Local Scout earns Eagle Award
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Noah Zink, a member of Boy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen, recently earned the Eagle Scout Award, the highest honor in Scouting. His Eagle Court of Honor ceremony took place on July 23 at The Parkesburg POINT, where Noah completed his required Eagle Scout Service Project - the construction of two cornhole sets, which were painted with The POINT logos, and an adult-size hook and ring game that was installed on the property.

exhibitions and a display of projects highlighted the Chester County 4-H Fair , held from Aug. 7 to 12 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook.
During the animal shows, 4-H members were given an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the handling of beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, horses, pigs and sheep.
A Dairy Cattle Show, held on Aug. 11, was judged by Christine Williams. “She is looking at characteristics such as structure and how well the (cow) stands and walks,” explained Extension education Toni Stuetz. “These cows are junior animals,so they have never given birth. Senior animals are bovines that have given birth.”
“There are six different breeds of
cows represented here,” Stuetz added. “They show by their breed.” While many people think of dairy cows with black and white or red and white coloring, some dairy cows can be one solid color.
“We have 509 4-H club members in Chester County, and we reach another 2,000 (children and youths) through various outreach programs.”
“Most people think of them with specks, but (some) are very dark animals,” Stuetz noted. “For the kids, it is easier for them to keep (the solid-colored cows) clean than those with a lot of white.”
Williams also provided feedback to the competitors. “The kids are
told to watch the judge and listen to what the judge says,” Stuetz pointed out. “The judge told one of the girls that her cow’s hoofs should have been trimmed sooner. It helps it walk better and look better and be healthier.”
In the project display area, visitors could view items completed by 4-H members from throughout Chester County such as quilts, woodworking, arts and crafts, clothing and more.
“There are 286 projects, which is (an increase of) about 40 or 50 from last year,” said Stuetz, noting that some of the woodworking projects were displayed in the center’s hallway because of their size. “It’s a good turnout for the kids. We have some new clubs, and we encouraged them to come (to the fair).”
She noted that 4-H clubs have been added through the years in areas such as robotics and STEM, computer coding and veterinary
Noah was already familiar with The POINT because he and his family used to live in the area. In addition to completing his project there, he volunteered at the youth center for eight hours in order to earn his Citizenship in the Community merit badge, which is one of the required merit badges that Eagle Scout candidates must earn. While there, he met Bud Herman, The POINT’s director of operations, who suggested the Eagle project, which had to be approved by the troop committee and the Chester
County Boy Scout Council. “An Eagle Project must benefit the community in some way and give the Scout an opportunity to demonstrate his leadership skills,” Noah explained.

“Dog Days of Summer” will be the theme of Final Friday, to be held in downtown Parkesburg on Aug. 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. During the monthly street fair, presented by the Parkesburg Action Committee (PAC), local pet rescues will be on hand accepting donations and showcasing adoptable pets. The event will also include vendors, live music and displays by community groups.
Final Friday events take place in the 200 block of Main Street, where
all the stores will be open for shoppers. On Aug. 25, live music will be provided by Blues Mojo, and food will be available from two food trucks - Smokin’ Butler Brisket and BBQ and Mobile Mess Hall.
One organization that will be represented at the event is Chester County-based LaMancha Animal Rescue, a nonprofit no-kill animal shelter. Dogs at the shelter, which are waiting for their forever homes, are given daily exercise by volunteers, so the pets can enjoy fresh air and companionship.

the project. “I reached out to businesses in the Parkesburg area,” he said. “Wilde Funeral Home gave us a donation up front for the project, which almost paid for all of our needs.”
Walter & Jackson Inc. in Christiana provided the lumber, and family, friends and community members provided the remaining donations of supplies, including nails, metal hooks and the cornhole bean bags.
The work was completed over several weekends. “Volunteers from my family, my friends from school and Boy Scout troop members came out to The POINT,” Noah said. “I led them through assembling the cornhole boards and putting together the hook and ring game, (which included) painting and assembling it.”
Herman and Dwayne Walton, The POINT’s executive director, stopped by during the process to show their
support and they allowed him to have his Court of Honor ceremony on-site as a way to express their appreciation. Noah was also able to present leftover funds from the project to The POINT.
During Noah’s Scouting tenure, he was part of Pack 59 of Gap, Pack 28 of Paradise, Troop 28 of Paradise and Troop 20 of Atglen.
Noah participated in a high adventure trip to Algonquin Provincial Park in Canada with Troop 20, as well as summer camps at several Boy Scouts of America camps in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He was awarded the Mitch King Scouting Award for his leadership and Scout qualities.
Noah held many positions within the troop, including senior patrol leader, troop guide, den chief, outdoor ethics guide, patrol leader, quartermaster and instructor. Noah earned 48 merit

badges, including 15 Eagle required merit badges. He was also elected to the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s honor society.
During the Court of Honor, the mayor of Atglen, Darren Hodorovich, spoke and presented Noah with a commen-
dation from the Borough of Atglen for his achievement.
Noah, a 2023 graduate of Pequea Valley High School, will attend Millersville University this fall to study biology in the pre-optometry program with the goal of becoming an eye doctor.

Nominations sought for award
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is accepting nominations for the annual Mira Lloyd Dock Partnership Diversity Award, given in recognition of conservation work in environmental justice communities in Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Environmental Protection considers any census block group where 20% or more individuals live in poverty or 30% or more of the population identifies as a
minority to be in an environmental justice area.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, welcomes nominations of anyone in Pennsylvania who has shown exemplary leadership in his or her community through environmental restoration, awareness, education or conservation work. This work includes community tree plantings, rain garden or
native pollinator garden installation or plantings, regenerative agriculture or urban farming or permaculture, or community beautification in an environmental justice community.
Nominees are ranked on their community engagement, collaboration and environmental conservation work with environmental justice communities in support of planting 10 million trees in Pennsylvania. Nominees are
given credit for using science, research, innovative and creative approaches to conservation. A volunteer committee of environmental leaders, past Dock Award winners, and others will determine the winners.
To submit a nomination, visit https://tenmilliontrees.org/ contact/mld/. Forms are also available by emailing keystone trees@cbf.org or calling 717200-4543. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Sept. 29.
The award winners will receive $5,000 worth of native trees and supplies from the partnership, to be used for a 2024 tree project.
Now in its fourth year, the award was created to honor the spirit of Mira Lloyd Dock, who pursued urban beautification and forest conservation at a time when women and people of color were not welcomed at the decisionmaking table.
Dock is recognized as the first Pennsylvania woman to lead the way in forest conser-
vation. She was an advocate for Penn’s Woods and in 1901 was appointed to the State Forestry Reservation Commission by Pennsylvania Gov. William Stone.
The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership will present the award during the Pennsylvania Forestry Association’s annual symposium on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Toftrees Golf Resort in State College.

For the first time, the Chester County 4-H Teen Council held a Field Day event on Aug. 13. “Our Teen Council is trying to spread the word about 4-H and get the kids to come together to have a social day after all the hard work,” Stuetz noted.
During the event, attendees made more than 20 dog toys to donate to the Brandywine Valley SPCA in addition to playing field games.

Fundraisers to benefit Christiana library
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Providing free passes to area museums, helping maintain free use of computers and internet access for patrons, and supporting an aerobic drumming class, a knitting group and story times are just some of the programs that will benefit from upcoming fundraisers being presented by the Friends of the Moores Memorial Library and the library board. Events will include a golf tournament as well as a yard sale and chicken barbecue.
The 14th annual library golf tournament is set for Monday, Aug. 28, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. A light lunch will be provided at noon, and there will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner, provided by Wayne Buckwalter Jr., will be served at the conclusion of the tournament. The single-player fee includes green fees, use of a cart, lunch, dinner and oncourse beverages.
Preregistration is encouraged; registration forms are available at the library. Golfers may also register by calling 717-951-8713.
Walk-in registrations will be accepted on the day of the event, space permitting. Golfers may sign up with friends as a group of four or enter as an individual and be placed with a team.
There will be a number of contests and prizes throughout the day, including closestto-the-pin, longest drive for men and for ladies and a putting contest. Prizes will be awarded to first- and secondplace teams, and there will be
a cash prize for a hole in one, compliments of Hershey Motors. There will also be door prizes, including gift cards from local businesses.
This tournament is designed for amateur golfers, and no prizes will be awarded to professionals.
“Last year, we had more than 50 golfers,” noted Joan Esworthy, Friends president. In addition to the programs already mentioned, a portion of the proceeds from the tournament will be used to replace the library’s sign. “This will be a big (ticket) item,” said Esworthy. “The (current) sign was not meant to be outside in the elements.”
The Friends will hold a yard sale and chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 26. The yard sale at the library will begin at 8 a.m.; chicken halves prepared on-site by Randy Yoder will be available beginning at 10 a.m. The Friends’ Read
Moore Book Store, which is located downstairs at the library, will be open during the yard sale.
“Yard sales will be held throughout Christiana that day,” said Esworthy, noting that a variety of yard sale items have been donated by Friends members such as seasonal decor and kitchenware.
“If people want to bring items for us to donate to sell, they may drop them off at the library (during operating hours),” added Friends member Karen Woods, noting that all items must be clean and in good condition. No clothing or appliances will be accepted.
Moores Memorial Library is located at 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana. Hours of operation are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 to 7 p.m.; and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to noon. For more information, contact the

According to the authors of “Because of Jesus I Am …” the idea for the 20-day devotional came from a group conversation centered on today’s major social issues. The journey of the devotional into the realm of identity is the group’s way of reaching out and providing a resource to those who are struggling.
“Because of Jesus I Am …” is slated to be in print and available online starting in September. To find the online version, readers may search for “Because of Jesus I Am …” at www.youversion.com. Those who prefer a printed version may pick one up at after Sunday, Oct. 1, The Factory at 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Printed copies will also be available at the churches whose ministers participated in writing the booklet.
This is the third time the group of pastors and others involved in ministries in the greater Pequea Valley area have completed a devotional. The group, which meets the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., first “gathered,” in a virtual format, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the

restrictions it brought about. The first booklet focused on trusting God during the pandemic, and the second one delved into the meanings behind Christmas carols.
Brandon Fisher, lead pastor of Keystone Church, Paradise, who recently became the group’s moderator, explained that the pastors who wrote the devotional chose to work with specific verses. “Each verse includes (the words) ‘In Christ’ or ‘In Jesus,’” he explained. “(The verses) highlight how our union with Christ changes our identity.” He went on to note that the emphasis of the devotional is that identity is not based on who the world
or family members say someone is but on what Christ says.
Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the experience of writing the individual devotionals was enjoyable. “I know the truth of what it means to be in Christ, but to take the time with my passage, which was Romans 8:1, the truth of who I am in Jesus Christ washed over me afresh and anew,” he said. “Just soaking in that passage for a little while did my own heart some good.”
Dave Smucker, executive director for Alliance Network, pointed out that working on the project as part of a team was important. “All we had to do is bring our part and let the pieces lock together,” he said.
Fisher said that the reflec-
tive endeavor has enhance the perspectives of group members. “One of the driving reasons for us to write it is that it fit in with why we meet as a group,” he said. “There are a lot of local churches in the area, and it might be easy to see (our differences, but) there’s far more we have in common with each other mainly because of who we are in Christ, and I think this devotional captures (that).”
Individuals who served as devotional authors, in addition to Feather, Fisher, and Smucker, included Mike Bailey, Joe Lab, Kate Lab, Chris Lenhart, Tim Rogers, Mike Clemmer, Joel Wood, Jonathan Damon, Ellie Brooke, Greg Petersheim, Kelly Metzler, Clint Shondelmyer, Kyle Kauffman, and Adam Nagle.
information table on Aug. 25 will be able to learn about the rescue, including volunteer opportunities.
“Volunteers are always needed to help walk the dogs. People can come occasionally or in shifts. I volunteer on Fridays in the Puppy Palace,” said La Mancha volunteer Brittany Macey, who also fosters dogs that are waiting to be adopted.
“Walkers come for the morning shift between 8 a.m. to 12 noon and the evening shift from 4 to 6 p.m. We are short on quite a few shifts.”
Visitors may also bring donations for the rescue.
“We can always use dog food, peanut butter, towels, dog treats and toys,” she said. The rescue will also
accepted 100% pure canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix), which helps the canines with stomach ailments.
Also on hand at the Final Friday event with adoptable dogs will be representatives from To Love a Canine (TLC), a Chester Countybased nonprofit, all-breed, no-kill rescue, with a mission of rescuing and finding permanent homes for abandoned, stray and surrendered dogs. TLC pets live in the homes of volunteer foster families prior to being adopted.
The rescue is always in need of local residents willing to foster a dog until the pet finds a forever family, as well as volunteers to help with transporting and taxiing dogs to veterinary appointments. For more information, visit www.tlcrescuepa.com or www.facebook.com/TL CrescuePAinc. TLC will also accept donations at the event.
In addition to the Final Friday program, PAC presents the Parkesburg Farmers Market on the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon at Parkesburg Borough Hall, 315 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. Upcoming dates will be Sept. 9 and Oct. 14.

Gawthrop Greenwood announces merger
The law firm Gawthrop Greenwood announced a merger with community association law firm Steven L. Sugarman & Associates on Aug. 1, forming one of the largest law firms supporting homeowners associations (HOAs), planned communities, condominium associations and cooperatives across Pennsylvania in the residential and commercial arenas.
Community association lawyer Steven L. Sugarman will lead Gawthrop Greenwood’s community association law practice joined by attorneys Elliot H. Berton and Robert M. Mulhern Jr., also of Steven L. Sugarman & Associates.
The announcement came seven months after Gawthrop Greenwood announced a merger with the community
association law firm Landis & Setzler and attorneys Holly L. Setzler and James D. Doyle. The merger with Gawthrop Greenwood’s Community Association Law Department, together with Gawthrop Greenwood’s dozens of attorneys from multiple disciplines, provides the comprehensive suite of legal services required to support the intensifying needs of commu-
nity association board members, builder-developers, buyers, sellers, realtors and municipalities who are grappling with increased accountability to state and federal regulations, as well as homeowners seeking to raise their property values.
A community association law attorney for more than 40 years, Sugarman has played a role in establishing statutory and decisional law governing Pennsylvania’s common interest communities. As the chair and an active member of the Community Association Institute (CAI) Legislative Action Committee for many years, Sugarman drafted and advocated for key amendments to Pennsylvania’s statutes as community associations became more prevalent.

The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) is accepting applications for its fourth class of cadets which will begin in January 2024.
The KSCA is designed to give academically challenged teens a second chance at obtaining their basic education, and learning leadership, self-discipline and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a better life.
The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap (FTIG) in Lebanon County in July 2022 formally established the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania.
The program is open to 16to 18-year-old Pennsylvania residents who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, to be free of felony convictions and to voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at FTIG followed by one year of mentorship back in their home communities.
For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov/Keystone StateChallengeAcademy and choose the Eligibility and Admissions page. To have an application mailed or to talk with someone about the pro-
gram, contact the academy at RA-MVPACHALLENGE @pa.gov, 717-861-7767 or 717861-8831.
The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).
Cadets are introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core compo-
nents: academic excellence; physical fitness; leadership/followership; responsible citizenship; job skills; service to the community; health and hygiene; and life coping skills. Graduates often receive high school credits, credentials or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms and school supplies are provided at no charge.
Since the ChalleNGe pro-
gram’s inception in 1993, more than 200,000 young people have completed the program nationwide. The program has been recognized with awards.
The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 39 Youth ChalleNGe sites in 30 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded.

children. There will be no charge to attend the festival, but attendees will need to purchase tickets to partake in the games and activities.
At 5 p.m., more than 10,000 rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-to-schoolthemed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/ events/duckies.
Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment. “We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”
Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its ongoing expansion project, which will entail moving its operation to a larger facility on its current premises. The new building will allow more space for treatments such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as increase Schreiber’s availability to see patients on its waiting list. The organization expects to fully relocate to the new facility in the fall.
For more information or to become a volunteer for the festival, visit the aforementioned website or email Masengarb at kmasengarb@schreiber pediatric.org.
