It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in,” said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in.” See Blog pg 8

The virtual banquet on Sept. 14 will start at 7 p.m. The event will include appearances from actor Kirk Cameron, author and speaker Naomi Zacharias and speaker Sean O’Hare. To register for the free event, readers may visit www.givebutter.com/CCWS2020 Banquet. CCWS executive director Myriam Ruager said that the goal of the event is to raise $185,000, which represents more than onequarter of the agency’s annual budget. “The funds raised help those in our community who are facing unplanned pregnancies get the medical, educational, emotional and spiritual support that they need,” said Ruager. Because the event is virtual, there is no limit to the number of participants and no geographical limitations. “We are excited that this event has no borders,” said Ruager. “You can listen in from anywhere in the world. Just imagine how far our reach could go if (people) were to share this event within (their) social circles.”

Thrift Store from pg 1 Volunteers encourage community members to stop by to shop for quality items offered at reasonable prices. “We have clothing for infants up to adults, (including) plus sizes,” said Jody Bush, chairperson. In order to make room for fall and winter clothing, the shop is currently offering a “buy one, get two free” clothing special through Saturday, Sept. 12. Bush operates the store along with 12 other volunteers. One of the volunteers is Heather Winward, who previously managed the store for 20 years. “I took over for her a year ago,” said Bush. Bush share that people have been very generous with their donations, noting that higherend items are often available to shoppers. “People are giving us their collectibles,” she noted. “We get brand-new clothing with tags. We had a red blazer last winter with a $199 price tag on
it. It was beautifully made.” Proceeds from the store, which opened in 2009, are given to the church and local charities. For 2020, Bush noted that the shop’s rent has been generously paid by a donor. “We give money to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard and the Parkesburg POINT Youth Center. We give back to our church and PCCO, which is Parkesburg Churches Community Outreach,” she explained. “When there is a fire or a family in need that needs clothing, PCCO gives them a voucher and they come over and they are given five outfits each - shoes, clothing and brandnew underwear. When we are low on underwear, I put a call out to local churches, and it comes in. With the pandemic, people were ordering underwear and having it sent. (Parkesburg) Walmart also gives us donations of sheets and underwear.”
Volunteers are always needed to help sort and price items and to run the cash register. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and they do not have to be members of the church. “We are open for two hours at a time,” Bush said, noting that the time frame makes it ideal for volunteers. “We have volunteers in their 70s and a few in their 80s who are retired ladies and have a lot of fun doing this and have met a lot of friends through the years.” The shop is also in need of donations. Donations of in-season items are accepted during the shop’s operating hours or by appointment. Items that are not offered for sale in the store are donated to the Goodwill Store in Coatesville. For more information about the thrift store, readers may call 610568-5835 or visit www.facebook .com/righteousclothingthriftstore.

Flu Shots Available At Giant, Martin’s The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets instore pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giant foodstores.com/flushot or www.martinsfoods.com/flushot. In addition to the drive-up flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over six months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

crisis to assert American commitment to the region and act as a primary de-escalatory catalyst. During its deployment, Truman hosted 80 embarked guests, including political and military leaders from eight ally and partner nations. Bucklin is an enlisted air warfare specialist and an enlisted surface warfare specialist; in recognition of these distinctions, he was chosen as an Air Department Warrior of the Week. For their service during the pandemic, he and his shipmates received the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal. Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Bucklin, who said his grandfather and all his grandfather’s brothers served in the Navy.

Airman Matthew J. Bucklin, a 2016 Octorara Area High School graduate and Christiana native, returned home on June 16, marking the end of a sevenmonth deployment aboard USS Harry S. Truman. Since departing its home port of Norfolk, Va., in November 2019, the aircraft carrier sailed in the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Bucklin worked on the flight deck aboard the carrier assisting in the launch and recovery of jets and helicopters. Following a scheduled return from deployment in March, after operating in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operations, Truman remained underway in the Western Atlantic as a certified and ready carrier force prepared for tasking. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, the crew of the Truman sought to minimize the potential spread of the virus aboard the ships. While deployed, Truman supported dual-carrier operations, air defense exercises, anti-submarine warfare exercises and interoperability with joint services and with allies and partners. The ship also completed multiple strait and choke point transits under three combatant commanders - U.S. Northern Command, U.S. European Command, and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). While conducting stability operations in the CENTCOM area of responsibility, Truman and the other vessels in the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group were called upon during an international

McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a partdiscount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself,” McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it.” During the last few months, McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets,” she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a
blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy.” There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs. Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger,” she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with.”
Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog),” she explained. “The email list (of your subscribers) is yours.” Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations - are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a case-by-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own
website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away,” McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.”
Tips Offered For Freezing Vegetables Especially in recent months, many people have been shopping in bulk or, at the least, meal planning and buying necessities for a few weeks at a time. Large packages of meat and poultry can be broken down and frozen easily, but what about the fresh produce that many people rely on for important nutrients? Fresh vegetables only last so long, so people need to learn how to safely freeze fresh vegetables to avoid throwing them out. To freeze vegetables properly so they retain their flavor and texture, it is important to freeze them within a few hours of picking them from a garden or taking them home. Certain vegetables can be frozen in their raw state. The texture might change slightly upon thaw-
ing, but they will remain flavorful. Other vegetables may require blanching before freezing. Blanching requires scalding vegetables in boiling water or steam for a brief time. Blanching helps stop the enzymes that cause vegetables to decay, a process that can occur even in frozen storage. Items that do well with blanching include spinach, kale, winter squash, and broccoli, according to HGTV.com. Another way to freeze produce is to remove the air that can compromise the food. This can be done by filling containers or bags and pushing out the extra air. Vacuum sealers can work to remove the air and help preserve items in the freezer longer. Otherwise, people can use a tray pack method to freeze items. Chilled
and drained blanched vegetables should be placed in shallow trays or pans. They should be frozen until the vegetables are firm and then freezer bags or containers should be filled quickly says the National Center for Home Food Preservation. Containers should be dated and labeled, so items can be used in the order in which they were packed. Most vegetables maintain high quality for eight to 12 months at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, according to the University of Georgia. Freezing fresh vegetables is an option when stocking up on essentials. Flavor and texture can be retained, and items will not need to be discarded before they can be eaten.
