About 40 people - both black and Quaker - were arrested and held for trial on the charge of treason. A team of lawyers, led by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens of Lancaster, came to their defense and won.

On hand during the event will be members of the Thaddeus Stevens Society, as well as students from the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster who are helping to restore the Brinton House.

The rich history of Christiana will be celebrated on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10 and 11, as the Christiana Historical Society presents Christiana Heritage Days. Events that will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 10 will include wagon tours of Christiana, an appearance by Civil War re-enactors, food trucks and children’s activities. The celebration will continue on Sept. 11 with a worship service followed by a picnic lunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be a family-oriented, walkable scavenger hunt, as well as book signings by authors Harry Kendall and Joel Moore. Colón, who is a descendant of one of the participants in the Resistance, will be at the Underground Railroad Museum, 11 Green St. Once known as Zercher’s Hotel, the building was used to hold those who were arrested during the Resistance while they awaited transport to Philadelphia for trial.

According to Darlene Colón, society president, the annual event is designed to highlight the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851, when a slave owner came from Maryland to retrieve what he deemed to be his property. The black community took a stand and refused his demands. With the black residents receiving help from their Quaker neighbors, a confrontation ensued which ended with the death of the slave owner.

Food vendors will include an Amish food truck, which will offer breakfast and lunch; SoulCountry Vegan; Randy Yoder preparing chicken; and Brinson’s Barbeque. T oday, street signs are found on nearly every street corner in the United States, but at one time, only main crossroads had a post with directional arrows pointing to towns that could be reached by heading “that way.” In the 17th century, English signposts had arms pointing in f our directions, with the name of the town to be reached in that direction painted on each. They were called “fingerboards.” In 19th-century America, the signs on the post were often closed hands with the index finger extended, pointing to the village that could be reached by heading down that road. Hence the name “Handboards.” They were usually painted white with black lettering, sometimes with the addition of mileage. By the 20th century, signs had devolved into just a narrow piece of wood with one end cut into a “V.” Often there would be four or more signs on a post like the well-known signpost on the television series “M*A*S*H.” Like other municipalities in Lancaster County, Salisbury Township had its share of signposts. But perhaps the most well-known actually gave its name to the site where it stood. The “Handboards” sign was located at the corner of Springville Road (Route 897) and Ranck and Meetinghouse roads, near the East Earl Township line. In the 1800s and early 1900s, the directional signpost led travelers to Meadville, Narvon, New Holland, Cambridge and Gap. People from the area would meet at that corner to journey together to whichever town they planned on visiting. In days before telephones were common, people might have sent a postcard to announce intentions to meet “at the Handboards.” In the mid-20th century, the Handboards was a designated bus stop for children of that area. Jack Hillard is a historian whose passion is researching and recording distinctive historical sites of local interest. He has researched several sites along Ranck Road and has fashioned easily read memorial signs placed at those sites. Hillard wanted to erect a new version of that “Handboards” sign where the original had Unfortunately,stood.there was little memory of what the signs on the post looked like. The Historical Society of Salisbury Township joined Hillard in gathering information for his plan to reconstruct the “Handboards” sign. Some people vaguely recalled that they were thin white boards with the “V” shape at one end and the name of the village painted in black. W hile the society reached out to the community in an attempt to tell the whole story, Hillard designed and constructed the sign that can be seen today, using what little information could be found. The reconstructed sign now proudly stands at almost the original site directing travelers on their journey. The once-famous corner is now memorialized.

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club was formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a local attraction.TheGap Town Clock Lions Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at a member’s home. Both students are residents of DanielParkesburg.wasa member of the golf and tennis teams in his senior year and was captain of the junior varsity basketball team in his freshman and sophomore years. He was also a member of the ski and snowboard club. Daniel was named to the homecoming court and was voted Most School Spirit. He helped with youth basketball at the YMCA. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics at the Fox School of Business at Temple University, with the goal of becoming a financier and entrepreneur.Briannaplayed basketball in her freshman and sophomore years of high school. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited. The event will include a Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society educational and historical display, as well as a vintage Ford truck in the Pennsylvania Railroad livery from Ken Briers. At 11 a.m., Marino J. “Joe” Acri III will present on the Pennsylvania Railroad G5’s locomotive and backup service with commuter trains. Retired CSX engineer Dominic “DJ” Arlia will speak at 1 p.m. about his experiences working for the railroad, his model railroading hobby, being a licensed drone pilot, and his YouTube videos. In addition, Frank Crowe will create and exhibit works at the museum on Sept. 10 and Sunday, Sept. 11. Crowe is one of four artists-in-residence who will be hosted at the museum in the coming months in cooperation with the American Society of Railway Artists. The other artists are Gil Bennett, Ken Muramoto, and Nadine Charlsen. Crowe began watching trains at an early age, took up drawing and painting them and, as a result, earned a scholarship to the University of Georgia. Upon graduation, Crowe worked briefly for several railroads, and today he is a senior designer for a large carpet manufacturer. His work allows him to travel, shoot railroad photography, and paint. He has photographed trains in the 48 contiguous United States and in all but one CanadianBennettprovince.willvisit the museum on Saturday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 23. He has had a passion for trains since age 2. Classically trained, he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in architecture and fine arts.
