Southern Chester County Medical Facility Seeks Volunteers BY FRANCINE FULTON
The front window of the Righteous Clothing Thrift Store has new shelving where merchandise is displayed.
Righteous Clothing Thrift Store Redesigned BY FRANCINE FULTON
he Righteous Clothing Thrift Store, 317 Main St., Parkesburg, has a new look. Volunteers have been busy for the past several weeks rearranging merchandise; adding numerous display cases, including new shelving in the front window; and placing clothing on hangers that was previously stored in bins. There is also a new blue banner out front and new lettering on the front door. Jody Bush, chairperson, said the goal of the store’s rebranding is to maximize the use of space and make shopping even easier for customers. “We are getting things out of bins and up and hanging so people can see it,” she noted. One of the biggest changes is the store’s front window, which now houses a variety of sale merchandise. “We used to keep jeans in

It is amazing to me what they (donate).” Proceeds from the store, which opened in 2009, are given to the church and local charities such as the Octorara Area Food Cupboard, the Parkesburg POINT Youth Center and Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach (PCCO). Volunteers are always needed to help sort and price items and to run the cash register. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and they do not have to be members of the church. The shop is also in need of donations. Donations of in-season items are accepted during the shop’s operating hours or by appointment. New and gently used footwear of all varieties, including boots, sandals, flipflops, heels and sneakers, is being collected as part of a fundraiser to help local Girl Scout troops that are planning a trip to England to take part in the 2022 International Scout Jamboree in West Sussex, England. From now through Wednesday, Sept. 15, shoe donations can be dropped off various locations in the Oxford and Quarryville areas. “The shoes can be in gently used condition, but the soles cannot be falling off,” explained Nancy Rowe, who is troop co-leader for Girl Scout Troops 71227 and 71244 along with Jayne Zook. Both troops meet at Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood.

Volunteers “Our volunteers work with outpatient radiology and outpatient laboratory services,” Ennis-Pierson explained. “The walk-in patients are coming in for appointments for diagnostic tests. (Volunteers) help them check in for their appointments. There are a lot of folks coming in the first time, and they definitely have a lot of questions, so volunteers offer some directional support.” Interested candidates must complete the volunteer application process, which includes a personal interview, criminal background check and TB screen. Volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to being selected and assigned. Bilingual volunteers are welcome. The current volunteer position at Penn Medicine Southern Chester County is in the morning, making it ideal for a person who is retired. “I had two college students (who went back to school), so there are three openings in the morning,” Ennis-Pierson noted. “It’s a really nice position to help in health care in the community.” Ennis-Pierson said that more than 400 volunteers are registered to provide assistance throughout the Penn Medicine community, which includes Penn Medicine Southern Chester County, 455 Woodview Road, West Grove; the Chester County Hospital and the Abramson Cancer Center, 701 E. Marshall St., West Chester; and the Fern Hill Medical Campus, 915 Old Fern Hill Road, West Chester. “On any given day I have 40-plus volunteers across the hospital, the satellite locations and the cancer center,” she noted. “We have over 23 volunteers in the emergency department (at Chester County Hospital). They will make beds, prepare a room when an ambulance is coming or supply blanket warmers. They may take a blanket or pillow to a patient. They get a good immersion in the emergency department.” There is also a VolunTEEN program where boys and girls ages 14 to 18 volunteer at the hospital on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The teens perform a variety of tasks, such as making beds, running errands and completing paperwork. “We do a (patient satisfaction) survey, and our volunteers score very high. They are super dedicated and very proud of their position,” said Ennis-Pierson. “They are amazing folks.” To learn more about volunteering at Penn Medicine Southern Chester County or other locations, call Ennis-Pierson at 610-431-5191 or email april.ennis-pierson@ pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

Scout group there three years ago. It’s a great opportunity to meets kids from around the world,” said Rowe. “The girls learned that no matter where you are from, people are the same and want the same kinds of things. It gives them an opportunity to see that the world is not as big as they think. We are all interconnected somehow.” While attending the Jamboree, the girls will camp out in tents, provided by their sister troop in England. “They make sure that while we are in camp that we have everything that we need,” said Rowe. She shared that a special
camaraderie developed between the girls from Pennsylvania and the troop from England during the previous visit. “No one knew each other when we got there, but when we left, they walked the kids to our shuttle and there were tears - (after only) one week,” Rowe said, noting that some of the girls still keep in touch with their new friends. how well the 4-H member shows with their animal showing the animal’s best qualities,” explained Toni Stuetz, 4-H extension educator. “Fitting is how well they prepare the animals for the show. Are the animals (wellgroomed) and washed? Are their ears clean? There is a lot that goes into it.” Sollenberger provided feedback to each youth in the competition. For example, he complimented one competitor because her animal’s hooves were well polished. Stuetz noted that some of the 4-H members in the competition live on dairy farms, but those who do not may visit an active dairy farm instead. “Some kids are lease members, meaning they go to a dairy farm and use someone else’s calves.

After being held virtually in 2020, the Chester County 4-H Fair, which provides an opportunity for 4-H members to showcase their projects and skills with farm animals, returned to an in-person event this year. During the fair, held from Aug. 9 to 14 at the Romano 4-H Center in Honey Brook, 4-H members from throughout Chester County displayed the many projects they completed throughout the year. Visitors were able to view the exhibits, which included displays of quilts, woodworking, arts and crafts, clothing and textiles, photography and more. The event also featured animal shows, where the 4-H members were able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in the handling and husbandry of farm animals, including beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, horses, pigs and sheep. A Dairy Cattle Show, held on Aug. 13, was judged by Owen J. Roberts High School graduate Kyle Sollenberger, who competed at the 4-H Show for years while growing up on his family’s dairy farm. He is now an animal science instructor at Technical College High School Brandywine Campus. The competition had two categories - Showmanship and Fitting. “Showmanship is

patients in Berks and Chester counties by providing funds that pay their bills like rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, taxes and child care. Since its formation, ORT has given out more than 450 grants. Murphy, a Coatesville resident, founded the ministry after losing his wife, Beth, to breast cancer in 2009. The name of the organization refers to the 5K runs that are held by ORT throughout the year, along with other fundraisers. The charity’s motto is “OneRunTogether - so no one fights cancer alone.” Because of the pandemic,
Murphy said that there will be no 10th anniversary celebration banquet. The annual banquet was canceled in 2020 as well. “Once we knew we would not have the dinner (in 2020), we had a fundraising event and sent out letters and emails to people and asked for donations,” said Murphy, noting that the last in-person banquet in 2019 raised more than $36,000 for the organization. “It was amazing that we ended up bringing in the same amount (in 2020) as the year before (when there was a banquet).”

nity Foundation recently announced the awarding of $59,000 in grants through the Wentworth Association Fund for Senior Housing, organized under the auspices of the foundation. After reviewing competitive grant applications, volunteer members of a communitybased grant panel awarded $59,000 to 10 nonprofits in the Chester County region. The Wentworth Association Fund for Senior Housing was organized after the dissolution of the Wentworth Association nonprofit organization and the sale of the former Wentworth Senior Home in West Chester. The former members of the board of directors said they felt that the assets of the organization could best be used to benefit a greater number of senior Chester County residents through the annual distribution of grants to nonprofits whose missions and programs provide services and benefits to seniors age 55 and older.

LWBA from pg 4 memorial fund in their son’s name shortly after his death. A total of 240 motorcycles departed Gap at 9 a.m. and returned to the same area at approximately noon. Huey 823 departed Lancaster Airport, flew directly to the site of Brandon’s grave at Calgary Monument Church in Paradise and slowly circled the cemetery three times. Huey 823 then flew the same route as the motorcycles to the landing zone where the ride would end, and the helicopter arrived just before the motorcycles. The motorcycle ride was a fundraiser for the Corporal Brandon M. Hardy Memorial Fund, which awards $1,000 to service members who have completed basic training. These funds can be used at the discretion of the new recruits for various purposes, including for transportation home while they are on leave. Anyone interested in supporting the fund may contact Jill at 610-416-3057. LWBA is nonprofit organization of veterans with the mission of educating the public on the crucial role played by the UH-1 series of helicopters in the Vietnam War. Huey 823 has flown numerous missions in support of veterans’ and patriotic events, including a visit to the Coatesville VA Medical Center. There are only about 10 fully restored Hueys in the US. Huey 823 looks now as it did when it flew combat missions for the 170th Helicopter Assault Company in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. It bears the repaired bullet holes as proof of service. Anyone interested in supporting the LWBA may contact Chuck Bechtel, the public affairs officer, at 717-7560643 or chuckbechtel@verizon.net.
