West Grove Borough will receive $100,000 to purchase a 3.4-acre property for an addition to the borough’s 8.9-acre Harmony Park. The latter scholarship is named in memory of Wilde, a fourth-generation funeral director at Wilde Funeral Home who was active at the Keystone Valley Fire Department, where he once served as fire chief. In May, Lions members participated in the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial celebration by hiding rocks that were painted with lions. “Lions rocks were hidden around town (and) they could be redeemed at our table for a chocolate bar,” explained Lion Robin McKenna, who is also the scholarship committee chairperson. The club also had a float in the parade, which included club members and students from the newly formed Leo Club at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. Ongoing Lions Club projects include the collection of used or unwanted eyeglasses, which are later refurbished into new eyewear for people in need. Collection containers are located at the Parkesburg Library, 105 West St. and at local eye doctors’ offices. The Lions also collect plastics at the library and at Fulton Bank, 100 W. First Ave., Parkesburg, and Pine Creek Animal Hospital, 150 Pine Creek Drive, Gap. “The plastics have enabled us to participate in a program through TREX, where free benches for our town are being earned,” said McKenna. One of the benches, located near the bus stop of the library, was dedicated to Lion Jim Norton. “He was a longtime Lion and a member of the Parkesburg Library Board,” said McKenna. The ceremony was attended by Norton’s family, Lions Club members and Parkesburg Mayor John Hagen, who offered remarks. A second bench was placed on the playground of the Octorara Elementary School (OES) to serve as a “buddy bench.” “This concept was inspired by Shauna McAllister’s third-grade class,” said McKenna. “The bench will be there for any student to sit on indicating they could use a buddy without having to say a word.” The bench was dedicated during a third-grade assembly at OES on the last day of school. The club also collects food at Dutch-Way Farm Market several times per year to benefit the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, sponsors the Halloween parade, conducts the borough’s Holiday Decorating Contest, organizes the Adopt a Soldier Project during the holidays and donates to a variety of local organizations and individuals each year.

This year marks the return of the preschool program at Limeville UMC. “They had a preschool many years ago for about 30 years, and it did very well,” said LCP director Mandee Culp. “That ended about 20 years ago, and we are starting it back up. Obviously, a lot has changed in 20 years.”

The Friends’ yard sale and chicken barbecue will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, “Christiana sidewalk sales are held throughout the town that day. The Friends will also have a yard sale inside the library and outside,” said Joan Esworthy, Friends president, noting that a variety of yard sale items have been donated by the community. The yard sale at the library will begin at 8 a.m.; chicken halves prepared on-site by Randy Yoder will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The Friends’ Read Moore Book Store, which is located downstairs at the library, will be open during the yard sale. In addition to helping maintain free use of computers and free internet access for library patrons, proceeds will help provide prizes for the Summer Reading Program and support weekly story times during the school year, as well as the library’s local history collection and book club. The students will meet in the church’s fellowship hall and enjoy outdoor activities on the church grounds. “We will (include) Christian concepts such as prayer and Bible stories and have a really strong focus on (teaching the children about) being kind and being a good friend,” said Culp. “We believe that children learn best through play, so we embed learning goals right into their daily play. We are hoping to raise funds for a playground. (In the meantime), we have lots of toys to take outside.”

The newly opened preschool will focus on the academic, social, emotional and spiritual needs of preschoolers as they prepare to enter kindergarten. “When it met back then, it was a playgroup, like a Mom’s Day Out,” Culp explained. “They would do a story and some play time and then go home. (Now), we have a really strong academic and social focus at the preschool so it’s a little more engaging and it meets state standards.”
