Heritage Days to celebrate Christiana history

TheChristiana Historical Society (CHS) will present Christiana Heritage Days on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 9 and 10. The event is designed to celebrate the history of Christiana, which has a motto of “Freedom Began Here,” and to highlight the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851. Activities will take place on the grounds of the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., Christiana. The building, which is currently undergoing renovations, was once owned by the Brinton family members, who were stationmasters on the Underground Railroad.

Events that will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 9 include historical displays, an appearance by Civil War re-enactors and

A chicken barbecue will be prepared on-site by Randy Yoder, with proceeds from sales to benefit CHS. Two food trucks - Mocha Motion Coffee and 22bbq - will also be on hand.

Historic wagon tours of the borough will be offered for a fee. Costumed tour guides will provide information about each

Heritage Days is also designed as way for area residents and visitors to learn about the Christiana Resistance, which occurred when a slave owner came from Maryland to retrieve a slave, whom he deemed to be his property. The black community took a stand and refused his demands. With the black residents receiving help from their Quaker neighbors, a confrontation ensued, which ended with the death of the slave owner. About 40 people - both black and Quaker - were arrested and held for trial on the charge of treason. A team of lawyers, led by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster, came to their defense and won.

“We meet people that know a little bit about the Resistance but not the whole story,” noted Patterson. “We will fill in a lot of

Group of pastors completes third devotional

According to the authors of “Because of Jesus I Am ...” the idea for the 20-day devotional came from a group conversation centered on today’s major social issues. The journey of the devotional into the realm of identity is the group’s way of reaching out and providing a resource to those who are struggling.

“Because of Jesus I Am ...” is slated to be in print and available online starting in September. To find the online version, readers may search for “Because of Jesus

I Am ...” at www.youversion.com. Those who prefer a printed version may pick one up at after Sunday, Oct. 1, The Factory at 3293 E. Lincoln Highway, Paradise. Printed copies will also be available at the churches whose ministers participated in writing the booklet.

This is the third time the group of pastors and others involved in ministries in the greater Pequea Valley area have completed a devotional. The group, which meets the second Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m., first “gathered,” in a See Devotional pg 2

of Keystone Church, Paradise, who recently became the group’s moderator, explained that the pastors who wrote the devotional chose to work with specific verses. “Each verse includes (the words) ‘In Christ’ or ‘In Jesus,’” he explained. “(The verses) highlight how our union with Christ changes our identity.” He went on to note that the emphasis of the devotional is that identity is not based on who the world or family members say someone is but on what Christ says.

Scott Feather, pastor of Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the experience of writing the individual devotionals was enjoyable. “I know the truth of what it means to be in Christ, but to take the time with my passage, which was Romans 8:1, the truth of who I am in Jesus Christ washed over me afresh and anew,” he said. “Just soaking in that passage for a little while

Dave Smucker, executive director for Alliance Network, pointed out that working on the project as part of a team was important. “All we had to do is bring our part and let the pieces lock together,” he said.

Fisher said that the reflective endeavor has enhance the perspectives of group members. “One of the driving reasons for us to write it is that it fit in with why we meet as a group,” he said. “There are a lot of local churches in the area, and it might be easy to

A group of pastors and others involved in Pequea Valleyarea ministries has written a devotional on identity.

A previous year’s Chester County Color 5K begins.

Chester County Color 5K to benefit COPE program

The seventh annual Chester County Color 5K run and walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Exton Park, 800 Swedesford Road, and along the Chester Valley Trail. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and the race will step off at 9 a.m.

Administered by the Chester County Community Foundation, the event raises funds to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic in the county. The John R. Gailey III and JoEllen Berger Charitable Fund has been the event’s presenting sponsor since 2019.

The Chester County Color 5K draws thousands of participants and supporters and has raised more than $200,000 since it began. All proceeds support Chester County’s Community Outreach Prevention and Education (COPE) program.

The COPE program was created in 2018 to steer overdose survivors being treated in any of Chester County’s hospital emergency rooms toward treatment. The COPE program is a “warm handoff” of an overdose survivor to treatment through the help of a certified recovery specialist. The specialist arrives within one hour of an overdose survivor’s arrival in the emergency room and provides the survivor with personal support and a connection to treatment. The specialist is also available to speak with the survivor’s loved ones.

Commissioner Michelle Kichline led the effort to establish the Chester County Color 5K in 2016 as part of her commitment to addressing the opioid and heroin crisis affecting many people in Chester County. Since then, she has seen the event grow into a fundraising effort that aims to help destigmatize substance use disorder and lead individuals to treatment and a path to recovery.

Registration for the Chester County Color 5K is open to teams and individuals at www.chesco.org/color5k. Preregistration is encouraged.

Sponsorships are available for the Color 5K. For more details, contact Rebecca Brain, Chester County public information officer, at rbrain@chesco.org.

Rescue and Recover

Milby Thorington. “We are a 100% volunteer-based nonprofit,” Thorington explained. “We raise resources for animal rescues to allow them to focus more on their animals and less on where necessities are coming from. It’s a very different type of organization.”

To help financially support local rescues, Rescue and Recover volunteers set up booths at local events, where they sell items such as T-shirts, dog toys and leash holders. Most recently, volunteers participated in the National Dog Day event on Aug 19 at Victory Brewing Company in Parkesburg.

“We fundraise year-round. We participate in many events as a vendor, and we sell a bunch of different dog toys and merchandise,” Thorington said. “One of our partners is Habitat for Humanity of Chester County. We take their scrap pieces of lumber, and we turn them into leash holders, which are plaques with hooks (attached).”

In May, Rescue and Recover hosted its first event, a

Rescue Rally held at East Fallowfield Township Park. The event featured displays by local animal rescue groups, a pet photo booth, a dog kissing booth and a “least obedient dog” competition. There were also vendors and food trucks. “We had three participating rescues - LaMancha, Lucky Dawg and Scallywags. They came with adoptable animals,” said Thorington, noting that proceeds from the fundraiser were divided between the rescues.

Next up for the group is the Canine Partners for Life (CPL) Fall Festival set for Saturday, Sept. 16, from noon to 4 p.m. at CPL, 334 Faggs Manor Road, Cochranville.

Thorington, who has a service dog named Loki, which he adopted from LaMancha, has a soft spot for animals, and he admires the work done by rescue organizations. “(I learned that one rescue) lost an animal that needed an expensive surgery because they could not raise the funds in time,” he stated. “That should never happen. These

animal rescues are at capacity almost 100% of the time, and a lot of times they are over capacity.”

A future goal of the organization is to focus on animals that are less likely to be adopted - seniors, bonded pairs and those with special needs. “We are trying to sponsor hard-to-adopt animals,” Thorington stated.

“Some rescues don’t permit you to sponsor adoption fees.

In that case, we will give a care package - a Chewy gift card or food to go home with (the new pet owners).”

“My big dream is to have an animal sanctuary someday geared toward those types of animals,” he added.

For more information about Rescue and Recover, including volunteer opportunities, visit www.rescue andrecover.org. Merchandise, including the leash holders, dog toys and more, is available on the website. More information about the organization can be found at www.facebook.com/Rescue AndRecoverr or by emailing RescueAndRecover@gmail.com.

Outdoor enthusiasts invited to join BVSA

The Brandywine Valley Ski Association (BVSA) is a nonprofit Chester County-based organization that organizes social activities for those who enjoy the outdoors. Activities include picnics, kayaking, bike rides, outdoor concerts, pool parties, Friday happy hours and ski trips.

“We have many members that are not skiers but enjoy the club for its activities and the opportunity to meet new friends,” said Harold Lamb, a member of the BVSA activities committee.

BVSA will hold a prospective new member informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at the Thorndale Inn, 430 Bondsville Road, Downingtown. “At the meeting, we will have an overview of the purpose of the club, which is really to provide fun, social opportunities for people who enjoy the outdoors,” said Lamb.

For the upcoming ski season, the club, which is affiliated with the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council (EPSC), is organizing trips to Switzerland and Aspen Snowmass and Breckenridge, Col. A weeklong bike and barge trip

along the Rhine River in the Netherlands is scheduled for the end of September.

“(At the meeting), we will have flyers of trips we are offering this year,” said Lamb.

“The bike and barge trip is already sold out, but the other trips have open slots.” The meeting will also include a display of photos of past outings and trips.

BVSA members are asked to pay an annual fee, with separate prices for couples, families and individuals. In addition to a monthly newsletter that lists club activities, members receive reciprocal membership to the EPSC and the National Ski Council.

The club is open to adults of all ages. “(Most members)

are from throughout Chester County,” Lamb said, noting that other members hail from neighboring Lancaster, Montgomery and Delaware counties.

The club, which was established in 1975, currently has 300 registered members. BVSA meets on the first Wednesday of each month from September through May at the Thorndale Inn. Guests are welcome.

“We would like to see new members. We are looking to grow,” Lamb said. “The more people we have, the more trips and activities we can offer.”

For more information about the club, visit www .bvsa.wildapricot.org.

Hymns and history

Dianne Yuninger, organist and choir director with Leacock Presbyterian Church, enjoys sharing the history of Old Leacock Presbyterian Church, located on Route 340 at the corner of Old Leacock Road, between Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse. “Old Leacock was built in 1754,” noted Yuninger, referring to the stone building that preceded the current church, which is located at 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. “In 1740, a log structure (was built on the Old Leacock site).”

held at Old Leacock on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. Hymn sings are held at the historic church the first Sunday of each month during June, July, August, and September.

Old Leacock Day will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Old Leacock. “We have a 9:30 a.m. service, and then we have hot dogs and a covered dish picnic and games (outside),” said Yuninger. “Anyone can come to that.” Additional upcoming services at the site will include a Thanksgiving eve service on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. “We have folks who come to that from Ephrata and North East, Md.,” said Yuninger. “It’s a small, but vigorous crowd.” A Christmas Eve service will be held at the church at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24. “It’s a candlelight service with lessons and carols,” shared Yuninger, who noted that an Easter dawn service is held at 6:30 a.m. on Easter, which in 2024 will be Sunday, March 31.

Yuninger will share her musical talents, playing both the keyboard and the 1904 Estes pump organ during the final summer hymn sing to be the Morning.”

Chorister Don Brackbill will oversee the final hymn sing.

Yuninger noted that common songs that are requested at the hymn sings include “How Great Thou Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “It Is Well With My Soul,” and “I Danced in

The church is heated, but it is not air-conditioned, and there are no indoor restrooms. A portable restroom is available outside during summer activities.

Yuninger likes to tell the story of how the church was founded on the property. “The Scots-Irish who settled here determined that they were going to have a church here, but the presbytery and the synod said, ‘No, you have to go 10 miles to Pequea (Church),’” explained Yuninger. The presbytery is the governing body above the local church, and the synod is the regional governing body over he presbytery. “(The settlers) decided to stay here and petitioned the presbytery twice and were denied twice,” Yuninger continued, noting that finally the synod tabled the issue, and the church members continued to meet at the spot until 1740, when they finally received approval and built the log structure. “It just shows the backbone of these people,” shared Yuninger, who added that when it came time to build a larger and more permanent building, a church member was sent to Ireland for stone. He returned with about a dozen stone masons to build the church. Yuninger added that people who took part in the Revolutionary War are buried in the church cemetery. “There’s so much history here, and I think that’s important,” she stated.

Bringing pickleball to the park

“There were a lot of local residents who were excited about adding pickleball courts to the park,” said Leacock Township board member Mike Sensenig. Township board members responded to requests for pickleball facilities by building two courts in the Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville. The courts were officially opened for demonstrations and play during Heritage Days, which were held June 16 and 17. “We ended up using funds from Heritage Days to pay for it,” noted Sensenig. “The funds from (that event) are primarily used for the park.” A pickleball tournament is being considered as a planned activity during the 2024 Heritage Days.

Construction started in the winter of 2023 with Leacock Township employees prepar-

ing the site, which is adjacent to the Old Philadelphia Pike park entrance. “The excavation and putting the stones in (was completed),” said Sensenig. “Then a contractor came in to do the painting and build the fence.”

“We did all the groundwork and got it leveled,” said Frank Howe, secretary and treasurer for Leacock Township, “but to get a perfectly level court so there are no puddles when it rains, we got professionals to take care of that.” Howe noted that Lancaster Asphalt Systems, Inc., the company that completed the work, builds pickleball courts internationally.

Pickleball is a sport that combines tennis, badminton, and pingpong. It can be played inside or outside on a court the same size as a badminton court with a modified tennis net. Equipment includes a paddle and a plastic ball with

Stair climb will honor fallen first responders

Lancaster County’s annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. Participants will be required to pay a set cost to sign up, and registration will also be available online at www.lancasterstairclimb.org until Friday, Sept. 15.

Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the stadium. They will circle

the stadium five times, making the distance of the climb equivalent to the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.

During the climb, each partici-

holes in it. Played by singles or doubles, the sport is known for appealing to people of all ages and skill levels. The sport was invented in the 1960s by Joel Pritchard, a Congressman from Washington state, and Bill Bell, a businessman, who improvised and started playing with pingpong paddles and a perforated plastic ball.

The courts have a few rules, including requiring proper footwear and taking turns. Players are limited to finishing their current game if someone is waiting. “There’s hardly been a day I haven’t seen someone playing. It has been received very well,” said Sensenig, who noted that pickleball games progress more quickly than tennis. Courts are open from dawn to dusk.

Juanita Petersheim said she plays at the courts each Thursday with friends. She noted that she would love to

see more courts in the area.

In addition to the new courts, the playground at Community Park was refurbished in 2022. Changes included new playground equipment and foundation. “We put in a soft, rubber (surface),” said Sensenig. “We removed the mulch that was dirty and hard to maintain.” Similar upgrades were made to Civic Park, located behind the Intercourse Fire Company, 10 N. Hollander Road, Gordonville, in 2023. “The playground there has new equipment and a new surface,” said Sensenig, who noted that the area is often utilized by families attending softball games on the field in that park. Howe said that changes at both playgrounds were covered by Recovery Act funds.

Stair climb frompg 7

Every year, many first responders travel to the Barnstormers’ stadium to participate in the event. Firefighters often choose to don their full set of equipment for the climb, carrying the same type of heavy gear that their fallen comrades did as they rescued those trapped in the twin towers. In the past, the event has drawn first responders from across the entire county, as well as firefighters and emergency personnel from New York, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey.

“We have guys from outside of the state who only see each other at the stair climb every year. It’s a common bond for people,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company. “They swap stories and catch up. Firefighters already have a bond with each other, but the memorial makes that stronger.”

Similar memorial events are held throughout the country in almost every state, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the Lancaster event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters

Foundation, which distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who helped with rescue efforts continue to receive counseling over two decades after the attacks.

Yuill helped to establish the annual stair climb in Lancaster 13 years ago as a way to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Pucca. Yuill and Pucca met at a training program in New York, and Pucca was one of the city’s fire marshals who was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. Members of the community, especially first responders, immediately rallied in support of the memorial.

“The memorial gives people a unique way to show that they haven’t forgotten, like everyone promised in the days after 9/11,” Yuill said. “Even the younger generations participate, despite being babies when it happened. They know that it’s about honor and sacrifice, and they honor that.”

“For the Girl” scheduled in New Holland

Last spring, Megan Feveryear helped bring the “Clothed in Dignity” conference for women to the New Holland Church of the Nazarene. Now, Feveryear and a couple of well-known female musicians are planning a second conference, dubbed “For the Girl,” at the church, and Feveryear is brimming with excitement about the event. “We will try to wake up all these women super early and kick-start it with a time of worship with Cami Shrock,” said Feveryear, who noted that Shrock is originally from New Holland, but later moved to Indianapolis and is now a CCM recording artist.

For the Girl, which is open to women of all ages, will be held at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, on Saturday, Oct. 14, from

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. There is a cost to attend the conference for all registered participants, with an added fee for an optional lunch.

According to Feveryear, worship with Shrock will be followed by Feveryear’s own presentation to the gathering. “I will bring a message that I hope will impact some people,” she shared, adding that the morning will conclude with games that are suitable for people of all ages and are meant to get people up and moving around and talking with other attendees.

Following lunch, Ashton Brooke Gill, an “American Idol” alumna, will lead music. “We will have breakout sessions,” continued Feveryear. “We will speak on a number of topics, including identity, your calling,

your purpose, and life in general.” The afternoon session will conclude with more worship and a full-audience question-and-answer session. “We have everything timed out for a full day,” said Feveryear.

Feveryear, who is originally from New Holland, but now lives in Nashville, said that the previous conference in New Holland went so well that not only is this one planned, but also more events will be held in other areas. “Last year, it was just at New Holland, and they graciously offered to host again,” explained Feveryear, “but God opened doors to other places.” Those other places will include Christ Church, a large nondenominational church in Nashville, as well as another venue in LaGrange, Ky. “We are a little nervous, (but) we are excited to see what God has opened up and what He’s doing,” said Feveryear.

Women who wish to take part in the conference may register ahead of time by searching for “For the Girl Conference” at www.event brite.com. Individuals may also register at the church on the day of the event. More information about the conference may be found by searching for “For the Girl Conference” on Facebook.
